Heart disease is a leading cause of hospitalizations, but as Dr. Paul Gilbert says, “small consistent changes can greatly reduce your risk of a serious cardiac event.”

Laurie is an avid hiker and cyclist who loves the outdoors and enjoys the beauty of Prescott. She also has a menagerie of pets to keep her smiling!

Dr. Gilbert, Medical Director of Exceptional Community Hospital, tells us to get moving, eat right, stress less, sleep more and know your numbers. By that he means, get checkups to monitor cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar.

ll roads to wellness at some point lead to the heart.

Official pumper of blood, connected throughout our bodies by arteries and veins, the heart is mission headquarters for everything happening in our beautiful, complicated bodies. Taking care of our hearts is a No. 1 goal.

TAKE IT FROM THE EXPERTS We turn to the American Heart Association for all things heart related.

Deaths resulting from cardiovascular diseases have been cut in half since its founding in 1924.

Their 2028 Impact Goal is to “drive breakthroughs and implement proven solutions in science, policy and care for healthier people and communities.”

These experts share news about people whose

lives have been saved, or touched, by heart disease and treatments toward healthier hearts. From stories about a heart transplant patient’s new purpose to a dramatic daughter-and-father tale of CPR training coming to the rescue, the heart association covers the gamut of heart-related news.

WHAT WE CAN DO Pick a topic, any topic, and you can learn everything there is to know about aortic aneurysms… or arrhythmia… or cardiac arrest on the American Heart Association website.

The site provides a guide to your health care journey, from heart disease resources to understanding and engaging in the process of your care.

As importantly, it provides resources for

caregivers, stroke recovery programs and continuing e-news for those who want to keep up on the latest breakthroughs in heart health. There is a support network divided by categories that includes ways to become involved.

Steps to a healthy heart are simple in theory, hard to maintain. Diet and exercise are, as always, front and center. A hearthealthy diet consists of reasonable portions with more fruits and vegetables, more whole grains and less unhealthy fat. Lean meat and fish are to be lauded, and fatty, fried food is to be avoided.

Please quit smoking if you smoke, slow down on the alcohol if you drink and maintain a healthy weight. If that was so easy, however, there wouldn’t be bazillions of dollars in weight loss products

and programs on the market. We know it’s easier said than done.

“Manage stress” is another recommendation, and you may protest, “But you haven’t met my boss!”

Or seen your to-do list.

Or dealt with your family drama. Do your best and while you’re at it, try to get a good night’s sleep.

FIND YOUR TRIBE When it comes to being heart-healthy, find your tribe of like-minded people committed to their own cardiovascular health.

Look for friends who, oh, by the way, also like to ride their bikes. Join a team that does your sport, ask a neighbor to go on a walk, invite your kids to explore a park with you.

It’s always easier when we’re together with the ones we love, the ones in our hearts.

id you know the leading cause of death in the United States is cardiovascular disease? Cardiovascular disease is a broad term for conditions affecting the heart and blood vessels.

The disease is often caused by plaque buildup that narrows the arteries leading to heart attacks and strokes.

It also can lead to things such as heart failure, arrhythmias and high blood pressure. I bet if you asked, you know someone on a high blood pressure medication around or maybe you are taking one.

This disease stems from major risk factors that are lifestyle-related such as poor diet, alcohol,

smoking and inactivity. Risk factors also include high cholesterol and diabetes.

As I have shared before, nutrition, exercise and daily habits are the most important foundation in your life. This year I challenge you as the reader to give up one thing — maybe it’s soda or alcohol — that no longer

serves your body or health and start creating small habits one by one!

In addition, add something good for you such as daily walks or drinking more water.

Don’t let yourself be a statistic in the leading cause of death in our country! Do better, and feel better.

e’re all looking for that magic space where exercise will be, if not a breeze, at least transformative. Costly gym memberships and expensive equipment may deter us from building the abs and glutes we deserve.

But that’s no excuse anymore: core sliders are here to change your body and change your mind.

The website SheFit. com sings the praises of sliders on its blog under the headline Are Sliders a Good Workout? In spite of the precarious nature of a slip-and-slide disc under your foot or hand, sliders increase the difficulty of simple exercises, which in turn forces us to use stabilizer muscles, pushing larger muscles to work harder.

Plus, sliders are inexpensive, and you can improvise using towels, socks or paper plates if you want to experiment.

FROM THE INSIDE OUT One of the benefits of sliders is they put your core to work in ways regular exercises don’t. Arms, abs and shoulders need to work

overtime once you’ve put sliders underneath your feet. Doing a pushup while keeping them steady gives a workout that incorporates more muscles than a regular pushup would require.

What are core sliders, exactly?

They are small, disc-like accessories that add an extra layer of difficulty to your workout routine while offering additional benefits. Typically, they are designed from tough plastic although you can go all bougie and get upscale bamboo discs.

Whatever their content material, one side is smooth and the other may be padded. The sliders can be used on yoga mats, carpet, tile and hardwood, and their light weight means you can tuck them in your suitcase when you travel.

GENTLE ON THE JOINTS Another benefit of core sliders is the smooth motion of your movements is easy on your joints.

Gliding into strength provides an option for a low-impact workout with a high return.

Trail Spotlight:

BANNIE & AMULET MINE TRAIL he Bannie and Amulet Mine Trail winds through the northern Bradshaw Mountains just outside Prescott, offering a mix of forested terrain, rocky sections and wide-open viewpoints. The trail connects historic mining areas and showcases how rugged and remote this region once was.

It is a great option for a halfday trip and works well for small groups or families looking to experience a little history along with their trail time.

Expect a steady pace rather than long technical obstacles.

This trail is more about the experience, the scenery and the story behind the landscape than pushing the limits of your rig.

A TRAIL THAT BRINGS HISTORY TO LIFE The Bradshaws were once alive with miners chasing gold and silver, and the Bannie and Amulet Mine Trail gives you a direct look into that past.

Standing near what remains of each mine, it is easy to picture the world as it was, with hard-working prospectors carving a life out of the mountain rock. It adds a layer of meaning to the drive and makes the trail feel like more than just another route through the trees.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE TRAIL The terrain along the trail is varied enough to keep the day interesting.

Drivers can expect loose rock, narrow sections, mild off-camber stretches and a few rocky climbs that require careful tire placement.

Pine-covered hills give way to open viewpoints. Wildlife sightings are common, especially early in the

morning. It is a great trail to bring the family, with plenty of spots to stop for photos, snacks or a moment to enjoy the quiet that comes with being deep in the mountains.

VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS A high clearance 4x4 is strongly recommended for this trail. While heavily built rigs are not required, vehicles should be in good mechanical condition with proper tires and recovery points. Stock capable 4x4s with good all-terrain tires can handle the trail when driven with care.

Low range is helpful in rocky sections, especially after weather changes. This trail is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace, allowing drivers to pick clean lines and avoid unnecessary trail damage.

TRAIL ETIQUETTE AND SAFETY Bring plenty of water, pack layers for changing mountain weather and make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. Communication devices like GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) radios help keep groups connected, especially since cell service can be unreliable.

Travel with at least one other vehicle whenever possible, and follow Leave No Trace principles.

Respect historic sites by leaving artifacts undisturbed.

FINAL THOUGHTS Pack a lunch, grab your people and spend a few hours tracing the footsteps of early Prescott miners.

This trail is a reminder of how much history and natural beauty surround us and why getting out and exploring Arizona never gets old.

here are some much needed conversations happening in the fitness space, and the benefits of weight training (especially for women and older adults) is one of them.

Look, I’m a lifter, I get it. Strong, sculpted muscles, resilient joints and dense bones? I’m in.

Lifting weights provides a powerful boost to quality of life. But lifting doesn’t do it all. If you want to maximize your health benefits with exercise, you need cardio — yes, need it.

WHAT CONSTITUTES CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH? A healthy cardiovascular system means the heart and blood vessels work efficiently to circulate oxygen throughout the body. We all want strong hearts, clear arteries and good blood pressure, but most of all: we want to do the things we love without being so gosh-darn out of breath!

When we challenge this system with aerobic exercise, what we’re really doing is increasing the

ability of the heart to meet our demands for oxygen.

So, demand away.

WHY LIFTING WEIGHTS DOESN’T CUT IT, + THE SCIENCE Let’s nerd-out for a second. I love a wellplaced, “Does this count as cardio?” as much as anyone. So why is the answer no?

When we engage in heavy lifting, we produce lots of mechanical tension. This tension temporarily spikes blood

pressure, which reduces the efficiency of oxygen transport. While heart rate may increase, stroke volume (the amount of blood pumped per beat) does not. BPM goes up, but efficiency goes down.

And while that set of 5 squats really made you work, the total demand for oxygen was very low.

What we really need: a sustained demand for oxygen, with less muscular strain. Enter: swimming, rowing, running, cycling, brisk walking, etc.

HOW TO IMPLEMENT BOTH If you try to get better at everything at once, prepare to do so slowly.

Spending a training block working cardio more than strength — and then the reverse — could get you faster results. And, if you’re not working out at all, here’s some juice that’s worth the squeeze: some data show that the biggest benefits occur in the first several hours of weekly activity. Go get after it.

Your heart will thank you.

OX Media has supported the annual Whiskey Row Marathon as a sponsor for a number of years.

This year, we’re putting ourselves into the races with a team of runners made up of our staff; mostly runners in training.

While our staff is active in weightlifting, Pilates, yoga, hiking and other physical activities, only one of us regularly runs marathons, so this will

be a true couch-to-race experience for the rest, and we’re up for the challenge.

In addition to the sense of accomplishment we hope to feel upon completion of our races, we plan to take full advantage of the healthy lifestyle benefits running is shown to have while we train and build new habits.

hen people talk about cardio health, they usually picture treadmills, running shoes or a gym membership they’re hoping to use more often. But let me offer a much better — and way more fun — option: a pet. Especially a dog. Because nothing gets your (and their) heart pumping quite like those words, “Let’s go for a walk!”

Dogs are incredible personal trainers. They don’t care if it’s early, chilly or if you’re feeling a little unmotivated. They just know it’s time to move. And before you know it, you’re

walking, jogging, hiking or tossing a ball in the yard.

It doesn’t feel like exercise. It feels like spending time together.

Even a simple daily walk can make a big difference for heart health. Walking helps improve circulation, lower blood pressure, reduce stress and keep your heart strong.

And when you’re walking with your dog, you tend to walk longer and more often.

Cats may not grab a leash and head out the door, but don’t underestimate them when it comes to keeping you moving. Chasing a laser pointer down the hallway, tossing toys or even getting

up and down repeatedly because your cat has decided they need something right now definitely counts.

Less stress means less strain on your heart. A few minutes of petting a dog or listening to a cat purr can literally help slow your heart rate and lower blood pressure.

give us routine, purpose and something to show up for every day. They get us outside, pull us out of our heads and remind us to live in the moment. A healthier heart isn’t just about physical activity — it’s about feeling connected, supported and happy.

Yoga Mat KNOCK YOU OUT OF CLASS

Yoga studios sell calm, health and balance. But look past the incense and soft lighting and there is a less serene reality on the floor.

Y

oga mats can carry germs, and yes, illness can spread through them.

A yoga mat comes into close contact with skin, sweat, hands, feet and sometimes faces. Warm rooms and moisture create an ideal environment for bacteria and fungi

to hang around.

Studies on gym equipment have found common microbes like staph bacteria, including MRSA, as well as fungi that can cause athlete’s foot and ringworm. Viruses that cause colds and flu do not live as long on surfaces, but they can survive long enough to move from mat to hand to face.

The biggest risk comes from shared or rental mats.

If the person before you had a skin infection, a foot fungus or an open cut, germs can transfer.

Even healthy people shed bacteria naturally, especially when sweating.

Over time, that builds up.

That said, most people will not get seriously sick from a yoga mat. The risk is low, but it is not zero.

Minor skin infections are the most common issue. Think itchy rashes, small sores or stubborn foot fungus. These are annoying, not dangerous, but they are preventable.

CLEANING MAKES THE DIFFERENCE If you bring your own mat and clean it regularly, your risk drops sharply.

For people who practice several times a week, mats should be lightly cleaned after every session.

This does not need to be complicated. A simple spray made of water and a small amount of gentle soap works well. Many studios sell mat sprays, but plain dish soap diluted in water does the job just fine. Wipe the mat down, especially where hands and feet go, and let it dry fully before rolling it up.

Once a week, or every few practices, give your mat

a deeper clean. Check the manufacturer’s instructions first. Some mats can go in the washing machine on a gentle cycle. Others do better in a bathtub with warm water and mild soap.

Avoid harsh disinfectants like bleach unless your mat specifically allows it.

These can break down the material and leave residue that irritates skin.

Rental mats should be cleaned by studios after every use. If you are not sure that happens, bring a towel to place over the mat, or wipe it down yourself before class. Many experienced yogis do.

There are a few extra habits that help.

Wash your hands before and after class. Keep your feet clean. Avoid practicing with open cuts or uncovered skin infections. Let your mat dry completely after cleaning, since damp mats invite bacteria back in.

According to Everyday Health, oxidative stress can play a role in turning hair gray: this happens when certain types of molecules hurt the body’s cells, inhibiting the cells producing pigment.

Genes also play a role in gray hair at an early age.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS Brittle hair may be more than a styling challenge.

Cushing’s syndrome is a rare condition caused by too much cortisol, and one of the symptoms is brittle hair.

Other symptoms include high blood pressure, bruises and back pain, and it can also be caused by certain types of medication.

When the thyroid gland isn’t producing thyroid hormones, the result is a condition called hypothyroidism. One of the symptoms is thinning hair and a change in the hair’s texture and appearance.

Other symptoms include neck pain, dry skin, jaundice and weight gain. Tests are available to diagnose and treat the disease.

Low iron also can result in a loss of hair, a result of iron-deficiency anemia. Iron is critical for many biological and chemical reactions including hair growth, according to Rebecca Baxt, MD, a dermatologist in New Jersey. Those who are vegetarians might experience low iron and subsequent hair loss, and women who experience heavy menstrual cycles can also be affected.

PILE ON THE PROTEIN Another link to hair loss is a lack of protein. If you aren’t getting enough protein in your diet, add eggs, lentils, wild salmon and nonfat Greek yogurt to the menu. When someone has gastrointestinal issues or

has just undergone gastric bypass surgery, they may have problems digesting protein.

Dandruff doesn’t usually indicate a serious health problem and can usually be treated with over-thecounter shampoo. However, flakes and patches with scales, a rash or itchiness could indicate a fungus, dry skin, psoriasis or eczema.

The best way to determine if there’s a link to any health problem is to consult a physician.

For shiny, healthy hair, make sure you don’t deprive yourself of protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc by going on a crash diet. The lack of nutrients will stunt hair growth and leave hair dull and limp.

Stay out of the sun and protect your hair with a hat when you go out. Lay off the flat iron and use products that protect your hair from blow drying damage. If you’re coloring your hair, make sure to use professional products that minimize the effects of chemicals.

Keep an eye on that mane of yours and stay healthy.

hy do we consistently refer to our hearts as being the storage unit for our emotions? How many times have each of us said things like: “I love … with all my heart; My heart is broken; He/she wears their heart on their sleeve; Follow your heart; etc.?”

These references are the result of a common human assumption that we use our heart to make our human connections, fall in love and bond with or feel rejection from others.

In reality there is a conversation in each of us going on between our brain and our heart. This is called the heart-brain connection.

Our hormones transmit through our blood to our brain, which causes the emotional response. Our brain then immediately sends that message to our heart, which is where we “feel” the emotion through pounding, racing, fluttering and an increase in blood pressure.

Some of us struggle with this internal process, feeling as if we are on a never-ending roller coaster of extreme highs and

desperate, dark lows. This type of extreme reaction can be caused by many things, one of which is untreated trauma.

When we experience a significantly traumatic act, our heart-brain message is fight, flight or freeze. If this goes unaddressed or a person experiences repeated trauma, it can cause their body to alter the way it sends these messages back and forth between the heart and the brain, causing highs of unreasonable euphoria, lows of hopelessness or a never-ending cycle between the two that takes a toll on our body.

But when a person processes their trauma and regulates their emotions to accomplish a sense of peace, it can have profound effects on their heart health.

Living with a happy heart is not a result of never having bad things happen. Living with a happy heart is to live in the present, let go of negativity, form deep connections, practice gratitude and show empathy, even in tough times.

here’s evidence that exposure to the outdoors through our gardens can reduce stress, manage anxiety and depression and generate a kind of euphoria that contributes to a sunny outlook.

A BUILT-IN SANCTUARY What is a garden but a built-in sanctuary as well as a laboratory for learning? Podcaster and psychologist Seth J. Gillihan, Ph.D., grew up gardening, learning from his father’s example.

To explore the benefits of gardening, he took to his podcast Think, Act, Be and interviewed professional gardener Joe Lamp’l, creator of JoeGardener.com, to discuss how gardening can contribute to good mental health documented on PsychologyToday.com.

According to them, being a gardener makes us more in tune with our

surroundings. Is it going to rain? Where does the sun land, and how long does it stay? Having a garden takes our focus away from ourselves and forces us to give up, or at least come to terms with, perfectionism.

Whether you’re planting flowers along the sidewalk or tilling soil for a full-on vegetable garden, there’s a loss of control and a leap of faith required.

EMPOWERED THROUGH GROWTH Gardening gives us plenty of opportunities to make mistakes. The ability to continue to make mistakes and celebrate them is what Stanford psychology professor Carol Dweck calls a “growth mindset.”

Famous for her book Mindset, Dr. Dweck touts the benefits of making mistakes and adjusting to them along the way.

Gardens provide ample chances to succeed and if not, try, try again.

Maybe you planted those seedlings too close together.

Heating Pads CAN SAVE TIME, MONEY

H

eat therapy is a goto for many people when they tweak a muscle during a workout or wake up with a new pain in their shoulder or back.

They may buy an electric heating pad or dig one out of their closet or drawer if they have one, but neither activity is appealing when you’re achy and cranky.

In most cases a homemade heating pad will suffice. First, let’s look at when heat therapy is and isn’t a good idea.

THE HEAT IS ON Dry and moist heat are both time-honored treatments for muscular pain, and many studies back up their effectiveness when used correctly.

Dry heat comes from sources like a heating pad, dry heating packs (like TheraCare) or a sauna.

Wet heat emanates from steamed towels, moist heating packs, warm baths or hot tubs.

Heat therapy works by drawing more blood flow to the affected area, letting muscles relax and reducing stiffness in joints.

Some research has found that moist heat is more

effective than dry heat after being applied for a shorter period of time, though the moisture can make it less convenient to use.

Mushroom Coffee

IS A THING

W

hen I first heard about mushroom coffee, my mind immediately went into a Seinfeld bit, asking in that nasal, Seinfeld way, “Mushroom coffee? What’s up with THAT?” As a coffee aficionado for many years, I was sure that mushrooms and coffee should remain in two distinctly different conversations.

But it is a thing, mushroom coffee. And although there aren’t any clinical trials or official studies to sing its praises, there’s plenty of information out there about mushroom coffee’s benefits. According to UCLA Health, mushroom coffee is a blend of ground mushrooms and ground coffee beans. The taste is supposed to be similar or for the undiscerning, the same.

NOT IN THE PRODUCE AISLE These mushrooms aren’t the kind you’d chop up for a salad. Manufacturers of

mushroom coffee use medicinal mushrooms such as reishi, chaga and lion’s mane to grind into the drink.

Those who market these brews claim there are numerous health benefits to the mushroom side of the equation, and while these may not be proven claims, there is a long history of using mushrooms in healing.

Plant-based compounds called adaptogens help the body respond to stress and have been used for many centuries as part of Chinese medicine.

These can affect cortisol levels, which reduce the effects of stress on the body. Also, since only about half of the cup of coffee is actually coffee, there’s a decrease in the amount of caffeine ingested, reducing those jittery effects and improving sleep quality. The mushrooms also contain a variety of

antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation.

POTENTIAL DOWNSIDES According to the folks at UCLA, the biggest downside to mushroom coffee may be the cost that typically is twice as much as regular coffee.

There’s also some evidence that the extracts used can be hard on the digestive system.

Some mushrooms have high levels of something called oxalates, which can exacerbate kidney issues, possibly leading to kidney stones.

The folks at GoodRx. com warn that while mushrooms do have benefits, different varieties can interact with medication. They recommend you consider that prior to drinking mushroom coffee.

Another caveat: these aren’t hallucinogenic mushrooms, hailing

from the 1960s as “magic mushrooms.”

No psychedelic effects will occur, and the most adverse reaction you may have is you might not like its earthy taste compared to your regular cup of coffee.

There are studies that show mushroom coffee made with cordyceps, a particularly wormy looking fungi, has more antioxidants than regular coffee. That helps the immune system and can decrease chronic inflammation. Those antioxidants also are great in fighting free radicals that may contribute to diseases like cancer, heart disease and dementia.

Some studies have shown that lion’s mane mushrooms can help improve mood and boost cognition, improving memory, movement and executive functioning, and some mushrooms improve gut health.

Lettuce PACKS UNEXPECTEDLY HIGH LEVEL OF NUTRIENTS

ettuce tends to get buried in the nutritional hierarchy of leafy green vegetables.

Kale, spinach, arugula, even collard greens and chard get more respect than this flimsy yet essential element of most salads, sandwiches and burgers. And we’re always whining about it getting stuck in our teeth.

Lettuce does have much to contribute to our diets, starting with water itself, which comprises up to 95% of its content, so it’s a good secondary defense against dehydration.

Beyond that, the nutrients available from lettuce depends on which variety you consume. We’ll list some of the more nutritious ones below, but as a general rule the darker the leaf, the more benefits you’ll reap from this very low-calorie food.

ROMAINE One of the world’s bestselling lettuces and the base of the near-universally beloved Caesar salad, romaine can work in many other salads and is the most common substitute for bread on sandwiches and burgers.

A two-cup serving of romaine contains just 20 calories, with 1.24 grams of protein and 1.8 grams of fiber, which can add up in a big salad. It’s also got 260 milligrams of potassium, vital for blood pressure regulation and other key processes.

GREEN LEAF LETTUCE This form of lettuce is found in a wide variety of salads and adorns many sandwiches and burgers. It’s heartier than perennial bestseller iceberg lettuce and is higher in many nutrients, so it’s worth considering

for many culinary uses.

A serving of this lettuce has about 22 calories and 1.1 grams of protein.

RED LEAF LETTUCE The vivid reddish hue seen on the outer edges of this kind of lettuce is an indicator of the antioxidants that reside within. These include beta-carotene, which strengthens eye health, and anthocyanins, which have been linked to reduced inflammation.

Consuming two cups of red-leaf lettuce brings you 18 calories and 0.88 gram of protein. There’s also 321 milligrams of potassium and 73 micrograms of vitamin K, or more than two-thirds of the recommended daily value.

OWNER, CLUB PILATES PRESCOTT AND SEDONA HOW DO YOU DEFINE A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE? For me, a healthy lifestyle is one that nurtures both the body and mind, encouraging joy, challenge and growth in every aspect of life. It’s about finding balance, embracing new experiences and prioritizing well-being in a way that promotes long-term health and happiness.

HOW DID YOU COME TO PRACTICE IN YOUR CAREER FIELD? I jokingly refer to myself as a “recovering accountant.”

Like many people, I decided in 2020/2021 that I needed to make some changes to my lifestyle. I started going to Pilates three times a week and reduced my hours at work.

It wasn’t long before I fully committed to instructor

training and opening my own Pilates studio.

WHAT ARE YOUR BIGGEST HEALTH AND WELLNESS TIPS? I like to ask people what they still want to be able to do when they are 80 years old. For me, it is gardening and going on hikes with my family. I think for most people, regardless of the specific answer, we all want to maintain independence as we age.

To do this, we must maintain strength, flexibility and balance. I fell in love with Pilates because it

shifts the focus from losing weight and training for swimsuit season to training for strength and independence.

So, my tip is to find an exercise or activity that helps you build and maintain the muscle strength and balance you need to continue doing the things you love throughout your life.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HEALTHY MEAL? I could eat sushi or grilled fish with veggies for any meal — including breakfast.
