Get a furniture feel

Integrate the kitchen with the rest of the room in an open-plan scheme. Display areas are a simple way to do this, giving a relaxed living feel. Here, illuminated box shelves link a cooking area to the dining/seating space.

Keep everything at hand, then hide it away when it’s not needed. In this kitchen, glass shelving houses crockery and ingredients, plus the cooker hood and power sockets. Draw down the doors and the whole lot vanishes. ■ Valcucine’s Logica system costs

Thematic displays – where you gather several of the same item but in different styles – make a big impact with minimal effort. Choose something that you love, from antique china to retro signs and mount on the wall or arrange on a shelf or dresser.

Creating a todie-for display ■ Pick a theme that matches the style

of your kitchen. For example, if your scheme has an industrial feel, make sure the items on display echo it. ■ Resist the temptation to overfill shelves – it looks fussy and prevents pieces from being properly viewed. Place bigger items in the centre, then group similar things together. ■ Ensure items tone with the main colour in your room. However, they don’t have to be the same shade. ■ Use mirrors and lights for an eyecatching display. Place mirrors behind or under shelving to reflect pieces and install lights on a separate circuit so they can be used to set a mood. 60

Highlight with a bright hue

All-timber kitchens look great with some colour. Pick an accent shade and use it in a variety of different ways to create impact. Here, the wall paint has been continued down to the ledge to give the items displayed the appearance of floating, while coordinating and contrasting accessories stand out and recess.
