Men's Club

A

Being one of those men, John spoke to his new friends and neighbors, and in short order, the Men’s Club was born. The organizational meeting was held in February, 2012, with 26 attendees signing as charter members. Discussions centered on what the name should be and whether the group should be a Chartered Club or a Special Interest Group. Most were not sure of the difference, but with HOA guidance, the Men’s Club became one of the first Chartered Clubs in Sweetgrass. (You can see the Charter application and the 26 names under the Archive tab on the Men’s Club page of mysweetgrass.net.) And it was in that very first meeting that public service was discussed and soon became the foundation for the club’s activities – and success. Mysweetgrass.net also explains, “As an organization, it has a committee structure that utilizes the skills of its members for fun and productivity.” These committees focus on tasks that are key to the club’s success. Flexibility allows the committees to be changed and aligned to the changing objectives and needs of the club membership under the guidance of the Board of Directors. Fun just happens! The Activities Committee focuses on producing fund raising shows and events that are enjoyed by community residents while putting together interesting and enjoyable activities for our members. The Donations Committee vets small reputable and deserving charitable organizations to

s stated on the community website, mysweetgrass. net,“The Men’s Club is a recognized and respected Chartered Club open to all male residents in the Sweetgrass community.” It goes on to say,“As a venue, it is a place where men of all backgrounds and experiences come to enjoy meals and conversation, listen to interesting speakers, participate in various activities and enjoy each other’s company.” Several years ago, early in the development of Sweetgrass, John Miller recognized that retired, non-working men who were moving into the community in 2012 needed to be able to get out of the house, meet other men in similar situations, and congregate occasionally for old fashioned fellowship.

receive cash and other items that are funded through the Activities Committee. The work of these two committees presents opportunities for using the talents and skills of club members to help others and builds the comradery that John Miller envisioned eight years ago. Today, the Men’s Club is known both for quality entertainment productions and thoughtful support of our neighbors in the Richmond/Rosenberg area. The Pancake

Breakfast will be coming up in March, and the Men’s Club will sponsor several sessions of Bingo in 2020. Keep your eyes open for these events! As a resident, we wholeheartedly invite you to come to one of our monthly dinner meetings and then become a regular member of the Sweetgrass Men’s Club. Let’s keep up the good work!

O

n January 14th, the Women's Club of Sweetgrass kicked off the year by hosting a luncheon at the beautiful Junior League of Houston. Chairs Joy Holland, Mija Lane, Maryann Metcalf, Brenda Barton and Hilda Pena planned a wonderful experience for our members. Chartered Buses of women arrived to hear piano selections being performed by Ron Ellis, and enjoyed a Cash Bar while listening to music and socializing preceding lunch. Many also chose to purchase casseroles and other delights from the Junior League Pantry, with all profits benefiting local Houston charities. During the three course luncheon, Yvonne Sexton, President, discussed upcoming events, including repeating the popular summer barbeque that will benefit Jane Long Elementary, our chosen philanthropy for the year. We are hoping to raise enough funds to buy Spirit Shirts for each student, a coveted item that not all can afford. Beverly Porche has graciously agreed to Chair this effort once again. Kaye Lynn White then announced the next Signature Event to be held at Sugar Creek Country Club on Tuesday, April 21st, from 11am-1pm. The venue for this event will be a Luncheon and Fashion Show by Chico's, with a travel theme for Summer. Members of the Club will be our models. In the planning stages are one general membership meeting in June, a Happy Hour in the Fall, and a Holiday Party at The Lakehouse in December. Dates and times for events and ticket sales to be announced, but all participants must be members of the Women's Club of Sweetgrass. Ladies, we listened to your ideas and are off to a wonderful start for the new year!

COMPLIANCE CORNER

Springtime Landscaping: Hello Sweetgrass Homeowners, 2019 has come and gone and the 2020 spring season is right around the corner. This is a great time of year to remove debris in your landscape beds, cut back your plants to promote new growth, and shape your existing plants before the Texas sun returns for another long summer. Spring is also the time of year that many of you will want to make changes to your existing landscape and yards, which does require prior approval from the ARC (Architectural Review Committee). Below are a few helpful tips that you should know before making changes. • If you are adding seasonal color/flowers that do not exceed 36 inches in height, then you do not require the approval of the ARC. However, if you are adding a new landscape bed to put the flowers in, then you would need to submit an application. • Are you requesting to add stone edging, a fountain, bird feeder, or other feature to your yard in your landscape application? These items will require a sample photo so that the ARC members will know what it is they are approving. • Will you be in need of replacing grass due to your project? Remember that you must replace with Bermuda grass as St Augustine grass is on the prohibited list found at the back of the Landscape application.

• The changes being made must be denoted on a copy of your plat map which can be found in your closing documents from your home sale. If you can’t find a copy of your plat map we may have a copy on file for you at the Lakehouse. • Speaking of plat maps, before you submit look for your utility easement (U.E.) and aerial easement (A.E.) on your plat map. You don’t want to have your landscaper draw up a plan for your yard just to find out that you can not plant a tree in the utility easement, or that there is a height restriction in the aerial easement. • Not a fan of your front yard tree? Did you know that the new list of approved front yard replacement trees is out? You can now replace your front yard Live Oak with a Crape Myrtle, Texas Redbud, Lacy Oak, Little Gem Magnolia, Eagleston Holly, or Savannah Holly once you have ARC approval. These are just a few things to keep in mind before making changes to your landscape this spring. If you are unsure about something you want to add or need help filling out your application, please contact the Compliance Coordinator, Rick Breitigam, at the Lake House or at rbreitigam@ccmcnet.com and he will be happy to assist you!

Sweetgrass Clubs and Groups Month #11 and #12 and shared her tips for their construction. Then members had plenty of time to work on those, as well as any of their other projects. Quilters at all levels (from “I want to learn to quilt.” to “I’ve been quilting all of my life!”) are always welcome at our Sweetgrass Quilters’ meetings so please invite friends and new neighbors to come with you. Our tagline is “We don’t collect dues. We just have fun!”

Sweetgrass Social Canasta Club

Thanks to all the "Frog Frenzy" Canasta Club members who enjoyed our Leap Year Celebration. 100 Sweetgrass Canasta members leaped into a great afternoon of fun for the “Frog Frenzy Leap Year Celebration” on Feb 5, 2020. Eighty four players paid one dollar for the chance to win cash prizes . Many more received a frog and second coupon when they had 4 clean canastas at the end of each hand. They “leaped” their score by 2020 points at the end of any hand when they had earned a “Frog. A third coupon was distributed to players who had over 40,000 points at 3PM. The first quarter activities committee distributed eight cash prizes of $10 and ten candy containers to the lucky “Frog Frenzy” players.

AT THE BAR THE OTHER NIGHT

An elderly looking gentleman, (mid-nineties) very well dressed, hair well groomed, great looking suit, flower in his lapel, smelling slightly of a good after shave, presenting a well-looked-after image, walks into an upscale cocktail lounge. Seated at the bar is an elderly looking lady. The gentleman walks over, sits alongside her, orders a drink, takes a sip, turns to her and says, “So tell me, do I come here often?”
