The new school is currently licensed for up to 87 three to five year olds. Once renovations of the sanctuary are completed it will be able to add approximately 16 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 18 months and 30 toddlers. The official licensing numbers will be obtained after the remodel. The school’s principal says they offer much more than a safe and fun place for children to stay while their parents or guardians are at work. “For one thing, we are innovative, says Katie Casteel. “We have the freedom to try new things. One of the new concepts they are trying is a parent-controlled web camera system. There are web cameras in all of the classrooms and parents can access the secured website with a password. “It gives them a little bit of security to know that their child is safe and a lot of parents like to see how their kids interact with other kids socially, says Casteel. Besides taking extra security measures, such as

Casteel says the school is different from a typical day care center. “It’s mostly that we focus on early education, she says. The children also learn by playing with others the same age. “They get the peer interaction with their age group and our curriculum is based on what they want to learn, Casteel says. The school currently has seven teachers and a chef on staff. Chef Randy Richardson is a graduate of the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Minneapolis/St. Paul. He prepares two meals and two snacks per day for the students and staff – but more services are planned in the coming months. “He was excited about the possibilities in the future to provide take-out orders and catering, Casteel says. The kitchen and cafeteria are also in the remodeling phase. Casteel hopes renovations in the infant/ toddler area and the kitchen/cafeteria will wrap up in January.

First International Bank Contributes To NDHIF First International Bank & Trust has contributed $220,000 to the North Dakota Housing Incentive Fund (HIF) to support the development of affordable rental housing in three northwestern North Dakota communities. Capitalized by contributions from state taxpayers, HIF provides developers of affordable rental housing with low-cost financing if they agree to set-aside units for lower-income households. The North Dakota Housing Finance Agency (NDHFA) administers the innovative state program. “I’d like to thank First International Bank & Trust for contributing to the Housing Incentive Fund and supporting the development of this much-needed housing, said Mike Anderson, NDHFA executive director. “The housing this contribution will help create will benefit many North Dakota families who may otherwise struggle to pay high rents. Contributions to HIF can be targeted to a specific project or designated for general

use in a community or region. The dollars contributed by First International Bank & Trust were allocated to projects that will create 44 senior-friendly apartments in Williston, a 124-unit family and workforce housing complex in Watford City, and 30 affordable town homes for families in Minot. “The need for affordable housing is one of North Dakota’s biggest challenges, said Anderson. “By contributing to HIF, you can help address this need and have a say in how your tax dollars are spent. HIF does not receive any direct funding from the state. It relies on contributions from taxpayers. The individuals, businesses and financial institutions that contribute to the fund receive a dollar-for-dollar state tax credit in exchange for their contribution to HIF. For more information on the Housing Incentive Fund, contact the NDHFA at (701) 328-8080, (800) 292-8621 or www. ndhousingincentivefund.org.

Williston Airport Parking Lot Can’t Keep Up With Continual Traveler Increase The Williston Airport is looking for ways to ease demand in its parking lot. Sloulin Field International Airport manager Steven Kjergaard says he is asking passengers to consider carpooling or getting a ride to the airport. “Because of the dramatic increase in passengers using the airport, we have had to place restrictions on parking, Kjergaard explains. In the past few weeks the Williston Airport has added five new round-trip flights a day. United Airlines has three new flights per day to Denver, CO while Delta Airlines has two new flights per day to Minneapolis, MN.

Kjergaard says because of rapid growth they are asking people to carpool or get a ride to the airport. “We strongly urge businesses to encourage their employees to carpool or take a shuttle/taxi to the airport instead of driving individually, he says. The City of Williston is working to expand parking at the airport – however the extra parking will not be available until late summer of 2013. Brubeck died Wednesday morning at Norwalk Hospital of heart failure after being stricken while on his way to a cardiology appointment with his son Darius, said his manager Russell Gloyd. Brubeck would have turned 92 on Thursday.

was a Kennedy Center Honors recipient. Brubeck told the AP the Kennedy Center award would have delighted his late mother, Elizabeth Ivey Brubeck, a classical pianist who was initially disappointed by her youngest son’s interest in jazz. (He added that she had lived long enough to come to appreciate his music.) Numerous jazz musicians were already on their way to Connecticut this week for

Brubeck had a career that spanned almost all American jazz since World War II. He formed The Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1951 and was the first modern jazz musician to be pictured on the cover of Time magazine – on Nov. 8, 1954 – and he helped define the swinging, smoky rhythms of 1950s and `60s club jazz. The seminal album “Time Out, released by the quartet in 1959, was the first ever million-selling jazz LP, and is still among the bestselling jazz albums of all time. The album also features “Take Five which became the Quartet’s signature theme and even made the Billboard singles chart in 1961. It was composed by Brubeck’s longtime saxophonist, Paul Desmond. After service in World War II and study at Mills College in Oakland, Calif., Brubeck formed an octet including Desmond on alto sax. The group evolved into the Quartet, which played colleges and universities. The Quartet’s first album, “Jazz at Oberlin, was recorded live at Oberlin College in Ohio in 1953. In 1996, he won a lifetime achievement award from the Grammys and in 2009 he

a birthday concert in his Brubeck’s honor that had been scheduled for Thursday in Waterbury. The show will go on as a tribute concert. Darius, an acclaimed pianist, was among those scheduled to perform along with saxophonist Richie Cannata, and Bernie Williams, former New York Yankees star and a jazz guitarist. Brubeck and his wife, Iola, had five sons and a daughter. Four of his sons – Chris on trombone and electric bass, Dan on drums, Darius on keyboards and Matthew on cello – played with the London Symphony Orchestra in a birthday tribute to Brubeck in December 2000.

Top Tech Gifts For $300 Or Less If visions of smartphones have replaced the sugarplums in your holiday dreams, you’re not alone.

MOG and more. All online content can be accessed via a home network using the player’s built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.

More than 35 percent of Americans include consumer electronics on the list of gifts they want to receive for the holidays, according to the National Retail Federation (NRF). With the NRF predicting consumer spending this holiday season will increase 4 percent over 2011, it seems likely demand for tech gifts will keep pace.

They’ve got you covered - Even if you love your iPad (and who doesn’t?), there are times when you yearn for an actual keyboard. The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover attaches to your iPad with magnets and functions as a keyboard. A leading product review site called it “the best keyboard accessory ever made for the iPad. Prices range around $100, depending on where you buy.

High-tech gifts don’t have to be high cost, too. You can find a variety of useful and fun, user-friendly and elegant tech gifts for less than $300. So when you’re making your holiday shopping list, keep these ideas in mind:

Home theater for a song - While LG suggests a price of $329 for the BH6720S - 3D-Capable Blu-Ray Disc Home Theater System with Smart TV and built-in Wi-Fi, you can find it only for $250 to $300. The 5.1 channel speaker system includes four satellite speakers, a center channel speaker and a subwoofer to give you a real theater experience in the comfort of your own living room. “Connected players like this access to a variety of content and services from the Internet, including movies and music from providers such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, VUDU, CinemaNow, YouTube, Pandora,

Great tunes cubed - From serving as a dock for your iPod, iPhone or iPad to functioning as a good old-fashioned alarm clock with FM radio, LG’s ND8520 does it all. The unique cube design delivers premium sound with its 2.1 Channel speaker system and built-in subwoofer. It’s also Airplay compatible, so you can easily stream your favorite tunes wirelessly. Android phone users can wirelessly stream their music via Bluetooth. The suggested retail price is $299, but you can probably find deals online. All charged up - Who hasn’t been caught with a low cellphone battery and no place to plug it in? Duracell’s Instant USB Charger makes it easy to keep any mini-USB powered device powered up on the go. With a lithium-ion battery and universal cable, the charger provides up to three hours of backup power for your cell phone. MSRP is around $40 but you can likely find it for less online. Great tech gifts will be welcome under almost any tree, and with some careful shopping and creative thinking you can find deals that ensure you’re not paying for those gifts well into the new year. Apple vs. Samsung - Can’t Everyone Get Along? In the latest episode of the Apple vs. Samsung legal drama that’s been playing out in the U.S. district court of Northern California, the pair met again at an appeal hearing on Thursday to argue their respective corners. Judge Lucy Koh is reviewing the jury’s $1.05 billion verdict against Samsung. Apple is hoping for a ban on the sale of Samsung devices the jury deemed to infringe its patents when they returned their verdict back in August, while Samsung wants to reduce the damages award against it — or trigger a new trial. The judge made a plea for “global peace” between the warring gadget makers - who are also doing battle around the world. Apple recently settled its remaining legal disputes with another mobile maker, HTC — by agreeing a licensing deal — an outcome Koh is likely hoping could be used to end the Apple vs. Samsung battle.

Rise of the Guardians

Rise of the Guardians is an epic adventure that tells the story of a group of heroes - each with extraordinary abilities. When an evil spirit known as Pitch lays down the gauntlet to take over the world, the immortal Guardians must join forces for the first time to protect the hopes, beliefs and imagination of children all over the world.

| 21

national/movies Samsung’s arguments on Thursday focused on calling into question the jury’s calculations when it determined the amount of damages. To counter this argument, Apple urged the Judge not to probe the jury’s reasoning on a deviceby-device basis. Samsung also asked for the verdict to be entirely dismissed and for a new trial to be held. One of its main arguments reportedly centers on the impartiality of jury foreman. However, Samsung’s juror misconduct argument is unlikely to have traction. Meanwhile, Apple asked for an increase in the damages award — and for a permanent ban on the U.S. sales of eight Samsung smartphones the jury deemed infringes its patents. Apple’s legal representative dubbed the billion-dollar award a “slap on the wrist”. Apple is attempting to add more than $500 million to the $1 billion damages award — on the grounds that the jury found Samsung willfully infringed its patents. Thursday’s court hearing concluded with Judge Koh saying she would rule at a later date. AP

Recipe of the Week Chocolate Gooey Butter Cookies

Recipe courtesy Paula Deen Ingredients 1 (8-ounce) brick cream cheese, room temperature 1 stick butter, at room temperature 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 (18-ounce) box moist chocolate cake mix Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large bowl with an electric mixer, cream the cream cheese and butter until smooth. Beat in the egg. Then beat in the vanilla extract. Beat in the cake mix. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours to firm up so that you can roll the batter into balls. Roll the chilled batter into tablespoon sized balls and then roll them in confectioner’s sugar. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake 12 minutes. The cookies will remain soft and “gooey.” Cool completely and sprinkle with more confectioners’ sugar, if desired.

Remove from the oven and let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 20 minutes. • Glaze: Combine the powdered sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest in a small bowl and stir until smooth. Spoon about 1/2-teaspoon onto each cookie and use the back of the spoon to gently spread. Let the glaze harden for about 2 hours.

ARIES (Mar. 21- April 20) There may be job changes in the works or perhaps a business deal. You seem to be making an effort to get ahead in your career. With Mars on the prowl it helps not to clash with the boss. Try to negotiate instead. A tender feeling of romance might feel right, but it isn’t all clear sailing. There could be opposition to face and difficult people in your way. It’s possible that your ego could be challenged, too. A friend’s company may be most welcome later. TAURUS (Apr. 21- May 21) Touch base with old friends this week when the urge to share secrets, talk, and discuss ideas may be strong. There are times that might call for common sense or moderation, especially where your love life or business affairs are concerned. You and your partner may be able to rethink your financial plans for the better. The more willing you are to get started, the sooner any anxious feelings will dissipate. A hint of approval feels good. However, don’t let “easygoing turn into “indulgence. GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You might have extra energy to invest in a relationship or entertainment plans. You can strengthen any important ties at work this week. If you’re socializing over the coming days, you may discover a business link that could be fortuitous in the future. If you find yourself under stress at work, it’s best to keep busy, exercise, and understand that a little humor keeps everything lighter and brighter. You might even find that adopting a pet brings a new kind of happiness. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Financial news could bring good feelings and hope for the future. On a social level, invitations may result in a favorable response. It pays to be proactive at this time and make efforts to network. You’ll see the results over the coming days and weeks. Try not to fall prey to any power games that people might play. It’s better to make a show of strength right away. There could be some dishonesty hiding the truth of an issue. Ponder business deals before moving ahead.

LEO (July 23-Aug 22) Subconscious tension could plague you if you can’t find the right focus. Hard work may be called for. There might also be difficulties with family or relatives, possibly health concerns. It seems to be up to you to comfort, care for, and be responsible for such situations. Although this may be trying, family members seem to be looking to you as a source of support and strength. Later, a romantic ambience could make you very happy. Don’t forget exercise and outdoor activities to help you relax. VIRGO (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23) Don’t be surprised if certain items of news or gossip are difficult to digest. A buoyant mood may be short-lived unless you can tackle these issues at the source. You’ll also find it useful to keep your thinking upbeat and positive. With your financial situation looking better, it might help to ask for a raise if you feel you deserve it. Be prepared to show facts and figures if you want to be taken seriously. You’re still on a roll in your career. LIBRA (Sept. 24 -Oct. 23) You have a remarkable ability to maintain high spirits even through a mini crisis. There could be possible worries concerning money, health, or misguided communications.Your detached perspective enables you to assess each situation carefully and make the right choices. On the home front, you seem to be busy clearing out clutter, decorating, or perhaps remodeling. Any hard work you do now could pay off further down the line. Consider the time spent a worthy investment. SCORPIO (Oct. 24 - Nov. 22) Helpful, creative ideas come out of the blue as long as you’re open to them. Harnessing skills and talents could bring a way to earn money from a small business. Stay focused or any efforts may peter out. Generally, you seem much more ambitious, but don’t take on so much that you feel pressured. It helps to pace yourself and have a strategy for achieving those bigger, more challenging goals. Regarding love, someone lets their guard down, making it easier for you to get closer.

SAGITTARIUS(Nov.23-Dec. 21) Whether it’s because friends are preoccupied or some other reason, you could feel a bit left out. Don’t despair if your social life isn’t all that you’d hoped. Sometimes spending a little time alone has its own advantages. Try not to let your emotions rule you when it comes to spending even if you’ve set yourself a budget. You may be selling yourself short when it comes to earnings, too. Focus on what brings you the most value and happiness. CAPRICORN (Dec 22.- Jan. 20) Socializing is a plus and could provide unexpected advantages or a helpful direction, thanks to a new meeting. A long-range dream may seem even more distant and perhaps out of reach. But even if you have to scale back, you still have plenty of options. This week try a fresh approach and think outside the box. Being original will help you stand out. You might not have to go far to benefit from lucky opportunities. Make up your mind to turn new encounters into positive connections. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21 -Feb. 19) Communication may be one of your strong points this week. If you feel that a recent conversation, inquiry, or negotiation failed to get the desired response, it’s worth giving it another try. Say yes to invitations, or maybe extend one. You may have an opportunity to make some useful contacts. Concerning your career, anything hidden may come into the light. The question will be how to handle this week’s revelations. It’s possible that a loss may be turned into a gain. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) Be careful about making commitments, especially if money is involved. You may not have all the information necessary to make the right decision. You seem optimistic, but perhaps not that well grounded regarding a question of values. If someone derails a cherished dream, perhaps you should consider it a blessing. A visit may turn out to be pleasurable, relaxing, and eye opening on some level. This week take time to pamper yourself or try a new look. You’ll feel better for it.

This Week in History On December 18, 1620, the British ship Mayflower docked at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts, and its passengers prepared to begin their new settlement, Plymouth Colony. The famous Mayflower story began in 1606, when a group of reform-minded Puritans in Nottinghamshire, England, founded their own church, separate from the state-sanctioned Church of England. Accused of treason, they were forced to leave the country. Over the next several decades, more and more settlers made the trek across the Atlantic to Plymouth, which gradually grew into a prosperous shipbuilding and fishing center. In 1691, Plymouth was incorporated into the new Massachusetts Bay Association, ending its history as an independent colony.
