We had a long vacation, 27 August and 01 September 2012, being holidays. Our scheduled projects and activities, however, were pursued with fervor. The WIG NIGHT, a double affair for the celebration of quarterly birthdays for our members and the potential members’ orientation last Saturday, 25 August 2012 was a success. The members who attended in multi-colored shiny wigs enjoyed the night dancing, singing and eating great food. We had two guests who took time to listen to the Rotary presentation. We hope to see them in our meetings soon. Rtn. Mariver and myself invited two ladies, Yasmin Tadeo and Dianne Diego who seemed comfortable and in with the crowd. I hope we could invite more guests in our subsequent fellowships. Congratulations to the organizers, headed by VP Chris Faelnar and Dir. Atom Mendalla. Of course, we appreciate the work done by the Rotary Anns who always bring color and laughter to our activities. On the other hand, on 29 August 2012, the Committee for the RCC hosting, chaired by PP Gérard Audineau, took time to finalize plans for the affair. PP Ben graciously offered his office for the meeting. And more. We are in fact partnering with the Benguet State University. The venue, the speakers, support staff, facilities, technicians and 100 bags of mushrooms are all from the generosity of BSU. We commend PP Ben for his great effort and support for the success of the RCC Livelihood Seminar for 22 September 2012. Thanks so much PP Ben! It was a brief yet very fruitful meeting- the meeting of the Council of Past Presidents! It was a momentous occasion listening to words from tempered, wise and seasoned ladies and gentlemen who are obviously moved by one passion, love for Rotary, that is. We hope to have more sessions like this… it really is enriching and humbling at the same time. Our Past Presidents are A Plus for our Club! Our Feeding Program is ongoing. We are glad that our Rotary Anns have been joining the worthy activity. Yes, everyone is welcome to have a peep and chat with the children under our care. After all, they love to see new caring faces everyday! Our Club celebrates its 75th Year! Lucky we are for having PP Raffy who chairs the affair. He has committed most of his precious time, mind and heart to make this big activity “THE ANNIVERSARY”! Today he presents the concept. Let us pay attention. After all, he made us all part of it! And we should do our part!

TRF: Committee Updates What is EREY? Dir. David Rees Director for the Rotary Foundation September 2012

“Every Rotarian Every Year” Last year, for the first time ever, our club met its 1st Annual Goal that every one of us contributed to the Rotary Foundation. Our goal for this year is to AGAIN become an “EREY” club where each member makes a contribution which, on average, is equivalent to US$100 per member. Why should we make contributions to The Rotary Foundation? Rotary’s mission is to further World Understanding, Goodwill and Peace Its focus is on: • Peace and Conflict Prevention • Water and Sanitation • Disease prevention and Treatment • Maternal & Child Health Care • Basic Education and Literacy • Economic and Community Development Rotary Funds its Programs through the Annual Fund – SHARE System. Available Funds that we have access to today are the result of our contributions 3 years ago. 50% through DDF (District Designated Funds) which go to our District to be spent on educational and humanitarian activities chosen by us; even grants that may be used for projects in our local community and: 50% through the World Fund to fund other Foundation programmes in which we can participate and is the source of matching funds we receive from our Foundation to implement our international projects. The Philippines is in need of assistance and is a direct beneficiary of funds from the Foundation – considerably in excess of the amounts donated by local clubs. This by itself should be good enough reason for you to make donations to the Foundation. Our Club’s Rotary Foundation Committee will be asking each of you individually to commit to a contribution this Rotary Year. PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY! Do Good in the World!

In Retrospect The Meeting That Was 25 August 2012 Dir. Gigi Maranan Photo: Rtn. Lani Fabi Captions: Pres.Libby & Rtn. Lani “This ‘End Polio” can, once filled and heavy, can roll great distance to the needing community!”

“Its only words - but this is what I have to say, ‘Bring a guest tonight at the Wig Party!”

“Another year Rtn. Glen but you need not worry - the years are kind to you..and to Pres. Libby and brod SAA Jun!”

“So we would be seeing much next Rotary Year huh..Mr. District Officer!”

The day started out as a gloomy, cold day with the rains threatening to fall at any time. But this did not deter everyone from attending the meeting; after all, it was Ladies’ Day. Rotary Ann Asst. Treas. Sally Koeller zealously sold raffle tickets to everyone who entered the door. In a short while, PP Veeh Balajo, program coordinator of the day, informed Pres. Libby Fernandez that all was ready for the meeting. The meeting was called to order promptly at 12.30pm. While everyone settled down, finished their business and ordered their lunch, VP Chris Faelnar entertained us with his rendition of 3 songs which he wanted to dedicated to his loving wife, who, unfortunately was not yet around. Nevertheless, VP Chris sang “Words” (BeeGees), “Lady” (Kenny Rogers) and “Just the Way You Are” (Various Artists) with so much emotion that you know he was imagining RAPP Yolly was listening. The introduction of visiting Rotarians and guests was properly done by Rtn. Cecile Apostol starting with the personalities at the head table and ending with our special guests RA Sally Koeller, RAPP Maya Peralta, RA Mitch Marania, RAPP Celly Ladilad and RAPP Yolly Faelnar who arrived just in time to be introduced. PP Gérard Audineau did the finest moments, showing pictures of each of the members of the club, announcing their activities in the club and fining us a hundred pesos each. Then it was raffle time. Although the raffle was handled by the Rotary Anns, it was PP Mike who took over as raffle master in lieu of RA President Mina Pearson who was unavailable. During members’ time, Rtn. Jun Cardona thanked all those who joined in the tree planting last Aug. 19 at Busol. PP Bert Talco announced the cleaning of the overpass at the Abanao/Harrison intersection on Sept. 15. VP Chris Faelnar reiterated the invitation to the wig

fellowship to be held that evening at Villa La Maja. IPP Flo Bayquen congratulated PP Ben Ladilad as President of the Benguet State University which garnered a 100% passing rate at the recently held Nursing Board Exams with 1 student landing in the top 10. PP Mike Pearson announced that the new End Polio Now cans now have Korean translations. And Dir. Mark Flores explained the plight of the club scholars in that although the lodgings of the UP scholars were well taken care of by RCB, they were in dire need of financial support for their food. At President’s time, Pres. Libby thanked each every Rotarian who participated in all the club activities and projects held during the week. She also announced the up and coming activities as written in her corner of the Canao. A beautiful birthday plaque was also given to birthday celebrant Rtn. Glen Flores who treated everyone to the traditional ice cream. SAA Jun Bondoc introduced his friend of 32 years, guest of honor and classification speaker Sec. Baby Kaur. With a classification of entrepreneurship, Sec. Baby chose to narrate the course of her life in order to explain what her business is all about and how she ended up with her retail and money lending. Everyone present was glued to their seats as Sec. Baby’s life colorfully unfolded. PP Mia, who gave the response, correctly said it: looks are misleading. Sec. Baby looks so strong on the outside but she could also tremble in fear of speaking before the members. Sec. Baby looked like a domesticated mother but, after her talk, she is now pictured as a first class business woman. The meeting was adjourned at 2:45pm after the singing of the Pilipinas Kong Mahal.

“There is this kind of magic when I attend this Club..I wonder why I feel just great!”

The Rotary Club of Baguio Cluster 1-C District 3790

Atom - “Oh well, let us just smile now....we will have a different look at the wig night!”

Cora - “He he we are thinking the same...would you recognize us tonight?!!”

Baby - “Of course there are thousands of handsome Filipino men...but...i would rather talk about the business that I have!”

“Finally, a token presented by Pres. Libby for Sec. Baby for the pleasant, informative and revealing talk! Discoveries.. discoveries!

RCB on the Move VISIT TO BUKIT BINTANG On 30 August2012, a five delegation from Rotary Club of Baguio, namely, Pres. Libby, PP Gérard, Dir./ PP Bert, Rtn. Naas and Rotakid Ryan, along with members of the Rotary Club of Baguio North and the Rotary Club of Dagupan, took a week-end off and attended the Installation Ceremony of the Rotary Club of Bukit Bintang in Malaysia, our sister club. The five (5) day affair was an opportunity for everyone to fellowship and meet other Rotary Clubs. Other invited clubs were the Rotary Club of Paranaque, Makati Southwest, Tongkat, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The members of the Rotary Club of Bukit Bintang were truly warm, generous and hospitable making sure that all the local and foreign guests were attended to. They were systematic and efficient in welcoming their numerous guests. They made sure that tours, meals, shopping and official business were smoothly dealt with. For those in attendance, they had quite an experience of Rotary in action…in the other parts of the world!

RI President’s Message September 2012:

Fellow Rotarians Sakuji Tanaka President, Rotary International

Many of you know that we now have five Avenues of Service in Rotary. The fifth, and newest, is New Generations Service. There are many ways to serve through this avenue, and you will read about some of them in this month’s issue.

TRF CHAIR’s Message September 2012

Highlight our Foundation’s good work Wilfrid J. Wilkinson Foundation Trustee Chair In July, I outlined the goals that your Rotary Foundation has set for 2012-13. In August, I emphasized that while it is essential to have goals, we can’t achieve them without a plan.

All of the work we do to educate children, to improve maternal health, to help families live healthier lives – all of this is service to New Generations. We also serve New Generations by working to eradicate polio, helping to ensure that future generations of children will be born into a polio-free world.

Many clubs and districts are off to a flying start and have both goals and a plan, and I offer them my sincere congratulations. However, nearly 50 years of experience in Rotary suggests to me that a much greater number are only starting to plan now. I would like to offer some ideas.

Our youth and young adult programs, such as Rotaract, Interact, Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, and Rotary Youth Exchange, are a very important part of this Avenue of Service. We must remember that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. By helping to develop young leaders and bringing younger members into our clubs, we strengthen communities – and Rotary’s future.

Every club should have a meeting that highlights the good work that our Foundation is doing. Perhaps it is a report on a recent Matching Grant project, Group Study Exchange, or vocational training team, or a talk by a former Rotary Peace Fellow or Ambassadorial Scholar. Perhaps Rotarians in your club or district have participated in a National Immunization Day and have seen firsthand the work to End Polio Now.

For most of my life, I have been a salesman. I learned long ago that being a good salesman is not enough. You must also have a good product. If you are a good salesman, you will make the first sale. But if you do not have a good product, you will make only the first sale. You will not make the second.

After you have made the case for our Foundation’s work all over the world, it is essential that you ask for both physical and financial support. How about discussing local Foundation projects? Inviting every member to contribute? Inviting non-members to contribute? Presenting the opportunity to become Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and Bequest Society members? Perhaps your meeting on the Foundation will be so effective, it will inspire an individual to become a member of the Arch C. Klumph Society.

It is not enough to bring new members into Rotary. We want them to stay. We want the new, young members to become longtime members. We want them to be Rotary leaders in 10, 20, or 30 years. How do we do this? We have to look at our product. We have to look at Rotary not with our own eyes, but with new eyes. When we invite a new member to join and that person’s answer is no, we should ask why. This is not to pressure someone into joining. It is to find out more information. What are the obstacles to membership? Is it an inconvenient meeting time? Is it too much of a time commitment? Is it something else that we have not thought of? We need to ask questions, and we need to open ourselves to the answers. We cannot say, “No, we will not do this,” just because we have never done it before. Why not have child care at a meeting? Why not involve families in projects? Why not make attendance

The Rotary Club of Baguio Cluster 1-C District 3790

My request is that every Rotarian do something, and more important, encourage others to do something. The world needs Rotary, but Rotary needs likeminded people to join us as we continue Doing Good in the World.

requirements less strict, or meet less often? Our new Avenue of New Generations Service is an important step in ensuring many future generations of Rotary, and of Service Above Self.

RCB on the Move

THE WIG PARTY 25 August 2012 was the first fellowship in celebration of RCB members’ birthday celebrants. It was, likewise, a night to invite Rotary guests to have a look see of what Rotary is all about. RCB members, Rotary Anns and guests trooped to Villa La Maja to be a part of the Wig Party. Almost everyone came in their multi colored, curly, straight, long, short and what- have- you- hair! Did they look different at all? PP Mike gave a short presentation of Rotary to our two (2) guests, invited by Pres. Libby and Rtn. Mariver. Hoping, of course, that our guests, Atty. Yasmin Tadeo and Diana Diego, did have ideas of what Rotary is all about. The night went along as everyone danced the floor away, partaking of the pot luck prepared food, blowing and eating of the birthday cake and of more singing! A great night indeed!
