BABY, IT’S COLD OUTSIDE by Jeff Horowitz

So, it’s that time of year again, by which I mean complaining time. As my 11 year old son could tell < ; #  ‚ # # "

order. This, of course, presents a problem for me as a runner. That’s because while I don’t really hate treadmills, I’m not a big fan of them. Like many other people, I fell in love with running because every run is a journey of some kind, whether through the woods, along the river, or out around my neighborhood; whether alone with my thoughts or enjoying some time with a friend. A treadmill provides none of that. Running on a treadmill is never a journey, no matter how much its console display tries to simulate one. That leaves me with no option other than to run outdoors. You’d think by now that I would have made my peace with it and come to enjoy it somehow. To some extent, that’s true. But I think that I’m just fooling myself when I try to like it. I hate it, and there’s a deeper reason for that. The truth is that we’re not meant to run in the cold. Think about it. The body has come up with a wide range of adaptations to handle extreme heat. It increases the heart rate and widens capillaries in order to bring more blood to the surface more quickly, where it can cool off. It also increases the sweat rate, which leads to shedding of heat through evaporation. Brilliant. For cold weather, however, the body is at a loss. It has no real strategy for handling extreme cold. Nothing. Nada. Zip. All it can do is to strive to limit the damage. When core temperatures drop, it shunts blood away from the extremities so that chilled blood doesn’t return to the core and make the problem worse. In extreme cases, that leads to frostbite. There’s nothing the body can do which would enable us to handle freezing weather. There’s a reason for this. It’s because we’re not supposed to be out there when it’s cold! We’re supposed to be indoors, sipping hot chocolate. That’s because as a species we originated in Africa, not Greenland. If we were meant to be running outdoors in the winter, we’d look like Siberian Huskies. (I have a running friend who kind of does, actually, but that’s another story). Clearly, I’m not reconciled to this. But I’m also not ready to give up running in the winter, either,   †‡# # ‚ ‡ ;  ‚<< ˆ‚<< #    one or two more strategies for taming the frigid beast. Here are some of these year’s tips: Wear oversize shoes and thick wool socks. Just a half size will do the trick. Plus, wool is similar to #‚ #† ;< ; < Wear toe warmers. I have a pair of short neoprene covers that go over my socks, and into my shoes. These protect the farthest part of my most extreme extremity from the effects of frosty running. Drive small machine screws into your outsoles to deal with icy conditions. This may not be great for your shoes, but it’s great for avoiding slipping and falling, and it’s cheaper than getting those commercial overshoes. Aim to use a pair of shoes that aren’t your favorite, most expensive pair. Like maybe those big clown shoes you bought when you were following my advice two paragraphs above. My beverage of choice is chicken broth. It’s tasty, warm, and usually loaded with sodium, known to us runners as a necessary electrolyte. Try to have a better attitude. I didn’t write that one; my wife did. But I’m working on it, honey. Truly I am.

Top 10 Shoes 2016

FORTIUS Media Group, LLC and Cregg Weinmann, the Running Network’s footwear and apparel editor since 1998, have teamed up to bring our readers Cregg’s picks for the top ten shoes of 2016. He’s included a variety of shoe types, brands, and prices. Full reviews can be found at the links provided. Take a look!

Nike LunarGlide 8 – $120 Though a bit tardy to the latest midsole party—repurposing polyurethane—Nike shot to the head of the class with the LunarGlide 8. The Lunarlon name is familiar, but the performance of this polyurethane version shines brighter than its predecessors, going toe to toe with the best in the marketplace. http://runningproductreviews.com/php/shoes/ training/2016-fall-training/911-nike-lunarglide-8-120

On CloudFlyer – $160 The CloudFlyer is a current high point in On’s development as a serious contender in the running shoe wars. It shows a commitment to push a technological advancement to better performance, and to do it well. Where it goes from here should be an impressive show. http://runningproductreviews.com/index.php/shoes/training/

(Tie) New Balance Vazee Pace 2– $110 The New Balance Vazee Pace 2 and the Saucony Zealot ISO 2 were shoulder to shoulder in the Running Network’s Fall Shoe Review, the runner’s version of Yin and Yang. The Vazee has a lively fast feel; the Zealot is more protective. The Zealot is tenths of an ounce lighter; the Vazee is tough enough for long runs. Each had strengths in the other’s wheelhouse, but each is complete in its own right. So here they remain, locked in a tie, and a great team if one is looking for a couple pairs of versatile shoes for faster paces.
