What Are They? Why Are They Important?

2010-2011 Catalog

On June 2, 2010, after two years of research and collaboration, content experts, states, teachers, school administrators, and parents across the nation were guided by the Council of Chief State School Offices (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association, to publish the new Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics. Also supporting these standards are the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association. The goal for these Common Core Standards is to “establish clear and consistent goals for learning that will prepare America’s children for success in college and work.”

• Clear, understandable consistent;

Collaboration

Collaboration is defined as: A process in which two or more people or organizations work together in an intersection of common goals.

In schools, it is beneficial for administrators and teachers to collaborate with each other to create customized solutions for classroom instruction. Collaborating with a publisher provides educators the ability to create their own programs or materials based on their own needs. RALLY! believes in collaboration in order to meet the specific needs of a district or school. RALLY! has collaborated with many school systems to develop district/school-specific programs. Palm Pointe Educational Research School, FL

Students at Palm Pointe Educational Research School, a partner with Florida Atlantic University, used RALLY!’s internet-based programs (Reading Tracker Online and Essential Skills Online: Reading) for ongoing assessment and reading instruction. Teachers and administrators collaborated with RALLY! to establish the program and the use of data to target instruction. The program enabled teachers to pinpoint student needs and differentiate classroom instruction.

Working in collaboration with RALLY! Education, key district personnel created a customized solution focusing on a systematic approach using online benchmark assessments, immediate online scoring and reporting, targeted instruction, and professional development. The Atlantic City Digging Deeper Literacy Program was developed specifically to address the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards. The customized materials matched the skills assessed on the NJ ASK (state assessment test). The results: For the first time in more than 15 years, the Atlantic City School District has been designated a “high performing district” by the NJ Department of Education. • Informed by other top performing countries , so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society; and • Evidence-based. The Common Core Standards are comprised of two components. One is the K-12 standards which addresses what students should know and be able to do through high school. The second component is the college and career readiness standards which address what students are expected to have learned when they graduate from high school. The incentive for adopting these new Common Core Standards is high. As one example, the federal government included adoption of these standards as one of the four pillars of the $435 billion dollar “Race to the Top” government initiative. When you weigh yourself each day, you are using a “vertical scale.”

Online Assessment

When you measure your child’s height and mark it on the wall, you are using a “vertical scale.” When you ask for the

temperature outside, you are using a “vertical scale.”

What is a Vertical Scale? A vertical scale is a simple concept that we use every time we measure height, weight, distance, volume, etc. Quite simply, a vertical scale means that we have a

consistent way to label characteristics regardless of how small or large they are. We can measure a child’s height from birth to high school graduation and we always use the same scale. In the United States we typically use inches and feet. By using this consistent scale, we can compare growth in height over time with

accuracy in a way everyone understands. We do the same with weight in ounces, pounds, and tons.

Why is Vertical Scale Important? In measuring student learning, however, not every test offers this same accurate and consistent way to track student

learning over time and up the grades. The only way to monitor progress over time and across grades with accuracy and meaning is to have a vertical scale for the test that spans the grades. Think of this vertical scale as a measuring tape for achievement. The power of a vertical scale is that scores can be compared directly to

other scores just like growth in inches or pounds can be compared directly to other height and weight observations.

Interactive whiteboards have revolutionized the way teachers educate students in the classroom! This new interactive educational tool is comprised of a large “whiteboard” display that connects to a computer and projector. Teachers can navigate their instructional lessons using the computer with a pen or other device while the lesson is projected onto the whiteboard. With the wide variety of teaching benefits, interactive whiteboards have made the classic

Is Academic Vocabulary Just New Jargon or Is It Really Important for Student Success?

!

It's all about words!

In order for students to understand math or science (or any subject, for that matter), they need to know what the words mean. The challenge for math and science students is that they are expected to understand the meaning of words that are sometimes above their grade level.

These curriculum content words are called “academic vocabulary” – the technical language associated with a specific content area.

Academic vocabulary refers to those words and their meanings that are directly included in instruction for specific content areas. Subject specific terminology includes math words like

monomial, exponents, and science words like fission, plate tectonics, electricity, and circuits. But academic vocabulary also includes words that may have different meanings in reading and in general conversation than they have in a specific subject area. For example, the word “predict” is generally considered a

11

grade 7 word relative to reading. However, primary grade students are asked to “predict” in mathematics and science. Students who do not understand the academic definitions of words find learning the mathematics or science concepts very difficult. To view online and see more articles: www.RALLYEDUCATION.com/article

RALLY! Words is an online instructional tool focusing on essential math and science vocabulary words. Using instructional activities students learn word meaning, and receive instant feedback for understanding. • Focuses on academic vocabulary for mathematics and science strands.

ELL/Reading Comprehension

!

For English Language Learners (ELLs), vocabulary development is a critical component in a students journey to read and comprehend texts.

Students learning to read in their first language typically have a listening vocabulary of approximately 5000-7000 words, even before they begin formal reading in school. Experts generally believe that for extensive, content-area reading, students should be able to comprehend a minimum of 3000-5000 words. For ELL students, their vocabulary is usually much lower. In order for ELLs to keep up with their peers in all subjects, vocabulary knowledge and reinforcement is key.

A few methods for teaching and reinforcing vocabulary for ELLs include:

• Using the word in context • Showing the word with images • Teaching different uses or definitions of the word • Using Word Walls (or another method) that allows students to track their progress • Using the student’s first language when necessary to clarify a concept Focused, specific teaching strategies have been proven to help ELLs with their vocabulary development.

Effective After-School Programs 14

After-School Programs

!

After-School & Summer School

After-school learning can provide extensive instructional programs specifically intended to support student academic growth.

During the school year, millions of children are left alone and unsupervised. (Department of Education, 2002). For many of these children, after-school programs offer one of the only opportunities for academically at-risk students to get the incremental assistance they need to get back on track at their grade level. What Types of After-School Programs are Recognized?

Many disadvantaged students in urban and rural environments lack the day-to-day experiences that stimulate their intellectual development. After-school opportunities have positive effects on academic success, social behavior, and provide opportunities for enrichment for at-risk students.

Practice tests allow the student to see how questions are worded and respond to long reading passages or lengthy math problems. They let students experience all of the nuances of the actual test and receive a score that only the student and teacher will see. The teacher, upon analysis, can then target instruction based on student needs. In addition to analyzing skill needs, practice tests can be used as instructional vehicles for the teacher to guide the student through the reading comprehension or math problem-solving process. Parental Involvement

Parental Involvement Is Important for High Student Achievement!

!

Joyce Epstein of Johns Hopkins University has developed a framework for defining six different types of parent involvement. This framework can assist educators in developing school and family partnership programs. "There are many reasons for developing school, family, and community partnerships," she writes. "The main reason…is to help all youngsters succeed in school and in later life." Epstein's framework defines six types of involvement. Her work also describes the challenges inherent in fostering each type of parent involvement as well as the expected results of implementing them for students, parents, and teachers.

Parental Involvement

When schools encourage students to practice reading at home with parents, students can make significant gains in reading achievement compared to those who only practice at school. Parents who read to their children and have books available, take trips, guide TV watching, and provide stimulating experiences can also contribute significantly to student achievement. With guidance and support, parents can become increasingly involved in home learning and provide opportunities to teach and guide their children.

extract meaning from what they are reading. Students read for many reasons. They read for entertainment, for information, or because they have to complete an assignment. But in each instance and for each purpose, if the student does not comprehend what words mean, then he cannot enjoy or act upon what has been read

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand the meaning of what you read.

Reading Comprehension

There are two elements in reading comprehension: vocabulary knowledge and text comprehension. in order to understand text the reader must be able to comprehend the vocabulary.

Demonstration of reading comprehension requires that students: • Use the vocabulary meaning

Without comprehension, students cannot

Reading Comprehension is the Key

Reading Comprehension

!

• Focus on Maximizing Student Participation

“It clearly matters how reading is taught.”

• Giving Students Effective Strategies for Comprehension

Students in today’s world must be able to understand many types of written text. Reading comprehension also becomes the foundation for learning everything else.

The focus of instruction has turned away from phonics, even though it is a large part of the curriculum for beginning readers. “It clearly matters a great deal how reading is taught, and an emphasis on phonics may be necessary but it is not sufficient to ensure meaningful reading gains” (Slavin, et al).

Qualities of programs that have proven effective for beginning readers include:

Reading comprehension is important during every level of a student’s academic career. Building a strong foundation from the start helps to begin the path of reading to learn, and reading for enjoyment.

(Slavin, et al, “Effective Beginning Reading Programs: A Best-Evidence Synthesis”) • Cooperative Learning in Which Students Work in Small Groups • Professional Development in Classroom Strategies

The data was based on 73, 249 students living in 27 countries. The study also showed how a library in the home affected children in different countries. In China, it showed their

RALLY! Education and the New Common Core Standards

!

The following is taken from the Key Design Considerations for the College & Career Readiness (CCR) standards and the grade-specific standards.

The College & Career Readiness (CCR) standards anchor the Common Core Standards (CCS) document and define general, cross-disciplinary literacy expectations that must be met for students to be prepared to enter college and workforce training programs ready to succeed. The K–12 grade-specific standards define end-of-year expectations and a cumulative progression designed to enable students to meet college and career readiness expectations no later than the end of high school. Students advancing through the grades are expected to meet each year’s grade specific standards, retain or further develop skills and understandings mastered in preceding grades, and work steadily toward meeting the more general expectations described by the CCR standards.

Grade levels for K–8; grade bands for 9–10 and 11–12 The Common Core Standards use individual grade levels in kindergarten through grade 8 to provide useful specificity; the Standards use two-year bands in grades 9–12 to allow schools, districts, and states flexibility in high school course design. A focus on results rather than means

By emphasizing required achievements, the Standards leave room for teachers, curriculum developers, and states to determine how those goals should be reached and what additional topics should be addressed. Thus, the Standards do not mandate such things as a particular writing process or the full range of metacognitive strategies that students may need to monitor and direct their thinking and learning. Teachers are thus free to provide students with the tools and knowledge their professional judgment and experience identify as most helpful.

An integrated model of literacy Although the Standards are divided into Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language strands for conceptual clarity, the processes of communication are closely connected, as reflected throughout this document.

Research and media skills blended into the Standards as a whole To be ready for college, workforce training, and life in a technological society, students need the ability to gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report on information and ideas, to conduct original research in order to answer questions or solve problems, and to analyze and create a high volume and extensive range of print and nonprint texts in media forms old and new. The need to conduct research and to produce and consume media is embedded into every aspect of today’s curriculum. Research and media skills and understandings are embedded

throughout the Standards rather than treated in a separate section. Shared responsibility for students’ literacy development

The Standards insist that instruction in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language be a shared responsibility within the school. The K–5 standards include expectations for reading, writing, speaking, listening, and language applicable to a range of subjects. The grades 6–12 standards are divided into two sections, one for ELA and the other for history/social studies, science, and technical subjects. This division reflects the unique, time-honored place of ELA teachers in developing students’ literacy skills while at the same time recognizing that teachers in other areas must have a role in this development as well. RALLY Education has aligned all of it’s materials and skills with the Common Core Standards. For additional information: www.CoreStandards.org .

The Student Success Learning Pyramid

Assessment

Student success is the result of the integration of Standards-Based Assessment, Differentiated Instruction, and Test Preparation.

Assessment:

Know what your students know and what they need to know.

Test Preparation/Test Wiseness:

Instruction Practice

Ongoing assessment to monitor progress and evaluate mastery.

Knowing how a test measures learning. Students should be evaluated fairly, their scores should not be affected by the format, style, or content of the test. Evaluation should be based on what the student has learned.

State Standards

Instruction/Practice:

Know what needs to be taught and how to teach it.

State Standards & Common Core Standards: What should be taught and why.

Targeted instruction that includes learning, practice, & review using modeled, guided, and independent instruction.
