Jobs passed away in October 2011. In their first full year without the tech legend, they managed to pull off releasing the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini. The devices were both important, but by no means should be called revolutionary.

The Google Earth is a first for the American market in the Allroad.

Making The Most Of Everyday If you’re reading this, the world did NOT end and all of the rumors we have been hearing about the Mayan Apocalypse well, didn’t come true.

For the last few years we have all been watching TV shows, listening to commercials, and reading news stories about how on December 21, 2012 the world was going to end. I’ve heard we were going to be saved by aliens, blown to bits by asteroids, and even the world was going to spin the other direction on its axis, throwing off all weather patterns.

You know, if the Mayans had known the world was going to end, don’t you think they would have made a survival plan of some kind? If I knew my world was coming to an end I would sure as heck make every effort to survive. So now that we’ve established that we’ll all be around for a while longer, let’s talk about making the most of every day. I know, I know, it’s cheesy. But come on. Why wouldn’t you want to live life to the fullest so that on the day that the world does decide to implode, you’ll know that you lived your life with no regrets, and you’ll be ready to go out with a bang. (No pun intended) So. Go on an adventure. Go kind of crazy. Yes, there are limits. Every day, do one thing that’s just for you, even if it’s going for a run or locking yourself in your room to catch up on a TV show. Everyone needs a little time to themselves.

whatever you do as a group. As much as anyone needs alone time, hanging out with your best friends makes the day totally worth it. What have we learned? Well, the Mayans didn’t get their calendars together, you need time to yourself and with a group of friends, and, well, everyday needs to have something new. Who knows when the next apocalypse will happen. As they say in the movie UP, “Adventure is out there! Go find it. How many of you thought the world was going to end? Send me your apocalypse preparations and I’ll put them up next week! Cheers to another year! Courtney

Top Technical Accessories For Your Car (BPT) - Whether it’s traveling during the holidays or commuting to and from work, Americans spend a lot of time in their vehicles - almost 540 hours a year according to a Roland Berger study. With so much time spent behind the wheel, it’s worth it to invest in the top gadgets to make your ride safer and more comfortable. These accessories provide you with some of the latest safety features and allow you to bring all the comforts of home along with you on your ride. Convenient help: A dead battery at any time of the year can be a real downer, especially if you are unable to find a person willing to give you a jump start. PEAK JumpStarters allow you to restart car batteries without the need of another car. This rechargeable and portable system features a low charge alert that sounds when the battery life is getting low. Just plug the system into the wall or your car’s cigarette lighter outlet to recharge. Keep it in your car so it’s always available in time of emergency.

Tailgating supplies: If you’re driving over to the stadium for a picnic before the game, or are in the middle of the mountains and ready for a bite to eat while admiring the scenery, chilling drinks or warming up meals at the drop of a dime is a real benefit. The PEAK 12 volt Can Cooler/Warmer is just the gadget to help you enjoy your tailgating party with minimal fuss. It cools soda cans and sandwiches, or heats up leftovers like soup and chili, and plugs directly into the car’s cigarette lighter socket for your meal on-the-go. These and other products can be found nationwide at retailers such as AutoZone, Advance Auto Parts, Pep Boys, and O’Reilly Auto Parts. A lot of time is spent on the road, and these accessories can make your trip safer and more comfortable. Visit PeakAuto.com for more information on the products you need to power your life.

A handy charging station: Cellphones, tablets, video games and even laptop computers are all portable and popular accessories for passengers when traveling, but all require charging stations. And everyone knows that road trips with dead video game or e-reader batteries are not fun. The PEAK 150 Watt Cup Inverter is perfect for recharging electronics in the car. It fits into the cup holder, so you won’t have bulky items in the front of the car, and two AC outlets and one USB plug-in are available for charging multiple electronics at once. Wi-Fi on the road: Once you have the mobile charger, put your electronics to use with a Mobile Internet Router. Passengers can surf the Internet, check emails and play on-line games with a simple plug-in. The coverage area is wide enough to supply a connection to the entire family.

New Year’s Traditions Some traditional New Year foods are thought to bring luck. Many cultures believe that anything in the shape of a ring is good luck, because it symbolizes “coming full circle” completing a year’s cycle. For that reason, the Dutch believe that eating donuts on New Year’s Day will bring good fortune. • The Tournament of Roses Parade dates back to 1886. In that year, members of the Valley Hunt Club decorated their carriages with flowers. It celebrated the ripening of the orange crop in California. • The early Babylonian’s most popular resolution was to return borrowed farm equipment. • The Babylonian new year celebration lasted for eleven days. Each day had its own particular mode of celebration, but it is safe to say that modern New Year’s Eve festivities pale in comparison. • The beginning of spring is a logical time to start a new year. After all, it is the season of rebirth, of planting new crops and of blossoming. January 1, on the other hand, has no astronomical nor agricultural significance. It is purely arbitrary. • Many parts of the U.S. celebrate the new year by consuming black-eyed peas. These legumes are typically accompanied by either hog jowls or ham. Black-eyed peas and other legumes have been considered good luck in many cultures. The hog, and thus its meat, is considered lucky because it symbolizes prosperity. • These days apple bobbing is associated with Halloween, but in Celtic societies they also play this game of trying to grab an apple in one’s teeth at New Year. Bonfires are also associated with New Year, the town Biggar in Scotland have a reputation for a particularly warm fire at Hogmanay.

Mars Rover Curiosity Finds Martian ‘Flower’ and Snake-Like Rock

New photos of Mars from NASA’s Curiosity rover have sparked a buzz of discussion over an odd formation that some have dubbed a “flower” embedded in a Martian rock. The rover has also found a snake-like rock formation winding across the Red Planet’s surface. The so-called Mars “flower” photo was snapped on Dec. 19 by the microscopeat the end of Curiosity’s robotic arm. At the lower left of the image is a strange, apparently transparent formation that some Internet forum users on the website claimed looked much like a flower, according to NBCNews.com’s photoblog. NASA posted a raw, unprocessed version of the photo online on the Curiosity rover’s mission website overseen by the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. Internet forum readers on the website Above Top Secret christened

the object a flower, according to NBCNews.com’s Alan Boyle. Curiosity has seen bits of clear plastic (pieces of the rover itself) on the surface of Mars before, but NASA officials said that doesn’t appear to be the case this time. JPL spokesman Guy Webster told NBCNews. com that the object “appears to be part of the rock, not debris from the spacecraft.” [Face on Mars & More Martian Illusions (Photos)]

On Friday (Jan. 4), NASA also unveiled a new panorama of Curiosity’s current location on Mars, a shallow depression called YellowknifeBayinside the vast Gale Crater. The image is a mosaic of photos that is dominated by a sinewy, snake-like rock winding across its center.

NASA scientists have dubbed the rock “Snake River.” It is a thin curving line of dark rock that rises above the flatter rocks of its surroundings, making it an intriguing target for Curiosity’s instruments, JPL officials said. “It’s one piece of the puzzle,” rover mission project scientist John Grotzinger, of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said in a statement. “It has a crosscutting relationship to the surrounding rock and appears to have formed after the deposition of the layer that it transects.”

Top 5 Hot Food Trends For 2013 (BPT) - Grab your fork and knife. Amateur and professional foodies alike highly anticipate the newest food trends, and 2013 will not disappoint. Throughout the country, restaurants and home cooks are utilizing their creativity to make food that satisfies the palate and leaves a lasting impression. Here are the top trends you’ll see emerge this year:

Trend 1: Wine experimentation When you visit a restaurant in 2013, don’t be surprised if you see wine flights on the menu, which allow patrons to sample different wines and find new varietals they enjoy. “From pouring a flight of the same varietal from three different regions, to grouping wines by style, such as robust reds, flights encourage diners to experiment and try different wine and food combinations,” explains Nancy Light of the Wine Institute. What wines will be popular in 2013? Light says that the top three California varietals - chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir - will continue to be the bestselling wines. Moscato and red blends i.e. zinfandel and petite sirah combined with cabernet or merlot - will be hot in the new year. Trend 2: Food foraging flourishes Food foraging is set to hit its stride in 2013, meaning finding foods that are growing organically in nature and then using them in your cooking. Things like wild edible plants, berries, nuts and of course mushrooms are the most popular items foraged from the wild. Restaurants are embracing this trend and using foraged ingredients at the peak

of freshness, offering guests new flavors along with an interesting back-story about their dish. For example, Chef Tin Vuong of Abigaile restaurant in Hermosa Beach, Calif., partners with a local food forager group Shiitake Happens to get the freshest mushrooms for their recipes. Trend 3: The reinvention of the burger Did you know the cheeseburger was born in Pasadena, Calif., and every year the city hosts a special Cheeseburger Week that attracts travelers from around the world? In 2013, the burger is getting reinvented and can be found on menus from casual diners to gourmet eateries throughout the country. In 2013 take a fresh look at your burger and be creative with toppings and seasoning. Pasadena’s Umami Burger restaurant takes toppings to the limit: shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted tomatoes and parmesan crisp make for a burger that’s anything but boring. Another example is Slater’s 50/50, which reinvents the burger from the inside out with a mix of half ground beef and half ground bacon. Trend 4: Olive oil is king Two reasons make extra virgin olive oil the oil of choice for 2013 - it’s versatile and healthier. How is olive oil different than other oils? “Nutritional quality for one,” says Theo Stephan, olive oil expert for Global Gardens. “Polyphenols are found in olive oil which translates to antioxidants. Extra virgin olive oil is a monounsaturated fat; ‘fat’ is actually necessary in our diets if we are going to maintain proper organ health and keep our weight stable.” She

suggests

when

dining out to ask for extra virgin olive oil as a butter substitute. For the home cook, extra virgin olive oil can be used in just about any kind of cooking. Consider shopping online or going to a specialty store to sample different varieties - many options at regular grocery stores- are altered or have high levels of acidity, making them not truly extra virgin. Trend 5: Farm to table grows “Farm to table basically means you’re dealing with farmers, fishermen or ranchers you know and are using their products in your style of food,” says Chef Gregg Wangard of Marisol at the Cliffs Resort in Pismo Beach, Calif. “With that comes a lot of seasonality in products throughout the course of the year.” In 2013, more people will utilize farmers markets and restaurants will make efforts to source from local suppliers, which means rapidly changing menus for diners. “Right now, we work with around 30 different farmers, local fishermen and ranchers. The menu is updated about every two weeks and is reflective of what we get from these local suppliers,” notes Wangard.

ND State Defends FCS Title in Sam Houston Rematch FRISCO, TEXAS (AP) - Quarterback Brock Jensen ran for three touchdowns, Sam Ojuri scored twice and North Dakota State beat Sam Houston State 39-13 in a title-game rematch Saturday for its second straight FCS championship.

Jensen scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard sneak in the third quarter, and Ojuri had a 2-yard touchdown run on fourthand-1 after the Bison (14-1) got the ball with a fourth-down stop.

Carlton Littlejohn intercepted Bell’s pass while falling to his knees, and the turnover was upheld on review. Ojuri had 25 yards rushing on a drive that ended with Jensen’s score for a 17-10 lead. The Bearkats were driving again when Bell had to throw the ball away before getting slammed to the turf on fourth-and-1. He stayed flat on his back and sat out parts of the fourth quarter.

Jensen’s 31-yard pass to Zach Vraa set up Ojuri’s fourth-down run, and the Bison further deflated the Bearkats when they turned a botched snap on the extra point into a 2-point conversion and a 25-10 lead on a desperation pass from kicker Adam Keller to Ryan Smith gained 47 rushing yards and 30 receiving in NDSU’s championship win. Mike Hardie.

The Bearkats (11-4) had a 40-yard touchdown run by Tim Flanders brought back by a holding penalty on the first possession of the second half, and Brian Bell’s second interception on the next play led to Jensen’s go-ahead score. The Bison, who won 17-6 a year ago, improved to 10-1 in the FCS playoffs with their eighth straight postseason win. Ojuri had 92 yards rushing, and Jensen added 44 to go with 115 passing yards. John Crockett had 80 yards rushing, 24 receiving and a 26-yard pass to set up a score on a trick play after taking a straightahead handoff. Bell threw for 255 yards against the nation’s best pass defense, but had three of Sam Houston’s four interceptions. Flanders, the school’s career rushing leader, was held to 53 yards on 19 carries, a 2.8 average. After the holding call on Flanders’ run,

North Dakota State scored the first touchdown in the second quarter by covering 65 yards on three running plays. Jensen ran 21 yards on third down after the field opened when Sam Houston State’s leading tackler, Darnell Taylor, crumpled to the ground in front of him with an apparent leg injury. Ryan Smith ran 24 yards, and Jensen — who accounted for both touchdowns in last year’s game — scored from the 20. The 72-yard drive came after Marcus Williams set a North Dakota State record with his 17th career interception. Williams later added his 18th. Sam Houston State ended a championshipgame touchdown drought just before it reached six quarters and tied the score at 10 when Bell threw a 1-yard pass to K.J. Williams with 33 seconds left in the first half. A 30-yard toss to Richard Sincere put the ball on the 1-yard line three plays after an interception by Andre Martin Jr. was wiped out when he was called for defensive holding.

GM to Buy Back Stock From Treasury Department DETROIT - General Motors today said it will purchase 200 million shares of GM common stock held by the U.S. Department of the Treasury for $5.5 billion, or $27.50 per share. The share buyback is part of the Treasury’s plan, also announced today, to fully exit its entire holdings of GM stock within 12 to 15 months, subject to market conditions. Treasury has announced its intention to sell its remaining shares of common stock into the market through various means and in an

orderly fashion. Treasury intends to begin its disposition of its remaining shares as soon as January 2013, consistent with a prearranged written trading plan. In addition, Treasury has agreed to relinquish certain governance rights that were included in the U.S. Treasury Secured Credit Agreement with GM. “This announcement is an important step in bringing closure to the successful auto industry rescue, it further removes the perception of government ownership of GM among customers, and it demonstrates confidence in GM’s progress and our future, said Dan Akerson, chairman and CEO of GM. Dan Ammann, senior vice president and CFO added, “A fortress balance sheet has been a pillar of GM’s financial strategy and

has enabled us to undertake today’s actions. GM’s balance sheet will remain very strong, with estimated liquidity of approximately $38 billion at the end of 2012, following the closing of the share buyback. The repurchase price of $27.50 per share represents a 7.9 percent premium over the closing price on December 18, 2012. The share buyback is expected to close by the end of the year. This transaction will be accretive to earnings per share, as GM’s total shares outstanding on a fully diluted basis will be reduced by approximately 11 percent. In association with this share buyback, GM expects to take a charge of approximately $400 million in the fourth quarter, which will be treated as a special item. After the repurchase, Treasury will continue to own approximately 300 million shares of GM common stock, or approximately 19 percent of the outstanding shares on a fully diluted basis. Government ownership of GM stock was the result of the auto industry rescue that began under President George W. Bush in 2008 and which was expanded by President Barack Obama in 2009. The industry in general, and GM in particular, have rebounded sharply since the rescue. Since the rescue, GM has announced investments of more than $7.3 billion in the U.S. and created or retained more than 20,000 jobs. “We come to work every day grateful that taxpayers from the US and Canada stepped forward to rescue our industry, and determined to show this extraordinary help was worth it, Akerson said. www. gm.com.

A New Year Brings Opportunity For A New You The new year is widely accepted as a time to start fresh, and every year people make resolutions to better themselves. For many, this means vowing to make lifestyle changes to improve how they look and feel. However, sticking to restrictive diets and intense workout programs can be difficult and not sustainable for most people. Before you get hooked by the annual flood of diet tips and gym promotions, focus on a few key areas to commit to a healthier lifestyle for 2013. Consume whole foods Adding more whole foods into your everyday diet is a natural way to obtain the nutrients your body craves without feeling like you’re making a drastic change. One of the easiest ways to do this is by incorporating fresh juices into your daily routine. Whole-food juicing is a quick and easy way to get several servings of fruits and vegetables at once. Simply toss whole fruits, vegetables, or a combination of both into a high-performance blender and then add ice. In seconds, you’ll have a delicious, nutrient-packed beverage, plus the fiber from the whole foods to keep you full longer. Add more exercise Incorporating exercise into a daily routine is important and can have many health benefits. To begin living a more active lifestyle, experts recommend starting slowly and building up length and intensity of physical activity. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym to reap the benefits of exercise; use the stairs, go for a walk, take a bike ride, or play with your dog

or children to get moving and start looking and feeling better. Rest up Although jam-packed schedules make it seem like there aren’t enough hours in the day, it’s extremely important to set aside enough time to rest and recharge. Getting the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep each night allows for optimal mental and physical performance, and making sleep a priority can have significant impact on overall well-being. To enjoy the many benefits adequate sleep offers, adopt a bedtime routine at the same time each night. Avoid food and drink for 30 minutes prior to going to sleep and stay away from computers, televisions and other screens. Instead, enjoy a relaxing activity, such as reading or meditating, to help you fall asleep.

periods of high stress can have debilitating effects. To avoid lasting health problems, learn to recognize stress and how to deal with it effectively. Despite your busy schedule, making time for yourself each day is important and can help you avoid severe stress problems. Whether it is taking a walk, playing an instrument, practicing yoga or even calling an old friend, do something you enjoy every day. With a few adjustments to your daily activities, you can look forward to a happy, healthy new year and beyond.

This Week in History On Jaunuary 7 in 1789, America’s first presidential election is held. Voters cast ballots to choose state electors; only white men who owned property were allowed to vote. As expected, George Washington won the election and was sworn into office on April 30, 1789. As it did in 1789, the US still uses the Electoral College system, established by the U.S. Constitution, which today gives all American citizens over the age of 18 the right to vote for electors, who in turn vote for the president. The president and vice president are the only elected federal officials chosen by the Electoral College instead of by direct popular vote. Critics of the Electoral College argue that the winner-take-all system makes it possible for a candidate to be elected president even if he gets fewer popular votes than his opponent. This happened in the elections of 1876, 1888 and 2000. Supporters contend that if the Electoral College were done away with, heavily populated states such as California and Texas might decide every election and smaller states would be ignored.
