A Letter from the President Thank you for joining us at the XXVII ADDYs 2018! It’s a night when the best of the best come out to celebrate both triumph and struggle. When we celebrate personal bests and amazing achievements of advertising & marketing excellence. Whether your sport is curling or copywriting, photography or figure skating, art direction or ice hockey, we recognize that defeat only makes us better and fight harder to achieve our goals. This year, we remind ourselves that the essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well. These are not my words but the words Olympians live and compete by. Because for both the Olympics and the ADDYs, to be there is to achieve excellence. Whether you won silver or gold, whether you achieved personal bests or ADDY Olympic records, applaud yourself for what you have accomplished. Thank you to all of the XXVII ADDY sponsors, contributors, Olympic committee members and volunteers. Thank you to Truth Collective last year’s Best in Show winner for lighting the torch and keeping it lit. Congratulations to all the winners and those who competed!

Silver Achievement Award Winners
LAUREN DIXON & MIKE SCHWABL
A dollar and a dream. In this case, $22. That’s how much Lauren Dixon had in her checking account when the single mother decided to start her own agency. She quickly landed three accounts, then landed a partner in business— and in life. She had placed an ad for a photographer, writer and producer to help create a real estate show. It was answered by a photojournalist who convinced her he could handle all three jobs. Persuasive fellow, that guy. Mike Schwabl signed on as one of her first employees. Their working relationship clicked so well, they soon pursued a different kind of merger altogether. Before long, their agency landed on Rochester Business Journal’s Top 100 list and has since climbed to the tippy top. Along with arresting campaigns for the likes of The Strong National Museum of Play and Kennedy Space Center, the agency produced the famous Horses on Parade campaign, raising more than $1 million for 116 local charities. Community service is constant theme. Both have served on numerous community boards. Lauren leads United Way’s Women United, while Mike has served 10+ years on the board for Daystar, a home for medically fragile children. And they’ve co-chaired countless campaigns and events to raise funds and awareness for worthy nonprofits. Their biggest accomplishment? Easy: The agency culture. Way before it was “a thing,” Dixon Schwabl was nurturing a work environment that’s positive, fulfilling, even fun. (Ice Cream Thursdays!) The agency has garnered a long list of workplace awards, among them one of Great Place to Work Institute’s Best Workplaces for 13 years (#1 twice), and big-time props from Fortune magazine, Ad Age (#5 in 2016) and PR News. What. A. Pair. Along with a ton of moxie and seemingly endless energy, Lauren possesses an uncanny knack for hiring and leading great employees. Mike’s the creative big thinker, and brings to the table a sharp analytical mind, a fascination with technology and a passion to always do the right thing. Together, they make a fantastic team. And one heck of an agency. Bravo!

XXVII ADDYS #OlympicAF
Feel the burn. We are all bearers of the ADDY torch. It’s that fire blazing within us. It stokes us to push our limits. Makes us go harder than we thought possible. It drives us to break walls. Fall down and get up again. It’s what sparks greatness in others. It’s how we accomplish incredible feats of creativity. And in all its glory, it reminds us that while victory is sweet, how you get there is truly what’s worthy of gold.

After hearing Nelson’s story, she made a decision. She would do with him what she had done with all her foster boys over the previous 17 years: take him into her home, and put him in Cub Scouts. They would be his family. Since Nelson’s enrollment, Scouting has challenged him, connected him, and kept him on the right path. He plays soccer, camps with friends. Runs, listens, and laughs. And for the first time, he’s chosen his own direction. He will take the Trail to Eagle, by the guiding light of his family.
KIP PALMER
Troop 177 alumni, Rochester, NY
He shoulders the weight of accountability. Kip Palmer got his greatest piece of business advice in his first year of scouting. It was sixteen words: “A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.” Otherwise known as the Scout Law. While others simply memorized the words, Kip internalized them, using them to weigh decisions as he made his way up the scouting ranks. Soon after earning his Eagle, Kip realized that following the Scout Law could earn him more than just merit badges. His Eagle mentor, Lou Langie, saw something in the way he conducted himself, and offered him the chance to become a youth representative of the Scouting Board of Directors. Just like that, integrity had led him to a leadership opportunity. Over 50 years later, scouting still makes a daily impact on Kip’s life. As the CEO of his family’s 167-year old food services business, he’s constantly faced with difficult business decisions that affect thousands of people. And when they arise, he reflects on only three things: his family, his faith and the Scout Law. Or, as he calls it, his moral compass.

Data management tools to track incoming and outgoing bikes. Data sensitive stickers that track bike ownership, bike repair information from R Community Bikes, and dates the bike was returned to R Community Bikes for repairs. Essentially a living history for the bike. Volunteers can log into the site and have their phones react to printed memory chips on stickers indicating the stored information. This can help identify stolen bikes in the field as well as sending bikes out to new owners if they have been refurbished.

#OlympicAF is a way of life.
Shaun White once said, “I think the best way to become the best is to just have fun.” And Ryan Lochte once tweeted, “u can’t always walk a straight line, especially if the line is crooked.”While they were probably talking about two different things, as we train for next year, remember these words from our fellow Olympians. Fully embrace the process that gets to the kind of work you see in this book—even if the course is hard, confusing, and totally twisted. But fun. That’s what it should always be.
