JUNE 2020

Bossier Superintendent: Stand Proud, Celebrate and Make Your Mark Dear Bossier Parish Class of 2020,

B

efore we put the final wrap on this school year that has been unlike any other and you start your life’s next big adventure, allow me a few moments to reflect and express how immensely proud I am of each of you. Your school experience over the last 13 years has helped shape and mold you into the person you are today and Bossier Schools is honored to have played a role in that metamorphosis. Just think how much you have grown and changed since kindergarten, not just physically but academically, emotionally and in maturity. As you have learned along the way, life often deals us curve balls and we do not always hit a homerun. The game changer is how you face obstacles and work to overcome them, especially when there is no play book to use as a guide. That is what defines you. A favorite quote of mine is “Do not ask for an easy life, but instead, ask for a strong will.” Just as we cannot direct the wind, we can adjust the sails and these past few months you have certainly done that. Bossier Schools has long been known for being a leader and innovator, and the Class of 2020 is a direct reflection of that. Not only did you show resilience despite having to learn from a distance the remainder of your senior year to get across the finish line, but you still exhibited positivity as milestones passed you by and displayed steeled determination not to let the circumstances at hand steal your joy. Our community took notice, too, by supporting the Class of 2020 in many special ways. Businesses and individuals bought billboards and displayed signage; they posted banners with graduates’ pictures in front of schools and complete strangers “adopted” our seniors and showered them with gifts, not to mention the special section in the Bossier Press Tribune you are reading now. Our community had your back and for that, I extend my sincere thanks. Graduates, my challenge to you is to stand proud of who you are and what you have to offer. Celebrate this final chapter and embrace the new one that is yet to come. When you step out into the world, make it your own. Each of you has a story to tell and the plot line is uniquely yours to write. Bossier Schools could not be more proud of you. You are what makes us Bossier Strong!!! Now, go make your mark.

To the Benton High School Class of 2020,

2020

he senior year is one that all seniors look forward to, and when the coronavirus dictated that schools must be closed, it brought your senior year to a screeching halt. Your “lasts” occurred without your knowledge. Last games, performances, classes, and traditions happened without fanfare because of the anticipated happenings of the things to come in the spring. I have cried for you because of the unceremonious way that your senior year ended. The loss you felt at the suspension of life on campus confirmed your love for this school and community. Yet today, I am happy. I am happy that you were able to have time with your family. I am happy that you may have newly found appreciation for the things that are often taken for granted. Mostly, I am happy that we are able to celebrate your accomplishments of the past thirteen years. In a year of so many “lasts,” you, the class of 2020, have seen so many “firsts.” You are the first senior class to attend classes in the new, beautiful Benton High School. You are the first senior class not to return to school from Spring Break. You are the first senior class to finish your courses via distance learning. You are the first AP seniors to take your exams exclusively online. And you are the first senior class to return your materials and pick up your caps and gowns in not-so-typical drive-by fashion.

The one thing that this virus cannot do is take away the friendships and bonds made over the past four years with your classmates, teachers, sponsors, coaches, and administrators. Take comfort in knowing that you have a treasure chest of memories that no virus can erase. Strive to be the very best in whatever path you choose to follow. I am confident that you, the Benton High School Class of 2020, will be successful, and I am proud that our future is now in your hands. You are battle tested and have faced this pandemic fearlessly and with grace. Go out and show the world how wonderful you truly are! Class of 2020, you have my heart. And remember what Doctor Seuss said, “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. Bossier High Graduates,

I

t has been such a privilege to watch you grow during your years at Bossier High School. The challenges you have faced, especially during these past few months, have been significant and unprecedented, yet you have all stepped up to the plate and met these challenges head on. I have never been more honored or proud to be your principal. When you came to Bossier High as freshmen, you may not have completely realized how lucky you were to be a part of this family, but now I think you probably do. Within these walls you have not just mastered your coursework, but you have bonded with one another and with your teachers and administrators. You have been a part of significant academic growth that has resulted in a School Performance Score we can all be so proud of. Our enrollment has grown, our scores have gone up, and as great as that is, it is nothing compared to the relationships we have forged together. We are as diverse a group as one could possibly imagine, and we are a family. As Bearkats, we find solutions to our problems and we support each other. If one of us is in need, we are all there to help, and you will find that to be true even after graduation. You will always be a Bearkat. Being principal at Bossier has been a mission for me, and it means so much to have been a part of this time of your life. With the outstanding work you have done during these past four years, you have helped ensure that Bossier High School will always be a pillar in our community, forever leading the way to excellence. We have a school and a family to be proud of, something that has been and always will be the history that is Bossier High School. This semester has taken many experiences from you that you may have been looking forward to, such as prom for example, but you have made so many other wonderful memories. You will never forget the football games, the basketball games, the band concerts. You’ll never forget your teachers and your friendships. As we link hands and sing the Alma Mater one more time at graduation, remember you are a “Bearkat for Life” and that we are proud of you and we love you. And ALWAYS remember ... JUNE 2020

To the Haughton High Class of 2020:

W

hat a memorable year you have had. It seems like yesterday when you first came to our campus for freshmen orientation. We told you that day that the next four years would fly by and they did. Little did we know at that time that your senior year would get cut short. Your time at HHS may have been shorter than others but you have made the most of it. It has been our pleasure to watch your growth over these last few years, maturing in to the confident, young leaders we hope to produce at Haughton High School. I encourage you to remember the great times you have had here. Remember the people who have made an impact on you as a student. Think of the special traditions we have at Haughton High and those things that make it unique. The memories and friendships you have made here will last a lifetime. I am sure over time some of these memories and friendships will fade as others will grow stronger. As with generations before, you will begin to embellish some of your memories as you recall them. You will remember your class, the Class of 2020, as the best that ever walked the halls, or sidewalks of HHS. By now you have figured out that things do not always turn out as we expect. In life you will always have to adapt and overcome an unexpected trial. Each trial you experience will be an opportunity for you to shine, a moment you may make your mark in history. Take each trial you experience and persevere and learn from the m. You will look back and realize you are a better person as a res ult. I wish you the best in all you do and remember, it’s a great day to be a Buc! Keep on winning, David Haynie Your Principal

Submitted by: Shannon Mathers 2019-20 Bossier Parish High School Student of the Year Dear Class of 2020,

I bet this isn’t what you expected when you left for Spring break! During quarantine, take some time to reflect. Although our final weeks of senior year were online, we have seven months of senior year memories. What was your favorite class this year? What was the most outrageous outfit you wore during homecoming week? What legacy

GRADUATION 2020

are you leaving behind? Let these answers remind you of the start of the year and motivate you in what comes next. Be a lifelong learner, go all out for team spirit, and keep in mind you always have less time than you think to make an impact. My key takeaway from quarantine sounds simple, but has so many implications. This is it. This could be your last day on campus, your last time to see a classmate going out-of-state next year, your last chance to cross

something off your bucket list with your high school friends. In your future endeavors, know that you have a limited amount of time. Take the time to invest in relationships rather than keeping them shallow. Challenge yourself to work harder, achieve more, accomplish goals. There are so many opportunities for each and every one of you, graduates. Have the passion to pursue them.

with a graduation ceremony. Even if a virtual ceremony is your reality, take the time to don your cap and gown. You earned it. If you have the luxury of an in-person ceremony, make it a priority to walk across the stage and have your principal hand you your diploma. You will not regret it. It is an honor to represent Bossier Parish and the Airline Vikings in so many ways, and an honor to celebrate with the Class of 2020.

These months are not solely for reflecting; after all, you succeeded in AP exams, sports seasons, drama This is it. productions, academic competitions, art projects, and maybe even Shannon Mathers a few debate tournaments. This is Airline High School Class of 2020 a season of celebration. Ride in a senior parade, paint your car with your college colors, relax by the pool knowing you do not have a summer reading assignment to procrastinate on. Dear Class of 2020,

F

irst let me begin with how deeply sorry I am. My words and thoughts cannot ease any of the sorrow of what you have endured and missed. This is not how I envisioned my first year as a Principal. I knew there would be challenges and obstacles. Never in my wildest imagination could I envision this. We are a strong people. A strong community. A strong school with a resolve like no other. I have given much thought to what message I could send to my Seniors. A message to offer encouragement and promise. In such a time where no one really has the answers, I decided to share with you what my late father once shared with me. We will all live through trying times. Times that will test our humanity. Times that will test our courage. We will live through events that will be remembered in history. Now is that time. The class of 2020 will long be remembered as the class that lived through this pandemic. Your children will read about these times in their history classes. My father told me that adversity will help identify and shape who you are. He said two things come out of adversity. It can make you bitter … or it can make you better. To allow bitterness to creep in would be easy. “I lost my prom”, “I lost my season,” “I lost all the memories that a final semester brings’.’ Instead, allow this time of uncertainty to make you BETTER. Use this experience to make you a BETTER son. A BETTER daughter. A BETTER sister. A BETTER brother. Many of you plan to further your education. Lean on this time to make you a BETTER student. Many will pursue a career in the military. Let this help you serve your country BETTER. One day, you can use this experience to make you a BETTER mother or BETTER father.

In the end, we all have so much to be thankful for. Let us all focus on these things. I wish you all the best and look forward to June 13th at 8:00 p.m. when we gather to celebrate your graduation at M.D. Ray Field at our own Airline Stadium! JUNE 2020

Dear Seniors,

I

will always remember the Class of 2020 because we began our time at Parkway together, you as students and I as the principal. I have been honored to watch you grow from your freshman year into the young adults you are today. Despite unparalleled times, I have watched you keep a positive outlook despite the adversity surrounding you this year. The many lessons you have learned during your time at Parkway will carry over into your next journey in life. As some of you approach college, some military service, and some the work force, you will hopefully find the skills you gained at Parkway valuable. I know that you will make us proud as you become the future leaders of our community. I’m extremely proud and honored to see you graduate on June 11, 2020. Even with virtual learning, losing some extracurricular activities, and being distant from friends, you were able to overcome challenges and complete the requirements for high school graduation. This alone speaks volumes in regards to your character, determination, and goal setting. Some of you will be doctors who will cure illnesses, some school teachers who will lead our next set of aspiring young minds, some community leaders who will solve major issues, and others parents to our future Parkway students. I know that you all will be successful in what you do, and most importantly how you achieve it. I’ve witnessed the fortitude you possess for the past four years on a daily basis. In closing, keep the faith and always continue towards the goals you have set for yourself. May you stay forever loyal to Parkway High School as our newest alumni. Congratulations Class of 2020! Sincerely, Waylon Bates Principal Parkway High School

Fellow Lions,

2020

irst let me share how proud I am of each one of you. I have known most of you for a long time (one of the many perks of a preK-12 school), and I know how many obstacles you had to overcome to get to this point. You never gave up, even when you could not see the light at the end of the tunnel. So regardless of the path you took, you can stand tall in the knowledge that you have accomplished this goal.

Salutatorian: JESSICA LYLES

Secondly, I would like to address the feelings that you are probably experiencing at this time. Yes, this pandemic has robbed you of many high school traditions: prom, last days with your teachers and classmates, final sports season, award banquets and assemblies, etc. Even graduation will look different. However, remember that this abrupt end does not take anything away from what you have achieved. Moreover, you will forever be the historic Covid-19 class of 2020 (and the record holders of Senior skip day!). Let this be a reminder that there is always a silver lining if you are willing to look for it. And what an extraordinary end for an extraordinary class!

Dana Aaliyah Wainwright Ar’Tavious Arkel WashingtonCarper Joseph Williams Jr.

As you take your next steps into the world, I want to encourage you to always strive to be better. The world needs you to be brave, to find new solutions for new problems, to stand up for what is right, especially when it’s difficult. Your family, friends, and teachers will continue to support you as you embark on this journey. I am looking forward to being amazed by how you will add your contribution to our world. Finally, I want to challenge you to come back to Plain Dealing when you complete the next chapter in your life and become leaders in your community. There is a very special bond between the people in this town. We are a family, and while we sometimes disagree, we do look out for each other. Continue this tradition with all your heart! Once a Lion, Always a Lion! Sandrina Isebaert Principal, Plain Dealing High School

Ashley Levesque Parkway High School My wonderful years at Parkway High School have come to a rather abrupt ending. There are so many memories I wasn’t able to have but the ones I do have are priceless. My favorite memory was Homecoming week my senior year. The week was spent dressing as the themes, decorating the school, and putting together the senior float. On that Friday morning, I was crowned PHS Homecoming Queen 2019! It is such an honor to have been voted amongst the entire student body, to represent the school that I love. That same evening, I walked down the field looking at the South Bossier that raised me into the young woman I am today. I looked at my family, friends, and teachers and was overwhelmed with joy. It’s a memory I will forever cherish and never forget.

Missed Senior prom, but had one at home with fam ily. Alivia Deen /B enton High Sc hool

As I go off to Louisiana State University, I will never forget the impact Benton High School and its teachers had on me. They encouraged me constantly, tutored in the early hours of the morning, and made learning enjoyable. They’ve prepared me for college, and they will definitely get a return on their investment. Because of Benton High School, I have been equipped to go make a difference in the world. Aidan McGhee Benton High Future LSU Stamps Scholar

My name is Madalyn Cunningham and I am a senior at Airline Highschool. I will be attending LSU in the fall! My favorite memories of highschool has tied with three! Being in Choir I was able to pursue my passion but also go on a choir trip to New York with one of my favorite teachers Amy Wakefield and my best friends. My sophomore year of highschool I met my all time favorite teacher who is now like a second mom to me and my forever life mentor Karyn Lipsey. Lastly, I met my two best friends for life Kiersten Pearson and Madison Lawrence.

Hello my name is Nicholas Buchanan. I was a senior at Bossier High School this year. I would like to thank all of my teachers that taught me over my 4 years at Bossier High school especially Coach Concilio, he really made a big impact on me and my 4 years at Bossier High. I will miss him and playing football with my teammates the most after high school. I will remember all the wins and losses of the football games we had over these last 4 years. My best memories are playing football each week of the season each year. I’ll miss the excitement of playing in the games and the way crowd in the stands sounds. I’ll miss the life long friends and brothers I made playing football. Because playing football together with these guys we became family and because I won’t be able to see them or joke around with them every day like when we were in school. Thank you so much for giving me a chance to tell you about my memories at Bossier High school.

A Girls State Governor Encourages Class of 2020 to Live Without Regrets Dear Class of 2020,

C

ongratulations on your hard work and diligence over these past four years. After conquering sleepless nights and dreaded Monday mornings, we finally made it! Graduation. Graduating from high school is no easy feat. Juggling school work, jobs, sports, clubs, and family responsibilities while trying to chart our future paths requires drive, discipline, and courage. It requires drive to sacrifice fun for homework or a work shift, activities necessary to pursue our goals. It requires discipline to develop skills needed to overcome our present challenges. It requires courage to introspect and decide who we want to become after leaving our nurturing and safe high schools and homes. COVID-19 abruptly tore us away from our last Friday Night lights, our last day of school, and

our final goodbyes to friends we have counted on since kindergarten. But let us not dwell on our missed opportunities. Before we tackle the next phase of our lives, let us use this time to strengthen our relationships, reminisce about the wonderful memories from high school, and internalize the lessons we have learned from our teachers and classes. Let us remember to be ever grateful for all our blessings and to live every moment fully without regrets. As we near our futures, we will face more important life-altering choices. I am confident that what we have learned from our teachers and our peers has equipped us to face these challenges with integrity and grace. I could not ask for a more encouraging or supportive family of teachers and friends, and I am very thankful I grew up with all of you by my side. I am proud to be a part of this Class of 2020. ~Bhavani Tivakaran

Bhavani Tivakaran Editor’s Note: Bhavani Tivakaran is a member of the Airline High School Class of 2020. She was elected the 2019-20 Governor of Louisiana Girls State and President of the Northwest Louisiana Teen Advisory Committee.
