You ask the Senior question

We find the Savvy answer Voluntourism: A growing alternative travel option among retirees  Dear Savvy Senior, Can you write a column on volunteer vacations? My husband and I are both in our 60’s and are interested in taking a service-oriented “altruisticâ€? vacation this summer but could use some help. Retired Travelers Dear Retired, If you’re looking to do more on your vacation than relax in the sun or go sightseeing, volunteer service vacations – also known as voluntourism – are a great alternative and a growing trend among retirees. Here’s what you should know. Voluntourism Nowadays, you don’t need to join the Peace Corps to travel to exotic destinations and serve others. Many organizations today offer short-term volunteer projects overseas and in the U.S., lasting anywhere from a few days to a few months. Common program themes include teaching English, working with children and teens, building and repairing homes and schools, and assisting with community or environmental projects. In addition, volunteer vacations also give travelers the opportunity to experience the culture more fully and connect with the local people – much different than your run-of-the-mill sightseeing vacation.  Most volunteer vacation groups accept singles, couples and families and you don’t need to speak a foreign language. Costs typically range from around $700 to $1,500 a week, not including transportation to the country your site is in. Fees typically cover pre-trip orientation information, room and board, on-site training, ground transportation once you get there, the services of a project leader, and a contribution to the local community that covers material and services related to the project. And, if the organization running your trip is a nonprofit, the cost of your trip, including airfare, is probably tax deductible. Where to Look While there are dozens of organizations that offer volunteer vacations, here are some good ones that attract a lot of retirees. • Earthwatch Institute (earthwatch.org, 800-776-0188): A global nonprofit that offers one and two-week expeditions that focus on environmental conservation and field research projects all over the world.    • Globe Aware (globeaware.org, 877-588-4562): Offers one-week volunteer vacations in 15 different countries. • Global Volunteers (globalvolunteers.org, 800-4871074): Offers a wide variety of two and three-week service programs in 18 countries, including the U.S. • Road Scholar (roadscholar.org, 800-454-5768): Formally known as Elderhostel, they offer a wide variety of volunteer service programs both in the U.S. and abroad usually to the 50-plus traveler. • Habitat for Humanity (habitat.org, 800-422-4828): Offers a variety of house-building trips through its Global Village Program and RV Care-A-Vanners program. How to Choose With so many different volunteer vacations to choose from, selecting one can be difficult. To help you decide, you need to think specifically about what you want. Ask yourself: Where you want to go and for how long? What types of work are you interested in doing? What kind of living situation and accommodations do you want? Do you want to volunteer alone or with a group? Do you want a rural or urban placement? Also consider your age and health. Are you up to the task, or do you have any special needs that will need to be met?   Once you figure out what you want and spot a few volunteer vacations that interest you, ask the organization to send you information that describes the accommodations, the fees and what they cover including their refund policy, the work schedule and work details, and anything else you have questions about. Also, get a list of previous volunteers and call them. Don’t sign up with a group that won’t supply you with this information. Other Tips If you’re volunteering outside the U.S. find out if any vaccinations and/or preventative medications are recommended or required at cdc.gov/travel. Also, check to see if your health insurer provides coverage outside the U.S. Many health policies (including Medicare) don’t pay for medical expenses outside the border. If you’re not covered, you should consider purchasing a policy (see quotewright.com or insuremytrip.com) that includes emergency evacuation coverage.Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Seniorâ€? book.Today show and author of “The Savvy Seniorâ€? book.

Shop Local, Employ Local a benefit to many teens Erdman's County Market has been featured on the Shop Local page for a program they started in the late 70s that benefits churches and non-profit organizations. Church organizations and non-profits receive one half of 1% of the total Erdman's cash register receipts submitted. Another important aspect of shopping local is the fact Erdman's is one of the largest employers in the community and has provided thousands of part-time jobs for high school and college students over the years. Store manager Mike Langan, who has been at Erdman's 33 years, said there was a record high 17 K-M senior graduates working at the store this year. In all, there were 21 recent graduates, including one college grad and high school graduates from Byron and Triton. In all Erdman's has 45-50 students working at the store part time. "The store has always hired a lot of kids. We couldn't run this place without them," said Langan. "They are an important part of our business." Shopping local enables employers like Erdman's to hire additional staff and that provides more job opportunities for young people in the community. Langan said he has two large cabinets with files of past employees. A high percentage of them were students and he believes they easily number in the thousands. This is another way of how shopping locally can strengthen our community. "We are fortunate to have so many teens who want to work here," added Langan. These 2012 K-M graduates have at least one thing in common. All 17 are employed part-time at Erdman's County Market in Kasson. In all Erdman's had a record high 21 graduates, including one college grad and seniors from Triton and Byron. Photo courtesy of Cheryl Bauer.

Have you ever stopped to think how many times the dollar you spend at the grocery store, the drug store, the market or hardware store changes hands in your community over a period of time? You'd probably be greatly amazed at the number of times the "buck" is passed around locally before someone drags it out of town. Early Saturday morning a dollar was spent at the grocery store for a carton of milk, bread and breakfast food. After a short stay in the grocer's till the dollar's next stop was the paycheck of one of the clerks. The clerk traded the dollar to the drug store for some items. The druggist used the dollar and some others for payment on his taxes at the bank. The dollar did not stay at the bank very long before it started

moving again-this time to cash a milk check. Best available statistics tell us a dollar will change hands as many as 20 times a day. If that were the case the dollar accounted for $20 worth of trade volume and put $20 worth of service or goods into people's hands. If 100 people had one dollar in the next hour and all decided to spend the dollar out of town instead of here, it would matter a good bit. If we do not worry about the single dollars and figure ways of keeping them working for the community then we'll never be able to keep the $100 at home either. “A good slogan to paste on the wall may be-Don't pass the buck to a big city merchants-keep it at work at home.” Ralph W. Walker, DCI publisher

Brandon Schmoll of Dodge Center showed his 1956 John Deere 50 in the Olde Tyme Days Antique Tractor Show. Brandon had a plaque at the front of the tractor that described what it was and at the bottom read, "In memory of Bud Zabel". Bud gave the tractor to his grandson Brandon and he restored it. Brandon said his favorite part of restoring the tractor was painting it so that it looked like new again. Photo by Randy Carlsen.

business directory PREFERRED HEATING & COOLING CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS IN BUSINESS The old saying, "Time flies when you're having fun" certainly fits for Tim Stenzel of Mantorville who started his own business, Preferred Heating & Cooling five years ago. Two weeks ago Tim and his wife Audrey and employees Tim Borge and Jason Smith hosted an open house at Daniel's Northwoods Lounge to celebrate five years in business. Tim said he does not regret making the move and has grown to have two vans on the road. Tim Stenzel had worked in the heating and cooling business 20-plus years and did service work for 18 before deciding to go out on his own. He figured it made more sense to go on an after hours call for his own business rather than for someone else. You could say he "preferred" to be on call in his own business. Doing service work during a difficult economy has been a big part of helping make the business successful and grow. He offers service and maintenance of heating, ventilation and air conditioning for residential and light commercial systems. He also does new construction for HVAC (heating, ventilation & air conditioning) and can install energy-efficient equipment eligible for energy rebates. They use TEMPSTAR heating and cooling products. With the hot summer days and nights Tim recommends that property owners with central air conditioning have the units cleaned and checked. A cleaning can make a difference in how much more efficiently a unit runs, especially when it runs day and night during periods of hot weather. Tim has been in the management and sales end of the business, but most of his experience is in service where he has had continuous classroom training over the years plus years of hands-on experience. He is EPA certified in refrigeration and attends annual manufacturer meetings on new technology and updates on HVAC equipment.

What Tim enjoyed most as an employee and now as owner is serving the customer, taking care of their needs and seeing they are satisfied with the work. "Working with and for the customer is something I have always liked about this business," said Tim. Time certainly does fly and Tim would like to see the next five years go just as well. Tim also contends they have many good customers who have helped their business succeed. Having a repeat customer speaks for itself.

Phone: 507.272.0499 email: preferred@kmtel.com

John's SuperValu Foods sold to Sunshine Foods John Tidemann started in the grocery business as a carry out boy in a SuperValu grocery store in Albert Lea, the town where he and his wife Rita grew up. Forty-eight years later John, 62, and Rita, 60, will try and shift gears and settle into retirement after leaving their seven day a week duties in the grocery business. John's SuperValu Foods has been sold to Sunshine Foods, a partnership that owns and operates 12 stores in Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota. Partner Vern Bennett said plans are to do a complete remodel and expand the store by some 6,000 square feet. In 2011 Sunshine Foods purchased grocery stores in Chatfield and Spring Valley. John and Rita had a plan for retirement in place and when Sunshine Foods approached them in the fall of 2011, they made the decision. Forty eight years in the grocery business was not John Tidemann's intent either. He initially wanted to go to school for forestry because of his love for hunting and the outdoors. Plans changed.

When John started as a carry out boy in Albert Lea he said, Jack, the store manager was a good influence on him and his future in the grocery business. "He told me the harder I worked the more hours I would get," said John. "That really hit home with me." The "work hard" comment motivated John to eventually move into management for Red Owl. He worked in management at all three Red Owl stores in Rochester, including the one that opened in the Apache Mall. "Moving around to the different stores helped me deal with people and learn to work with employees," said John. John bought a store in Cresco, Iowa with a partner and had that Red Owl for two years. Then came the opportunity on Main Street in Dodge Center when he bought the Red Owl and the store name changed to John's Red Owl.

John has been in business here 34 years, the last 18 at the new store, at 20 Airport Drive South in Dodge Center. They operated the new store for seven years before the four lane highway was built which made their store location shift to a secondary road (Old Hwy. 14) . At the time John said he knew once the highway relocated it would affect his business. Not knowing when that would happen, the Tiedmann's decided they had to make the move out of the downtown area. After 34 years of business in Dodge Center, John and Rita insist the biggest change has been the technology, which has been a good thing. "The way people eat has changed. They buy more food that is already prepared," said Rita. John said people are also more price conscious in a tough economy and they look for healthier foods.

Five years ago John was critically injured in a hunting accident when he fell out of a tree. That turned out to be quite a setback. He is lucky to have survived the accident. Being one of the hardest workers and leading by example, was all changed by the accident. "When you own a small business you work and live it 24 hours, seven days a week," said John. When John and Rita go home at night the work goes with them. Rita will do the payroll and bookkeeping and John works on the next ad.

Rita and John Tidemann, married 20 years, and owners of John's SuperValu Foods in Dodge Center, will turn the keys to the store over to Vern Bennett of Sunshine Foods next week.

As grocery store owners, John and Rita said they are thankful for a great deal. They say the community has been good to them. "When you're here seven days a week you get to meet good customers," said Rita. The employees have also been like part of the family. "We're simply the leaders," said John. "It's the 22-30 employees who make this business go." At the age of 15 when John started as a bag boy frozen pizza was introduced to the freezer section of the grocery store. Now John and Rita will introduce themselves to retirement. They plan to spend more time at their second home on a lake in Wisconsin and with their seven children, 17 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren they have between them. Looking ahead with anticipation Rita said, "It will be a big change for us."
