SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors. The Racine Family YMCA Strong Communities Agenda provides a range of practices dedicated to increasing the strength and effectiveness of community life and improving local conditions, especially for youth in disadvantaged situations.

YOUNG LEADERS ACADEMY SCHOOL ACHIEVERS

An after school leadership program for 2nd - 5th graders. YLA offers homework assistance, tutoring, leadership group sessions and activities. Programming is currently held at 5 different sites: Fratt Elementary School, Giese Elementary School, SC Johnson Elementary School, Wadewitz Elementary School & 21st Century Preparatory School Monday through Thursday.

YOUNG ACHIEVERS

A program for 6th - 8th graders designed to prepare them for the academic and social rigors of high school and beyond. The program combines the self-discipline of the Young Leaders Academy program, with the independence of Teen Achievers. Young Achievers allows students to participate according to their interests, and provides students with the opportunity to enhance their academic progress, increase existing skills and pursue their interests. Participation in the program will result in increased school attendance and development of positive peer relationships. Program hours are Monday through Thursday 4:00pm-6:30pm.

YMCA TEEN ACHIEVERS

A teen program for 7th -12th graders that offer participants college readiness, college tours, collaboration with local businesses, and career exploration workshops. Achievers also receive a free YMCA membership.

YLA SUMMER SESSION

75 youth will participate in an interactive six-week summer session at Carthage College in Kenosha, WI. Qualified applicants must be incoming students grades 3rd-8th. Youth will attend academic classes in the mornings and participate in fun and educational activities in the afternoons. Program operates Monday – Thursday from 8:30am-3:30pm, with weekly field trips/community service projects on Fridays. Enrollment begins February 16, 2015. Fee must be paid in full by May 31, 2015. Cost: $100 YLA Members/$150 General Public Deposit: $25 per child reserves space Extended Care flat rate: 6:30am-8:30am & 3:30pm-6:00pm $20 per child, per week (All fees are non-refundable)

P.R.E.P.

The Personal Responsibility Education Program is focused on preventing unintended teen pregnancies and STI’s while also incorporating important adult preparation subjects such as building healthy relationships, learning about financial literacy, and focusing on educational attainment. Although the program is open to all, PREP targets African American and Latino youth because of the discrepancies in their rates of unintended pregnancies and contractions of STI’s compared to their white counterparts.

SALSA SABOR Y SALUD

The first national program of its kind designed by the National Latino Children’s Institute (NLCI) to encourage healthy lifestyles among Latino families. The eight-session program assists Hispanic families with children 12 and under to make healthy choices for eating and incorporating activities involving the whole family into their daily lives.

COLLEGE READINESS CENTER

The YMCA College Readiness Center supports local youth involved in the Teen Achiever Program by providing them with a safe, supervised and social environment which promotes skills for a healthy lifestyle, academic excellence, and career exploration. This spacious atmosphere allows 7th-12th graders to attend Teen Achiever meetings, work on homework, research colleges/scholarships and freely choose their activities. The College Readiness Center will be open from 6:30pm-8:30pm, Monday-Thursday. It is located in the lower level of the Lakefront Y Branch building, and is complete with a computer lab, pool tables, ping pong table, foosball table, video game consoles and cable television.
