COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY MUSIC LEARNING CENTER This design attempts to answer the need of the music communities proliferating in Yogyakarta, which is more space and the ability to collaborate among communities. The challenge is to design a new typology of space which could connect music performers, communities, and learners, and also creating new spaces for the music communities to express themselves by creating impromptu performance spaces.

ISSUES FACED BY MUSIC COMMUNITIES OF YOGYAKARTA

Music communities proliferating around Yoygakarta, and lack decent space to practice, perform, or just to hang out and gather. A number of communities became inactive or died because of this very reason. If it continues, the development of music communities around Yogyakarta would perish.

APPROACH

The approach is to design a collaborative center, focusing primarily on visual connection between music rooms. Placing performance spaces on the design will further ensure communities to thrive.

VISUAL APPROACH TO COLLABORATION

Visibility studies conducted on different alternatives of music rooms configurations and opening placements, to create the most optimal visual connection between each room, opening probabilities of collaboration

CONCEPTUAL MASSING

The open performance space is located on the 3rd floor, giving music students place to perform. Concert hall is used as a commercial performance venue. The restaurant gives visitors a chance to eat in the restaurant while listening to local music performance. The entrance gives space for a larger outdoor performance such as rock bands.

Building as Performance Space The building itself serves as multiple performance spaces on functions such as entrance, and leftover space over the backstage, fully serving the community.

The structure of the building is emphasized to serve as a metaphor for the stuctural aspect of music, mimicking the lines on a musical sheet. The curvy lines of the roof and facade shows the fluidity of music, mimicking the legato lines of a musical piece.

The design process is started with programming using the Graphisoft ArchiCAD software. The BIM software is used to ease and optimize the process of modelling.


BAITUL

MUTTAQIN

MOSQUE

OF

CIMENYAN

The project was a commission from the Baitul Muttaqin Islamic Foundation to design a public mosque for the region of Cimenyan, which is located on the hills of northern Bandung, Indonesia. I was given the task to be the project coordinator, thus designing from the concept to design development. The project is now awaiting confirmation from the foundation.

SITE PROFILE

ANALYSIS

Qibla The Qibla (muslim praying direction) is 90ยบ, or perpendicular to the site. This makes it more simple to design, as there is no need to tilt the building

Riverside The site is located behind a slope to a local river. The design near the river has to be free from construction obstructing the water infiltration

Main road A relatively busy main road is traversing on the front of the site, giving a challenge on reducing the noise pollution for the mosque

Community The site is located in the center of the local community, giving an easy access to the mosque


The site is located between a slope pointing to the river below, and a relativey busy main road

The ground which is intended to contain the mosque is lowered 3 meters to ensure the noise pollution does not interfere and disturb the “jamaah� of the prayers.

Structural columns are placed in the position and dimensions which does not disturb the Jamaah. The column distance is 3,9m for a clean shaf (jamaah line) which needs a clean 1,2m width

East Elevation

The mosque is given 2 floors to assure the local community to be accommodated during the weekly friday prayers. With a floor area of 400sqm, this mosque can accommodate 550 jamaahs.

The roof of the mosque is tilted towards the river. This results in the rain water to fall to the slope on to the river below.

The Baitul Muttaqin Mosque of Cimenyan is using bricks from local craftsman, and is exposed to be the icon for Cimenyan.

MS. RETNO’S TRADITIONAL HOUSE The brief is to design a modern yet traditional looking Joglo that functions as a homestay and wedding venue in Sleman, Yogyakarta. Because of the limited site, the Joglo has to be compressed into half Joglo-half homestay without losing the traditional quality. It was then enveloped with a modern steel canopy that functions as an extension.

MS. TYAS HOUSE This design is the design from the BIM Course held by Universitas Gadjah Mada with Autodesk Authorized Training Center, based on a real project by the participant. In this project, Ms. Tyas design brief is to design a modern house that feels cozy and warm.
