Hello everyone! We are indeed on our committed preparations for our 75th Anniversary Celebration. The presentations made by the different Committees only show that we are taking this celebration to new heights! Of course, this happens only once in the Rotary Club of Baguio lifetime! And ours too! Such an opportunity we must oblige ourselves to the utmost! As the Diamond Jubilee Trilogy earnestly leads us, we must do our part to make “THE YEAR AND DAY” truly deserved. 29 September – The Cleaning of the Adopted City Overpass at the HarrisonAbanao-Magsaysay, Baguio City. It was so inspiring to see that many citizens of the City wanted a share in the cleaning of the overpass! It was just that -- there has to be a Mover-- and that we did! Our sponsors were generous of their service and kind assistance. Our partners in service, the City of Baguio, RCC, Interactors, Rotaractors, Rotary Anns, Rotakids and our members, of course, voluntarily and happily scrubbed, soaped, swept and watered roof, floors, walls and stairs! Kudos to Dir./PP Bert, Rtn. Glen and Dir. Mark for coordinating this work! Rtn. Karl and Rtn. Peter came to the field with their own barangay troops. Thank you too gentlemen! As we made the final touches, many asked only one question, “When do we do this again?” 30 September – The members of the RCC of Lucnab, Barangay grouped together and started working on their water project. When completed, water supply will reach the homes of community members residing at the lower portion of the barangay comprising of 100 families, more or less. Timely especially comforting for the children during this cold ‘bbbberrrr’ months who should keep warm inside their homes instead of making “sakdo-sakdo” (fetching water) in the early mornings! Continuous invitations are made by the District for the 2012 Selangor Institute scheduled for 16-18 November 2012 and to be held in Sunway, Lagoon Hotel, Malaysia. Deadline for registration is 15 October 2012. There is no onsite registration and there will be no refunds after 15 October 2012. On the other hand, the 104th Rotary International Convention in Lisbon, Portugal is scheduled for 23-26 June 2012. RI President Sakuji Tanaka invites every Rotarian to join and experience this activity dubbed as “A Harbor for Peace in Lisbon.” Hope that many from our Club would be endeared to attend this Convention. Please register to the Secretariat for initial preparations. Our young people are preparing to go RYLA on 19-21 October, 2012 at Grande Island, Subic. It will be another exciting world we offer to our young partners . Yes, it is the role of Rotary to train new leaders, for the country and for Rotary too!

In Retrospect The Regular Meeting That Was 29 September 2012 Aud. Bennie Laranang One size fits all! Just like this ala-models of the RCB-DJC Shirts, RCB will wear this shirts with pride!

Rtn. Gary Lo Ang was early enough to be at the Wolfson Room instead of the Powerhouse to greet everyone that day. The room was filled up though at first we were just very few but eventually many came a little bit late. At least its better late than never to be there at all. The Meeting was called to order exactly at 12:30 pm by Pres. Libby Fernandez and right after, DGE Linda Winter, that day’s Program Coordinator, called upon RAPP Maya Peralta who rendered a heart warming Invocation. It was followed by the usual routine of singing the Pambansang Awit and the Rotary Hymn as well with feelings.

Sounds like a good plan! These ladies are all getting excited for the big event. With all the planning, one daydreams of the Diamond Jubillee Celebrations

PE Uwe Koeller presented how the internet works during the Entertainment time. The task of Introducing the Visiting Rotarian and Guests was delegated to IPP Flo Bayquen and she mentioned that she will not have a hard time doing that because we did not have guests and a guest speaker that day. However, she gladly introduced each Rotary Anns who were present. The Finest Moments was done by Dir. Atom Mendalla who fined all the Rotarians who were present in the last day of Feeding Program on 21 September at the Lucnab Elementary School as well as those who were at the RCC Seminar at the BSU Gymn last 22 September.

The ladies are in the house! That is why VP Chris Faelnar is all smile being with her perfect tandem RAPP Yolly.

There were lots of chocolates and goodies given at the Raffle Draw done by RAPP Cynth Meadows, kidding us that she is free for almost two months since Rtn. Herb is in the USA at the moment. During the Members’ Time, Rtn. Gary Lo Ang shown to the group the sample shirts for the Diamond Jubillee Celebration. Some Rotarians and Anns modeled it in front. The t-shirts varies in 4 types - 2 white and 2 blacks ones, with and without collars, all bearing the 75th Anniversary RBC logo. We all placed our orders after. DGSC Gerard distributed also the Certificates of Appreciation/Participation to those who were at the RCC Seminar at BSU Gym.

Father and son moments, with serious faces - PE Uwe Koeller probably showing the secrets of E-commerce to RK Andy.

During the President’s Time, Pres. Libby mention the Clean up drive to be done that later that day on foot continued on page 8

Service Projects About Intrepid and Industrious Rotarians, red fire engine trucks and pedestrian Overpasses PP Chris Peralta When my beloved Rotary Club of Baguio comes up with something new in the club, it most likely will catch my interest, attention and participation. Our Service to Community needs new and different projects to sustain the enthusiasm of our members, and this “Adopt an Overpass Project” is one of them, I feel. This “Adopt an Overpass Project” seemingly came quite as a surprise, only discreetly announced via a text message. Club Secretary Baby Kaur, dutifully sent a text a day before the holding of the event, encouraging all to join in on the cleaning of our adopted overpass at the Magsagsay Ave, Abanao Street, Harrison Road intersection. Then, the following day during our regular Rotary meeting, Rtn Glenn Flores again repeated the call for club participation from the podium, saying as a matter of fact, that we already had something like a hundred people signed up to help out in cleaning the said overpass. And so this is when I said “okay, count Maya and me in”, just because it was something that we have not really done before. Indeed the kid somewhere still in me RE-AWOKE, reminiscing and remembering the times during childhood when playing and wading in water and getting wet to getting fully soaked, was a whole lot of FUN. President Libby Fernandez was at her busiest, because she did her utmost best to go from one group of volunteers to another, encouraging them on and thanking them for pitching in, in this endeavor organized by the club. And by no means it was a small task because we were doing the whole length of the G-shaped overpass. But a big task always becomes lighter and much more manageable with everyone offering a helping hand, and towards this end, the likes of the Sunshine Volunteer Fire Brigade truck of the delRosarios were there, our own Baguio City Fire Protection brought in their big red fire engine truck, to supply all the needed water to wash away the grim and dirt of the overpass. Recognition also has to go to enthusiastic rotarian couple Mark and Gail Flores who brought in pressure pump sprayers and their own kasama, Rtn. Peter Wasing and Rtn. Karl Flores who brought over a complete cleaning retinue from their respective barangays, the triumvirate of Jun, Baby and Lani who gathered a half a dozen young people continued on page 8

The Rotary Club of Baguio Cluster 1-C District 3790

Teamwork at its finest. No task will be easier without the combine efforts of everyone.

Member of the Interact of BCHNS helped and proved their dedication in Community Service.

Not capital punishment. Families can enjoy service project as well. RK Gabby getting cleaning tips from her father PP Mike Pearson. Father and son VP Chris and RK Ico was present too.

Volunteer from barangays of Rtn. Karl Flores and Rtn. Peter Wasing truly made this task much much simpler. Kudos and thanks to all of you!

Service projects Feeding Program At Lindawan Elementary School, Barangay Lucnab

Less is More Sec. Baby Kaur

An Award was given to Lindawan School Principal for being an instrument in the success of the feeding program.

Life is a bit tough and times are hard nowadays especially for the underprivileged, less fortunate members of our society. RCB identified Barangay Lucnab as one of those communities as such and adopted it for the Club’s Community Service on a longer basis. For many years now our Club Members indefatigably continue to do various projects and programs like our most recent one, ‘The Feeding Program at Lindawan Elementary School, Barangay Lucnab.’ The concern of the Club mainly is for the undernourished children of the barangay to learn to adapt to a healthier lifestyle spending less for more and better nourishment; and secondly for parents to learn how to feed their children with nutritious yet affordably healthful food.

Rotaract of RCC Lucnab made sure the kids enjoyed their meals.

A deep thoughful prayer. The kids went beyond their gratitude for having a chance of getting nourished once more.

‘Lahat pogi!’ A successful service project indeed! Let’s have more Service Projects as succesful as this one.

Pres. Libby asked me to write something about the last day of the program. With all due respect Pres, I was pondering over what to write, I asked myself, “What is so significant about the last day?” Well, the last day wraps up everything we have covered I suppose, but being there the first day to the last is the experience itself and it is priceless.

Thanks to the Committee on Health and Hunger for this bright idea and for giving me the opportunity to exercise my duty not only as a member of the committee but for having been able to have fed my soul in such a simple and small way even though it was tedious. I can still vividly recall the first time I joined the feeding program last year and was deeply moved seeing PP Veeh’s profound dedication to the program. To be part of it is one thing but involving all the members of his family into the program (last year) is another story and it has inspired me to the core. Most of the time we do things because it is being called for, like a task to be completed and a duty to be performed but doing it by heart without anything in return spells the difference. Seeing little children fed and satisfied with the food we prepared is a wonderful sight but in their eyes, the presence of people who are concerned for their welfare make them feel better and important. This I guess enhances substance to our cause. It is priceless when you see small children smiling to their heart’s content receiving their bag of goodies. One day I was late and this little child asked me, “Why continued on page 8

After the acknowledgment of the Rotarians, the program proceeded with the renewal of sponsorship and partnership in service agreement between the Rotaract Club of Baguio and SLU-SOM Rotaract Club. The signing of contract was accomplished by Rotary Club of Baguio Pres. Libby Fernandez and SLU-SOM Rotaract President Joseph Laygo. The orientation proper proceeded as follows. Membership committee Director JP Marquez, gave a brief history of SLU-SOM Rotaract and a quick overview of the club’s population statistics. RCB on the Move

The Meeting that was continued from 4 bridge/overpass. This is in coordination of the City’s effort in maintaining the cleanliness drive. Rotarians were asked to bring cleaning materials and look forward to a difficult task. But knowing the Rotarian heart, they would perform it with much gusto. The meeting was extended by PP Libby since it was also the Club assembly that day headed by PP Raffy Chan. The different Chairpersons of the various Committees have presented the tentative schedule of activities and plans.

RCB Joins International Peace Day Celebration 21 September – Celebration of the International Peace Day at the Peace Flagpole, Post Office, Baguio City. This was hosted by the Rotary Club of Downtown Session. In attendance from our Club were Rtn. Mariver,Dir. Gigi, Rtn.

We were happy since we are looking forward to a real ‘Mega’ and ‘bonggacious’ celebration of the RCB. Me, myself as a new member is excited to be a part of such activity. However, I believe that each and every Rotarian should actively participate and cooperate so that these momentous event be really a real success worthy of emulation and become a benchmark for the other Rotary groups. Most of the Rotarians and Annes stayed until the meeting was over and finally we sang the Pilipinas Kong Mahal and the meeting was adjourned before 3:00 pm.

who turned out to be Interactors of Baguio City High School, Science section, classmates of Rtn Jun Bondoc’s kids. Baby and company also brought in all the brushes with handle, Zonrox disinfectant, powdered soap and scrubs, tabo, pails and pansit merienda with juice for everyone. We were also given a huge box of Burger MacDo with the violet colored printed wrappers coming from MacDonald’s Hotel Veniz. Another big group were the Rotaractors and Barangay Lucnab officers who came in with Marticio Paguli in one long jeepney. Rtn Jun Cardona, Fery Malit and her painting contractor brother Dick Malit, EIC Marcel Badua and Rtn. Gary Lo Ang were present, Rtn Glenn Flores came complete with scaffolding, heavy duty generators to run the spotlights, and his very own working crew providing the muscle and manpower needs. PE Uwe, Dir./PP Bert Talco, PP Mike Pearson along with daughter Gabby Pearson, VP Chris Faelnar with son Ico Faelnar in toe, Maya and yours truly were all busy (is this the truth????) doing their share of the cleaning, or maybe to put it more correctly, doing their share of the playing!!! Well, to end this all, I guess if there was no fun in it, then we wouldn’t even be there at all. A bientot!

Anyway, the last day of the program was just like one of those 21 days, but what made this day special for the children is that we gave them a special treat of nonveggie diet, distributed bag of goodies to each child, and they also drew lots on who would bring home the remaining uncooked rice. Thank you to PP Mike, RAPP Mina and RK Gabby for the cake and also to those who helped sponsor the budget for the feeding program namely Dir. Atom, VP Chris, Dir. Gigi and Dir. Mark. Finally, by way of a report to our club, only 3 parents were constantly present with us the whole duration of the 21-day period though some would come to help cook, wash the dishes and other chores needed at that time. Salute to the parents for allowing us to be part of their children’s well-being even for such a short time. Most parents attended the last day. Out of 48 children only 3 did not gain weight. The parents were given the recipes for follow through with their children’s nutritional diet. Kudos to all! It was indeed a success! Again, Congratulations!
