Radhika Wadhwa Thesis 1. Fall 2011. 11/21/11 Upload Faculty: Julia Wargaski
Moving forward with the idea of paCern, color, culture, nature. I focused on one piece of nature which influenced me in a lot of different ways. I chose to work on the aspect of the lotus. Lotus is represented in so many ways today and everyone knows a different meaning to it. Using the different meanings behind it: meditaKon, peace, spirituality, something so beauKful that comes out of a dirty lake. Using the lotus and the aspect of meditaKon and finding peace within oneself, I started to design for an immersive shoppable experience that leads people to stop and think about their lives. At first I wanted to design an event: where people who choose to walk through it, have to make decisions of choosing paths, decisions of what to leave behind and what to carry forward or wish for. And this path would end by a space that sells products that are influenced by this experience of self discovery. My work was also influenced hugely by the wriKngs of Rumi. In this event I wanted to design two three different secKons. The first secKon being about sufi dance, the second about leaving some memories behind and starKng afresh. And the third to be about buying products influenced by the lotus and the aspect of memories.
Lotus in different forms: stain glass, jewelry, architecture, bio mimicry etc.
Created this paCern inspired by the lotus.
AQer going through this process I am trying to focus on the aspect of creaKng a paCern soluKon which will be co‐branded with nature. Using elements from nature to create a paCern library which people can apply on different products. How can that whole paCern or part of the paCern be used effecKvely in different ways.( this goes toward the aspect of being part of community but sKll being able to stand alone and have a presence.) As an experimentaKon with paCerns, besides geVng the previous lotus screen paCern laser cut I played with the Spirograph and thread art on screens
AQer geVng feedback from various people a lot of quesKons have been raised, regarding the concept I started with and now eventually where I have reached. In specific: Who are the users? How can I apply these paCerns to different objects? How do the paCerns I create used by the users? Will there be color combinaKons? How are those influenced? What about the paCerns themselves?‐ what influences me to create them? Are these paCern going to be influenced by my idea/concept of the event earlier? If so then what parts of it will I be using? By the end of the semester I hope to achieve some sort of paCern guide/ paCern color guide and answer the quesKons, these and many more raised by my peers and everyone else who I share my project with.
