Abhijit Mukherjee Director Dr. Abhijit Mukherjee is the Director of Thapar University. He is a foremost researcher and teacher of mechanics of materials. He specialises in new materials of construction and their application in structural rehabilitation and retrofits. He has partnered with researchers from all over the world and has been decorated with the highest engineering and sciences fellowships including that of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Life on campus

T

hapar University is nestled in the 250-acre campus of the Thapar Technology Campus. The entire infrastructure, including various schools, laboratories, housing colonies, residential halls for students, eateries and sports facilities are conveniently located within the campus. However, the most striking feature of the campus is that over two-thirds of the area comprises of pristine greenery. The entry of motor vehicles is restricted; the air is unpolluted and clean. Neat flowerbeds, row after row of seedbeds, manicured lawns and innumerable trees dominate the landscape.


50 years and more

F

ifty years of existence is a significant milestone for any academic institution. In 2006, Thapar University celebrated this event with a renewed vow to deliver the highest standards of learning. Support to students Deserving and needy students are provided with a range of scholarships and fee waivers. This includes the Alumnus Ward Scholarship, GATE Scholarship and Teaching Assistantship, Merit Scholarships and other scholarships mandated by the government. Fee concessions and loan facilities are provided to a limited number of students. In addition, the university bears the costs of a group insurance policy covering all students on campus.


International Affiliations

hapar University has a number of prestigious affiliations with leading world universities. These include:

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, U.S.A.. Thapar University and Virginia Tech are jointly establishing a research laboratory for Materials Testing, Engineering and Research (MATTER) University of Waterloo, Canada. Thapar University is working with this university to introduce CAD tools to Indian artisans and craftsmen. University of Florida, Gainesville, U.S.A. New Jersey Institute of Technology, U.S.A. Student Life

W

ell appointed residence halls, excellent sports facilities, a diverse student community, and a friendly campus situated in the heart of a vibrant city ‌ Thapar University is a great place for students. Intellectually stimulating competitions and talent showcasing events are held regularly. Technology festival Aranya and cultural event Saturnalia attract large participation from students of technical institutions from all over India. The literary and cultural societies organise events for music, dance, drama, film and the performing arts. Giving back to society is an important value at TU and the campus community contributes time and efforts to social welfare activities in education, health, environment and skills training. Students have formed a self help group – Pratigya Society – where school dropouts are taught to make greeting cards which are sold at TU events. Pratigya has now branched out, and members offer advice and assistance on a wide range of issues, including agricultural, health, hygiene and conservation.


Research

T

hapar University encourages individuals with unbridled curiosity to indulge in some intelligent risk taking. And to them TU offers world class infrastructure and a sound knowledge base to carry out some of the most complex research projects. Research, along with education, form the creative mission of Thapar University. Funded by the Government and the industry, these research projects are not merely intended to stimulate technological innovation. Utilisation of research results, transfer of technology and setting up of technologydriven businesses form the logical end to the numerous research projects that run concurrently at TU. The university has several centres of excellence that accommodate students and researchers from various disciplines.

Thapar University's Centre for Relevance and Excellence (CORE) for research on biotechnology Thapar Centre for Industrial Research and Development, which is the only aboratory in Punjab that is affiliated to the Punjab Pollution Control Board Science and Technology Entrepreneurs Park (STEP), which translates ideas into business realities. STEP also organises training programmes for potential entrepreneurs, and propagates environment-friendly technologies and products amongst farmers.

Prominent research areas include biosensors and optical sensors, anti-microbial drug discovery, network surveillance, ferroelectric liquid crystals, wave propagation techniques and smart materials, and effect of burning crop residue on ambient air and human health. Some of the most respected and renowned Indian and international companies have been associated with the university for research as well as faculty exchange programmes. These include Intel, Microsoft, Wipro, and Sun, to name a few. The university also has collaborations with various government organisations, such as the Department of Information Technology, Government of India; Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh; Institute for Himalayan Biotechnology, Palampur; and Indian Institute of Petroleum, Dehradun.


Placement

T

he students' employment prospects are greatly improved with helpful advice from course representatives and careers counsellors. Direct interface with industry representatives and TU's close links with industry mean that our graduates find jobs relevant to their qualification or opt for higher studies within six months of graduation. Career counsellors organise workshops and careers fairs, and facilitate one-to-one support and dissemination of vacancy information. TU is closely affiliated to the US$ 3 bn Avantha Group and its flagship companies, BILT and Crompton Greaves – India's largest paper and power T&D equipment companies respectively. Leading Indian and international companies regularly recruit directly from TU.


Management School

T

he L M Thapar School of Management is named after one of India's leading industrialists, the late Mr. Lalit Mohan Thapar. The school offers uniquely designed programmes on technology management, blending technology and management concepts. Students have the option to opt for any of three degrees: MBA (IT-Net), MBA (Manufacturing) and MBA (Energy Management). The BE-MBA programme provides dual academic certification.

Thapar University students conceptualised, designed, built and drove a racing car that won the first prize for Best Endeavour at the Silverstone Racing Track in Northamptonshire, U.K. This global award, a first for any Indian team, was won against stiff competition from over seventy participating university teams.
