Yin Yoga is unique as you are asked to relax in the asanas, soften the muscle and move closer to the connective tissues, offering a deeper access to the body. Flexibility decreases over time and Yin Yoga is a wonderful way to maintain your flexibility. No class May 27 and Sept. 2. Instructor: Gutierrez Location: Foothills Rec Center 14 | SUMMER - 2019

RANGER'S

CORNER

uly and August may be considered the Dog Days of Summer, but in Arizona, dogs and many times people should not be outside in the heat of the day. Glendale officials want to remind residents to stay safe and protect themselves from the potentially deadly heat this summer. The high night temperatures do not allow for the body to cool down and can result in more people being at risk for dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Children, elderly and animals are even more susceptible to heat-related illness.

Important information to keep in mind this time of year to avoid heatrelated illness: •

Increase fluid intake, regardless of activity level.

Limit exercise/outdoor activity 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Wear a hat, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing and sunglasses.

Rest frequently in shaded areas to recover and cool down.

Never leave infants, children or pets inside a parked vehicle.

Check on elderly neighbors to make sure their air conditioning is working and in use.

Take advantage of free airconditioned spaces by visiting shopping malls, libraries, or other heat refuge locations.

This is especially important for hiking enthusiasts who may be out at Thunderbird Conservation Park or other Glendale trails; heat-related tips specific to hiking include: •

Drink 1-2 liters of water per hour while hiking (1 L = approx. 34 oz.) The body can lose 2-4 liters of water when active during high temps.

When half of your water is gone, it’s time to turn around and go back.

Avoid bringing your dog on the trails during the summer.

Choose a trail that is within your ability. Check out the trail rating system online: www.glendaleaz. com/parksandrecreation/trails. Find more pet safety information on page 28!

Boys and girls ages 7-12 can play in Glendale’s fall flag football league. Registration begins in July!

YOUTH SPORTS Glendale Parks & Recreation Office | 5970 W. Brown St. Glendale, AZ 85302

Flag Football League This recreational, but fast-paced five-on-five flag football league is for boys and girls ages 7-12. The program provides young players a fun and exciting opportunity to engage in limited contact and continuous action while learning lessons in teamwork. The league teaches the fundamentals of football offense and defensive plays, rules and sportsmanship. Games are held on Saturdays, Sept. 28 – Nov. 16 and are played at Sahuaro Ranch Park at the NE/NW multi-purpose soccer fields. Game times are usually between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Participants will receive a team shirt, up to eight games and a participation award. Age categories for all sports are based on the child’s age as of Sept. 28, 2019.

20 | SUMMER - 2019

Registration will be held July 15 – Aug. 16. Late registration is held the week of Aug. 19-23, with an additional $10 added to the registration fee. No registrations will be accepted after 5 p.m. on Aug. 23. Participants will be placed on a waiting list after the registration deadline. Practices will begin after Sept. 9, if enough volunteers have shown an interest in coaching. The volunteer coach determines the exact site, day(s) and time(s). Even if you have a busy schedule you may want to consider being a coach, since you can structure your own practice schedule. Generally, practices are held during the week in the early evening.

Volunteer coaches needed! Please indicate your desire to coach on the registration form when registering your child (does not guarantee coaching position). Those who do not have children in the league are also welcome to become a volunteer coach in our sports program. Application due by Friday, Aug 30th. Manditory coaches meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 4th. Here are the requirements and steps involved: Step 1: Must be at least 18 years of age. Step 2: Fill out a coach’s application and return it to the recreation office at the Glendale Adult Center, 5970 W. Brown St., by Friday, Aug. 30. Step 3: Attend the mandatory coaches’ meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 4. Step 4: Must be fingerprinted and background checked. Step 5: Complete the NYSCA online coaches’ training. Step 6: Adhere to the city of Glendale’s Coaches Code of Conduct and department philosophy, “The outcome of the child is more important than the outcome of the game.” Register/More information: www.glendaleaz.com/parksandrecreation

PUT A LITTLE PLAY IN A KID’S DAY B

GLENDALE’S YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND

eing a kid is defined by one very important thing: playing. Playing house, playing dress-up, playing board games, playing ball and playing tag are all important. Can you imagine childhood without many of those things? The opportunity to play sports and learning skills, like art, music and cooking, among others, is not available to all kids in Glendale, unfortunately. If the cost of sports leagues and activities is an obstacle for some families, the City of Glendale hopes to remove that barrier by providing scholarships for those who need it. Based on economic need, families can apply to receive scholarship funds for their children for activities such as those listed above, in a limited capacity for the calendar year. The account is credited so participants can register for classes or leagues through that account, when ready.

Anthony “Tony” Holly, a former Glendale police officer, was very involved in the community, volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters and coaching Little League when he was in the Air Force. He became a police officer to help people in need, and was especially grateful when he could help a child to better his or her life or to assist with getting them to a safer environment. His mother, Nancy Bonner, who runs the foundation in his honor, says “Tony loved to swim! He learned when he was very young, and got so much enjoyment from it. Being born and raised in Arizona, he was very aware of the importance of water safety and… keeping children safe around water. The best way to be safe? Know how to swim! We hope others

The donation from the Anthony Holly Foundation goes a long way in helping to make sure all children are able to play, learn, swim, paint, make music and much more; however, the division set a goal of raising $10,000 in 2017, and more donations are needed – from corporations, nonprofits, individuals and families – to help reach that goal. To donate, simply do so online at http://www.glendaleaz.com/ParksandRecreation/scholarshipprogram.cfm. Or mail a check (made out to City of Glendale Scholarship Fund), to: Glendale Parks and Recreation Department 5970 W. Brown St., Glendale, Arizona 85302

The scholarship account is dependent on fundraising and donations throughout the year. Organizations such as the Anthony Holly Foundation, based here in Glendale, have donated funds to further the cause. Their mission is to “support activities, organizations and facilities that encourage young people to live joyous and meaningful lives and to, in turn, encourage them to improve their families, their communities and their futures.” The donations that the city received from the foundation are earmarked for swim lessons for Glendale children, which helps Parks & Recreation further one of its missions—ensuring all children in Glendale learn to swim.

will join us in donating to Glendale Parks and Recreation. Recreation teaches children teamwork, helps to keep them healthy, gives them productive choices for their downtime and adds fun to their lives!”
