ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

RACHELLE ANN SALAZAR

2016-2019

Hi! My name is Rachelle and I am looking forward to expand my skills and interest on fluid and geometric architecture. Through my educational and professional experience, I envisioned that people are like water. We tend to adapt quickly into the environment than objects. Therefore, architecture has allowed me to be adventurous rather than confined and I strive to decode ways on considering spatial exploration such as undertaking geometrical studies and generating it into a beautiful space that sparks curiosity and emotions. e: rachelle.a.salazar@gmail.com

5TH YEAR PROJECT

AUTONOMOUS NONSTANDARD SPACE UEL - UNIT 6 Autonomy focuses on autonomous sustainability, where the system is a self regulated, self sustained by organising a food production of gardening and a beekeeping centre. By having a centre for postal care, the service users can help sustain the centre by creating a mixture of theraputic health care and food centre. This proposal will bring people together and create a community. and at the same time gives a responsibility to the users as it gives them a way forward to get back into the society.

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

During communism, a vast amount of vacancies were produced as a result of central planning and shortage of economy. A lot of ancient buildings were neglected due to massive development of residential and industrial zone. The current political economic system has been producing vacancies through real estate speculation and over building.

GEOMETRICAL STUDY

This piece of interior furniture by Zaha Hadid Architects acts as a shelf for Neil Barrett Flagship Store in Tokyo, Japan. Besides its brand’s minimalism, its other purpose allow the customers to circulate around the store. Later on the project, I will begin to highlight intriguing qualities found within this object and exert them to my own iterations.

SURFACE STUDY

vOLUME VS SURFACE

The interior furniture consist of several compelling qualities. My aim is to design heterogenous spaces in which I would like to recreate a similar approach to this piece of furniture but rather investigating not only its qualities, but also using it to define its architectural capabilities.

MASSING MODEL STRUCTURE

This diagram explores how I’ve taken one chunk from the original piece and aggregated similar pieces together to create a building. This building fits into a 40m x 25m bounding box.

ARTICULATION AND COLUMN STRUCTURE

The articulation ripple effect wraps around the building, which creates a continuous flow all over the atrium space. This also continues on to every floor level. The column creates a ribbon like structure which also wraps around the building just like the articulation. This is considered to be part of the articulation rather than another object of the building. A series of shots of the interior building explaining the experiences you will receive at certain angles.

TOKYO COMPETITION

IRELAND HOUSE, TOKYO: CAPTURING THE SPIRIT OF IRELAND ALAN POWER ARCHITECTS It is the client’s intention to create an exemplary, forward looking piece of architecture, one that reflects the spirit of Ireland, its history and its innovative design abilities. at the same time, it must intergrate with, and enhance its location in the centre of Tokyo, offering a welcoming and exciting presence in the street scene. these aspirations have informed our design. The public presence of the building on the street is defined by a curving granite entrance screen that rises three storeys above pavement level. The curving form offers a welcoming embrace for visitors, drawing them into the building. The granite screen acts as a metaphorical transition from one land to another. It creates a sense of entering Ireland itself, and its history. It is simultaneously an abstract sculpture, a fragment of Irish archaeology, and a poetic resonance with time.

DESIGN APPROACH - AN IRISH LANDSCAPE IN THE MIDDLE OF TOKYO

The interior furniture consist of several compelling qualities. My aim is to design heterogenous spaces in which I would like to recreate a similar approach to this piece of furniture but rather investigating not only its qualities, but also using it to define its architectural capabilities. High quality materials will be used throughout, both internally and externallly. Irish granite, terracotta, bronze filigree screens, and Japanese hardwood will predominate.

The building will be a column and slab concrete frame structure. This creates the mass for the building, supporting a balancing strategy of heating and cooling across seasons of the year. Designing an efficient thermal envelope will greatly reduce the need for space heating and cooling as heat transmittance through the thermal elements is reduced. Low air permeability rates will also reduce heating and cooling energy demand by reducing the volume of air that can penetrate the building. the organisation of the building seeks to create an open connection with the streetscape and the city. As well as being located on alively street in central Tokyo, the site will have fine views of the park being created as part of the large new development to the East.
