Leading scientist joins Immunotec’s corporate team Immunotec President, Chuck Roberts, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Wulf Dröge as Immunotec Research’s Senior Vice-President, Research and Development. Dr. Dröge comes to Immunotec from his position as Professor, Faculty of Biology at the University of Heidelberg and Chair of the Department of Immunochem, Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum. A leading scientist worldwide, Dr. Dröge heads Immunotec’s Medical Advisory Board, spearheading its initiatives in the areas of immune system optimization and anti-aging. As Adjunct Professor at McGill University, he will also lead Immunotec’s joint research projects with McGill. Of all the places to be and areas of research to focus on, here is what the newly-appointed V.P., Dr. Dröge had to say about coming to Immunotec. Gabriel Filippi stands atop the world and waves the Immunotec Flag! With a crafted plan for this challenging feat, Gabriel Filippi arrived in the Himalayas on April 1st and on Monday, May 30th, 2005, finally attained the Mount Everest summit; making him the first Immunotec customer to peak Everest… with Immunocal/HMS 90. Although in excellent shape, Gabriel did not bypass physical and mental preparation for the climb. His training regimen included daily cardiovascular and weight training workouts, Martial Arts, and visualization. Also prior to his departure, and at the advice of John Molson, Immunotec’s V.P. of Research & Development, Gabriel had begun a supplementation regimen of four packs (40 grams) of Immunocal/HMS 90 per day. In addition to Immunocal/HMS 90, Gabriel’s travel companion was a 60 lb backpack that contained food, a down snow suit and mittens, climbing boots, ropes, climbing gear, and an emergency medical kit. The first step was a hike through the villages - a climb from 2,600 to 5,300 meters, where Base Camp is located. Then Gabriel trekked up and down, between Base Camp and Camp III; six times before his final takeoff for the summit. It is the only way to properly acclimatize; giving the body time and rest to adjust to high altitude climates. Gabriel endured cold temperatures, winds gusting up to 60 mph, deadly crevasses, and reduced visibility due to blowing snow and reflections of the sun. There are also dangerous differences in barometric pressure, air quality, and oxygen levels. The higher the altitude, the thinner the air; this means fewer oxygen molecules per breath. A climber will experience faster breathing and shortness of breath, and any physical movement becomes an ultimate challenge. According to Gabriel, “a climber can take one step, and have to inhale/exhale about sixty times before he can attempt a second step.” To stay on track, Gabriel’s every step was calculated; climbing slowly and trekking his planned route. After the “practice” climbs, it was finally show time! Gabriel descended back to Base Camp for a final rest and awaited

Camp II: At 6,400 meters, this area is flat and relatively well protected. Camp III: At 7,100 meters, this area is referred to as the “dead zone”! Camp IV: At 8,000 meters, this is what Gabriel calls “the area where no man should be… also the point where most climbers will require oxygen.”

favorable weather conditions. “The body remembers altitude changes and remains acclimatized”, he says. Once fully rested, he headed for the summit. Within two days, he had reached Camp III; then Camp IV the following day where he took a brief rest and finally began the toughest stretch - the last 850 meters to the top. By 10 a.m. on Monday, May the 30th, he stood atop Everest’s summit! The most vital commodities past Camp IV are water and oxygen. Although climbers do not experience hunger at this height, weight-loss is at its peak as a climber expends about 7,000 calories a day. Gabriel’s initial plan was to forgo the oxygen, but circumstances made that impossible past the “dead zone” of 8,000 feet. Gabriel’s goal was accomplished, but not quite as planned. He heroically saved a woman’s life and helped climbers through a storm that hit Base Camp. But a devastatingly unforeseen event also occured; the loss (due to pulmonary complications) of his longtime friend and climbing buddy, Sean Egan. Through it all, Gabriel maintained his physical strength, his mental focus, and accomplished his lifelong goal! We congratulate him on his victorious climb and heroism, and salute him for incorporating Immunocal/HMS 90 into the regime that took him to the top of the world!
