Eight Delivers … America On July 4th Eight marks America’s Independence Day with PBS’ annual extravaganza, A Capitol Fourth, a star-studded event with a grand finale that features the greatest fireworks display in the nation. It’s a viewer favorite and a tradition we’re proud to continue.

in thiS iSSue: Contents Moment in Time Month At A Glance

At Eight, Arizona PBS we celebrate America all year long. There may not always be fireworks involved, but we dedicate our resources to programming that helps viewers discover – or rediscover – our history, culture, people and heritage. This month you’ll find the Ken Burns documentaries The Statue of Liberty and Lewis & Clark, the story of the expedition that stretched our nation’s boundaries to the Pacific; Mount Rushmore, an American Experience special that captures the story behind the creation of this grand monument; and Niagara Falls, our country’s first great symbol.

July Best Bets

Great Performances salutes America’s rich cultural life with two Metropolitan Opera productions and reveals the history of dance in America with Dancing at Jacob’s Pillow: Never Stand Still. The Shaw Festival: Behind the Curtain offers viewers one of North America’s most unique theater experiences, and an American Masters retrospective focuses on the work and life of filmmaker Elia Kazan.

Eight World Primetime

Of course, we also deliver programs about what’s going on in our state, our nation and around the world. At Eight, Arizona PBS you can count on reliable, in-depth public affairs coverage on Arizona Horizon, Horizonte, the PBS NewsHour, Washington Week, The McLaughlin Group and Moyers & Company. Once again, we are proud to celebrate the Fourth of July with you. Thanks to your ongoing support, we will continue to bring the American story into your home (and online and in schools).

CLASS IN SESSION

A growing body of research supports the many benefits arts engagement provides to a student’s education including academic achievement, leadership, social competencies and creative problem solving. These studies provide a compelling correlation between early arts learning and a young person’s motivation to learn by emphasizing active social engagement, disciplined and sustained attention, persistence and risk taking. Further benefits include increased self-confidence, self-control, conflict resolution, peer collaboration, empathy and social tolerance. Unfortunately, less than fifty percent of Arizona public schools provide integrated arts education in the curriculum with budget constraints identified as the barrier for participation. Now in its second year, Act One Foundation continues to address this need and respond to the compelling evidence to make a difference in the lives of Arizona’s students. The Foundation provides resources to underserved schools to take part in academically enriching arts learning opportunities through educational field trips to the visual and performing arts. Our belief is art learning encourages student participation with the arts and culture in their community and fosters civic engagement.

Investigating the worl d at Desert Botanical Garden.

Since the start of this academic year, Act One has expanded upon its founding principles by initiating and supporting systemic professional development for Arizona’s public school educators, facilitated curriculum instruction aligned to the Arizona Academic Standards in the Arts and greatly extended the reach of our educational sponsorships to include schools in Southern Arizona.
