Why The new school of Art + Design seeks to create a new heart and center for the art disciplines established within the framework of a revitalized North Campus. This new school will consolidate all the scattered art disciplines within one larger entity that promotes collaboration and interaction with the natural features of Millrace as well as foster a new relationship with the New Knight Campus. With the current location being an existing parking lot, the new structure will begin to set a language that is both reflective of the unique identity of the north campus as well as establishing a larger framework by which art can grow into and shape its context.

Why

With the need to bring new life to the historic castle of Roccamandolfi, this design aims to create the modern-day equivalent in the form of an adjacent resort. By keeping the castle as an outdoor museum it acts as a testament to its significant history and allows it to be enjoyed by the public for generations to come. With natural beauty abounding over the large site the design acts with sensitivity to distribute its program evenly within the meadows framed by patches of foliage to avoid the need for tree cutting. The program is distributed between a lobby and 12 individual suites.

3_Forest Refuge Who Private Family

What Single Family Residence

Where Seattle, WA Why The intent of this forest retreat is to act as an isolated escape for a family on long weekends and holidays. Set within a steep site on lake front property, the design is set on stilts to mitigate environmental degradation, expedite construction, and to emulate a tree house. The design of the home is composed of two simple volumes stacked upon one another that differentiate the living and sleeping functions of the home. The top box acts as one large public space for the family with adjacent terraces that give a strong connection to the surroundings. The lower box acts as the sleeping quarters for the family and gives direct access to the lake below.

Why This rehabilitation project was designed with the intent to bring new life to a historic 112-year-old Greek cross barn with a structural retrofit and programmatic overhaul. The core principals emphasized in this project include natural daylighting at all floors, passive systems, strong public presence on the first floor, strong use of symmetry to improve way finding and spatial hierarchy. A major concern in this project was developing a structural system that would complement the existing historic stacked stone base and wood superstructure without infringing upon it. This was achieved by a hybrid system of concrete shear walls and steel beams.

5_A Bench for Mourning Who Eugene Masonic Cemetery

Why While a bench at its very core is designed to allow a user to give it purpose, this bench seeks to go beyond this simple paradigm. Using black walnut and red oak with an oil finish to bring out a strong visual contrast that is mimicked by simple yet powerful geometries give this bench a more vernacular appearance. The overall purpose of this bench is to reflect the dark times that occur during our lives and how through it all we each can become enlightened. The bench itself is constructed out of a series of lap joints, metal hardware, and dominoes that allow it to be flat packed and moved as 4 pieces.

The first series of drawings is a collection of details from a house that was originally designed using conventional light wood framing and retrofitted to meet the rigorous Passive House standards. The retrofit uses an external TJI system to house a 16” deep layer of cellulose insulation along with high performing triple pane windows. The second series of drawings is a collection of details from a five-story science building design. This building incorporates a terra cotta rain screen system over the majority of the facade where punched storefront openings occur. Over specific parts of south facing double height spaces, a double glazed curtain wall system has been developed. This system is comprised of an aluminum framed inner layer with a cable suspended SSG system on the outer layer.
