The seventh annual wine festival, scheduled to take place at the Reiman-Simmons House on Aug. 27, will mark many firsts for the Quincy Valley. The festival will feature many honored local wineries, such as Jones of Washington, Beaumont Cellars, Cave B Estate Winery, White Heron Cellars and St. Laurent. At the Central Washington Wine Awards this past weekend in Wenatchee, Quincy wines ran away with wins for best dessert wine, best in show, best white and best red. There will also be a variety of fun events, such as a silent auction, a blind tasting, a ring toss and a hula hoop contest. Jazz band Easy Money will provide music for the evening. Tickets in advance will be sold at The Grape, the Quincy Valley Chamber of Commerce and participating wineries for $30. Tickets sold at the event will cost $35. Cows are more controllable,� MaKayla said. “Plus they are cute.� She said they work with them for a few minutes a day to get them ready for the fair. “You know how to push their buttons,� she said. For QHS junior Alexis Pio, the pig barn will be home for the rest of the week. The second-year showman took a loan for $230. He was able to buy a pig for $150 and has put in $180 in feed leading up to fair week. He said the pig was held about three miles out of town and he was able to get out there two times per week after work. His pig weighed in at 258 pounds. “I like it,� he said about working with the pigs. “My goal was to get (the weight) high enough without passing the weight limit of 285 pounds. “They are pretty easy. There’s not that
much to it.� For Michael Heitstuman, the fair is family business. The QHS senior brought a bevy of sheep to the fair. He already has blue ribbons on the wall, but that was just for his animal. He will enter fitting and showing on Wednesday and Thursday and sell on Friday — like his sisters in the beef barn and friends in the swine barn. But he did not choose the lamb, the lamb was chosen for him. “It’s been in my family for years. I had no choice,� Heitstuman said. “I’m not saying I don’t like it, but it was chosen for me when I was younger.� As a regular in the Round Robin, Heitstuman has had his time with cows, horses, goats, sheep and even pigs. In the end, he prefers the family business — sheep. “The best thing is they are easier to handle than pigs,� he said. The only way to find out which type of animal is best is to head to the fair and watch the Quincy FFA show their animals. Oh, yea, keep an eye out for local 4-H kids, as well.
