Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society We in the R & R have celebrated 80 years of unbroken presentations on the Dublin stage and one thing which has remained unchanged over the years, however, is the continued affection for the R & R which became everyone’s favourite back in the nineteen hundreds and still remains way out in front eighty years later.

Now in the spring of 1994, we trust our audiences will perm it us to entertain and involve them in the continuation of our success.

For many o f us music is the highlight o f our lives and looking back over the last 50 years in particular, we have seen extraordinary changes and m uch development in entertainment due to radio and television. Gp to then all m usic came from opera, classical and popular sources. We in the R & R concentrated on Gilbert & Sullivan and many of the newer current musical comedies of the more distinguished of which were The Student Prince, Bitter Sweet, D ancin g Years, O klahom a and South Pacific, with Irish premieres of The Merry Widow, M y Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof and Gigi.

Over the years we have presented many young artists who have played leading roles, going on to achieve further success, and to this we men­ tion the strength of our Chorus which adds so m uch to our spectacular presentations with full sets, costumes and orchestra.

This evening we present to you selections from many well loved musi­ cals, old and new, and we hope to bring you many magical moments well into the future.

In a quotation from Ruddigore by W. S. Gilbert, my last word is; “Hush! They sing choruses in public That’s mad enough I think.”

Since its foundation in 1821 the National Children’s Hospital has cared for children from all over the country. Today it continues that tradition as well as providing Paediatric Training for nurses and doctors.

However, current restrictions on public expenditure m ean that we must m eet all but our m ost basic needs from our own resources.

We are therefore grateful to the Rathmines and Rathgar Musical Society for giving us this night of Hear Our Songs.

RAY BARROR Ray Barror, a member of one of the best known families in Dublin’s musical scene, is a regular performer with the R&R. Ray’s career has embraced revue, pantomime and musicals. He has played in a variety of productions including Cinderella and Aladdin at the Olympia Theatre, summer seasons at Butlins and leading parts in The New Moon, Oklahoma, The Boyfriend, Sw eet Charity and A nnie Get Your Gun to name but a few.

He has also appeared with the Glasnevin Musical Soci­ ety in the NCH and took part in the John McCormack tribute Loue Song at the NCH and the Braemor Rooms.

One of his most enjoyable roles has been that of ^'eorge M with the Guinness Variety Group.

ANNE BGCKLEY Anne Buckley studied drama and singing at the College of Music and Leinster School of Music in Dublin.

She joined the RTE Chamber Choir in 1986 where she recorded weekly for radio and television.

Winner of many awards and scholarships she has sung with many choral societies in Ireland, Britain and Italy, Her acting roles include Penny in a Slice o f Saturday Night, Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show, 1st Fairy in A M idsumm er Night’s Dream and Angie in B illy’s Christmas Box. She has appeared on RTE Television on a number of occasions as well as BBC and Channel 4.

In September 1992 Annie sang with the RTECO in Theatre Nights at the NCH. She has performed extensively in cabaret and has worked with numerous bands, most recently in Eurosong '94.

PATRICK CAMPBELL Pat Campbell is now entering his 50th year in the R&R. He is recognised for playing the comic roles in the Gilbert & Sullivan operas, character parts in a variety of musicals and as compere for the Society’s concerts and social events.

Pat has served for many years on committees and was General Secretary of the R&R from 1974-1986.

In 1988 he was a recipient of a Millennium Award presented by the Lord Mayor of Dublin ‘for outstanding achievement in light music’.

In Hear Our Songs he is the Presenter and Director of Production.

JACKIE CGRRAN OLOHAN Jackie Curran Olohan, C liorus Master, makes iier debut this season with the R & R. She is the daughter of Josephine Scanlan and Chris Curran and has distinguished herself as a performer, musician, music director and chorus master with many leading societies in Ireland. She teaches music in Our Lady’s School, Rathnew.

She has also been music director with D.A.Y.M.S. and won the award as Best Music Director at the Waterford Light Festival of Music for her work on Sondheim 's Into the Woods.

She has performed as soloist in many A.I.M.S. concerts, as backing vocalist for RTE and with leading artists on album s and CDs. Her TV appearances include Kenny Liue and Eurosong ’94. She and her husband Sean have written and performed many o f their own works in their group Auoca.

Qearoid studied m usic with the late Dr. J. O ’Reilly in the College o f Music and graduated with a B.Mus. from GCD. Subsequently, he studied conducting with, am ong others, George Hurst in London. Since then he has worked as conductor, m usic director and arranger for m ost Irish theatrical companies in works ranging from Mozart to Sondheim.

At present, he is resident conductor with the R & R. Qearoid has appeared as guest conductor with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, O ur Lady’s Choral Society and both National Symphony and Concert orchestras.

EMER HARTNETT A Graduate of Music from University College Cork, she trained at the London Academy o f Music and Dramatic Art and Cork School o f Music.

Her theatre roles began when she first appeared in Cork at the age of thirteen in the title role in A lice in W onderland in the Everyman Theatre. Other credits in­ clude the title role in Agnes o f God for which she won best newcomer in the Cork Critics’ Awards, Thunder Up the G ully and Once a Catholic, both in the Everyman Theatre.

Previous shows in the Cork Opera House include Munsense, Camelot, Loue from Judy, Babes in the Wood and S um m er Revels. And in the Cork Arts and Theatre Club, M an o f La Mancha.

Em er m oved to Dublin to further her singing career with Dr. Veronica Dunne in the Leinster School of Music and is a mem ber of the RTE Chamber Choir.

F orthcom ing productions include Tuptim in The K in g a n d I and Nancy in the musical premiere o f Sileis M arner in the Rupert Guinness Theatre, Dublin.

DEIRDRE HODGINS Deirdre studied piano and voice for several years under Oliver O ’Brien, Carysfort College, and with Philip Gilbert and Evelyn Dowling, College o f Music. She also studied for D iplom a in Drama Studies at the Brendan Smith Theatre Academy.

She has appeared with the Tivoli Lyric Players in The Pirates o f Penzance, the DGOS in Turandot, Orfeo ed Euridice, La Bohem e and The Pearl Fishers.

For the R & R she appeared in The Magic o f Lerner and Lowe, Fiddler on the Roof, played the role o f Ermengarde in H ello D olly and A S ong for You at the NCH.

RITA KEALY Rita was born in Dublin and commenced her dance career at the very early age o f four when appearing at the Theatre Royal in R obinson Crusoe with Noel Purcell.

Rita subsequently became a Royalette and trained un­ der Alice Dalgarno. She has worked on many film s and on television.

Rita has choreographed for many o f the Dublin musical societies and has won many awards for her work, includ­ ing Best Choreographer at Waterford International Festi­ val of Light Opera on four separate occasions for A nnie Get Your Gun, Guys a n d Dolls, Mac a n d Mabel, all with SMDS and George M with Guinness Musical Society.

She has also been awarded Best Choreographer with AIMS and Tops of the Town.

She has choreographed Anglo Irish Banks in 1989 Tops national final and is currently choreographer to Irish Distillers Tops, which won the Dublin and NationalFinals in 1991.

She has both staged and choreographed previous productions with the R & R. Her next production will be The K ing and I, in Cork.

PAMELA KEELEY Pamela Keeley started her stage training at the Billie Barry Stage School at the early age of four. Her first professional appearance was in the Gaiety panto M other Goose. Since then she has appeared regularly in panto and also took part in Bugsy M alone and Gypsy.

In 1991 and 1992 she won the Best Female Comedi­ enne award at the W aterford International Festival of Light Opera for roles played in A n y th in g Goes and Into the Woods, both directed by Brian Merriman. She has also appeared in cabaret at the Braem or Rooms, Hollybrook Hotel and Mosney.

PAGL KELLY Paul Kelly was born in Dublin and studied singing with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the College of Music. He has won many prizes for his singing including the John McCormack Cup at the Feis Ceoil and appears regularly at the National Concert Hall and on RTE Television and Radio. Equally at home on the concert platform and the stage, he has appeared in leading roles in operas by Mozart, Smetana and Poulenc as well as in oratorio. He has also appeared with Wexford Festival Opera and at the Waterford Festival of Light Opera where he won an award for Best Male Voice. His recent productions include the role o f Fairfax in The Yeomen o f the Guard with the R & R at the Gaiety, as Nanki-Poo in the NCH and as Ravenal in the College of Music's production of S ho w Boat.

MARGARET KILLIAN Margaret Killian is currently studying in the Leinster Opera Studio under Evelyn Dowling and David Wray.

Her stage work includes the Yeats Festival's production of The H o u r Glass in the Peacock Theatre, Sondheim's /4 Little N ig h t M usic and Menotti's A m a h l and the N ig h t Visitors in the National Concert Hall.

Her oratorio work includes Haydn’s Mass in Time o f War, Vivaldi's Gloria, Mozart's Mass in C and Mozart's Requiem performed in Trinity College Dublin and Belfast.

She is currently a m em ber of the RTE Chamber Choir, and recently recorded tracks from Bill Whelan's The Lost Kingdom.

W orking with the Opera Studio she has travelled throughout Ireland with various operat­ ic scenes including Mozart's Die Zauberfiote. Other plans include Handel’s Beishazzer and Mozart’s The M arriage o f Figaro.

GARRY MOUNTAINE Garry has appeared with musical societies in Dublin and throughout the country playing roles as diverse as Finch in H ow to Succeed in Business and Tevye in Fiddler on the R oof He is a member o f the Cloud Nine Theatre Group.

Productions include Nicholas N ickelby and Plaza Suite.

Awards include AIMS/ILBS Award for Best Actor, Best Male Singer, Best Overall Performance.

Garry is at present studying with Dr. Veronica Dunne at the L.S.M, He appeared in the 1992 season with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company playing Pooh-Bah and Shadbold in their productions of The M ikado (as seen on BBC TV) and Yeomen o f the Guard (which was recorded for T.E.R. E.M.l.) at Sadlers Wells and The Alexandra, Birmingham.

Previous roles include Figaro in both The Marriage o f Figaro and The Barber o f Seville and The Baritone in M a h a go n y Songspiel with O.T.C.

HAZEL YEOMANS Hazel Yeomans started her stage career in the old Theatre Royal at the age of three and during the following years she played the Royal, the Queens and the Olympia with such well-known variety artists as Noel Purcell, Cecil Sheridan and Danny Cummins.

In her teens she joined Jim m y O’Dea and his company at the Gaiety Theatre for the Christmas pantomimes and August revues, which she played for a number of years.

During this tim e she also became a m em ber of the R & R and starred in S h o w Boat, Oklahoma, A nn ie Get Your Gun. Love from Ju dy and numerous Gilbert & Sullivan productions. She also had a television and radio series with RTE and played with Ray McAnally and Milo O ’Shea as the lead in the m usical Carrie.

Hazel later moved to London and continued her musical career there, appearing on ITV and LWT television and succeeded Barbra Streisand in the title role in F u n n y Girl at the Prince o f Wales Theatre.

She then became involved in the world of film s and travelled to various countries with her late husband, the international film director, Peter Collinson, recording songs and voice-overs for foreign movies. She continued this work on her return to London where she now lives.

Hazel made a welcome return to the R & R for the starring role in Hello D o lly and we are delighted to have her joining us once more.
