Calvin Jess “Butch” Chief Stick, “Sweetgrass Man”, 72, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at his residence due to natural causes. Wake services begin at 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 09, 2017, and will continue until his funeral service, which will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 11, 2017, all at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Rocky Boy Cemetery. Butch was born on December 28, 1944, in Fort Belknap to Patrick and Amy (Chief Goes Out) Chief Stick. He was raised in Rocky Boy, attending schools there, and attended a couple of years of high school at Havre High School. He entered the US Army in 1965, serving as a helicopter mechanic in Vietnam until his honorable discharge in 1967. Upon his discharge, Butch moved to Fort Duchesne, UT, where he married Clarice Lopez. She passed away several years later, and Butch returned home to Rocky Boy in the early 1980s. He worked for many years as a carpenter in construction. In 2005, he married Donna Sue Meyers. Butch enjoyed going to the casino to socialize, reading, hand game, sweats, and performing mechanical work for people. He was a spiritual man who was proud of his cultural heritage, and was a Sundancer for many years. According to his nephew, he held a Master’s degree in storytelling. Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Amy Chief Stick, Sr.; his first wife Clarice Lopez; his siblings, Harvey, Clement Ray, Virgil, and Ambrosia Chief Stick; and several nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife Donna Sue Meyers of Billings; his son Jeremiah Taveapont of Fort Duchesne, UT; his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his siblings, Gloria Jean Chief Stick, Verles “Minnie” Chief Stick, and Kenneth Writing Bird, all of Rocky Boy, and Patrick John Chief Stick, Jr. of Pablo, MT, the Stiffarm Family; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and other extended family and friends.
