The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise

The Rotary Club of Patong Beach Bulletin

and, in particular to encourage: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service High ethical standards in business and professionals; the recognition of worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and community life. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four Way Test Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIP? Will it be BENIFICIAL to all concerned?

Dates for your Diary

Last Meeting -22nd July, 2008 President Michael opened the meeting with a bang, literally as there was no gong present and he instead rapped on a drawing of the gong on the white board. The gong remains at the Holiday Inn after our installation night, seems it likes the pool over there and is enjoying a holiday. Visiting Rotarians : Jon Valdemar Andoese RC NW Denmark, Jack & Vicki Gibb RC Renmark South Australia. Norman & Helen Dawkins RC Laguna Phuket, Graham & Michelle Ashby RC of Workington Derwent U.K. ,

Visitors: George & Linda Mc Call, John Woodger, (Norman Dawkins) Thomas Callaghan (Michael Massey) & Ingo Muller SAA Pat covered the weekly program including updates from the committees. PP O.B. Informed of the planning for the Fund Raiser and that the event will now be held at The Holiday Inn Resort (maybe so we can track down the gong) and will be a more intimate evening of fun. P Michael advised that the District Governor's official visit is in two weeks and that he would be coordinating preparations with the Committee Chairpersons. The guest speaker for the evening was our own Khun Woody and, as always, it was an interesting and enjoyable evening. Included here is the outline direct from Woody as it is a much better review than my poor notes Q: What’s the best Internet? Internet speeds have changed wildly –to the better

Joke for this week :

Watch the speeds other folks are logging

On my first day working at the gas station, I watched a senior co-worker measure the level of gasoline in the under ground tanks by lowering a giant measuring stick down into them. "What would happen if I threw a lit match into the hole?" I joked. "It would go out," he replied very matter-of-factly. "Really?" I asked, surprised to hear that. "Is there a lack of oxygen down there or some safety device that would extinguish it before the fumes ignited?" "No," my co-worker continued. "The force from the explosion would blow out the match."

Right now, TT&T and TOT offer good packages CAT’s HiNet service is fast, but comparatively overpriced TOT Silvercyber may be faster than Goldcyber Speeds vary widely, depending on location

The President is having a Birthday

Right now, my choice is TT&T MaxNet, Premiere

Last Meeting -22nd July, 2008 - KHUN WOODY Q. What’s the best wireless?

Last Meeting -22nd July, 2008 - KHUN WOODY Free Programs You Need

Many different technologies available

Firefox 3, free, www.getfirefox.com

GPRS, old mobile phone system, is the same as EDGE

Much faster and more secure than Internet Explorer

CAT offers two different systems: 1X and EV-DO

Runs side-by-side with Internet Explorer, no problem

Here’s how they stack up:

PDF handlers –I avoid Adobe Reader

GPRS about 40 –50 Kbps

For opening PDF files, use Foxit, www.foxit.com

EDGE about 100 –120 Kbps

For creating PDFs, use sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator

1X from CAT about 120 –140 Kbps

Picture file “squisher”

EV-DO “Air Card” from CAT about 400 –600 Kbps

Makes big picture files much, much smaller

You can only get EV-DO from CAT, the CCU-650

VSO Image Resizer, www.vso-software.fr

Works in most of Thailand, but NOT Bangkok

For remembering passwords, www.roboform.com

Q. How do you get wireless? Most modern mobile phones support GPRS Check with AIS or DTAC –B 999/mo unlimited EDGE requires a special card, about B 8,000 or more The EDGE card needs a SIM card from AIS or DTAC EDGE service is the same as GPRS, i.e., B 999/mo CAT has “1X” phones that plug into your computer About B 3,000 for phone, B 800/mo for service You can only get EV-DO from CAT Requires Comtech CCU-660, around B 10,990 Service is just B 800/mo Windows Protection You don’t need or want Norton, McAfee, etc.

Free Disk Programs Synchronize files across computers, both XP and Vista Get the latest version of all your files stored in one place Downside: requires the .NET Framework in XP Microsoft SyncToy, free, tinyurl.com/7pdrq Delete duplicated files Compares byte-by-byte for duplicates across folders NoClone Free, www.noclone.net Delete unneeded files, free up disk space Ccleaner, www.ccleaner.com

The words of thanks were delivered by PP Sam and the meeting was closed with another bang on the gong picture.

Big and bloated, expensive, constantly in yer face You need an antivirus program I use AVG Free (free.avg.com), but there are problems Also highly recommended: AVAST and NOD32 Install a free antispyware program I use Windows Defender, free, from Microsoft Make sure your firewalls are running Most routers have hardware firewalls Windows XP SP2, Vista both have good (partial) firewalls

Thank you PP/AG David)
