Sprucing up for Spring!

S

pringtime in the Triangle is nothing short of an explosion of color. Spring fever is contiguous and it’s hard to avoid when the tulips and dogwoods begin to pop open in the local gardens around the area. The soil needs to warm up, so take this time to plan. Sharpen your lawn mower blades, and prepare landscape beds and mulch. Fertilizers take a little time to activate in the soil, so now is the time to use shrub and summer perennial fertilizers. (Wait to fertilize spring blooming shrubs until after they have bloomed.) The last frost date is April 15, so wait until after the first week of April and watch the 10-day forecast before planting annuals and summer vegetables. Every garden needs a check up from time to time; start with getting a soil sample. It’s Free and Easy to do. Instructions are available from the Durham Cooperative Extension Office website. If you have additional questions call the Master Gardener hotline at 919.560.0528. They are available weekdays to answer your gardening questions. If you have an opportunity to check out the Extension Office, you can pick up a Moby Rain Barrel. Supply is limited, so get your barrels early. Compost bins are also available. What to do with those undesirable plants in your landscape that are affectionately referred to as “weeds”? Your Liz Dean options are cultural, mechanical and chemical. It’s important to (919) 451-3696 keep the seed heads from forming, so hand weeding or weed lizdean@pscp.com eating can be useful in controlling future seed population. Herbicides can be used, but you do need to understand how they work. Pre-emergents suppress seed germination; therefore timing the application is important. In the spring the time between the forsythias and the dogwoods blooming is ideal to put out these types of product. If you miss that window, your next option is post-emergences which typically are applied by spraying. We have all heard of Round-up. It is a non selective herbicide and it will kill most things that are green. It is highly effective when used properly. One of my favorite weed control methods is Mulch. It’s the trim paint of your landscape. It is a wonderful contrast to a green and blooming landscape. You want to do this as early as possible and avoid application on days then the temperatures are above the mid 80’s. Bulk mulch is decomposing and the added heat can defoliate plants during the application process, if added care is not taken. Mulch acts as an insulator. In the summer your plants will have warm tops and cool toes and in the winter…cool tops and warm toes. Mulch is essential to reducing evaporation and retaining water. I used to tell my kids “You’re not dirty enough…get back out there and come back when you have dirt under your nails”! Working in the yard is a great way to burn stress and get some exercise at the same time. Have FUN! And- Call me if you need a real estate agent that knows the best dirt around the Triangle!
