India polio-free?

Dont try this at work

No case since Jan 13

115 children - aged below five years - who came into the country from Pakistan with the bivalent polio vaccine.

Rapid response teams trained by the Centre will carry out “active case searching operation” in Amritsar and blocks near the border from next week.

I

ndia has not reported a single polio case in over 200 days. The country’s only polio case reported this year was on January 13 from West Bengal. India has been alert to any sort of import of the virus from neighbouring countries too.

Pakistan is reeling under a polio outbreak (over 100 cases) following the transmission of the P1 strain, and is the only Asian country this year to have reported the P3 virus, which is on the verge of elimination elsewhere on the continent.

The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) says 11 countries are facing outbreaks owing to the import of the polio virus.

A cautious New Delhi has intensified surveillance at the Indo-Pak border in Wagah to prevent the import of the virus. In the past one month, India vaccinated

Punjab’s immunization officer, Dr Balwinder Singh, told TOI :”We will visit hospitals in blocks near the border to confirm that we haven’t missed a single case of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) to spot any signs of polio being imported. Information boards at Wagah and Attari in three languages - English, Hindi and Urdu - are asking all those coming from Pakistan to immediately contact the health booth if their children aged below five years feel sudden weakness in any part of the body or have been feeling it over the past six months.” GPEI says of the 1,002 cases reported in the last 12 months globally, only 290 were reported in the last six months, showing a substantial slowdown in polio transmission. There has been an almost 40% decrease in cases this year (429) as compared to last year (706). Three out of the four endemic countries and two out of the three re-established transmission nations have seen a spurt in cases this year. Indian immunization officers are administering the vaccine to children who arrived either at the Wagah border or at the Attari railway station since September 13.

Unable to secure a job at a jewellery manufacturing unit in Dahisar East, an artisan assaulted the manager and an employee of the worskshop on Tuesday morning. According to the police, the manager, Ambarish Soni (37), and the employee, Moin Shaikh (19), were stabbed with an instrument used to cut gold and have been admitted to Nanavati Hospital. Officials said Soni, who is the brother-in-law of the workshop owner, is critical. The accused, identified only as Munna, is not traceable. The incident occurred around 10.40 am on Tuesday. The workshop is located at Chunabhatti area of Dahisar. asThere has been a job crisis in the jewellery-manufacturing industry. “Munna used to come to the workshop frequently looking for a job, but he wasnat hired,” an official said. On Monday, Soni instructed his employees to call him up the next morning, before reporting for work, as their stock of gold had dried up. Accordingly, Shaikh called up Soni and came for work when the manager gave his assent. Munna walked in a few minutes before the owner of the workshop was to arrive. Soni and Shaikh were having a discussion about work. “Munna had an altercation with the manager, over not being hired. Suddenly, he picked up snipes, used for cutting gold, and stabbed the duo with it,” said assistant commissioner Sunil Deshmukh. While Shaikh and Soni were bleeding profusely, Munna left the workshop. Soni was later admitted to the ICCU. “It took us a while to uncover the identity of the culprit. A case of a?attempt to murdera has been registered against him. tnn and our teams are looking for Munna,” said Deshmukh, adding that nothing was stolen from the workshop prima facie.

Dawood’s right hand, Iqbal Mirchi, held in London

UK forces storm hijacked Italian ship, free crew including Indians

between Dubai and London.

He was earlier detained in London but the UK authorities had turned down India’s request for his extradition at that point of time. However, this time, the sources said, they were hopeful of making a headway with more evidence against him that will be provided by the Mumbai police.

Dawood Ibrahim

T

op Dawood Ibrahim aide, Iqbal Mirchi, has been arrested in London, according to CBI. Iqbal Mirchi is an accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case and was declared a proclaimed offender by the government in 1994. He is known to handle Dawood’s drug trade. There was an Interpol notice pending against him. Iqbal Mirchi had fled India in 1995. CBI sources said they would approach the UK police through the Interpol and

diplomatic channels to seek his extradition or deportation to India. Iqbal Mirchi began his career in the underworld as a smuggler and became a big player in drug peddling around mid1980s. A consignment of over 80 lakh Mandrax tablets dispatched by him was seized. He acquired the moniker, Mirchi, from his family’s traditional business in red chilli powder. Most of his wealth has found its way into real estate. After his escape from Mumbai, he is alleged to have been dividing his time

In a dramatic raid, British special forces stormed an Italian cargo ship and freed 23 crew members including six Indians that was hijacked by Somali pirates on Monday. The raid was confirmed by Italian defence ministry spokesman. The 11 pirates who hijacked the Montecristo have all been arrested, Italian news agency ANSA said quoting sources. However, more details of the raid is awaited. The ship had a 23-member crew, including six Indians besides those from Italy and Ukraine. The 56,000-tonne bulk carrier ‘Montecristo’ was hijacked 620 miles off Somalia on Monday by five pirates in a small boat, according to the owners. According to the Italian-based firm which manages the ship, Dalmare Spa, the vessel was carrying a consignment of iron materials. The Italian defence minister said the crew aboard the D’Alessio Group-owned cargo ship were doing well. The ship had set off from the port of Liverpool and was understood to be en route to Vietnam. Media reports said that as soon as the Italian ship left the escort of a Japanese naval vessel and entered the Indian Ocean it came under attack from the pirates.

South African model, who frequented highend social parties in the city, was arrested for allegedly buying cocaine from a Nigerian drug dealer. The narcotics wing of the crime branch nabbed the 20-year-old woman, identified as Cherry Samson, from the Aurobindo Marg area on Tuesday evening when she was buying the drugs from one Cedrick Kanyeba alias JJ (26). JJ has also been arrested.

Cops seized 15gm of fine quality cocaine, which is estimated to be worth over Rs 15 lakh in the international market, said DCP (crime) Ashok Chand. Police said both the accused had come to India on valid visas which had still not expired. While JJ had a business visa and came to India as a garment trader, Cherry arrived a few months ago on a work permit and took up a job in a VIP lounge at a five-star hotel.

Stranded TASMAC students,Including Indians, have 60 days to leave UK? I

providers with a proven track record in immigration compliance will be licensed to bring international students to the UK. In the event that a student is already in the UK and his or her sponsor surrenders its licence or has its licence withdrawn, the student will usually have 60 days to find an alternative education provider in the UK.”

According to Vikram Singh, a student who paid for an MBA from the University of Wales and studying in TASMAC London, “Though the school authorities have been claiming that we will be transferred to different colleges, nothing is likely to happen. The authorities are simply buying time.”

t has been two days since TASMAC London School of Business announced the closure of its London campus, affecting around 550 students of Asian and African origin, many among whom are Indians.

However, Sameer Dua, joint MD, TASMAC and TASMAC LONDON, stresses that not only TASMAC but also a host of other private education providers have been forced to close down owing to the tightening of visa regulations by the UKBA. He said that TASMAC and the University of Wales are trying to ensure that students can continue their studies. “The University of Wales is seeking partner colleges where the transfer of credits can be done so that affected students can complete their degrees,” said Dua.

Singh, along with the other TASMAC students, have 60 days - according to the UKBA ( United Kingdom Border Agency) policy - to decide on their future. Either they get themselves admitted to a new college, fulfilling the visa requirements, or else, they leave the country. Elaborating on the situation, a UK Border Agency spokesperson in India said: “Earlier this year, we announced that from April 2012 all institutions wanting to sponsor foreign students would have to be classed as a Highly Trusted Sponsor by the UK Border Agency

and would need to be inspected by an approved educational oversight body by the end of 2012. TASMAC London School of Business has indicated that it no longer wishes

to sponsor foreign students to enter the UK and that it wishes to surrender its licence to do so.”

The spokesperson added, “These changes to accreditation and inspection requirements protect legitimate students and ensure that only those education

Can fat tax on Verdict on general power of attorney unhealthy foodstuff seen hitting property sales curb obesity?

E

xperts analyzing Tuesday’s Supreme Court order barring the sale of properties through general power of attorney (GPA) and sale agreements (SA) said the ruling could reduce black money component in deals and bring down legal disputes. However, they added that it would hit liquidity in the real estate market, bringing down the number of transactions in the short term.

A

“fat tax” unhealthy expensive India in its battle bulge.

that makes foods more could help against the

Being implemented by Denmark and Hungary with other big nations like the US and the UK considering following suit, the tax aims to curb the growing obesity rate. Though many experts think that the tax could help tackle obesity, others feel that enhancing awareness about correct diet and exercise among the people could be a better strategy. Excess bodyweight is an important risk factor for mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, cancers and musculoskeletal disorders, causing nearly three million deaths worldwide annually.

While the number of obese men in India increased from 2.3 million to 4.4 million between 1980 and 2008, it rose from 2.1 million to 8 million among women during the same period. Dr K Srinath Reddy, president of the Public Health Foundation of India, said the country should introduce “a fat tax” soon. He feels tax is an important mechanism for influencing consumer choice. “When Mauritius substituted palm oil with soya oil in its ration shops, cholesterol levels dipped in a big way in only five years. When Poland withdrew its subsidy on animal fat in the ‘90s and permitted imported of vegetable oil, it led to a major dip in cardiovascular mortality rates. It’s important that India makes healthier foods less expensive and foods that have excess salt, sugar or unhealthy fat more expensive so that consumption pattern is altered,” he explained.

Lawyers and property consultants said the judgment would cause hardship to owners who have bought dispute-free properties on GPA and SA simply because paperwork wasn’t complete for a proper sale registration. Such owners will have problems selling these properties, senior lawyer Kumar Amit, who works for public sector banks that fund transactions through first power of attorney, said. The SC had ruled that, effective prospectively from October 11, registered sale deed will be the only valid instrument of transaction of property in the country. The verdict is likely to affect a large number of property owners. A senior lawyer who vets sale documents for a leading bank estimated that around 70% of property sales in Delhi take place through GPA and SA. Apartment owners in societies which have not got a completion certificate will find themselves on a sticky wicket because these flats cannot be converted into freehold.

A senior lawyer who vets sale documents for a leading bank estimated that around 70% of property sales in Delhi take place through GPA and SA.

Until now, these properties could be sold through GPA and SA. The new ruling will effectively mean such apartments cannot be sold. Experts also say the verdict will raise the market value of freehold real estate while depressing the price of leasehold properties. Those holding properties on GPA and SA will have to get a sale deed registered if they wish to sell the property in future. But lawyers pointed out that many of the owners may face problems getting sale deeds because their properties do not have a clean title. They said city authorities must share part of the blame for the current state of affairs. “Take the erstwhile unauthorized colonies. Even after regularization, a large number of properties here are still owned through power of attorney because the authorities have never actively facilitated their conversion to freehold. With the SC ruling, these properties cannot

be sold as the owners do not have property titles,” a lawyer said. In 2004, the government had made registration of the sale agreement mandatory-requiring payment of 90% of stamp duty and corporation tax-for a property transaction to be deemed complete. Therefore, the government will not gain additional revenue following the SC order. The registrar’s office also keeps track of sale agreements which show all transactions related to a particular property. So, a lawyer argued, a GPA and a registered SA were good enough for sale and purchase of property. As the GPA and SA will not be considered sale documents any more, bank loans will not be available for property transactions which, for some reason, take place through this route.

5 things returning NRIs should know about salaries in India w

hat kind of salaries NRIs returning to India from the US could expect? Broadly, you could expect 40-70% of your US salary as your salary in India. The next step is to understand what exactly salary means. Salaries in India are quoted in terms of CTC or cost to company. CTC is nothing but the cost that the company incurs to employ you and keep you employed. It includes your pay and anything else that the company may incur to keep you in employment. It’s important because a lot of components of your CTC may not translate into actual takehome cash every month. Says Kris Lakshmikanth, Founder CEO of The Head Hunters India Pvt Ltd, “As a broad thumb rule, what you get in hand will be 70% of your CTC. So if your annual CTC is Rs 50 lakh, you can expect to get an annual take home of 35 lakh or Rs 2.9 lakh per month.” So what happens to the difference? That’s one question we will try to answer today. The next is, there are many components that are offered in addition to the CTC, ESOPs being a good case in point. So what are the things you need to look at there? Let’s take a look. 1. Certain components of CTC may not be cash components A company may beef-up your CTC with components that don’t really translate into month-end cash or that may have just a notional components. Some examples include: -Value of perquisites is included in CTC. So if you are provided with a company accommodation, car, driver, child education expenses and so on, the value of these get included in the CTC.

-Banks may include interest subsidies in CTC. That is, if you are a bank employee, you are entitled to a discounted rate on loans. The difference between the market rate and the discounted rate maybe considered part of your CTC. Even corporate give out loans and advances at subsidized interest rates and the subsidy would be added to the CTC. -Companies may include the cost of group medical or life insurance. Some companies may add food subsidies, that is, you may be getting a subsidy on your lunch in the office canteen. If you carry your lunch from home, you may not actually benefit from this component. Similarly, if the company provides transport, there maybe transport costs or subsidies. -Companies include gratuity in the CTC. Gratuity is a sort of bonus that is paid out when you resign or retire from your company. The catch: You are entitled to gratuity only after completing 5 years in the company. -Employer’s contribution to your provident fund is included in CTC. This amount is deposited by the employer in your provident fund and so this does not form part of your take-home. You will get this amount only at the time you resign or retire. “Ask to see the cash-in-hand figure. That will give you a good idea of what you will get,” advises Aseem Juneja, Country Manager - India at US based executive search firm ZRG Partners. 2. Deductions further reduce monthly take home Even after you have arrived at the cash value of your take home, there are certain deductions made from it. Tax is one such deduction. It is nothing but the taxes withheld from your income by the company.

amount is deducted from your monthly salary and deposited in the provident fund. This is your contribution and comes out of your monthly salary, thus reducing your take-home. Again, a lot of companies make this deduction optional. However, making provident fund contributions maybe a wise saving tool. Currently company provident funds earn tax free returns of 8.5% per annum. Over a long period of time, that would build up to a decent corpus. 3. Annualised and variable components It is the equivalent of ‘withholding tax’ that several countries have. How much tax is deducted depends on the various components of your salary. This guide should help you understand. In addition to income tax deduction, you will find a professional tax deduction being made every month. “A lot of companies may allow you to choose the components in your salary. For instance, they may allocate a certain amount as a ‘flexi pay’ component. Within this amount, you maybe able to choose components such as HRA, medical reimbursement, etc depending on what maybe most tax efficient for you. If you are in a higher income bracket, it would be wise to consult a professional to help you optimize your salary to make it tax effective,” advises Lakshmikanth. Also read: Companies like M&M, Wipro, KPMG, Mercer dangle custom-made perks to retain talent The other deduction is your contribution to provident fund. This

There are certain components that are paid out to you annually or subject to your performance; these do not become part of your monthly take home. Examples include leave travel allowance, annual bonus etc. “Variable salaries can range between 15-50%,” Lakshmikanth says, adding, “For programmers the variable pay would be around 15% of the CTC while for marketing professionals it could go up to 50%. Before the 2008 crisis, most companies paid out the variable components in full, but that has changed now. There are various factors that come into play while arriving at the variable pay outs. The company’s performance as well as your individual performance would both matter.” 4. Understand what your ESOP consists of Employee Stock Option Plans or ESOPs are given out over and above the CTC. The company gives employees an option to purchase stocks at a certain future date at a discounted price. As the value of the company scrip increases, the employee stands to earn capital gains. “When a company

offers ESOPs, the CTC part of the compensation maybe a little lower,” Lakshmikanth explains. While ESOPs might seem attractive when the company HR presents the numbers to you, it is important to look into the fine print. Says Juneja, “There are a number of issues here. Firstly, people do not realize that there is a certain vesting period for ESOPs. That is, you will be eligible to exercise the ESOP only after working in the company for a certain period, say 2 years or so. The second issue is the strike price. This is the price at which the ESOP is granted. If the market price at the time of exercising the ESOP is lower than the strike price, there is really no gain. And that has happened many times in the past.” So is there room for negotiation? “There is always a 10% room for negotiation in any component of your salary,” Juneja says adding, “So you might ask the employer to reduce the variable component by 10% or the value of ESOPs by 10% and increase the cash component by 10%. It’s worth giving a shot.” 5. Don’t forget to negotiate a relocation package “It’s very common for senior executives to forget to negotiate a relocation package,” says Juneja. “Relocating to another country, even if it is India, especially with a family in tow can be an expensive affair. You might get a few weeks of accommodation. Sometimes that time may not be enough. So negotiate a package beforehand. For instance, make sure the relocation package includes important things like getting a real estate agent through the company. That way, the likelihood of bumping into rogue agents is less,” he adds.

Prashant Bhushan beaten up for his Kashmir comments

Prashant Bhushan was speaking to Times Now news channel when the two attackers barged into his office in the New Lawyers Chamber opposite the Supreme Court. One of the attackers slapped, dragged and punched Bhushan repeatedly. The attacker pinned him down on the floor and kicked on his chest.

As the staff and others gathered, one of the two attackers managed to escape while the other was caught and handed over to the police. The attackers entered Prashant Bhushan’s office claiming that they had an appointment with him. After the attack, Bhushan said it appeared that the men targeted him for his stand on Jammu and Kashmir. “They were saying that I have made some comments on Kashmir to which they were taking objection. I have said that a referendum should be held in Kashmir,” he said. Delhi Police have registered a case and one person has been arrested.

Home minister P Chidambaram has condemned the attack on Prashant Bhushan. He said Delhi police was looking for the second attacker.

Prashant Bhushan beaten up at his chamber

Activist Kiran Bedi called the attack shocking and shameful. “I am very distressed. But you got evidence, I think these people will be in jail for a long time now,” she said in an interview to Times Now.

Senior Supreme Court advocate and key Team Anna member Prashant Bhushan was beaten up in his chamber on Wednesday afternoon allegedly for his comments on Kashmir.

“It shows the amount of intolerance level we have reached. I don’t know what they are him up for, but they don’t know they are beating up such a good man who continues to work for the community day in and day out,” Bedi said.

According to Times Now, the two attackers belong to Bhagat Singh Kranti Sena. The attackers told Times Now that they were provoked by Bhushan’s comments on Kashmir. Bhushan filed an FIR against the attackers. He has been taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital for check-up and treatment.

In an earlier interview, Prashant had reportedly said that the Kashmiri people should be given ‘azadi’ if they don’t want to live with India. He had also reportedly recommended that withdrawl of Indian army from Kashmir.

Raj Rajaratnam sentenced to State gets more 11 years in prison gas from Centre Picture source: newshopper.sulekha.

Prosecutors called Rajaratnam the “modern face” of insider trading, putting him in a dubious pantheon of Wall Street power players such as takeover specialist Ivan Boesky and junk bond financier Michael Milken, principal figures in a mid-1980s insider-trading case. Both men served about two years in prison. The Galleon case sent shock waves through Wall Street and the hedge fund industry, where traders can try to get an edge at all costs. Prosecutors say Rajaratnam and others crossed the line by pumping corporate insiders for corporate earnings or details of mergers that had not yet been announced.

Raj Rajaratnam

Raj Rajaratnam, a self-made hedge fund tycoon convicted in the biggest Wall Street trading scandal in a generation, was ordered on Thursday to serve 11 years in prison, one of the longest sentences ever in an insidertrading case. The sentence was lighter than the 19-1/2 year minimum prison term that prosecutors had sought, but is still above the 10 years handed down recently in another major insider trading case. Federal inmates typically must serve at least 85 percent of their terms before being eligible for release. It was not immediately clear if Rajaratnam would be ordered to prison immediately, at a later date, or allowed to remain under house arrest while he appeals his conviction. Prosecutors and defense lawyers were still discussing sentencing matters in court on Thursday morning after the judge announced the intended prison term.

AWARD WINNER

Award Winner Chief SATWINDER SAINI Introduced for the first time in Australia

The Galleon Group fund founder, 54, made no statement on his behalf before the sentence was pronounced by US District Judge Richard Holwell at a court hearing in Manhattan. The judge also said he would impose a $10 million fine. Rajaratnam was convicted of 14 securities fraud and conspiracy charges in May after a two-month trial. Prosecutors had made Rajaratnam the central figure of a sprawling criminal case, unveiled in October 2009, that touched some of America’s top companies, including Goldman Sachs Group Inc, Intel Corp, IBM and the elite McKinsey & Co consultancy. “There’s no one who’s Rajaratnam’s equal in terms of the length and breadth of his insider trading crimes,” Assistant US Attorney Reed Brodsky told the court, urging for the maximum punishment.

The investigation was marked by the most extensive use of secret FBI phone taps in a white-collar case. Such tactics usually are reserved for Mafia and drug trafficking investigations. The Galleon case has been a major victory for the US Attorney’s Office in Manhattan. Out of 26 people, including traders, lawyers, executives and consultants charged in the case, 25 have pleaded guilty or were convicted at trial of supplying or trading on illicit stock tips. One is at large. Insider-trading defendants often get sentences lower than what’s prescribed in federal guidelines, out of the view that their crime is less harmful than other types of whitecollar misdeeds. But judges have been handing down some tough sentences recently. A former Galleon employee, stock trader Zvi Goffer, 34, was sentenced last month to 10 years in prison and ordered to forfeit $10 million after being found guilty at trial.

n a relief to the state that is reeling under a severe power shortage on account of the Sakala Janula Samme, the Centre has allocated an additional 0.63 MMSCMD of natural gas from the ONGC’s nominated blocks on a permanent basis for use by the private power plants. With this, the state will be able to generate an additional 130 MW on of power. The Centre sent a communiqué regarding the allocation of the additional gas to the principal secretary, Department of Energy, on Thursday. The Centre has also requested the state to send in a detailed report on the utilisation of the additional natural gas supplied to the power plants. In response to the recent letter written by Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, to Union minister for petroleum and natural gas S. Jaipal Reddy, urging him to allocate natural gas to power plants in the state, the Centre has allocated 0.29 MMSCMD to Spectrum Power, 0.11 MMSCMD to Lanco Kondapalli, 0.03 MMSCMD to Reliance Infra and 0.2 MMSCMD to GVK Industries. The Centre has directed the ONGC and GAIL to ensure that the gas is supplied to these plants. The state government on its part has directed the power utilities to immediately take necessary action to begin generating power using the additional gas supplies and easing the power crisis in the state. Currently, the private power plants are generating about 1765 MW against a total installed capacity of 2495 MW. The APTransco has already made total purchases of 19.78 MU worth Rs 8.8 crore from all possible sources outside the state as of Thursday.

Digvijay accuses Advani, BJP of ‘encouraging terrorism’

“BJP and L K Advani are responsible for encouraging terrorism in the country. They stoke communal hatred and blame the minority community,” Singh said addressing a rally in Saidnagar village here. The AICC incharge of UP, who has been attacking Team Anna, claimed that Anna Hazare and Ramdev “were products of RSS.” Attacking the Mayawati government, he alleged that it was patronising land mafia and black markeeters in Uttar Pradesh.

Training his guns on L K Advani, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh today alleged that the BJP leader and his party had stoked communal hatred and were responsible for “encouraging terrorism” in the country.

Digvijay Singh

“Put a BSP flag and grab land is the norm of the day,” Singh said. He claimed that that only 2 litres of kerosene was being distributed to every ration card holder in the state in place of five litres allotted by the Centre. “The rest of it is being sold to black marketeers,” the Congress leader alleged.

Our galaxy full of ‘time bombs’? Picture source: ATI

Many skilled foreign nationals from China have been waiting 6 to 7 years and can expect to wait additional years, it said.

Should Anna Hazare form a political party? Picture source: ATI

In the EB-2 category, second employment-based preference, skilled foreign nationals from India and China may wait six years or more, the study said. “The two factors that have caused the long waits for employment-based green cards are: the 140,000 annual quota, which is too low, and the per country limit on employmentbased preference categories, which restricts the annual number of green cards for immigrants from one country to 7 per cent of the total. This, the NFAP analysis noted, means that skilled foreign nationals from India and China, who make up most of the applications, wait years longer than nationals of other countries.

Professionally qualified Indians may have to wait as long as 70 years to get their Green Card in the US, a new study has said, amid growing concerns that the current country-specific quota policy poses a major hurdle in attracting talent from countries like India and China.

the Washington-based National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) said in a report.

“Our system for allowing employers to sponsor skilled foreign nationals for permanent residence (a green card) is plagued by inadequate quotas that result in years of waiting and frustration,”

The study concluded: “A highly skilled Indian national sponsored today for an employment-based immigrant visa in the 3rd preference could wait potentially 70 years to receive a green card.”

An October 2011 NFAP study analysed the employment- based green card backlog and produced findings that should give pause to policymakers.

A number of lawmakers, policy makers and politicians here have been demanding removing this country-specific cap on the Green Card as well as on H-1B category of visas. “We must stop telling American companies that they cannot hire the high-skilled workers they need. By making it difficult for them to obtain temporary and permanent visas for high-skilled workers, the federal government is slowing growth and worse, promoting the outsourcing of American jobs,” New York Mayor, Michele Bloomberg, said early this year.

Anna Hazare

Launching a direct attack on the Congress ahead of the Hisar Lok Sabha bypoll, Anna Hazare aide Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday called upon voters to hand down a “historic defeat” to the party. “I am here to convey Anna Hazare’s message. If voters of Hisar launch a campaign against the Congress government, the party will be forced to accept the Jan Lokpal Bill. The eyes of entire India are now on the Hisar byelection,” Arvind Kejriwal said. The Congress hit back at Team Anna’s campaign in Hisar, saying Anna Hazare should come out in the open if he wanted to be in politics. “If Anna Hazare wants to get into politics, he should form his own party,” Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said. Should Anna Hazare accept Congress party’s challenge and form his own party?

Katrina Kaif to sing, para-glide in ‘Dhoom 3’

atrina Kaif has a task cut out for K herself in Dhoom 3. She will be required to do a lot of challenging things in the movie.

If getting trained in scuba diving or learning to ride a bike wasn’t enough, Katrina will now reach for the sky and try to learn para-gliding for her role in Dhoom 3 to be directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya whose first film as a director, Tashan, failed to make a mark at the box office. However, the director and producer (Aditya Chopra) have big plans for Dhoom 3, not the least of which is Katrina’s makeover in the movie. Buzz is that Katrina will be doing incredible stunts in the movie, and her fans will be particularly pleased to know that she might even sing a song. Katrina has already taken her baby steps into the realm of music by learning to play the guitar. Well, at least she can strum after a fashion. Ironically, though the actress is taking on new challenges, she is a bit squeamish about kissing or donning a bikini. The movie will have Katrina paired opposite Aamir Khan. This would be their first film together, and considering the lengths to which the punctilious Aamir goes to slip under the skin of his character, Katrina better pull up her socks.

bollywood music Ra.One

Expectations. Expectations and more expectations. This is how one looks forward to the music of Ra.One and why not, after all, this is the biggest Shahrukh Khan film ever in terms of the buzz created along with immense hype since it was launched. The last time music directors Vishal-Shekhar and ‘BaadShah’ Shahrukh Khan joined hands, the result was Om Shanti Om (2007) which is still considered the best work by the duo who also erupted a volcano last year in the name of ‘Sheila Ki Jawaani’ (Tees Maar Khan). So are these expectations met? Well, very much so as each of the seven unique tracks along with a few instrumental themes and remixes bring on a variety that makes Ra.One a winner all the way!

The soundtrack opens with “Chammak Challo” , which has already gained popularity for two reasons. First, due to its leaked International Version on the net three months ago, second, a renowned International artistAkon, has been roped in for this

Indo-Western unique composition. If that is not enough, hear the lyrics ‘Tu Meri Chammak Challo, Teri picture ka main Hero’, written by Vishal Dadlani and Niranjan Iyengar. The brilliance with which Akon renders the Hindi vocals can even give Ash King (“Te Amo” and “I love You” fame) a complex for his Hindi dictions. Hamsika Iyer, who is a regular voice with ad jingles, lends good support to him and makes the composition highly addictive and one that will be remembered for some time to come. Vishal-Shekhar are also on the verge of breaking Pritam’s record for most number of versions of a particular song by providing four alternative versions of Chammak Challo. First on the line is “Chammak Challo Punjabi Mix” which has ‘plug-it-on-and-dance’ flavour that is designed for dance floors as well as parties. “Chammak Challo Club Mix and Remix” makes the experience even better with “Chammak Challo International Version” (leaked version) being a solo outing for Akon with no Hamsika Iyer. But where’s the variety? Maybe one version too many then. Shafqat Amanat Ali, Vishal Dadlani, Clinton Cerejo, Shekhar Ravjiani…yes that’s the list of singers for the next romantic composition “Dildaara-Stand By Me” (based on Ben.E.King’s classic ‘Stand By Me’). It’s melodious, breezy and a sure shot chartbuster from the word ‘Go’. Shafqat Amanat Ali comes out of his sufiana-comfort zone and once again his voice reminds you of Shankar Mahadevan, but nevertheless he has been used beautifully with good support from others for the English rendition. Check out some innovative vivacious classical notes with rock

Music Review :

beats from 2:10 to 2:30. The lyricist Kumaar, a hot favourite for VishalShekhar, does a commendable job once again with his pen. However, one more antara could have been included but nevertheless it’s a song which could be played in loop for hours at a stretch. “Criminal” a ‘qaatil’ composition for which Vishal Dadlani and Shruti Pathak join Akon, has all in it to be a havoc at the discotheques. An immensely innovative track which will certainly gain appreciation at an international level. It’s high on Vishal-Shekhar trademark orchestra and drum beats and is filled with English and Hindi vocals with some apt lyrics written by Vishal Dadlani and Kumaar. Akon impresses again with his Hindi dictions and Vishal Dadlani stands tall with him. Shruti Pathak after ‘Aas Paas Hai Khuda’ and ‘Tujhe Bhula Diya’ from Anjaana Anjaani is used well by the composers in a male dominated song where the protagonist is describing the ‘latka-jhatkas’ of his lady love as ‘qaatilana’. Undoubtedly the song needs to be promoted aggressively (SRK is all guns blazing for this number) and will be a rage once the video is out. “Criminal Club Mix” provides nothing extraordinary with some usual bass and increased tempo. The original is far better. Ever heard a fusion of Tabla beats and English renditions? Try this next six minute composition “Bhare Naina” which falls in the same corridor as Piya Kesariyo from Hum Tum Shabana. Crooned by Nandini Shrikar, it starts with a haunting prelude which seems the basic theme of Ra.One as it is heard again in the interludes and in other tracks as well, including an instrumental. Vishal Dadlani and Shekhar Ravjiani join in and

their English vocals and Sanskrit enchants in this classical cum western outing, which shows an altogether different facet of the composer-duo. Panchhi Jalonvi’s lyrics are fresh and at the same time painful. While one waits to see it rise in popularity in days to come, one feels it has potential to enjoy a long shelf life. For “Jiya Mora Ghabraye (The Chase)” , director Anubhav Sinha’s makes his presence felt as it is quite similar to the themes of his previous ventures Dus (2005) and Cash (2007). It’s more of an instrumental where a talent like Sukhwinder Singh is wasted by making him render some classical notes and alaap which seems a bit unnecessary in a total rock feel environment. As a rocktheme instrumental it might work but expect nothing much from the lyrics and vocals. What continues after these seven tracks is a series of instrumentals, three in number, each about one and a half minutes duration and almost the same theme that is heard in the previous songs. First in line is “Comes The Light (Theme)” which gives a mild feeling of Don-The Chase Begins Theme. “I Am On (Theme)” is

Shamir says, “When I was given the opportunity of recording a patriotic song, only one name came to my mind Sonu Niigaam. He is not only the best singer in the industry, but he has this amazing voice that

enables him to hit the highest notes. We all know that Sonu operates from the US these days. When I expressed a desire to record Naman hai to Sonu, he immediately agreed. The song has some very high notes, but Sonu practised for a bit in the studio, and did justice to the touching song and brought tears to the people’s eyes in the studio. Very few can scale octaves without their voice cracking.” Sonu Niigaam admits, “It has always been a pleasure working with Shamirji and this time he made me discover a musical facet in me of which I was myself unaware. The process was really fun. Shamir got me to surpass my own expectations.”

Ra.One is an unconventional album for sure, especially when one looks at it from the Bollywood perspective. Change is good and it is slowly but steadily happening. While Vishal-Shekhar can take pride on coming up with something that justifies a certain quality, SRK and Anubhav Sinha can be rest assured that this is one of their best works till date. With the kind of hype that has surrounded the movie; the music should find instant attention and will grow from strength to strength with over a month before the movie releases. Highly Recommended!! omputer-dependent cars could soon become targets of hackers aiming to steal vehicles, track movements or disrupt car’s safety systems, security experts have claimed. According to a report by US computer security software—maker McAfee, the so—called “embedded systems”, that control an array of car’s functions including door locking, engine ignition, navigation, brakes and communications, are reliant on connectivity via cables, WiFi, Bluetooth and 3G networks, meaning they could easily be hacked by cybercrooks. According to The Telegraph, researchers have earlier also proved that it is possible to breach the security of on—board computers. The University of Washington last year demonstated CarShark, a software programme that allowed them to take control of the Control Area Network, a standard system in modern cars that allows moving parts to communicate electronically.

Car hacked could greatly affect your personal life, says security experts

The researchers disabled the brakes in a moving car, locked the doors and closed the engine. The CarShark team, however, stressed that their attacks were not easy to carry out. The paper quoted Stuart McClure from McAfee, as saying that “many examples of research—based hacks show the potential threats and depth of compromise that expose the consumer.”

“It’s one thing to have your email or laptop compromised but having your car hacked could translate to dire risks to your personal safety,” he added. According to the report, the trend towards computerised cars is expected to continue. Search giant Google has pioneered robotic vehicles that drive themselves, and in June Nevada passed laws to allow them on public roads.

Microsoft set to release Windows 8 details M

icrosoft is expected to offer the first public peek at its new operating system on Tuesday at a conference for Windows developers. The software giant has described Windows 8 as the most significant upgrade to its ubiquitous operating system since the company adopted the desktop, mouse and the graphical user interface with Windows 95. Prior to that, personal computers running Microsoft’s operating systems were text—based and could only be operated by typing in commands. Naturally, the technology world is holding its breath for details of the new operating system, which is designed to be touch—screen friendly and compatible with both traditional PCs and tablet computers. Microsoft has been quiet about what to expect at its Build Windows Conference, which starts Tuesday in Los Angeles, but announced Monday that it would live stream a keynote address by Windows chief Steve Sinofsky, which it said would “reveal important facts about Windows 8.”

Microsoft has previously said that the new OS would feature live tiles with notifications from Faceboook, email, calendar and other apps, and would dramatically improve start— up times when turning on the computer. Windows 8 will be the first Microsoft operating system designed to work both with Intel’s traditional PC architecture and the ARM chips that are used to run many tablets and smartphones. The operating system is expected to hit the market in

2012, succeeding Windows 7, which is the most successful operating system in Microsoft’s history with more than 400 million copies sold. Analysts see Windows 8 as crucial to Microsoft’s future and its only chance of closing the gap with Apple and Google over the burgeoning demand for tablet computers, a market that is cannibalizing traditional laptops and is expected to reach sales of 300 million units per year by 2015, according to research firm Gartner.

Samsung launches first 4G smartphones S

amsung Electronics, world’s second-largest manufacturer of mobile phones, launched its first smartphones based on fourthgeneration (4G) communication technology in a bid to meet growing demand for high-speed wireless services. Galaxy S2 LTE and Galaxy S2 HD LTE compatible with longterm evolution (LTE) technology were rolled out at a media event. The two new smartphones support LTE with data transmission five times faster than the existing third-generation (3G) mobile phones, featuring functions offered by Galaxy S2 smartphones, the company said. Galaxy S2 LTE is equipped with an Android 2.3, or the latest version of the Android platform, a 4.5-inch wide Super AMOLED display and a 1.5 gigahertz dual core processor, while the Galaxy S2 HD LTE is featuring a 4.65-inch high-definition (HD) AMOLED display with 110 per cent natural colour reproduction and 180-degree viewing angle. “The 4G LTE technology became the base for enjoying high-speed and high-resolution wireless services. The new products will meet rising demand for such services in an environment where global wireless operators are transitioning to 4G networks,” Shin Jongkyun, President and Head of Samsung’s mobile communications business, told reporters. Mr. Shin forecast sales of the new LTE smartphones would approach the ones of the existing Galaxy S series, adding that it might take time to reach the goal as the LTE networks have yet to be covered nationwide. Global sales of the Galaxy S2 smartphones reached more than 10 million units since its debut in April, according Samsung.

Prithvi-II missile successfully soars again

Prithvi-II being test-fired from the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, Orissa.

W

ithin a span of two days, India demonstrated the reliability of another surface-to-surface missile, with the successful test-firing of Prithvi-II ballistic system to its full range of 350 km on Monday. (Hypersonic missile Shourya was successfully testfired from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur on the Orissa coast on Saturday.) Prithvi-II, was launched at 9 a.m. from Launch ComplexIII of the ITR, Balasore in Chandipur by personnel of the Strategic Force Command (SFC) as part of a regular training exercise. After a flight of 500 seconds, it closed in on the predefined target in the Bay of Bengal with a single-digit accuracy of less than 10 metres. The flight test met all the mission objectives and it was a text-book launch. A battery of radars, electro-optical systems and telemetry stations located along the coast tracked the missile throughout its flight. A naval ship located near the target witnessed the splash down. The missile was picked up randomly from the production lot and the launch was monitored by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) scientists. Prithvi-II, first indigenously developed strategic missile by the DRDO, was inducted into the armed forces. It was flight-tested a number of times as part of regular user trials. The single-stage, liquid-propelled missile is equipped with an advanced inertial navigation, control and guidance system and can carry a payload of 500-1,000 kg to a distance of 350 km. Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister V. K. Saraswat congratulated scientists and other DRDO employees and the armed forces for the successful flight test, says a press release here. www.indian-times.com.au

approached for Bigg Boss 5

A

fter Madhuri Dixit decided to relocate to India, Bigg Boss makers have decided to make the most of this opportunity by inviting her to be a part of season 5 being hosted by Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt. Madhuri has apparently been approached by Endemol and Colors for the show and is reportedly being offered a huge amount for a special appearance in the House. Other celebrity guests on the show include boxer Mike Tyson and actor Babara Mori. Charles Shobhraj’s wife Nihita Biswas, 22, has also confirmed her presence on Colors’ controversial reality show. “Madhuri will be paid equivalent to international boxer Mike Tyson while actor Babara Mori’s remuneration is still being worked out,” a source told Daily Bhaskar. The show is set to go on air in October.

It is heard that (according to TAM ratings), Shahrukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra’s special appearance on the finale of Just Dance, had 97 million viewers. What impressed the audience about Just Dance, the most was HR’s emotional and sentimental touch that he lent, each time a contestant was eleminated.

ajeev Khandelwal’s currently spending time spinning discs and making music. The actor is now a DJ. And where’s he playing at? That, you’ll get to know on September 30 when his movie “Soundtrack” releases. He plays the role of a DJ-turnedmusician in the movie. (So ladies, hold your horses, no point scouring the city’s discos looking for him.) “I took a crash course in DJ-ing because I wanted to get used to the equipment and the console. I didn’t want to look like I am seeing these things for the first time,” says Rajeev. He plays the role of Raunak Kaul, a young man from a small town who heads to the city and makes it big. “It is loosely based on Beethoven’s story.” Like the master composer who lost his hearing, Raunak too slowly begins to turn deaf. But it’s not just this handicap that he has to deal with. He also has to battle his vices — alcohol, drugs and women, which soon begin to engulf him.

The movie directed by Nirav Ghosh stars Soha Ali Khan, who plays the role of a girl who is hearing impaired and also Rajeev’s love interest. “The film has a different narrative. It’s a story well-told and has some good music composed by the Midival Punditz,” Rajeev vouches. That apart he has just wrapped up shooting for Tanuja Chandra’s film, “Raakh” and in the pipeline is a film with Alphonse Roy, who was the cinematographer / director of photography for Rajeev’s first film, “Amir.” Rajeev is a man on a mission. Not just movies, he is also working on a couple of projects for the small screen. He is on board National Geographic Channel for their new show titled, ‘Super Cars.’ “I wasn’t a machine lover till I met these super cars. Having heard the names of these brands since childhood, I wanted to know what exactly makes them so popular and special,” he says. The show will feature cars such as Camaro, Chevy Volt, The Dodge Challenger, Viper among others. The programme spanning 18 episodes will dissect each car and tell the viewers about the engineering technique that’s gone into the car, why they are popular, where they are available, the rich who drive such vehicles… Asked which one of the lot is his favourite, he grins, “Difficult to pick one. It’s like having to choose between Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz. I think I would pick The Rolls Royce Phantom,” and with a grin adds, “I even asked them to give it to me as my remuneration,” he jokes. ‘Super Cars’ will premiere on October 10 at 10 p.m. and each episode will focus on one particular brand of car. “As the face of the show I request automobile lovers to watch the episodes.” So machine lovers, here’s what you can look forward to and ladies even if the cars don’t interest you, Rajeev will!

eer lovers, cheers! The drink is one of the healthiest alcoholic beverages available, when taken in moderation, a new study has claimed. According to the study, commissioned by The Beer Academy , the drink is a rich source of vitamins, fibre, minerals and antioxidants and has relatively low calorific value as compared to other alcoholic beverages. “Beer contains vitamins which can help you to maintain a well-balanced healthy diet, fibre to keep you regular, readily absorbed antioxidants and minerals such as silicon which may help to lower your risk of osteoporosis,” a spokeswoman was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying. A survey found that while 68 per cent of people consider beer to be Britain’s national drink, some 10 per cent wrongly believe that it contains fat, and 13 per cent believe the beverage is made from chemicals and not barley and hops. The study also explores the psychological and sociability benefits of people enjoying a pint in their local pub -- yet pubs are closing at a rate of 39 a week. It argues the pub is at the heart of every community and a place where people go to enjoy company and find out local news. Pete Brown, an award-winning author, said: “Still, we persist in the myth that somehow beer is an inferior drink to foreign imports such as wine. From Government receptions through to weddings and business occasions, wine rather than beer is served. “It has been fashionable to look down on our own national drink in favour of overseas imports. But to do that is to turn our backs on our great British success story and our own heritage, and miss out on the myriad tastes and complexities that beer can offer.” www.indian-times.com.au

The regular coastline protrudes out into the sea at Cape Comorin. The district headquarters of the region, Kanyakumari is also a prominent pilgrim centre. Much famous for its beaches and picturesque sunrises and sunsets, it is a wonder to witness the sun rising and setting in the seas here especially on full moon days. This is the only place in India, where the sunset and moonrise can be viewed simultaneously on a full moon day. The paddy fields, coconut groves, mineral sands and blue waters give it beautiful surroundings. Named after the Goddess Kannyakumari Amman, the presiding deity of the area, it is said that Goddess Parvati in one of her incarnations as Devi Kanya did penance on one of the rocks here to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Once known as the ‘Granary of Travancore’, Kanyakumari has multicolored sand. However, the seashore is rocky and dangerous and a manmade wall marks the limit where one can venture safely. People and tourists are constantly warned to stay off the rocks and policemen are vigilant enough to turn away anyone more adventurous than desired. The lighthouse offers excellent views of the city. The sea is rough here and one can see sea waves splashing furiously against the rocky cliffs. The beach is a welcome change but does not offer the facilities of sunbathing or swimming in the seas. However, one may buy a variety of shells being sold on the Kanyakumari beach and visit the Vivekananda memorial situated on an island near the mainland.

Outback dreams: Beyond the lush green riverbank stretches the Australian outback. Explore the rugged terrain on foot or join a 4WD or four-wheel motorbike tour. Set up camp in the wilderness and sleep under the stars, or see the stunning scenery from the air in a hot air balloon or a joy flight. On the fairway:

Unpack your golf clubs and make the most a number of excellent riverside golf courses. Tee off surrounded by beautiful natural bushland and stunning river views. October 2011 Edition

Being a confluence of two great seas, the best choices to buy from Kanyakumari, as souvenirs, are the seashells in various shapes and sizes and handicraft items made from seashells and palm leaves. The other things are packets of colored sea sands and trinkets for those who would love to keep a bit of Kanyakumari with them always.

Raveena Tandon to star in Neerav Ghosh’s next

Malaika Arora Khan sizzles on the cover of FHM The latest edition of FHM has Malaika Arora Khan as the cover girl. Gosh...has anyone ever kept track of the number of mags for which she has been the cover girl. Whatever be the case, FHM is different as usual. This edition of FHM has Malaika Arora Khan sizzling like never before! “Some of the sexiest woman in the world are married and have kids...I think being added adds to the charm and the mystery,” she states. And in order to support her statement she ‘drops’ names like Heidi Klum, Miranda Kerr and Gisele Bundchen. We totally agree with you gorgeous. Talking about films, she states, “Films never really excited me...I just love the song and dance routine. When I did ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’, I thought let me do something that I enjoy. Since I was a kid, dance has been a part of my life in some form or the other.” And talking about music, she says, “I love U2, The Beatles, Santana, Craig David etc...” For all those who wonder as to what this beautiful queen does when she isn’t working, so here it is... in her own words. “I am quite boring when I am not working. It’s usually cleaning or cooking, fetching the kid from cricket practice and going to the gym.” No fret folks, the saga of Madame Malaika doesn’t end here. It goes on (and pretty well at that) in the latest edition of FHM. Do not miss to pick up a copy to get an inside dope on Malaika!

Raveena Tandon After co-producing the well-received Chalo Dilli, Mahesh Bhupathi has now moved on. His next production will be an independent production and that too with Raveena Tandon in the lead. The comedy that Bhupathi will produce with Raveena in the lead is being described as a “Delhi Belly without the expletives but still with the anything-goes mood speed and dialogues.” The film goes on the floors later this year and will be directed by Neerav Ghosh whose debut film Soundtrack featuring Rajeev Khandelwal as a deaf DJ, is on release. Neerav’s film that Bhupathi has asked Raveena to do is an absolute antithesis. Says a source, “Mahesh has known Raveena for the longest. When he read Neerav Ghosh’s script he fell in love with it. It’s madcap zany crime caper comedy and requires a housewife as its main protagonist. Mahesh and his director thought Raveena was perfect for the part. Raveena who has never done a full-on

comedy was not too sure to begin with but Mahesh and Neerav convinced her. And also, Raveena’s other heroine-centric film Sudipto Chattopadhyay’s Shobhana 7 Nights got pushed forward a bit, hence Raveena agreed.” The crazy comedy would also feature Boman Irani and Aditya Panscholi. Refusing to comment on the project, Raveena said, “I’m getting very interesting offers. This is a very important time for women actors in Bollywood. We have Vidya Balan doing The Dirty Picture, Bebo (Kareena Kapoor) in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine. I am very clear about doing substantial parts and only when my children don’t need me to be around all the time.” Director Neerav Ghosh confirms, “It’s a black comedy about mistaken identity, gangsters, conmen, missing bag of money. And yes, Raveena is on.” Strangely, Mahesh Bhupathi denied he’s producing this project.

Vedic Astrology: The Astrology of Ancient India Upon discovering the world of astrology, the public reading audience is often amazed at first to find that the local Sun-Sign column is but the most visible tip of the proverbial, vast astrological iceberg. There are many systems of astrology, from many cultures the world over. The Babylonians, the Chinese, the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Hindus all have developed extensive systems of Astrology. This article will concern itself with the astrology of the Hindu culture. It is known as Hindu Astrology, or Vedic Astrology, for it springs forth from the ancient Vedas, the spiritual Bible of ancient India, reputed to be over 5000 years old! The astrology of ancient India comes to us originally from the Rig Veda, the oldest of the four Vedas. The Vedas were originally an oral tradition that was passed down from family to family, generation to generation, reputedly over thousands of years. Along with the Vedas are ancillary texts known as Vedanga, or limbs of the Vedas. One of these limbs specifically explains astrology. It is called Jyotish Vedanga in Sanskrit, meaning “the limb of

astrology.” The oral traditions of this sacred knowledge were called Shruti in Sanskrit, meaning “that which is heard.” Latter the oral traditions were written down, and referred to as Smriti in Sanskrit, meaning “that which is remembered.” The astrology of ancient India draws a distinction between the knowledge that is directly transmitted orally from teacher to student, and

the knowledge that later was written down in books. The consciousness of ancient India acknowledges the often sharp distinctions between that which has been heard, and later, that which is remembered! About the 5th century AD many of the previous oral teachings were put into written

form. Many of India’s greatest astrologer-sages appeared in this period of time. Such personages as Parasara, Vaharamihira, Kalyana Varma, and Mantreswar are known by their written masterpieces on Vedic Astrology; Hora Shastra, Brihat Jataka, Saravali and the Phaladeepika are all still readily available today. In our time such prolific Indian authors as Dr.B.V. Raman, and most recently Bepin Behari, Dr. K.S. Charak, and K.N. Rao, have popularized Vedic astrologyinwesternculture. In the last decade there has been a resurgence of the Vedic sciences in western thought largely facilitated by the writings of Deepak Chopra. Dr. Chopra’s popularization of Aryurvedic medicine has gone a long way in opening the western mind to eastern systems of healing and psychology. Aryurveda in Sanskrit means, “the science of life.” Astrology in Sanskrit is known as Jyotish. Jyotish means, “the science of light.” Both these Vedic sciences are limbs of the Vedas. But astrology holds a special consideration. It is known as “the eye” of the Vedas, for Jyotish gives light, and where there is light one can see the

Fardeen Khan:

Esha Gupta signed opposite Emraan Hashmi for Jannat 2

Past seems to have come to haunt Fardeen Khan again. Today, a Mumbai court found him guilty of possessing banned drug (cocaine) in the 2001 case and he would be sentenced on November 2. Many feel that, on one hand, while this judgment has come as a blow to the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), while, on the other, its an amnesty for Fardeen, as he would now be punished for buying only 1 gm cocaine, instead of 9 gm (as was earlier reported). Readers maybe aware that, as per the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, the maximum punishment for possession of less than 2 gm drugs is five years, whereas the maximum punishment for possessing more than 2 gm of banned drugs is 10year imprisonment.

Finally guilty

Fardeen was arrested in May 2001 and 9 gm of cocaine was allegedly seized from him outside a suburban Mumbai restraint. The actor has pleaded that he was negotiating the purchase of one gram of cocaine from a drug peddler when the Narcotics Control Bureau arrested him.

Prachi Desai and Paoli Dam’s loss is Miss India International winner 2007, Esha Gupta’s gain. Esha Gupta’s looks and sex appeal have helped her get the lead role in Vishesh Films Jannat 2, a sequel to the 2008 super hit film Jannat.

Jannat 2 also stars Randeep Hooda and newcomer Imran Zahid. The music will be composed by Pritam. Esha will start shooting for the film in Delhi from October 7.

Mahesh Bhatt then recommended the Bengali actress Paoli Dam as she had the body language and the willingness to go all out for the film and met the requirements of the narrative. But Kunal seemed to be adamant on casting Esha right from the time he saw her as he felt she was perfect for the role. After a lot of discussions, Kunal managed to convince Mahesh Bhatt and coproducers Fox Star Studios. October 2011 Edition

The role in question is that of Emraan Hashmi’s wife in Jannat 2 and the films director Kunal Deshmukh wanted someone bold and sensual for the role. Prachi Desai was signed on for the role but the makers of the film apparently re-considered their decision to cast Prachi in the lead role, on the pretext that she was not as sensual as her role demanded her to be and Prachi too was not comfortable with her character and they parted ways amicably.

lifts a bike to silence the sceptics

he eight-pack abs that he has so laboriously built aren’t just showpieces to be flaunted through ripped shirt. Behind those abs, muscles, biceps and triceps, lies the primal force of a man determined to make a point. Ever since the news of John Abraham having lifted a bike in his new movie Force came out, sceptics have been raising their bushy brows over the boast. It was believed that the stunt was shot using cables that bore most of the bike’s weight. But at the promotion event of Force held recently, Johnny boy silenced his critics and put all doubts to dust by actually lifting a bike in front of everybody. The mediapersons were left with their jaws dropped as John heaved the 115 kg bike on his shoulder. There were even hushed whispers that it’s a stunt that other

action heroes like Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan can’t replicate. See John’s muscle power for yourself. John told reporters at the event: “The bike I picked up today was about 115 kg in weight. It was difficult. But as I weigh 88 kg, I can pick up anything.” For his role in the film, John Abraham worked out in the gym for eight months and gained 10 kg muscular mass. No wonder he has lifted a bike for a stunt scene.

Kareena Kapoor’s wax statue at Madame Tussauds will be unveiled on October 27 in Blackpool, UK. She will also flag off a global exhibition, where the statues of Bollywood stars will be taken to six major cities around the world to be exhibited, before they are brought back to Blackpool. Kareena’s wax statue was scheduled to be unveiled in the second week of October but the date got postponed after the sad demise of beau Saif Ali Khan’s father, cricketer Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi. Bebo was in no mood to attend any event after the catastrophe, she just wanted to be there for Saif and his family. She cancelled all her appointments and public appearances that were scheduled in the first week of October. She conveyed to the museum authorities that she could not take part in any form of celebration or attend any public function before Diwali. The museum authorities assured her that they were ready to wait. Everything fell in place and Kareena finalized October 27 as the date for unveiling her statue.

By now Mallika is a pro at doing item numbers. She has earlier danced to the tunes of ‘Maiya Maiya’ in Mani Ratnam’s Guru, ‘Kaa...Karuppanukkum’ in Kamal Hassan’s Dasavathaaram, ‘Razia’ in Thank You, ‘Shalu Ke Thumke’ in Bin Bulaye Baarati and ‘Jalebi Bai’ in Double Dhamaal. It is said that Mallika has been paid a whopping amount for the item number she is doing in Osthi. No wonder, she is called the most expensive item girl in the industry.

Kareena will be missing the Toronto premiere of her much awaited film Ra.One, as it falls

on the same day. But Shah Rukh Khan has no problems with that as he feels that her presence at the Dubai and London premieres will be more than enough. The unveiling of Bebo’s statue will kick-start a Bollywood exhibition, featuring statues of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan among others, to six countries including Hong Kong and Thailand.

Salman Khan

Given the cold climate that prevails in Ireland, Salman’s pain in the face has come back again to haunt him apparently. Sallu Bhai stated that though the surgery reduced his pain by about 60-70 percent, he can still feel it, and it is especially intense when he tries to talk. Salman underwent the surgery for Trigeminal Neuralgia, a problem that occurs in the facial nerve for some unknown reason and causes a lot of pain in the face and the jaw. Salman has stated that he would have to go back for a second round of the surgery in the next 2 or 3 months again. Bollywood. Celbden wishes Sallu Bhai a speedy recovery!

My Dublin detectives have informed me that Salman Khan, apparently, has assured his ex Katrina Kaif that he will take part in promoting her sister Isabel, who’s been trying to get a toehold in Bollywood. Isabel, apparently, hasn’t been given the same reception as her older sister. But Sallu’s help can send Isabel in two diametrically opposite directions. Not every Zarine Khan can become a Katrina... Aamir Khan

It’s been nearly two years, and we have not seen our perfectionist star Aamir Khan on-screen after his outstanding performance as ‘Rancho’ in the critically and commercially super-duper successful 3 idiots. But, we do know Aamir is right now filming for a cop flick with Reema Katgi who previously made ‘Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd.’ And if sources are to be believed, this cop flick, in which Aamir will be sporting a moustache as well, has been titled ‘Dhuan’. Aamir is planning to soon launch the first look of the film, and following in his good friend’s Salman’s path, Aamir wants a digital poster to be launched for Dhuan just like Ek Tha Tiger. Aamir Khan was so impressed with the idea of a digital poster from Yash Raj Films that he has asked the creative team of Dhuan to come up with a digital poster for his film as well. Aamir would be discussing the look of the poster with his creative team soon.

Salman Khan, who as we know, underwent a surgery for a facial nerve problem, took part in the shooting of ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ which is right now canning its shots in Dublin. For a moment, all seemed well that our Sallu Bhai returned to the sets and resumed work. But unfortunately, the relief from the surgery has not seemed to last for long.

‘Not over the top’

hough Kareena Kapoor has kept a low profile about her part in the Shah Rukh Khan production RA.One, her look in the film’s trailers and song ‘Chammak challo...’ have created quite a stir. But the actor, who plays the lead opposite the actorproducer of the film, insists that the idea was to maintain a simple yet fashionable and glamorous approach. “My look is chic, but minimal,” says Kapoor. Along with celebrity designer Manish Malhotra, Kareena made sure she didn’t go overboard with her look in the film. “Manish and I worked on something that’s fashion forward, but not over the top,” she says. Apparently Shah Rukh, who is said to be very particular about every detail of this ambitious project, made some inputs as well? “He gave us some useful feedback and the results are for everyone to see,” she says.

When it comes to setting fashion trends, the actor is among the frontrunners in the industry with films like Jab We Met (2007) opposite ex-beau Shahid Kapoor, Kambakht Ishq (2009) with Akshay Kumar, and the recent Salman Khan-starrer Bodyguard. Although audiences have

only seen fleeting glimpses of her look in RA.One in the two songs ‘Chammak challo...’ and ‘Criminal...’ sung by SenegaleseAmerican singer Akon, it has already generated considerable amount of appreciation. “People love my look for Chammak Challo and Criminal,” she says. www.indian-times.com.au

“I never take dressing or styling tips from Kareena as I being a strong and sexy man, know how to dress perfectly and look good,” Saif told reporters, in an interview. The 41-year-old actor, recently walked the ramp for designer Mandira Wirk at the ongoing Blenders Pride fashion tour. He

was the show stopper. Dressed in a black, sophisticated Band Gala suit with matching shoes, Saif looked very handsome and elegant.. Saif, who was looking extremely confident on the ramp, said he was perfectly fine with actress Priyanka Chopra turning down an offer of doing an item number for his upcoming movie “Agent Vinod”. “I am completely fine with that as most of the actresses do not want to share screen space with Bebo (Kareena Kapoor),” he said.

BAD NEWS GUYS!! Riya Sen refuses to shoot item song The tamasha that ensued on the sets of new director Ishraq Shah's Ek Bura Aadmi last week could make for a great soap opera. Apparently, Riya not only refused to shoot the item song with Arunoday Singh (who left for a month-long family event in the US), she also refused to interact with the media that was called to cover the shooting. The traumatized director relives the Tuesday trauma. "It was a nightmare. Riya Sen had signed on to do an item song. We had recorded a really zingy song 'Uchal Gayee Chamiya Kunwaron Ke Beech Mein'. Jayesh Pradhan who has done the choreography in Aarakshan was supposed to choreograph Riya's number. Everything was finalized, but then…." Apparently, Riya refused to show up for any rehearsals. Says the director, "She claimed she was unwell and October 2011 Edition

could not rehearse for the item song. Then she showed up for just one shot. I agreed since Arunoday had to leave. But then she refused to talk to the media. I'm a new director. This is all very new and embarrassing for me. My producer has suffered losses of at least Rs. 70-80 lakhs because of this. I don't know how I will shoot the song now. Arunoday is gone for a month. When he returns he immediately starts shooting for Madhur Bhandarkar's Heroine. My mentor Gulzar Saab had worked with the great Suchitra Sen. Look at what I had to go through on my birthday with her granddaughter!" Riya Sen, upset and ill as she is, had another story to tell. "This is all a publicity gimmick, as far as I can see. Ishraq Shah is a new director. I helped him out by agreeing to do the song. Besides I thought the song was nice and I could use it in my shows. According to the contract, we were supposed to shoot on 4th and

5th October. He requested me to come for the shoot on the 3rd because he said Arunoday was leaving the same night for the US. I agreed out of kindness, although I've been unwell. But at the shoot there was pure chaos. There was a very strange set of media persons at the shoot whom I had never seen before. They kept coming in front of the camera while we were shooting. The director asked me to speak to the media, I refused. Please understand I wasn't even supposed to shoot on Monday. Is this what I get for my kindness? Why use my name for publicity? We recently had Mr. Dev Anand being quoted against me. I shot for his Chargesheet three years ago. If he had a problem with me why didn't he speak earlier? Why at the time of release?" Last heard, Riya's mother Moon Moon Sen was trying for a patch up between her daughter and the director of Ek Bura Aadmi.

SRK gets fresh notice from Jagjit Singh passes away Maharashtra Costal Zone Management Authority

Jagjit Sing

On September 23, Jagjit Singh suffered brain hemorrhage after which he was immediately rushed to the Lilavati Hospital in suburban Bandra, where a life-saving surgery was performed on him. The 70-year-old ‘Ghazal King’ of India was then shifted to the ICU after undergoing emergency surgery and his condition became very critical.

Jagjit Singh was also known for modern approach and infusion of technology in the traditional art of ghazal singing. He sung in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Gujarati, Sindhi and Nepali languages. In 2006, he was presented the Padmashree Award from the Prime Minister. Jagjit Singh is survived by his wife Chitra Singh, with whom he had produced several record breaking albums. Big B posted the good news for his fans on his twitter page, “The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) honors me with a Doctorate on the 20th of October in Brisbane... deep gratitude.” Bachchan had turned down an honorary doctorate from an Australian university two years back as a mark of protest against racial attacks on Indian students. But now that the problem has eased out, he has finally decided to accept it. Big B is currently in Sydney shooting for Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby along with Leonardo Di Caprio, Tobey Maguire and Joel Egerton. He will go to Brisbane once he is done shooting for his first Hollywood film. “Yes after I finish the shoot for ‘The Great October 2011 Edition

Many asking if I shall now be called ‘Doctor’ or ‘Dr’ this is my 4th one...!! Been a while!!,” he added. The veteran, who recently turned 69, also added that even though he really appreciates the title of “Dr” conferred upon him, he never uses the title because he feels that the title belongs to only one Bachchan and that is his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan. “No never want to use Dr. as title for me. ‘Real Steel’ has a Rock ‘em Sock ‘em Weekend!

Disney’s Real Steel knocks out the competition with solid $27.3 million weekend. With the look and feel of a summer movie, the IMAX enhanced PG13 action sci-fi drama drew family audiences and action fans alike to the multiplex. The futuristic film stars Hugh Jackman and a scene-stealing Dakota Goyo as a father and son who work together to turn a discarded boxing robot into a true contender in the ring. IMAX showings accounted for $3.2 million or 12% of the weekend gross which is a new Sept./ Oct. record for the giant screen company. The Ides of March is an R-rated political drama from Sony starring George Clooney as a presidential candidate and Ryan Gosling as his hot shot media consultant. Based on the play by Beau Willimon the R-rated film tallied up enough votes with sophisticated audiences to take in $10.4 million this weekend for a debut in second place. Warner Bros.’ Dolphin Tale in 3-D enjoyed a major comeback last weekend by jumping from third place to first in a surprising show of strength. This weekend the PG-rated film

took advantage of its position as the predominant fall family film in the marketplace and caught around $9.2 million in family-friendly dollars as it nears $50 million in North America. Moneyball from Sony has continued to be a mid-week favorite earning around $1 million per day and slides right into its third weekend with $7.5 million. The Brad Pitt true baseball story has been playing catch with audiences since its debut and winds up with close to $50 million by Sunday night. After opening in fifth place, Summit Entertainment’s 50/50, enters its second weekend with momentum generated by solid word-of-mouth that has made it the second place movie during the mid-week box office contest. The R-rated dramatic comedy starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen as two friends coming to terms with a cancer diagnosis, has taken advantage of the positive buzz that has been building since the film hit theaters and earned $5.5 million this weekend against a small 36% drop.

In the latest issue of InStyle Australia, the reality star is asked why she televised her wedding to Kris Humphries and she gives a simple, totally believable answer: she did it for us, people. “We took weeks to decide if we were going to film it or not,” Kim (lies her giant ass off tells the magazine). “But I felt like my fans - everyone that has gone on this journey with me, seeing different relationships that I’ve been in would feel cheated if I didn’t film it. It was something that Kris and I were okay with, and the beauty of it is we get to edit it. It [will be] great to look back at that and see this time in our lives.”

Naya Rivera

Naya Rivera plays the most scandalous, sexual character on Glee. So it should come as no surprise that the actress behind Santana is posing in a provocative manner on the cover of the latest FHM issue. But still. Yowza! It’s okay to stare, fellas. She plays a high school student, but she’s nearly 25... Is Rivera actually similar to the cheerleader she portrays on the Fox hit? “Ha! Not at all,” the actress tells the magazine. “I’m really easygoing nowadays. Mind you, when I was 17 things were a little different.” Rivera adds that she had “such a blast” during the shoot, as this outfit - plus a few more layers - are akin to how Naya relaxed on a typical day: “At home I can mostly be found wearing cute T-shirts and jeans,” she says.

Sachin Tendulkar plays back-room role for Mumbai Indians Picture Source: PTI

Sachin Tendulkar finally and Nita Ambani

T

he Mumbai team management believes that their success in the Champions League had a lot to with the Sachin Tendulkar -influence.

Harbhajan added. Tendulkar had backed a number of youngsters in the IPL as well and the stand-in skipper felt that they were reaping the harvest of that.

The Master Blaster, recuperating from an injury, opted out of the tournament, but his presence in the Mumbai Indians nets and the dressing-room played a huge role, feels skipper Harbhajan Singh.

“We always wanted to give them chances and not make them feel left out. Even in the IPL, we had tried a lot of youngsters and in this tournament they really raised their performances. That augurs well for us in IPL 5,” he said.

“He was very involved in everything...He is great role model to have in the dressing room,” Harbhajan said, talking about Tendulkar’s role in the Mumbai Indians scheme of things. He has led Mumbai Indians in all four editions of the IPL and everyone close to him knows how dearly he wants to win that tournament.

Mumbai’s trainer Ramji Srinivasan, too, talked about the Little Master’s influence. “He was so involved in everything. You must have seen how keenly he was following every game...This wouldn’t have been possible without him,” Srinivasan said.

That hasn’t happened as yet, but this time around, he ensured that Mumbai Indians made the Champions League cut with some inspiring batting performances and from there, it was the turn of the Harbhajans and Pollards to take the team to the coveted title.

Even when the chips were down on Sunday with Mumbai Indians managing a total of 139, Tendulkar had a word with the boys which played a big role. “He told the boys not to give up at any cost and fight till the last moment...He has this great ability to motivate players and the younger lot really felt charged up. It was as if they wanted to do it for Tendulkar,” Srinivasan added.

“He was always supportive and helped guys like Ambati Rayudu and (Tirumalasetti) Suman in the dressing room. We owe a lot to him,”

Harbhajan also talked about the contribution of the coaching staff, who played a big role in the Mumbai Indians victory.

CLT20 match upto UEFA Champions League?

S

o another Twenty20 tournament in the form of Champions League T20 is done and dusted with and within days another international fixture for the Indian fans is waiting to happen (England in India ODI series). There was a lot of scepticism around the Champions League Twenty20 right from the beginning and questions were being raised on whether cricket fans would turn up for the event especially on the backdrop of a depressing India’s tour of England. More so after the World Cup, IPL was held immediately and there was lot of hue and cry over the crunch schedules. India went to West Indies in between then landed in England then flew back to India for the Champions League and now England is waiting. If we suppose one calendar year to a day, The Indian team would have worked round the clock, i.e. 24 hours a day and as cricket fans or die hard (Indian) cricket fans one would still be watching a 24x7 news channel at a stretch. Not to forget other international fixtures where the resurgent young Australian setup got the better of a below average Sri Lankan team. Also Shoaib Malik, now better known as Tennis sensation (what kind of sensation !!!) Sania Mirza’s husband made it back to the Pakistan squad. Pakistan blanked a spirited Zimbabwe in ODIs and T20s in the most unconvincing fashion.

But as Indian cricket fan one is bound to miss all that. Coming back to Champions League T20, like IPL, it was clearly stuffed into the cricketing schedule like paneer being stuffed into every possible North Indian cuisine. The BCCI has been at the centre of it all and as an arrogant brat they have shown all their detractors the finger and have went about their business as usual. It was evident that the 20 day tournament (how ironical for a Twenty20 competition!!!) failed to pull the amount of crowd an IPL match or an International fixture would be able to do. Just as a causal observation, entire sections of the stadiums where the games were played in were empty and even the finals was no difference. The fact that Sunil Gavaskar and the widely respected Harsha Bhogle repeatedly emphasised the sporting spirit of Chennai crowd in the finals was quite

misleading to put it rather politely. The qualifying stages which featured the teams from New Zealand (Auckland Aces) and England (Leicestershire Lions) were played out to near empty stadiums. So, has the Champions League T20 come up as a cropper? As marketing proposition not all, and surprisingly even in the cricketing front it has done well. Even though it’s Twenty20, CLT20 was able to produce some high quality matches and equally stupendous performances. David Warners’s back to back centuries, RCB’s back to back over 200 run chases. Trinidad and Tobago’s nerve wreaking last ball matches. Malinga’s exploits with the bat, Tait’s five-for, Dan Harris’s ton, class of Virat Kohli and Callum Feguson and the dream final of Mumbai and RCB were definitely the highlights of CLT20.

We’ll show what we’re at home, says Raina

Raina

Despite losing the ODI series 3-0 in England, India’s Suresh Raina is hopeful that a young team will learn from the experience and give the visiting English team a stiff competition. He said “We are very excited. We have done well in the last year or so. We have a young team and the players performed well though we lost the series in England. At home, it’s going to be a great experience. We will show England what we are at home”. www.indian-times.com.au

Sahara picks $100m stake in Force India

Sahara pumps $100 million into the previously Vijay Mallya-owned team

ahara India Pariwar, the biggest private spender on Indian sports, entered motorsports on Wednesday by picking up stake in the F1 team, Force India. Sahara pumped $100 million into the previously Vijay Mallya-owned team to come on board as co-owners along with Mallya and the Michiel Mol family. The additional funds mean new shares will be issued for the ‘Sahara Force India’ team with Sahara getting 42.5%, the same as Mallya, while Mol’s share will be 15%. Sahara India head Subrata Roy will be the new chairman of the team while Mallya will continue as team principal and managing director. “When I first approached Sahara it was only for the purpose of sponsorship. But Roy wanted to co-own the team and that’s how we came to this agreement,” Mallya said on Wednesday. “The entire investment will be into the team and none

of the existing shareholders are taking any money out. I started this team on a very tight budget and in the supercompetitive F1 environment this investment will surely help in the progress of the team,” he added. Roy said, “Our goal is to reach to the top as soon as possible. In a very short time, Force India has risen to sixth position on the Constructors’ table and we’ll take them forward.”

However, the Sahara India supremo remained noncommittal on whether an Indian driver would be inducted into Force India. “For us, the priority has to be the team and then the Indian drivers. We can’t deny reality and can’t get emotional about picking drivers for the team,” Roy said, hinting that Narain Karthikeyan or Karun Chandhok were still not good enough for the team.

Force India was formed in 2007 when a consortium, led by liquor baron Mallya, and Dutch entrepreneur Mol bought the loss-making Spyker team, reportedly for about for 90 million euros. With Mallya’s other business ventures bleeding money rapidly-his low-cost airline Kingfisher Red was discontinued recentlyForce India’s progress was taking a beating. “The money will be used to upgrade things like the wind tunnel and simulator. I haven’t given up hope for a fifth place finish this year. There are still a few races left and anything can happen,” Mallya said. Sahara’s entry into F1 sees the second team overhaul in the sport this year. In March, Spanish investment company Thessen Capital bought a controlling stake in Hispania Racing Team. The chassis name for the car though will remain Force India though. The change in chassis name has to be agreed by the sport’s governing body FIA and the other teams as well.

“Everyone goes through tough times. Harbhajan’s done a terrific job so far. He tries hard and thrives on a challenge. You can’t get 400 wickets by being ordinary, so there’s no doubting his ability. He can bounce back against West Indies and then perform well in Australia, because we need him. It’s Team India which needs Bhajji. Without him the team is poorer because when he bowls well, India are more competitive. “

MS Dhoni

He was the man with the Midas touch. Everything that India skipper MS Dhoni did, guaranteed success. The wicketkeeper-batsman has had an exceptionally good run as skipper - whether it was for India or the Chennai Super Kings and it reached a high with the World Cup triumph in April this year. He followed it up by helping the Super Kings retain their IPL title. But all that seems to be in the distant past as Dhoni’s men were humiliated during the recent England tour, losing both the Test and ODI series. To make matters worse for Dhoni, the Super Kings fizzled out in the Champions League Twenty20. But the unexpected loss may have done a world of good to Dhoni. The never-ending cricket circus has taken a toll on the players and Dhoni has been no exception. “...That’s the only blessing in disguise, a few days off, not that we have earned it, but a bit of rest will help us,” was how Dhoni reacted after Super Kings loss to NSW earlier this month. The ‘bit of rest’ seems to have created a new desire in the captain to recover his form. On Wednesday, Dhoni led from the front as the Indian team had its first practice session at the RJIC Stadium ahead of the first ODI against England on Friday. After a bit of stretching and a game of football, Dhoni donned his gloves and had an extended session of catching practice. While the others went back to the cool of the dressing room, Dhoni worked hard at his keeping (which has been a let-down in the recent past). His Super Kings teammate Suresh Raina was the first to enter the nets while his colleagues were still busy playing football. The southpaw practiced horizontal bat shots. Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane too had extended hit in the nets. But it was Dhoni who was the keener of the lot as he had an extended batting session. Dhoni’s body language exuded purpose and determination. In between whacking the ball, Dhoni had a few quick chats with coach Duncan Fletcher, who has a fair knowledge of the English players. On the other hand, the England team, who had scored a massive 253-run win over a hapless Hyderabad XI on Tuesday night, had a day off. Later in the evening, Dhoni and England skipper Alastair Cook unveiled the gold-plated silver trophy for the five-match series.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Diabetes (Madhumeha/ Prameha) Dr. C.R.S. Kumar

I

n today’s stressful modern living, incidence of Diabetes is definitely increasing. Every now and then we come across patients of Diabetes seeking Ayurvedic treatment and advice. Ayurveda is the ‘Way of Life’ which addresses all the problems under the category of Lifestyle Diseases with time-tested evidence based methodologies. According to Charaka, Diabetes is a metabolic kapha (Humor) type of disorder in which diminished functioning of Agni (Digestive Fire) leads to a tendency toward high blood sugar. (Ayurveda recognizes 24 forms of the disease commonly classified under Prameha - 4 are due to Vata dosha, 6 are due to Pitta dosha, and 10 are caused by Kapha dosha. The main causes of these diseases are fat, urine, and Kapha buildups due to foods, liquids, lifestyle and others.) In Diabetes, whatever sugar we take is generally broken down into simple sugar called ‘glucose’ in our body. This glucose circulates within the blood and enters into the cells with the help of insulin. Insulin is a hormone, made within the Beta-cells of the Pancreas. Due to sedentary life style and genetic predisposition, the beta cells are not able to make enough insulin, which is a key factor for glucose to enter into the cells. Due to lack of insulin glucose keeps on circulating within the blood. This is called Diabetes. According to Ayurveda, Diabetes is a metabolic kapha type of disorder in which diminished functioning of Agni (Digestive Fire) leads to a tendency

toward high blood sugar. Ayurvedic treats Diabetes using a multiprong approach. First, they address diet modification, eliminating sugar and simple carbohydrates, and emphasizing complex carbohydrates. Protein is limited, since excessive intake can damage the kidneys. Fat is also limited because there is often a deficiency of pancreatic enzymes, making fat digestion difficult. Since many Diabetics have auto antibodies, a cleansing program is instituted.

Panchakarma is typically used for this purpose. This begins with herbal massages and an herbal steam sauna, followed by fasting to cleanse the body. This is followed by an herbal purge for the liver, pancreas, and spleen. Colon therapy is next, first to cleanse the digestive tract and then to reconstitute the system. Ayurvedic uses several herbal preparations for diabetics. Exercise is another cornerstone of Ayurvedic treatment of diabetes. Yoga and

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT breathing exercises are traditionally used. Ayurveda treats the “whole person” and enables better successful management of diabetes by taking care about their psycho-social aspects faced by persons with diabetes too. Ayurveda is the ‘Way of Life’ which addresses all the problems under the category of Lifestyle Diseases with time-tested methodologies. Some Ayurvedic tips to control Diabetes: • Diet - Avoid sugar in any form-rice, potato, bananas, yoghurt, cereals & fruits contain high percentage of sugar content. Do away with fatty stuff. Go for the following low-calorie, low-fat alkaline diet of high quality natural foods. Emphasis should be on raw vegetables & herbs as they play a part in stimulating the pancreas and enhancing insulin production. • Exercise - Shun a sedentary lifestyle. Exercise helps in burning fat, reducing stress and reducing weight. These are key ingredients of diabetes control. Cycling, swimming, jogging etc are helpful to fight diabetes. • Yoga - Daily yoga routine of breathing exercises, meditation and poses enhance digestion and help the pancreas and liver function more normally, regulating blood sugar levels. Cobra (Bhujang Asana) Locust (Shalabh Asana) Bow (Dhanur Asana) are few ( Postures) asanas that help diabetics. • Quit Smoking - if you smoke your body also is unable to respond to insulin. Smoking while having diabetes

Learn some ‘Kamasutra’ if you can Make a to-do list We’re not saying stick post-its on the ceiling but you and your partner can set a rough timetable, right? Once a month, once a week, whenever suits you - it is important to make to-do list of styles, fantasies - whatever’s fun.

Have more foreplay Women still complain of insufficient foreplay when it comes to sex. Here’s a fact: women who get at least 20 minutes of foreplay are 80 per cent more likely to have an orgasm. Don’t let your lover be one in the remaining lot. dd the funk Sex has become a mechanical activity for many stressed couples. There’s a way out. One of you - whoever’s less stressed - can change the way you make love (at least for one night, for starters). Suggestions: Forget the ice cubes cliche, get a bottle of wine instead; play raunchy Hindi numbers, encourage dirty chatter in bed... we hope you get the drift?

G

iven that the world’s oldest guide on love, sex and spirituality is our home production, we Indians should be most adept at the subject. Not the case with you? Well, the book will never go out of fashion and relevance. Plus, its sex chapters have often been plucked out and circulated on the internet, books and on DVDs. Apart from positions, it has some useful advice on behaviour, kissing and touching as well. So, turn over a new leaf tonight! Revisit old moves If you’ve stopped making certain moves in bed because they’ve bothered you or your partner, find out exactly why it occurs and get over it. Keep in mind, though, the same goes for him/her. Also, if you think you’re too ‘grown up’ for some moves you used to make with your college flame, a total recall would be good fun!

Go on an adventurous date A weekend trip to an exotic resort can just get the fun back into your sex. Sometimes, a break in monotony is just what your brain needs to get energised. Take to mountain-climbing, paragliding or simply walk down the beach. Excitement needn’t always be expensive. Overcome your fears Is there anything you or your mate want to try but breaks into a cold sweat attempting it? There is nothing as liberating as being terrified of something and overcoming it. Break one of your taboos Similarly, if you’ve imposed any rules or taboos on yourself because of fear, lack of knowledge or social pressure, break it. Communicate... ... and more regularly. It is perhaps the most crucial resolution for your relationship. It seems basic, but when was the last time you discussed sex with him/her? Speaking up is one of the most important ingredients of a healthy sex life.

Sex-Guide According to your age

Our sexual behaviour varies at different times in our lives. Sex guru Tracey Cox in her bestselling book, ‘Sextasy’ reveals the sexual urges and traits of lovers according to their age... 20-something Most guys just can’t stop dreaming about sex every couple of hours. At this age, girls are usually rebellious in their sexual imaginations. They share same-sex fantasies or want to try out bi-sexuality. A 2006 study of nearly 2000 people discovered that 76 per cent of women who slept with women reached orgasm (for women with men, the figure stands at 50 per cent). The 20s are the time when young boys and girls are most experimental in their sexual positions. One in 10 people

claims Tracey Cox have had a threesome in their early twenties. Also, people in this age group have most likely visited a strip joint or a lapdancing club - with their friends or their better half. 30 something The 30s are a time to experiment, almost all 30-somethings claim to have had sex outdoors. Unlike the teens when making out was the most common form of sexual experimentation, most 30 somethings prefer having sex somewhere semi-public like the beach, in the garden or on a park bench in the darkness. There’s something wildly erotic about these sexapades! Also, high on the 30 something popularity chart are having sex in the shower

Do you suffer from bipolar disorder?

Clinical psychologist, Seema Hingorany says that while we all have our ups and downs, and off days, if you’re suffering from bipolar disorder, these peaks and valleys are more severe. “Also known as manic depression, it causes shifts in a person’s mood, energy, and ability to function. The symptoms can result in damaged relationships, difficulty in working or going to school. There are periods of normal mood as well, but left untreated, people with bipolar continue to experience these shifts in mood,” says Hingorany. Clinical psychologist Chetna Duggal says, “During an episode, a person experiences disturbances in mood and activity levels and between two episodes is able to function normally with no disturbances. When the person experiences feelings

October 2011 Edition

of extreme happiness and elevation along with increased energy levels it is termed as a manic episode (in a milder form termed as hypomania) and when the person experiences low mood and decreased energy the episode is termed as a depressive episode. In cases where there is a mix or quick shift between mania, hypomania and depression it is termed a mixed episode,” says Duggal. How does it affect one? During a manic episode, a person might impulsively quit a job, charge up huge amounts on credit cards, or feel rested after sleeping two hours. During a depressive episode, the same person might be too tired to get out of bed and full of self-loathing and hopelessness over being unemployed and in debt. What causes Bipolar cannot be said with certainty. The

or in the bath tub. Kinky pleasures also rate high as most 30 plus couples claim to be giving in to their fantasies of bondage, blindfolds and spanking on a weekend of debauchery. This is also the time when women are most likely to befriend gay male pals. Straight women love gay men; gay men love straight women. Swedish research is confirming just why the two groups get along so famously - they both have symmetrical brains. Straight men and lesbians have asymmetrical brain hemispheres. The 30s also mark the arrival of children in a married couple’s life, so the sex drive naturally dwindles. But, Cox points out that during pregnancy, couples have sex disorder is said to be caused by an interaction of biological, genetic and psychosocial factors. Stress, family history and neurochemical factors are some of the causes. Symptoms Clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, Varkha Chulani says the manic phase can last for days, often months. “Symptoms include agitation, irritation, delusions of grandeur, little need for sleep, elevated mood, increased energy, reckless behaviour, sexual promiscuity, tendency to be easily distracted and spending sprees. Relationships become problematic as does professional ability. The person becomes erratic, undependable and indulges in destructive behaviour. They have difficulty concentrating, suffer from weight loss due to low appetite or weight gain due to over eating, listlessness, thoughts of death or suicide. There is withdrawal from friends, family and activities that were once enjoyed,” says Varkha. Treatment Mood stabilisers are the first option. Antipsychotic drugs are also used with antianxiety and anti-depressants. Electro-convulsive Therapy (ECT) may be used to treat the manic or depressive phase if drugs have little effect. Psychotherapy for patient and caregivers helps managing the disorder, reducing stress and preventing future episodes. It’s important to educate yourself about the illness, communicate with doctors and therapists, have a strong support system, make healthy lifestyle choices, and stick to your treatment plan.

four to five times a month. Most put the brakes on their sex lives for about seven weeks after delivery, but four months later are back to four or five times of sex a month. Cox says six months after delivery, the average couple goes back to having sex three to five times a month. But incase you don’t fit the bill, remember getting disheartened ain’t gonna help. Remember it’s just a temporary period, so continue touching and cuddling and if your baby robs you of chances to have sex, indulge in quickies. Most women says Cox in her book experience higher orgasm rates. Ninety per cent of women past 30 regularly experience orgasm, compared to just 23 per cent of younger women.

40 something Men in their 40s are more likely to experience erection problems. Also, this is the age when maximum number of men tend to be unfaithful. Also, men are more compelled in their 40s to watch more porn or indulge in sex chats. Women on the other hand get sexually very demanding, often being attracted to younger men. If you thought the 40s were about low libido, think again, while 40-somethings maybe having less sex than ever, the thrust has shifted from how many times in a week to an emphasis on better quality. You are more sure of your sexual needs in this age group and thus more likely to insist on passion play as opposed to a mere making out session.

Sad, Unhappy Children - Is it just a phase they go through?

ust until a few years back, moodiness amongst children and teenagers was considered normal and a part of the growing up process. Children would have bad times or moods, but it was a general assumption that they would grow out of them in their own time without any outside assistance. Sometimes, even harsher measures were adopted to quickly correct the “attention seeking child”. However, in recent years this perception has changed and an increasing number of children and adolescents are being treated for depression. Children as young as two are being prescribed anti-depressants, with alarming increases in numbers. Australian Federal Health Department data reveals that prescribing rates of controversial drugs have risen from 852 in 2007-08 to 1264 in 2009-10. Deaths and adverse reactions have also been linked to antidepressants in young children. The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists said it was disturbing that anti-depressants were being prescribed for children at all.

now deemed as abnormal and worthy of treatment. In conventional medicine, “Depression” is the “catch all” diagnosis for unhappiness, sadness and moodiness.

A CHANGED SOCIETY: Our society has changed dramatically in the last 50 years. Permissiveness and freedom have turned people into pleasure seeking consumers. The joint family system has also broken down, and parents spend less time with children and divorces are on the rise. Out of all these some interesting changes have occurred. Children have now more access to the adult world, like computers, internet, mobile phones etc. Boundaries between adults and children have blurred and children are now considered as small adults. Because of this, moodiness and various behaviours that were otherwise considered normal, are

The following descriptions of a few of these remedies may give some indication of how Homeopathy may help to ease the burden of unhappiness in children. Shy and Scared

Adult diagnosis methods and now, also anti depressant medication are being frequently applied to children.

When a child or teenager seems excessively shy and unhappy there are a number of remedies that come to mind.

ROLE OF HOMEOPATHY IN SADNESS AND MOODINESS:

Johnnie, a young four year-old was brought in because of concern that he seemed unhappy, was easily moved to tears and was shy beyond measure. He would hide when people came to the house and he had a trick of pulling his jumper or tee-shirt over his head, so that strangers couldn’t see his face.

In Homeopathy, the individual’s experience of life is looked at. It is this which determines the treatment that is given. The emotions are of paramount importance in selecting a remedy and because of this, emotional states respond very well to the correctly selected remedy in Homeopathy. “The emotions are of paramount importance in selecting a remedy and, because of this, emotional states respond very well to the correctly selected remedy in Homeopathy”. In my practice I have found that many remedies help unhappy, moody and sad children and youngsters. It is important to look at the pattern of unhappiness in context with all symptoms (whole picture) presented. Very often the child is brought because of some other reason, the unhappiness or moodiness giving colour or tone to the picture.

They were also concerned that he seemed slow to learn things and that he would burst into tears if pressed too much. Apart from that he was troubled with recurrent sore throats which were always associated with large neck glands. This is very much the picture of a remedy called Baryta Carb. These youngsters are shy, tearful, fearful, slow in many ways and often respond to infections by developing large glands. This remedy in 30c potency every month transformed Johnnie into a much happier young lad and markedly reduced his attacks of tonsillitis.

Snappy and Concerned Mark was a thin, black haired 16 year-old, was sullen, very flat in his mood and snappy towards his parent. He was concerned about a crop of large warts on both hands. They were unsightly and bled at times.Over-the-counter preparations had not worked and he worried about them. He was also forever worrying about his health. Mark did not believe that anything can be done to improve his state. Here we have moodiness, snappiness, pessimism and fear over health, all key features of Nitric acid. And it proved to be the right remedy for Mark, over a couple of months clearing the warts and helping his outlook and attitude. Homeopathy has much to offer when youngsters feel unhappy or sad. By matching up the remedy to their emotional pattern, Homeopathy is the ideal and completely safe, long term solution for calming the troubled waters of the mind. Learning to love your body is much more effective than exercising alone to help you quit smoking and to lose the extra kilos that come with it, a new research has suggested. Body image treatment often includes mirror exercises, in which women look at their reflections and instead of criticizing body parts, they focus on the aspects of their appearance that they admire. The benefits of body image therapy came to light when researchers started out as an investigation into how exercise could impact smoking cessation in women ages 18 to 24. First, researchers talked to 43 young women and learned that weight gain and body image were major concerns in quitting smoking.

The researchers then decided to add a body image component in the study. “The body image component was useful, because 44 percent of participants [had] said they would go back to smoking if they gained weight,” ABC News quoted study author Melissa Napolitano, PhD, clinical psychologist at the Center for Obesity Research and Education at Temple University in Philadelphia, as saying. The researchers found that ten percent more women in the body image class stuck with quitting smoking after 1 week and lost more weight than the exercise group, as well. “Using something like body image skills training can be helpful for smoking cessation, because it provides skills and tools to help people feel better about themselves and not turn to smoking for weight control,” Napolitano said.
