Week Three

Reading: Kolerevic B. 2003. Architecture in the Digital Age

Kolerevic described three fundamental type of fabrication techniques in the reading. Outline the three techniques and discuss the potential of Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling. (150 words max)

The three fundamental type of fabrication techniues are subtractive fabrication, addictive fabrication and formative fabrication. Subtractive fabrication involves removal of a part of volume from a solid through electro, chemically or mechanically subtractive processes. Addictive fabrication involves adding of materials by layers by the machine. Formative fabrication involves deformation of material by using mechanical forces. Computer Numeric Controlled fabrication with parametric modelling is full of potencial as with the aid of machines, such as CNC routers which are in 4 or 5 or 6 axis set up, complex shapes and design are able to be created and hence may boost more innovations and developments in design industry.

Week Three Surface Creation

During the process of iterating suefaces, I was trying to discover some twisting surfaces. I think the combinatin of complex smooth twisting surfaces may creat more interesting spaces and more intersting shadows and light pattern may formed.

Week Four

Panels & Waffle

During the panelling process, I was aiming to creat variety in openings, pattern and experience. I have used offsetting point and attractor point to creat variety in pattern and openings. I have purpposely made one surface with openings and 3D panels that allows light to coming in through the openings and leads to a dynamic experience, while another surface with 2D panels and no openings that forms a more enclosed and dark space. I find the contrast in these two experiences is quite interesting.

This hollow twisting structure creates a large interior space that is getting larger as it approaches another end from one end. The space changes from a more public and open space to a more intimate and private space.

Week Five

During the process of designing the boolean form, I have tested a lot of ideas from shapes to using of attractor point to making rotation to cuttting, trying to creat intersting varieties that lead to the formation of interesting and hopefully, meaningful spaces. In my final boolean form, the cones creat a space that is chaging from open space to a more intimate space. The variation in continous mountainlike arch creats variation in light shadow as well.

Week Five Isometric

In my final boolean form, the cones creat a space that is chaging from open space to a more intimate space. The variation in continous mountain-like arch creats variation in light shadow as well. I have chosen this to be my final boolean form as I really like this abstract and fluent experience that it brings to me. I also like the contrast between its simple abstract form and its complex variations in space and light shadow.

Task 01 Matrix I have chosen lofts and offseting point and panelling to be the variates as I was aiming to create complex twisitng surfaces that may lead to formation of intersting space. I have chosen 1.4 to be my final lofts as they are twisted in an interesting way that creaats a twisting space which is getting more intimate as it approaches one end from another end. I have chosen 2.4 to be my final offseting point result as there is a variety in offset distance and the variety is not too distinct that gives a feeling of inharmounious. I have chosen 3.4 to be my panelling result as there is an interesting compariosn between 2D and 3D in one model.

Task 02 Matrix I have chosen shapes, grid manipulation and cone transformation to be my variates. I have chosen shapes as I wanted to discover some intersting shapes other than spheres. I have chosen irregular cones as they create more varieties and they are less symmetric as compared to the spheres and regular cones. Grid manipuation, scalling and rotaion also gives more changes to the model.
