Last Meeting Night Report – 28th May Meeting opened with usual gong and Anthem.

Visiting Rotarians: Jost Koerte RC of WiesbadenNassau, Germany – only mixed club of 4 clubs in Wiesbaden. One of their money making projects: they sold and assisted in the baking of the longest yeast cake, 35metres, in Wiesbaden. Visitors: Raymond Homma - a prospective new member - second visit

Able served as SAA as the two official SAA’s did not attend. Thanks Able.

P. Larry informed the members of the visit by four Rotarians from RC of Johor Bahru Sentral in Malaysia. They visited Phuket last week as their club was holding its District Conference in Phuket. They requested a chance to do a small project in conjunction with our club, and Brad arranged a visit to Life Home where they presented some articles much needed by LH.

P. Larry also reminded the few members attending of the upcoming COMSERVs in conjunction with the US Navy League and the US Navy from the USS Nimitz and the USS Princeton who are in port. PP Sam Fauma and the Thai Vocational Group still in Austria, sending lots of photos that arrive in the middle of the night, waking up our members! Don't sleep with your phone on the pillow. The group all are having a great time.

P. Larry Introduced John Underwood as an old friend of many years, and probably the inspiration of most of the art activities that take place on Phuket.

John gave us a brief summary of his early life on a sheep station in a most arid section of Australia, and his early experiences as a struggling artist, with a particular passion for sculpture. He showed photos of some of his works including five star hotels, a fabulous home in Dubai, boutique hotels, the twin towers in KL, and here in Phuket, the Indigo Pearl Resort, the J.W. Marriott Resort, Nicky’s Handlebar Hotel, and his newest, the Barefoot Bar on the Beach.

And, of course, known to almost every farang on the island, the Lost Legends venue at his own factory in Phuket. John noted that today, major hotels and resorts are cutting back on expenditures for architectural design and outfitting, so he is concentrating on what he has termed “cost effective design”, Nicky’s and Barefoot Bar being examples.

ASAA Able thanked John for his presentation, noting that she had worked for John and always found him to be an inspiration. Many people expressed appreciation of John's talk.

A little Humour Patrick walks into a bar in Dublin, Orders three pints of Guinness & sits in the corner of the room, Drinking a sip out of each pint in turn. When he had finished all three, He went back to the bar & ordered three more. The barman says, "You know a pint goes flat soon after I pull it ......... Your pint would taste better if you bought one at a time." Patrick replies, "Well now, I have two brodders, one is in America ; & de odder in Australia ; & here I am in Dublin . When we all left home, we promised dat we'd drink dis way to remember de days we all drank togedder." The barman admits that this is a nice custom & says no more. Patrick becomes a regular customer, & always drinks the same way ....... Ordering three pints & drinking a sip out of each in turn, until they are finished. One day, he comes in & orders just two pints. All the other regulars in the bar notice! & fall silent. When he goes back to the bar for the second round, The barman says, "I don't want to intrude on your grief but I wanted to offer my condolences on your great loss." Patrick looks confused for a moment, then the penny drops & he starts to laugh, "Oh no," he says, "Bejesus, everyone is fine!

Tis me, ........................ I've Quit Drinking!"

USS Nimitz and the USS Princeton invades Banjo migrant school What do you mean – the bus is LOST ? Putting up the chain link fence was an ordeal but these guys never faltered.

Ice cream yummy.

Everyone enjoyed painting, it was in the shade

The trampoline still a big success.

Looks like a young miss is organizing who gets on the trampoline next --- oh what fun

The yard was spotless by the time this crew finished.

Clean up was hard work but that meant soon time to go and get into the air cooled vans…and sleep. A super Comserve, Banjo is a fine looking school now.

The Thai food was loved by everyone, Joy's Cafe in Patong did a great job with spicy curried chicken, scrambled eggs and lots of coke to drink. Grapes for dessert made it all super healthy.

Just a note to let you know how much your sailors, and work crews at the Banjo Learning Centre in Chern Talay enjoyed the food supplied by Joy from her Cafe in Patong.. She and her Burmese cook prepared over 40 lunches for each of the 2 days of Comserve and not one sailor chose the American food. They were in Thailand and they wanted Joy's food.

Two days – two groups

Thank you to the US Navy and the SS Nimitz and her crew. Thank you for sending so many people out to Banjo, a lot of work was done and well done too. If we'd had the third day of Comserve, the Nimitz crew would have all of the school speaking English by now. They were great. Thank you, Pat Michel
