LOGAN MARKET

LOGAN MARKET IS A FARMER’S MARKET DESIGNED FOR LOGAN SQUARE, AN ART DISTRICT OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO, IL WITH STRONG TIES TO ITS HISTORY. THE DESIGN INCLUDES MARKET SPACE, A PERFORMANCE SPACE, AND A CAFE. THE PROJECT PRESERVES THE EXISTING MURAL WALL BORDERING THE SITE AND IS SPATIALLY DEFINED BY A SERIES OF FREE, OBJECTLIKE WALLS, SERVING AS A BACKDROP TO THE PROGRAM THAT COMMUNITY ARTISTS WILL BE INVITED TO INTERACT WITH. THE GRIDDED PLAN GOVERNING THE LOOSE DEFINITION OF SPACES, IS ROTATED SLIGHTLY TO FAVOR ORIENTATION TO THE EXISTING MURAL WALL AND TO ACCOMMODATE THE PIVOTED END OF THE SITE. ARTICULATING THE GRID, THE ROOF CONSISTS OF A STACKED TWO LAYERS OF DEEP BEAMS. WHILE THE LOWER, TRANSVERSE BEAMS PROMOTE A SENSE OF CONTINUITY ALONG THE CEILING, THE UPPER LAYER OF LONGITUDINAL BEAMS BEGIN TO VARY ALONG THE GRID, PRESCRIBING DIFFERENT LIGHTING EFFECTS TO DIFFERENT PROGRAMMATIC AREAS.

CHICAGO MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE

THE DESIGN OF THE CHICAGO MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE IS BASED IN THE IDEA OF ARCHITECTURE AS A SUPPORTING ROLE IN MUSEUM DESIGN, ABOVE ALL ELSE IN SERVICE OF WHAT IS BEING DISPLAYED.

THE SINKING OF THE GALLERIES ALLOWS THE UPPER FLOORS OF THE MUSEUM CONTAINING SUPPORTING PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENTS TO BE LIGHT-FILLED WITHOUT HARMING THE WORK ON DISPLAY. THIS SCHEME ALSO ALLOWS THE BUILDING TO MAINTAIN A SENSITIVE HEIGHT TO ITS CONTEXT. EVEN MORE INDIRECT LIGHT IS ALLOWED INTO THE LOWER SPACES BY THE STRATEGIC RECESSING OF FLOOR PLATES. THE LOOSE DEFINITION OF SPACES FACILITATES A FLUIDITY OF MOVEMENT, VISUALLY AND PHYSICALLY, BETWEEN GALLERIES, ENABLING THE WORK TO BE VIEWED PROGRESSIVELY, RATHER THAN COMPARTMENTALIZED.

ALVIN BOYARSKY LIBRARY

THE ALVIN BOYARSKY LIBRARY IS A SMALL ADAPTIVE REUSE PROJECT IN LONDON, ENGLAND. IT IS A HISTORICAL TOWNHOUSE THAT THE ARCHITECTURAL ASSOCIATION HAS DESIGNATED TO HOUSE THE PRIVATE BOOK COLLECTIONS OF ZAHA HADID AND BOYARSKY HIMSELF. THE DESIGN HANDLES THE TALL, THIN PROPORTIONS BY CELEBRATING THE READING ROOM IN A DOUBLE-HEIGHT SPACE BEING SHOWERED IN DIFFUSED LIGHT FROM THE FILTERING SKYLIGHT ABOVE. THE SPACES ARE DEFINED BY TWO FOLDING PLANES. THE FIRST WRAPS TO CONTAIN THE BOOK SHELVING, PROTECTING THEM FROM LIGHT, AND THE SECOND SLIPS DOWN THE EXISTING WALL TO FOLD INTO A FLOOR PLANE FOR THE READING AREA. BECAUSE THE PLANES DO NOT MEET EACH OTHER, THE RESULTING GAP ALLOWS LIGHT TO PENETRATE TO THE GROUND FLOOR, ALLUDING TO WHAT’S ABOVE.

KENDALL-WHITTIER BRANCH LIBRARY 3

THE KENDALL-WHITTIER BRANCH LIBRARY IS A DESIGN FOR A BRANCH OF THE MAIN LIBRARY IN TULSA, OK RIGHT WHERE A RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD MEETS THE OLD INDUSTRIAL FABRIC OF THE CITY. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES MANY ELEMENTS PREVALENT IN THE CONTEMPORARY LIBRARY BUILDING TYPE, SUCH AS A MEDIA CENTER, CAFE, MAKER SPACE, AND, OF COURSE, READING AREAS. THE LARGE AMOUNT OF NECESSARY PROGRAM REQUIRED THE DESIGN TO BUILD UPWARDS WHILE REMAINING SENSITIVE TO THE LOW-RISE SURROUNDING CONTEXT.

2

THE LIBRARY’S MAIN ENTRANCE IS POROUS TO THE RESIDENTIAL SIDE OF THE SITE, WHILE A STRONGER EDGE MEETS THE URBAN CONTEXT. THE PRIMARY SPACE OF THE LIBRARY IS A TRIPLE HEIGHT, LIGHT-FILLED SPACE THAT INCLUDES MORE COLLABORATIVE PROGRAM. IT IS DEFINED BY TWO INTERVENTIONS THAT CAN BE SEEN INTERRUPTING THE FACADE-- ONE BEING THE SHIFTED FLOOR PLATE GESTURING OUT TO THE ADJACENT BUILDINGS.
