Raring2go! THINGS TO DO

7 Awesome Autumn 1. Lovely Leaves At this time of year our local parks and nature reserves are lovely places. Visit Packwood House, Baddesley Clinton, take a stroll up to Chesterton Windmill, around Burton Dassett Hills Country Park or explore some local woodland like Crackley or Hay Wood and see how much the colour of the trees has changed since Summer. Collect objects for an art project at home, kick piles of leaves or just run around and let off steam!

2. Feed the Birds If you’ve collected pine cones on your travels, turn them into a bird feeder. Just fill them with lard, squash in some bird seed, hang from a tree in and sit back and watch the birds enjoy their tasty treat.

3. Build a Den We are lucky to have lots of parks and woodland on our doorstep. Pop your wellies on and head out for a spot of den building somewhere like Kenilworth Common where you are sure to find lots of fallen branches.

4. Mud Pies and Witches Brew “Hubble, bubble, toil and trouble…” possibly the best autumn activity of all! Make a witches brew with lashings of mud, water and anything else you can find like wood chippings, leaves and bark! You could make your own mud kitchen in the corner of the garden or take a bucket along to the local park and collect ingredients there.

5. Arty Autumn Crafts It’s a great time to collect things like pine cones and leaves to use in an art project. Make a colourful collage, try leaf rubbing or make a pine-cone creature. You’ll find some great ideas under Autumn Activities in the Kids Zone on raring2go.co.uk.

6. Pumpkin Carving Create your own menacing masterpiece (with a grown up’s help!) and be ready to scare away any ghosts and ghouls. Pop along to Hatton Adventure World during Pumpkin Week and you can pick your own pumpkin first.

7. Play Conkers Collect the best conkers while you are out and about on your travels. Make a hole through the middle, thread them onto a piece of string and let battle commence!

Raring2go! BOOK REVIEWS

Book Reviews

Tiger, Tiger, Burning Bright!

Mrs Noah’s Garden

A glorious and ambitious sequel to ‘I Am the Seed That Grew the Tree’ – described by Julia Donaldson as “An absolutely beautiful book.” This lavishly illustrated gift book treasury of 366 animal poems – one for every day of the year – ranges from unforgettable classics to contemporary works from around the world, including poetry in translation. With sumptuous finishes including cloth binding, full colour illustrations and textured paper jacket the perfect gift for any child or adult to treasure.

Jackie Morris £12.99 A new story about the lovable, independent-minded and resourceful Mrs Noah. Mrs Noah won a host of admirers with Mrs Noah’s Pockets (2016). Now, with the Ark safely grounded, she gives herself a new task, to make a garden in the bare earth. The famously deep pockets hold flower and plant seeds, and with her children’s help she prepares the ground, plants and waters, until on a magical midsummer’s morning, the garden is there in full bloom. For Mr Noah, who has watched her sewing in the evenings there is a special surprise.

Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow Jessica Townsend £12.99 Discover the magical world of Nevermoor and the adventures of Morrigan Crow, in this awardwinning series for fans of Harry Potter and His Dark Materials. Morrigan Crow is determined, daring and ready for a new challenge: to step into her destiny as a Wundersmith, master the mysterious Wretched Arts, and control the power that threatens to consume her. A strange illness has taken hold of Nevermoor, turning its peaceable Wunimals into mindless, vicious unnimals. As victims of the Hollowpox multiply, panic spreads. With the city she loves in a state of fear, Morrigan quickly realises it is up to her to find a cure, even if it will put her – and the rest of Nevermoor – in more danger than ever before …

The Lost Spells Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane £14.99 A pocket-sized treasure that introduces a beautiful new set of natural spell-poems and artwork by creative duo Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. Written to be read aloud, painted in brushstrokes that call to the forest, field, riverbank and also to the heart, The Lost Spells summons back what is often lost from sight and care, and inspires protection and action on behalf of the natural world. It celebrates a sense of wonder, bearing witness to nature’s power to amaze, console and bring joy.

10

Fiona Waters £25

Classic Nursery Rhymes Jackie Morris £15 A wonderfully illustrated and sumptuous collection of nursery rhymes for all ages, including many favourite rhymes as well as some delightful discoveries. Originally published as The Cat and the Fiddle in 2011, this edition includes a new introduction by Jackie Morris - a spirited defence of the nursery rhyme, which she fears is in danger of being forgotten in a digital world. The beautiful and detailed watercolour paintings combine with over 40 rhymes to make this a unique treasury and lifetime possession for children and adults of all ages.

Rise of the Shadow Dragons Liz Flanagan £10.99 In this exciting follow up to The Dragon Daughter, Jowan wants only one thing: to have a dragon of his own. Then disaster strikes, and his world suddenly turns into a darker and more dangerous place. But a new friend and an astonishing discovery could lead him to what he has always wanted ... if he is just willing to take a leap of faith and brave the impossible. He needs to act fast though - a volcano is waking up!

Raring2go! THINGS TO DO

Alternative Gift Ideas (…experiences over Plastic!)

This year more than ever, we have all learnt to value life’s experiences over ‘material stuff’. When you can’t have those experiences, you really miss the opportunity to make new memories with your loved ones. So how about buying friends and family these alternative gifts for Christmas? It’s a great way to support our local businesses too. A Family Day Out

A family ticket or annual pass to a favourite attraction always goes down well and it gives families something to put on their 2021 calendar! We all like a day out to look forward too. Attractions like Hatton Adventure World, Compton Verney and Stratford-Upon-Avon Butterfly Farm all offer annual membership tickets that can be gifted. An annual membership for Birmingham Museums Trust gives you free entrance to all 9 of their sites including ThinkTank. Go Ape offer vouchers which can be purchased as a value or to cover a specific activity. If you would like to do something together, you could book a private chocolate making workshop with The Chocolate Shed.

Sponsor an Animal

If you sponsor a horse or donkey through Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Oxhill you receive a wonderful adoption pack which includes a certificate, photo of your new friend and their story. Dudley Zoos’ Adopt an Animal package supports vital conservation work, plus the recipient also gets a day pass to the zoo to see their adopted animal!

VIP Animal Experience

For a unique gift, that benefits the animals too, West Midland Safari Park and Cotswold Wildlife Park both offer animal encounters and Junior Keeper experiences.

12

raring2go.co.uk

Raring2go! THINGS TO DO Theatre Tickets

A trip to the theatre is always a real treat and our theatres really need our support at the moment, after a tough year. You could give tickets to a specific production but it is also worth looking at membership of theatres like the Birmingham Rep, RSC or Warwick Arts Centre that would give you a discount on tickets for a whole year. There is the added option of a meal voucher for the Rooftop Restaurant at The RSC or you could name a seat at The Birmingham Rep. It would be great to have something like that to look forward to in 2021!

Vouchers

Vouchers don’t need to just cover a shopping spree. If you purchase a voucher for somewhere like Resorts World, Birmingham or Touchwood these are redeemable against meals in their restaurants as well as fun activities such as a cinema visit or Vortex Gaming.

Lessons and Clubs

Grandparents often struggle to know what to buy youngsters these days, but they relish helping out the family. How about purchasing lessons for a club that the child has always wanted join, or a hobby they have always wanted to try? The Clubs section of the Raring2go! website is full of local information on what’s available.
