St. Joseph’s Westgate Hospital Celebrating Fifth Anniversary, Looking Forward to Continued Growth
ignity Health St. Joseph’s Westgate Hospital celebrated its fifth anniversary in May with gratitude to the community and plans to continue expanding and improving the services it offers to the West Valley. Since opening on May 13, 2014, the hospital has become a valued member of Glendale and the West Valley, caring for more and more patients every year. Today, St. Joseph’s Westgate Hospital is recognized for medical excellence and compassionate patient care. Healthgrades recently awarded the hospital a 2019 America’s Best 100 Hospitals Award, a recognition that only 2% of U.S. hospitals receive.

“With the West Valley’s strong support, we have been able to grow and enhance our services, including specialized programs in colorectal surgery, robotic surgery, orthopedics, emergency care and bariatrics,” says Tina Brucato-Day, Vice President of Operations at the hospital. “We are grateful to be part of this community.”
Keeping Pace with the West Valley The number of patients coming to St. Joseph’s Westgate has grown significantly in just the past year. For example, 339 patients came to the hospital for surgery in April 2019, compared to 157 in July 2018. The Emergency Department has seen similar growth, caring for 33% more patients in April 2019 than in July 2018. To meet the increasing demand for surgical care, the hospital will open an ambulatory surgery center on its campus in the coming months. The center will feature four operating suites and one procedures room. Two “urgency centers” — offering both emergency care and urgent care — will be added in the West Valley, one at Litchfield and Camelback roads and another at Bell Road and 51st Avenue.
Nationally Recognized for Specialty Care In its first five years, St. Joseph’s Westgate has earned impressive recognition for its
specialty surgical programs. Earlier this year, the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) awarded the hospital Center of Excellence accreditations in both colorectal surgery and robotic surgery. Even more impressively, St. Joseph’s Westgate, along with its sister hospital St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, was the first hospital in Arizona to receive the robotic surgery accreditation, and one of three facilities in the United States to have achieved the Center of Excellence in Colorectal Surgery accreditations. “These accreditations demonstrate our commitment to delivering safe, high-quality care to our patients,” says Brucato-Day. “We are working to earn similar recognition for our weight-loss program.”
Responding to the Obesity Crisis
According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity affects more than 93 million American adults and contributes to many health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke and osteoarthritis. St. Joseph’s Westgate Hospital is taking aim at this national crisis through its weight-loss program, which offers professional one-on-one consultations, a medically supervised weight-loss program, a surgical weight-loss program, and ongoing counseling support for weight-loss patients. “Obesity is a major problem in Arizona and across the country,” Brucato-Day says. “Our weight-loss program gives patients the tools they need to make lasting changes to their well-being. It is one example of our commitment to improving the health of the West Valley.”
