I am delighted to welcome you to the 2025 running of the Bahrain International Trophy, the showpiece event in our racing calendar.
Our vision for horseracing in the Kingdom of Bahrain is rooted in excellence, global connection and long-term growth. Through strategic investment, international collaboration and a commitment to the highest standards, we are shaping and developing a racing product that reflects both our ambition and our values.
The development and growth of the Bahrain International Trophy since its inception in 2019 embodies all of these objectives. As the event grows in stature, so too does its history with last year’s victor, Spirit Dancer, becoming the first dual winner of the race.
This year, the sport’s leading trainers are represented, with horses from Britain, Ireland, France, UAE and Bahrain competing in the Kingdom’s most valuable race.
To all the participants, stakeholders, and racing enthusiasts, I wish you an exciting day of racing at the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club and thank you all for your continued support.

HIS HIGHNESS
SHAIKH ISA BIN SALMAN
BIN HAMAD AL KHALIFA Chairman of the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club

The Kingdom of Bahrain has a significant race sponsorship portfolio in Europe, the purpose of which is to promote racing and business in Bahrain.
2/3

The portfolio includes the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, three races at the prestigious July Festival at Newmarket and sponsorship of one of the world’s leading jockeys, Tom Marquand.
4 The connections of Delacroix accept the winner’s trophies for the Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes from HE Iain Lindsay and Yusuf Buheji, CEO of the Bahrain Turf Club.
5 Zavateri, winner of this year’s edition of the Group 2 Kingdom of Bahrain July Stakes at Newmarket.
6 Bahrain Turf Club ambassador, Tom Marquand.
7 The trophies for the Bahrain Trophy, a race the Kingdom of Bahrain has supported since 1991.

Held in September at Leopardstown Racecourse in Ireland, The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes is ranked one of the top ten races in the world.
This year’s race was won by Delacroix, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Christophe Soumillon, with in third place Royal Champion, who runs in today’s Bahrain International Trophy.
This year’s running of the Bahrain International Trophy features horses from Britain, Ireland, France, UAE and Bahrain.

Royal Champion
With close to 130 winners in the United Kingdom and domestic earnings of £3.7million in prize money, trainer Karl Burke is having a very successful year, and he is looking forward to saddling his first runner in the Kingdom with Royal Champion
Royal Champion brings high-class European form to the race. In July the gelding won the Group 2 Sky Bet York Stakes and then in September he finished third in the Group 1 Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes. A performance that earned the 7-year-old an automatic invitation to the Bahrain International Trophy.
“His last race was as good a run as he has ever put in, finishing on the heels of Delacroix in the Irish Champion Stakes.
“He enjoys good ground, nice ground with no jar, and he is a horse who is probably at his best when fresh, as he showed with his last run. He has always worked well at home and is currently working as well as ever.”
KARL BURKE
Trainer of Royal Champion
Owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, Royal Champion has already gathered plenty of air miles having had a spell based in Australia. He returned to Europe last year, joining Karl Burke’s yard at the end of 2024.

The only 3-year-old in the line-up, Pride Of Arras is a two-time Group 2 winner having won the Dante Stakes and Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.
Pride Of Arras will be seeking to overcome a twelve-week absence; however, trainer Ralph Beckett is confident fitness will not be an issue as he prepares to saddle his first runner in the Bahrain International Trophy.
Trainer Ralph Beckett said: “Pride Of Arras is working well and he is ready to go. I think the race is a good spot for him; a mile and a quarter on good ground will suit.”
The two other contenders from the UK are the four-year-old Persica, trained by Richard Hannon, and the five-year-old Lion’s Pride, trained by John and Thady Gosden. The Gosdens have trained the runner-up in the Bahrain International Trophy on four occasions, most recently with the subsequent Group 1 winner Lead Artist, who finished second to Spirit Dancer in 2024.

Andre Fabre, like John and Thady Gosden, has been a long-time supporter of the Bahrain International Trophy and the 30-time champion trainer in France is back again this year with Bright Picture, who was last seen finishing third at ParisLongchamp in the Group 2 Prix Dollar.
The talented Galen, trained by Joseph O’Brien, will be the sole Irish representative, while the UAE will be represented by Military Order, owned by Godolphin and trained by Charlie Appleby.
Bahrain’s sole domestic runner is Calif, trained Fawzi Nass for Victorious Forever. Calif is bidding to improve on his third-place finish in last year’s race.

Racecards allow racegoers to study the form and find out more about the horses that are racing in front of them.
There are usually 7-8 races taking place on each raceday and a racecard can appear quite confusing with a whole host of numbers, letters and facts to decipher. This quick guide has everything you need to understand and read a racecard.
01 Race number | Time | Title
The number of the race. Time the race is due off. Race name usually including sponsor.
02 Course | race distance
The track the horses are running on. The distance the horses will travel from start to finish during the race displayed in meters.
03 Jockey colours
The Owners colours that the Jockey will wear aboard the horse whilst racing. Each set of colours are unique to an owner. In the event of the owner having two runners the owner will change the cap colour so the judge can distinguish between the owner’s multiple runners. In some cases they may have more than one design of colours registered.
04 Horse’s saddlecloth number
The saddle cloth number assigned to the horse for the race. This is sorted by highest weight and then assigned alphabetically if horses are due to carry the same weight for handicap ratings.
05 Weight
This is the amount of weight each horse carries including the Jockey. If the Jockey holds an apprentice licence (and they can claim in the race) the weight with the claim will be displayed in brackets.
06 Horse’s name
Name of the horse displayed in English and Arabic within the racecard.
07 Horse’s age
Age of the horse at the time of the race.
08 Form guide
The previous horses performances with details of date, distance, jockey, weight carried, race type, equipment worn i.e V for visor, placings, ratings, time, winners time, margins beaten or distance won by.
09 Stall number
The stall numbers are randomly generated by the racing administration system for all races apart from the Bahrain International Trophy where a manual stalls draw is completed. The stalls draw dictates which gate number the horse will start the race from.
10 Breeding – Sire - Dam - Damsire
Sire (the father of the horse) Dam (the mother of the horse) Damsire (the father of the dam)
11 Owner
The owner/s of the horse.
12 Jockey’s name
The rider of the horse.
13 Breeder
The person/s responsible for breeding the horse.
14 Trainer
The person responsible for the training and welfare of the horse.
Headgear is used by trainers to try and help a horse’s overall performance. Headgear is displayed in the racecard as follows:
B = blinkers | E = eye hood
EC = eye cover | ES = Eye Shield | H = Hood
HT = Hood and tongue tie | T = Tongue-tie
CP = Cheek Pieces | V = Visor

This is the horses current handicap rating for the race. On the form guide you can see previous ratings the horse has run off for its historic performances. A handicap rating is assigned to a horse by a Handicapper.

Under a floodlit desert night sky, Spirit Dancer lit up the 2024 running of the Bahrain International Trophy becoming the first dual winner of the Kingdom’s most valuable race.
The historic victory made for another special occasion for Spirit Dancer’s owner breeder, Sir Alex Ferguson, who was on-hand to welcome his winner with co-owner Ged Mason. It was also a masterful feat of training by Richard Fahey, who had nurtured the horse back after he had picked up an injury six months earlier.
The Group 2 race attracted a truly international field and produced a thrilling contest as Spirit Dancer, under jockey Oisin Orr, came with a strong run down the outside to overcome eventual runner-up Lead Artist.
For Sir Alex Ferguson, it was a memorable day. Speaking after the race, he said: “This is unbelievable. I don’t know where he got it from. And what a ride by Oisin (Orr). He must have had four lengths to make up on the leader and I’m really proud of him as he sat motionless, he did not panic.”
In second place was Lead Artist, ridden by Kieran Shoemark, the fourth time John & Thady Gosden have trained the runner-up in the Bahrain International Trophy, and in third was Calif, owned by Victorious Racing, trained by Carlos and Yann Lerner.

Spirit Dancer loves it here. You think lightning won’t strike twice but it has today. It’s wonderful for Richard Fahey and the team back home, it’s a credit to them to get the horse back after injury.

Form: On his last run finished third at ParisLongchamp in the Prix Dollar (Gr.2). As a 3-y.o he beat subsequent champion Calandagan and he has also won a Group 2. Untried on fast ground.

Form: A Group 1 winner in 2024, he finished third in this race last year and was also placed in good company in Saudi Arabia and Hong Kong. Needs to improve on two most recent runs.

Form: Ran perhaps his best race when runner-up at Royal Ascot in June over 2000m and he is set to meet similar conditions here. He also beat Gr. 1 winner Jan Bruegel in April to win a Group 3.

Form: Boasted decent form as a 3 & 4-y.o but put in an improved effort last time, winning by 7 lengths from Isle Of Jura over 2400m. Big chance if reproducing that level of form over 2000m.
