Sweetgrass Book Club

T

he Del Webb Sweetgrass Book Club was the first club to be formed in our community. The first meeting was held in April of 2011 with fewer than 10 members. At this time, homes were under contract but no one had yet moved in so the meeting was held at the Sales Office in the corner of the main reception room. The club has been meeting monthly ever since. Membership in the book club is open to all Sweetgrass residents. There are no membership dues. The club currently meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 3:00 to 4:30 PM in the Creativity Room at the Lakehouse. We now average about two dozen participants at each meeting. The Book Club has been a Chartered Club since August 2017. Our meetings are informal and friendly. We usually start by having each member introduce themselves and say whether or not they liked the book and why. Then a volunteer discussion leader takes over. The leader usually gives some information about the book and the author, then asks questions that lead to a more in depth discussion of the book. We read a wide variety of books, both fiction and non-

fiction. Some members say they like participating in the book club because it exposes them to books they may not normally choose to read. Members also appreciate hearing the differing viewpoints expressed by other club members based upon their various backgrounds and experiences. In September of each year, we have our “book report” meeting. Each member gives a brief description of a book they have enjoyed and would recommend that the book club read. These books are put on a list which is supplemented by other titles suggested by club members. The list is then sent out to all members and voted on. Books receiving the most votes are put on our reading list for the following year. We also use the Fort Bend County Library Systems program for local book clubs. The library will loan multiple copies of books on their lending list to Book Clubs for distribution to their members. This year about half our reading list was from this program. Not all the selections on our reading list have been popular, but even when we have selected a book which very few people end up liking, it seems we always have a good discussion.

Neighborhood Fun

Whisper Springs The Ladies of Whisper Springs celebrated the new year with a group lunch at Alicia's Restaurant. Twenty ladies enjoyed renewing their friendships, abundant conversation, and margaritas! This group meets for monthly luncheons, and have been doing so for about two years so far. We thank Martha Castillo and her committee for arranging today's lunch meeting.

Bayou Buzz Clubs and Groups Women’s Club of Sweetgrass

On December 18, 2019, the Women's Club of Sweetgrass Board of Directors delivered almost 600 bags filled with new socks and candies to our neighboring Jane Long Elementary School. Principal, Risa Crosby, informed of us of their needs and the children were delighted with the gifts that were provided by the profits from our summer barbeque facilitated by Chair, Beverly Porche. Jane Long School is the oldest elementary school in Fort Bend County and will remain our charity of choice in 2020 when we hope to do even more to support this worthy cause of enriching children's lives.

Join us Tuesdays in the Activity Room at 5:00 pm (this is a new time). We are seeking an accompanist for rehearsals and/or performances, any level of support would be appreciated. If interested, please contact President Ginny Foley at 832-363-1743. Sweetgrass Quilters

The Sweetgrass Quilters meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at the Lakehouse from 12 noon until 4 pm. Since we convene at noon, members can feel free to bring their lunches and/or snacks with them. The business part of each meeting is during the first hour leaving the remaining time for members to work on quilting projects that sometimes are provided or that they bring with them. We began 2020 by completing Block-of-the-Month #10 and going on the field trip to the Texas Quilt Museum that was postponed from last fall due to inclement weather. At our next meetings we plan to complete Blocks-of-the-Month #11 and #12 and put the finishing touches on quilts made from the blocks. Quilters at all levels (from “I want to learn to quilt.” to “I’ve been quilting all of my life!”) are always welcome at our Sweetgrass Quilters’ meetings so please invite friends and new neighbors to come with you. Our tagline is “We don’t collect dues. We just have fun!”
