The President’s Diary Hello All

Another big week for RCoPB with the BIG fun-d raiser at Montes last Saturday night 25th. A good group attended and organizer Brad Kenny advises approximately 150,000 baht has been raised for the Moken projects on Kho Lao I think all were in good “spirits” until the police appeared and closed down all alcohol for the night, due to the advance elections on Sunday. Although approval had been given for our event, having organized the date months ago, the close down notoce was less than twenty four hours. Everyone still had a good night with plenty of raffle prizes and silent auction items An excellent speaker, Patrick Vickers at the meeting on Tuesday night, shows what can happen if one dreams and it becomes a reality. Although still maybe a year to go Patrick will crew the IXDOS and venture into isolated areas to provide medical services. On Friday night at John Underwood’s factory P.P.O.B. Wetzell arranged a fund raiser with great music and food . All proceeds tp go to Bang Jo school and Polioplus Next Wednesday is POLIOPLUS day for RCoPB to go to the gypsy village in Koh Siray commencing at 8.30am Please being some items for the children – candy, pencils etc Don’t forget the BLOOD DRIVE on 27th February – as they say – YOUR BLOOD IS WORTH BOTTLING There are nine members and two partners attending the District Conference in Surat Thai on 7-9th March - thank you - a good representation from RCoPB Next Tuesday night is Dinner Out at Le Winch – Boat Lagoon I look forward to the night in a very pleasant location at the Boat Lagoon YIR

The room was certainly buzzing with many visitors and members

Club business was discussed and it was reported that the fund raiser at Montes was a success with approximately 150,000 baht of charity funds raised on the evening. •

There will be a next fund raiser at Underwood Art Factory on the bypass road on 31 January and the 1,500 baht admission includes Music, Food and a welcome drink. Tickets are available from O.B., David, or at the door.

The next dinner out, is set for 4 February at Le Winch restaurant in Boat Lagoon. Please reply to PP Mark with your confirmation and dinner choices.

There will be Polio Vaccination days on 5 February and 5 March. The RCoPB will participate and will help vaccinate the Moken village on Koh Siree. This is the same village we helped with last year and is a great day of Rotary in action.

There will be a Blood Donation Drive by Rotary in honor of our anniversary at Central Festival on 27 February and all and invited to donate blood.

The Rotary District Conference is in Surat Thani this year and promises to be a good weekend of fun and fellowship. P. Denis has forwarded details and please reply with your attendance.

Johan introduced our guest speaker Patrick Vickers. Patrick had a dream in 1991 when he was working for the health service in Papa New Guinea. His dream was to offer health service to distant islands by having a sailing vessel equipped and staffed for healthcare. Patrick explained that UNICEF statistics show 20 children die each MINUTE from preventable diseases. His ship will help alleviate some of that tragedy by providing health services where none are now available. In 2003 he laid the keel of the schooner IXDOS in Phuket and has been steadily building her since then. IXDOS means fish in Greek. Patrick has undertaken the building of IXDOS as a service to those the ship will reach. He is in the final phases of construction and nearing completion. However, several key components remain and he is actively searching for the funding needed to finish the ship. The main remaining components are: • 2 masts • Stainless Steel rigging • Sails • Generator • Refrigerators for maintaining medicines and vaccines at controlled temperatures (The cold chain) The ship is currently at the British International School and the students are helping in the final work on completing her. The hope is to launch her within a year but this will depend on donations and funding. When complete she will have a crew of 12 of which several will be health care workers. The first mission will likely be 1-2 months and travel to the remote islands in Myanmar.
