The SMU Graduating Class of 2008 Yearbook is published by the Office of Alumni Relations and SMUSA for all graduands. Persons wishing to reproduce any portion of this Yearbook’s contents are required to write in advance for permission. Address enquiries to alumni@smu.edu.sg. We do not remember days; we remember moments. Cesare Pavese, The Burning Brand

And so this became the mantra to which we started creating this Yearbook for you, the graduating class of 2008. It was not to be a straight-and-narrow chronology of events you went through as a student, nor was it designed to be a politically-correct piece featuring popular, well-known and ‘must-have’ personalities. Within these pages, we hope you will find nuggets of wisdom from your peers and professors; pockets of joy as you flip through pictorial ‘milestone moments’; and pinches of bitter-sweet memories of your life on campus. This publication celebrates your journey in SMU – from where you began to where you are now – proud

and beaming graduates of one of the finest institutions in Singapore. We want this memento to leave its mark on you, jolting another memory, reliving another moment, and making a deeper impression each time you pore through its pages. And we hope that you too will leave your mark on society as you walk through the doors of SMU. As you transit from student to alumni, you join a growing community of more than three thousand SMU alumni who continue to be ambassadors of our alma mater. Stay connected with us. Play a vital role in shaping the future of SMU. And be a living example of someone who makes a difference.

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR COMMENCEMENT!

President’s Message Class of 2008, it is my great honour to mark this occasion with you. A university commencement – or graduation, as it is commonly known – is a long-standing tradition. It is a rite of passage for students who have been duly accredited after years of formal learning, to take that knowledge and put it to good and noble use. Hence, the term ‘commencement’, or the beginning, of a new and illuminated passage of life.

You are our fifth batch of graduates. You are the last group to have started your studies at the Bukit Timah campus. During your first year we paraded together along Bras Basah to establish SMU in its dynamic city location. You were among the first to utilise and benefit from the Li Ka Shing Library, new and purpose built campus facilities and experience our growth from four to six schools. Within the Class of 2008 are the first graduates from the School of Social Sciences. During the past four years you demonstrated leadership in myriad ways. You showed us your intelligence, enthusiasm and energy not only through what you know, but in how you think. We have been reminded many times since 2004 that you want to make a difference in all you do.

As you leave SMU, remember that you join the company of more than 3,600 alumni – graduates like yourselves who are now making their marks in Singapore and beyond. To quote Benjamin Franklin, “Well done is better than well said.” Like your fellow alumni, put your commitment into action. SMU alumni are ambassadors of their alma mater, and are proud to be part of this special family. I encourage you to stay connected – in four years you have established unforgettable relationships that will remain with you as you move into the world that awaits you. I wish you every success in all you choose to do.

Professor Howard Hunter President, Singapore Management University

SMU 2008 YEARBOOK

Completing a university degree is a substantial accomplishment. Your experience in SMU is no exception. You undertook not only coursework but engaged in unique SMU programmes that helped you explore creativity, engaged you in community service, and exposed you to the working world. Many of you travelled outside Singapore to explore other countries and to learn from their cultures. This foundation opened you to a world of possibilities.

This is our dream This is what we want THIS SERVES AS THE WIND BENEATH OUR WINGS

SMU has empowered us with the tools to succeed in life. I hope SMU will continue to be a sanctuary where world changing dreams and ideas are forged and may the accomplishments of the Class of 2008 be limited only by our own imaginations. Ngiang Boon Loong 2008 Salutatorian School of Information Systems

The four years at SMU has taught me the importance of efficiency. I guess everyone would agree that our workload is tremendous, with projects, tests and all. Knowing how to juggle our time between work and play has come to epitomise the SMU spirit. From the way we constantly click ‘Refresh’ to check our emails, I can truly say that learning in SMU has given me the ability to multi-task, and allowed me to do more within 24 hours. Chew Huai Fong School of Economics

SMU has given me many opportunities to discover numerous new experiences and frontiers that are beyond textbooks and class discussions.

Education is not just about acquiring knowledge, but also about character building. My university term in SMU was most insightful. Learning to deal with reality and myself in an environment that is supportive of change is irreplaceable. Best of all, I established beautiful friendships.

Ong Kah Chow School of Economics

I love SMU for its vibrancy, the professors, the learning opportunities, and the challenges. More importantly, I love SMU for the experiences and friendship that will stay with me way into the future! Stepfanie Cheong School of Accountancy

Cherilyn Tan School of Accountancy

We often gripe about how SMU is not the same school we fell in love with in our freshman year. Perhaps those endless hours spent on mugging were not lost time. Despite the competition, these four years have been a breathtaking sequence of lessons for me. My SMU education gave me the confidence to dream big, to persevere and to be a fighter. Most importantly, SMU made me appreciate relationships. It showed me that compassion and passion are part of success in life.

Anna Haotanto

SMU has given me a chance to join in activities I had not tried out before. The music scene at SMU is growing tremendously and I am proud to see it happen. The people involved are enthusiastic. The student crowd we perform to has been a crazy crowd. This is the type of support and fun you can only experience at SMU. Charimaine Lim Hui Xian School of Accountancy

SMU 2008 YEARBOOK

We Love SMU SMU is the door to my new life and dreams. It opened doors to opportunities and adventures that I did not even dream of. I remember those SMU ads about students being a gem to be polished. I would say SMU is a gem. It’s a place that lets SMU students and graduates shine brightly. I love SMU and may SMU continue to shine!

Jimmy Boh

SMU has not only given me an education. It has given me countless opportunities to stretch my potential, to reach for the impossible, to make friends with my professors, to mould myself into a person I respect and most importantly, to be able to face life with passion and determination. With the support of great friends and wonderful faculty, I saw myself through four years of University life with a smile on my face despite challenges I encountered. For that, SMU, I thank you and love you. Shalini Arul Lee Kong Chian School of Business

Lee Kong Chian School of Business

SMU has been a breathtaking four-year experience, to say the least. Being able to participate actively in university happenings has been a wonderful experience. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with so many different people on various committees and multi-faceted events. At the end of the day, all I can say is: life would never be the same after SMU. Thank you!

The two-year SMU MPA journey was certainly a fulfilling and humbling one.

Lee Kong Chian School of Business

When I first entered SMU, I thought my undergraduate experience would be different because SMU had a unique curriculum. This turned out to be only a small factor. The numerous opportunities to pioneer initiatives, network and champion causes are what I truly treasure. Victor Sim School of Economics

In the old campus, I met some amazing friends, Chen Baowei Aldric, Lai Kwok Loong aka Ah Long and Abdul Sharif. We formed a strong bond and met regularly for jogging sessions in the sports stadium at the old campus. Without their friendship, my SMU journey would not have been complete. Saravanan s/o Govindan Lee Kong Chian School of Business

SMU is more than just a school to me. It’s a place of good memories, laughter and friends. Leung Chi Ching School of Social Sciences

s s e in s u B f o l o o h c S n ia h C Lee Kong Dear Graduates, The end of four years as a student of the Lee Kong Chian School of Business marks an important milestone in your life. A new journey, filled with risks and opportunities, awaits you. I hope that we have prepared you well for this exciting journey with our broad-based curriculum and through your interaction with faculty members. We have strived to create a learning environment that expands possibilities for you to become successful. At the same time, we hope our School has also imparted to you sound values and a big heart. Mark Twain mentioned that he did not let his schooling interfere with his education. I hope you will not let your education in SMU get in the way of your life-long learning. Life should be lived forward. Its meaning, though, will become clearer only when you look back years from now. So stay connected with classmates and faculty members even as you seize the opportunities that will open as a result of your time at SMU.

I congratulate you on your success and look forward to seeing you again at our campus.

Dear Graduates,

I will always remember you all with much affection. I particularly appreciate the fact that you have all been very warm, open and ready to lend a hand whenever the school required your help. You have certainly debunked the stereotype of the boring accountant through your participation in student activities. You have helped the school excel. More importantly, you have helped to nurture and develop your juniors and you have played an important part in making our school a cohesive and enjoyable family. You have been true to the pioneering spirit of your seniors, and I hope that this spirit of caring and sharing will be passed down to your juniors. As you now embark upon a new phase in life, may I wish each and every one of you every success in your careers and in your lives. Be sure to keep in touch with your alma mater and one another. Come back and help your juniors and the school. We would love to have you return and see us often!

School of Economics To SMU graduates, Congratulations! You have fulfilled all the requirements and taken all the exams to qualify for graduation. However, as you leave SMU, you take away more than a university diploma: You have gained skills and knowledge to use wisely in the workplace. You have developed new and lasting friendships. Whatever you choose to do next, you are well-prepared. Years from now, as you reflect on your university moments, you will appreciate in new ways the relationships that you have built with friends and professors and, perhaps, even deans. This inaugural yearbook allows you to secure your visual memories of your SMU experience. We hope that it reminds you of the energy and enthusiasm you brought to SMU during your years with us. With best wishes,

s m te s y S n o ti a rm fo In School of To the 2nd batch of BSc (ISM) graduates: While those very first batches of pioneer students in each of the SMU schools blazed a trail, it’s all of those subsequent batches of students who do the heavy lifting year after year to build the sustaining reputation of the university. I would like to congratulate the second batch of BSc (ISM) graduates. You are the ones who survived the massive process of reshaping and refining the curriculum throughout your four years. Your seniors set things in motion. Once your class saw the possibilities, you went beyond what anyone, including yourselves, thought was possible. To all of you from all SMU schools: I hope that all of you do your best to demonstrate, to yourselves and to the world at large, the quality and capability of SMU people. Please remember our pleas for professionalism and integrity in everything that you do. That will do more for your reputation and the value of your human capital ‘currency’ than any type of short-cut.

Learning Doesn’t Stop. At SMU, our post-graduate students come from different industries and countries. Their presence contribute to the vibrancy of the campus, and of course, they are a significant part of the ‘SMU difference’. As you can see from these snapshots, post-graduates believe in equal amounts of work and play.

YOU MADE A DIFFERENCE! I HAVE HAD VERY WONDERFUL PEOPLE AS MENTORS AND PEERS HERE AT SMU. All of you have been integral parts of my journey and I thank you for all that we have worked on together. I hope that all of you will find your own niche and benefit from the skills and networks made at SMU, while enjoying whatever pursuits you are after along the way. Everyone believes that we will blaze the trail for others to follow, me too. Diligence, more often than not, begets success. Let us love others the way we want to be loved. Cheers!

Martin Luther King once said, ‘Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education’. Gandhi revealed that ‘Knowledge without Character’ is a deadly sin. As such, SMU must set her sights on becoming a mecca for both intellectual and character development. Zheng Renjie

SMU is a second home for all of us. I believe every student will want the university to become even better in future. Let’s work towards this goal by being actively involved even as we step into the corporate arena. Ben Toh Chairman, Graduates’ Night Organising Committee 2008 School of Accountancy

The SMU Spirit All your hard work has finally paid off. On behalf of the SIS family, I would like to thank you for everything you’ve contributed to the school.

My Social Science comrades of the pioneer batch,  we salute your well-earned achievement.

YOU ARE OUR BENCHMARK.

TO BOLDLY GO WHERE NO ONE HAD GONE BEFORE, YOUR SWEAT AND TEARS HAVE PAVED THE ROAD FORWARD FOR THE REST OF US.

I hope that SIS will always stay close to your heart. All the best in your future endeavours!

Congratulations! You have finally reached the threshold of an uncertain, yet exciting chapter of your lives. All the best in your endeavours as you set out on a journey to make a difference and leave your mark.

I’VE ALWAYS WONDERED WHY WE CALL IT ‘COMMENCEMENT’ WHILE OTHERS CALL IT ‘CONVOCATION’.

AND IN PURSUING YOUR DREAMS, MAY YOU GO FORTH IN FAITH, COURAGE AND CONFIDENCE. As Horace would say, ‘Carpe Diem’. Seize the Day! Chua Jia Ying President, SMU Accounting Society

Then it dawned on me. This memorable day isn’t about what you have achieved these four years at SMU. It’s about the road that lies ahead. Although uncertain, your new chapter is paved with gold. Here’s wishing you an exciting journey and don’t grow up too soon! QUEK Pin Shen, Roy President, SMU Law Society

I want to congratulate each one of you for achieving another milestone in your life. The world is your oyster, so go out there and have an exciting adventure. Do not be afraid to take risks. DARE TO VENTURE INTO THE UNKNOWN. And learn something new every year! I wish all of you happiness and fulfillment in whatever you do. WINSTON KOH

Fine... go graduate, go be alumni, go be trailblazers, GO BE SUPERSTARS... but remember never to stop learning, unlearning, and relearning... you can never finish learning accounting.

This is a philosophy I always stand by:

Congratulations! You made it! I am so proud of you. You have worked hard and scaled a new height. After all the projects and exams, you are ready to take on the real world. EMBRACE YOUR BRIGHT FUTURE; make all your dreams come true. I wish the best for you.

75 “I CANNOT TEACH ANYBODY ANYTHING, I CAN ONLY MAKE THEM THINK.” Socrates

I hope you will benefit from it and appreciate its relevance once you enter what you always call the ‘real world’. MASSIMILIANO LANDI Assistant Professor of Economics School of Economics

Each of you is to be heartily congratulated on achieving a milestone of excellence. As you prepare for the next challenge, and subsequent ones in your life journey, remember the distinguishing qualities you have forged in your stay at SMU. BE HUMBLE, BE COMPASSIONATE, AND SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE, IDEAS AND WISDOM FREELY IN YOUR NEW PURSUITS; but, simultaneously, be strong and determined in your leadership so that society is better for everyone. SMU proudly endorses your future success. You have lifted the bar for all of us. PROF JJ WILLIAMS Practice Associate Professor of Accounting School of Accountancy

I may not know all of you or have the opportunity to be your instructor. But I do know that every SMU graduate is confident and well equipped for the real world challenges. NO MATTER WHERE YOU MAY BE, WHAT YOU MAY BE DOING IN FUTURE, REMEMBER OUR SMU CORE VALUES and contribute back to the society in big and small ways. MICHELLE CHEONG (aka CAT woman) Practice Assistant Professor of Information Systems School of Information Systems

Congratulations on making it through SMU. And thank you for doing it in such great style. It has been a rare privilege – not to mention pleasure – to work with such intelligent, extraordinary and interesting people. NOW IT’S UP TO YOU TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Who knows? Some of the things you learned at SMU may even come in handy. (But probably not in the ways you think they will). I wish all of you the very best. STEVEN NEY Assistant Professor of Political Science School of Social Sciences

Heartiest congratulations to you on your graduation! This is a big step in your life as you will now enter the real world. There are many things I would like to share with you. But there is one thing that I feel would be most valuable to you: In life, many things will not turn out the way you expect or plan it to be. You need to keep an open mind, learn from experiences, and keep looking forward. YOU CANNOT DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE OF LIFE LOOKING AT THE REAR VIEW MIRROR ALL THE TIME.  Please keep in touch. I wish you the very best in your future endeavors and a glorious career(s) ahead! ANG SER KENG Senior Lecturer of Finance Lee Kong Chian School of Business

As you commence your career, dare to dream. For, if dreams die, it is like a bird without its wings. Find your passion. Make it work for you and for others. Follow your passion into a vocation.
