Executive Welcome Dear current and prospective sponsors, The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Law Society Committee are proud to present our 2019 Prospectus. It details the initiatives, events and support services for future legal professionals which would not be possible without your generous support. Of the 3500 law students at QUT, over 2500 are our Members. Our size blesses us with a diverse range of students who benefit from our programs. Our primary mandate is to meet their needs as law students, and we achieve this through engaging with both internal and external parties. A pivotal change in 2019 is the introduction of our Equity Portfolio, after an extensive consultation process with our Members. The Equity Portfolio will provide increased support to students in a variety of different ways, ranging from training to peer support. We believe the Portfolio will be particularly beneficial for those from diverse backgrounds who value inclusivity, fairness, and progress during their time at university and in the workforce. Our 2019 initiatives also include targeting key skill gaps for young graduates – skills required to successfully integrate into a professional legal environment; and providing specific initiatives for early year students. We believe this will benefit students during their degree, and also alleviate a growing problem in the modern world for law schools and human resource professionals alike: student engagement. As part of our efforts to increase student engagement, we are making extensive use of new technology, and providing support services that students actually want and need. In 2018, we leveraged our online presence to increase sponsor exposure and will continue this initiative by cutting back on traditional publications and shifting to bite-sized, frequent, online content.

Why Sponsor Us? • • •

Put your firm at the forefront of the minds of QUT’s best and brightest law students. Help shape the future of law in Queensland, Australia, and the World. An excellent PR and business development opportunity to show clients and the legal profession that your firm supports the wider community and is socially responsible.

We are excited about the direction the QUT Law Society is taking and are confident the diversity and cross-section of skills amongst our Executive will deliver exceptional services for your firm. On behalf of our Members, we wish to thank our 2018 sponsors for your generous and continued support, which has facilitated both the growth and success of the QUT Law Society. We look forward to working with you and discussing our 2019 programs at your earliest convenience. Kind regards,

Jack Bristed President, QUT Law Society

Zane Jhetam Vice-President, QUT Law Society

Negotiation |EXCLUSIVE| The Negotiation Competition is the first opportunity for keen students to show their ability in 2019. This competition builds on the skills acquired through dispute resolution education, and further develops soft skills. This ultimately means our Members can build an understanding of how to advocate for clients outside of formal court process. Our negotiation competition reflects the industry’s focus on real commercial solutions to client problems. In particular, this competition requires students to consider factors outside of strict legal theory, such as the client’s business interests, third party interests, and negotiation tactics. Preparation time is kept short to reflect real-world legal practice, and as a result, the Negotiation regularly receives massive engagement. Those who do participate comment that the skill development of this competition continues to aid them throughout their degree and practice.

Future Advocates Package |EXCLUSIVE| The Future Advocates Package allows your firm to show that they are serious about high level commercial advocacy, and to place yourself squarely in the sights of the most enthusiastic law students at QUT. Open Moot The Open Moot is the premier event for mooters, judges and spectators. Rebranded this year, competitors moot a complex commercial litigation problem which tests academic rigour and oral advocacy skills. By sponsoring this moot, you are uniquely positioned in front of our best and brightest competitors. It’s a new and formidable challenge for competitors who have performed well in other competitions. The final will also be strongly attended, with high support amongst the cohort and many younger students interested in learning from the best. Moot Club Moot Club has become a cornerstone of Law at QUT, with hundreds of Members attending over the course of the year. It's a positive and supportive environment which fosters the skills and confidence to participate in ‘serious’ competitions. Moot Club encourages competitions participation by teaching the theory and practice of advocacy. Moot Club has become a collegiate atmosphere for anyone interested in honing practical skills. It has two key components, each of which is a distinct opportunity for your firm. First, the Club hosts a ‘Welcome to Moot Club’ information evening. In the past, this event only took place in Semester 1. However this year, due to a large amount of interest from the student body (and to include those who may have missed mooting opportunities in Semester 1), the event will also take place in Semester 2. It functions to both inform attendees about upcoming competitions and is a platform for advocates in practice to share their experiences with students. Second, there are frequent workshops structured to develop skills for upcoming competitions.

Early Competitors Package |EXCLUSIVE| This package allows you to sponsor two key initiatives which help fledgling law students get involved with extra-curricular activities: the First Year Moot and our Competitions Handbook. Your sponsorship will give wide-eyed students essential tools for their advocacy journeys. First Year Moot The First Year Moot is designed to provide a supportive introduction to mooting and competitions. New students are given the chance to engage in legal problem solving, develop legal research skills, and try advocacy for the first time. In our survey, over 70% of our Members identified that the First Year Moot was a key experience in their first year of law school. This is reflected by high participation in the competition, and attendance at the Grand Final. Mooting is a fantastic way to gain practical experience for all students interested in working as a barrister or in commercial litigation, or for anyone interested in advocacy and public speaking generally. Competitions Handbook The Competitions Handbook is a law school staple which gives students a crash-course on each and every competition mode that we run. The Handbook outlines the format, required skills, and details of each of our 2019 competitions. It also incorporates anecdotes and commentary from experienced competitors who share their experiences and insights for the benefit of those new to the field. The Handbook is a great way for your firm to show that it is practical, cares about real world skills, and by the same token, this is an opportunity for your firm to have direct exposure to students who are taking genuine steps to develop in-demand practical skills. As many of our students, particularly those in their first and second years have a strong interest in pursuing mooting to varying degrees, we are expecting readership of this Competitions Handbook to be comparable with our most successful publications.

Paper Presentation |EXCLUSIVE| The Paper Presentation is a highlight for skill development of students, allowing competitors to engage in focused legal research and reasoning. This theory is translatable into a practical, real world context as the competitors present their paper in front of their peers and professionals. This reflects the market focus on knowledge sharing and continuing legal education – junior lawyers are often called upon to present workshops, produce insight articles, and facilitate discussion. In the written phase of the competition, competitors write an essay on a thought-provoking and contemporary topic. Your firm will be invited to review the papers, and determine which papers ought to progress to presentation. In phase two, competitors will present the substance of the article in the format of an engaging speech. The winner of the Paper Presentation may be featured prominently in the QUTLS Student Law Revue (See page 38, below).

Client Interview |EXCLUSIVE| The Client Interview is an incredibly important competition within the portfolio, as it gives competitors the opportunity to build the essential skill of client interviewing. Teams of two are able to participate, and interview a potential client who has been provided a secret set of facts revolving around a specific legal problem. This competition does not focus on the complexity of the matter, but rather the competitors’ ability to make the client feel comfortable, and ask the right questions in order to discover what the primary issues are in the case.

Junior Moot |EXCLUSIVE| The Junior Moot was the largest competition facilitated by the Competitions portfolio in 2017 with over 90 participating teams, and is directed at law students from all years who have had limited mooting experience, but have a keen interest in mooting. In comparison to the First Year Moot, the problem encountered by competitors in the Junior Moot is more complex, and greatly assists in testing the proficiency of competitors’ legal research and advocacy skills. This competition is an important stepping stone for students newer to legal competitions wishing to compete in external competitions.

Online Moot |EXCLUSIVE| The Online Moot is a ground-breaking competition for QUTLS. This competition is hosted to maximise reach and exposure to the cohort, particularly reaching external and rural students. By investing in cutting edge technology to carry out this moot, QUTLS seeks to follow the current trend in the legal market to use technology and form an inclusive and diverse pool of mooters. Of course, this Moot will test written and oral skills in the context of legal problem solving. However, the oral component will be delivered online, in a fashion which provides a unique opportunity to identify decisive and well-considered competitors. The Online Moot has an added advantage – it will prepare students for other common online tools adopted by firms, such as those used for clerkship interviews. This means that competitors will be experienced in presenting in front of a camera, and will allow students who may have had limited opportunity for participation to become involved in mooting.

The event features speeches from inspirational leaders on the advancements made by female lawyers and the struggles faced by women in the legal profession. In 2019, we envision this event will be a brilliant opportunity for progressive firms to tout their flexible working options and how they facilitate work/life balance. Last year, the QUT Law Society was the first Queensland Law Student Society to introduce an event of this kind. Our Members are thirsty for more information on these exciting areas of law, so we are continuing this event in 2019. When surveying our members, we identified the growing need for an event which focuses on the complex relationship between law and AI technologies. LGBTIQA+ & the Law Forum |EXCLUSIVE| QUT Law Society is proud to once again present our LGBTIQA+ and the Law Panel Forum. The Forum is a perfect opportunity to show that your firm stands strong as an LGBTIQA+ ally. In 2018 Australia saw the legalisation of same sex marriage, but we believe more must be done to ensure an Australia that truly includes LGBTIQA+ community: we must ensure access to justice to justice and equal opportunity for this long-disadvantaged minority. We envision panellists from law reform, public policy, and a mixture of practice areas and specialisations will lead an open, safe and informal discussion.

Domestic Violence Awareness Breakfast |EXCLUSIVE| Due to its consistent success and interest amongst our members, we are excited to continue holding our Domestic Violence Awareness Breakfast. Domestic violence continues to be an important topic that concerns our Members, and the wider community. The headlines and statistics point to issues in our legal system and access to justice; our members want to know what they can do to help as emerging lawyers. The Breakfast is equity based, focused on the role of lawyers in improving outcomes by assisting vulnerable members of the community in difficult circumstances. The Breakfast educates and raises awareness of legal issues surrounding Domestic Violence. Past keynote speakers have included Angela Lynch, CEO of Womens’ Legal Service; and Genevieve Dee, Family Law partner at Cooper Grace Ward. Sponsoring this event is a firm statement of solidarity with survivors, whilst raising the profile of this societal problem. It also provides your firm the opportunity to engage with future lawmakers, policy writers and those interested in tackling this issue through diplomacy.

Events All Social Events |EXCLUSIVE| The release of our social calendar is highly anticipated by our members. In 2018, marketing for our social events received massive student engagement on social media. That was reflected with record attendance and excitement across the Portfolio. For instance, we sold out of our 1200 Law Ball tickets in under 3 hours total. Social events give students the chance to network with their peers and take a step back from the highly intensive study requirements of law school. As such, sponsorship of the Portfolio is a chance to showcase that your firm supports a strong work-life balance. It’s also a passive way to keep your firm in the front of the minds of our Members. Your sponsorship will include the support of:

Law Revue |EXCLUSIVE| Law Revue has quickly become one of our signature events. Created by a group of enthusiastic and creative law students, Law Revue provides comedic relief and positively builds upon the culture of our law school. Both participants and patrons eagerly anticipate Revue, and for good reason: Law Revue is an outstanding product and has become a key event in the QUT Calendar. An outstanding success and one of our most popular community engagement events yet, we are very proud of the wonderful students who work so hard each year to make the production come to life. Filmed at QUT’s state-of-the-art Gardens Point Theatre, we are aiming to increase the spectacle and overall quality of the show in 2019 by taking advantage of powerful new technologies. Law Revue video-sketches are filmed and uploaded to an array of social media platforms, including YouTube and Facebook. This content receives significant attention each year: averaging in excess of 5,000 views per post leading up to opening night. We strongly encourage the sponsoring firm to participate in the Law Revue in any way they are comfortable with. Your input is invaluable to continuing this wonderful tradition.

Sport & Health The Sport and Health Portfolio is an integral part of the support network we provide for students during their law degree. We aim to create a culture of wellbeing and positivity by educating students about mental and physical health; and the benefits of exercise. Wellbeing has become a huge focus for the legal industry in recent years and our program aims to help students identify and constructively manage their physical and mental health. We provide this support through a variety of activities and informative events. Students who participate in our Sport and Health initiatives are engaged outside of their studies and reap the benefits of a healthy balance between work, life, and study. We are looking for sponsorship from firms who also pride themselves in supporting the wellbeing and longevity of their staff. The Sport and Health portfolio has two broad sponsorship streams and we are seeking an exclusive sponsor for each. We are also seeking donations for our exam stress packs which will be handed out to students during exam block. Your Sponsorship of our Sport and Health Portfolio contributes to the following: •

Subsidies for students;

Facility and equipment hire;

Purchase of branded apparel for photographs of the event, which will appear on our website and social media platforms;

Purchase of team jerseys and other apparel; and

Transport and catering.

Sport Program |Exclusive| The QUT Law Society Sport Program is an important part of Members’ co-curricular involvement during their law degree. In 2019, we are bridging the gap between the Sport Program and our active community involvement initiatives. Your sponsorship of the Program includes: Social Sport This event is the foundation of QUT Law Society Sport! Members vote on which sports they would like to participate in, and their registration fee includes a QUT Law Society singlet which incorporates your logo. Previous sports have included touch football, soccer, netball, dodgeball and water polo. Bridge to Brisbane This is one of the largest charity runs in Brisbane, and we will be entering a team in 2019 to support the wider community. Queensland Law Society Touch Competition In 2018, Members relished the chance to engage as a team and release some stress on the field, while networking with many firms and other student law societies. Running Club Running club is both a weekly social event, and training for the community fun runs we participate in. This year QUT Running Club and QUT Law Society Running Club will be joining forces to offer more intensive sessions, coaches, and rehab therapy to prevent injuries.

Women’s Legal Service River to Rooftop Fundraiser In 2018, QUT Law Society Members tackled this event in large numbers. They were challenged by the stair climb, and the important messages about the work their fundraising did for victims of domestic violence. 20/20 Cricket Grudge Match A new initiative! An Australian classic! This has all the benefits of the Soccer Grudge Match, and many more. It will give more students an opportunity to participate and enjoy the rivalry with our fellow law students from other institutions.

UQLS v QUTLS Soccer Grudge Match Due to our fierce rivalry with both UQLS and GULS, we see many students get into the spirit of the game and take an interest in our performance. Therefore, your firm will be exposed to a large number of our Members. In the weeks leading up to each event, we see 5,000+ views on each of our posts promoting the grudge matches.

Exam Stress Packs |EXCLUSIVE| In 2019 we will be supporting our Mental Health Program by providing exam stress packs to our Members. The packs will be on offer the week before exams, and will be available for collection outside our QUTLS office. This provides the students with an opportunity to engage with QUTLS committee members and our other resources on offer. QUTLS committee members will also visit communal areas such as the Law Library to hand out the packs directly to members who can’t spare a moment away from their books. We are seeking donations from our generous sponsors of: •

Mental Health Program |EXCLUSIVE| The QUT Law Society Mental Health Program has grown considerably from its humble beginnings. We now see mental health as our one of our Members’ primary concerns and a topic they wish to discuss more openly. As an organisation, we are committed to facilitating discussions about mental health and acknowledge the difficulties many students face when studying and transitioning into the workforce. In 2019, we wish to provide more education and wellbeing opportunities for our Members. Sponsorship of the Mental Health Program includes three key initiatives. First, it supports the Mental Health Breakfast held during National Mental Health Week. This event is focused upon awareness and starting conversations, typically facilitated by representatives of the sponsor. Second, your sponsorship includes support for participation in the LawRight Walk for Justice. This event is important for our members, as it merges passion for community and healthy activity. The Walk for Justice has strong attendance, with QUT Law one of the largest groups in attendance each year. Third, we will also be facilitating training for our members. The most extensive component of the training regime is provision of Mental Health First Aid Accreditation, which will provide students with tools to have conversations, assist their friends, and provide appropriate referrals for fellow students in need. We will also be hosting non-accredited information sessions.

Media & Communication Our Media and Communication Portfolio is an excellent way to create a long-lasting impression with our Members. We boast the most extensive social media reach of all law societies with over eight-thousand engaged followers across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. It is true that we give your brand great exposure when you sponsor our other Portfolios, such as Competitions and Events. However, our media platforms are a unique opportunity for you to deliver a bespoke message straight to law students; and utilise an array of personalised designs to bolster your branding. Our actual readership across a variety of platforms over 2018 exceeded 17,000. Our publications are marketed across each of our channels and have been designed in such a way that sponsors are able to maximise their exposure to our student body. We understand that each of our sponsors has their own distinct marketing approach and style. In response, we have fine-tuned our diverse media package. So, take this opportunity to highlight your clerkship and graduate programs; connect with our members on current issues which matter to your firm; and deliver your message to our Members when they are most comfortable. Sponsoring Media and Communication in 2019 means access and impact. Our 2019 Media and Communication Portfolio consists of a strong mix of talented young students who have the dedication and enthusiasm required to ensure our publications, marketing and social media presence are all professional and engaging to our members. Our new QUT Law Society Blog and O-Week Brochures are offered as exclusive sponsorship items. Our variety of other publications and online advertising is provided through a tiered package, details of which can be found on page 36. We look forward to assisting your firm to engage with all QUT Law Students.

Blog | EXCLUSIVE| Millennials prefer frequent, bite-sized content that can both entertain and engage them. Over half are consuming their news digitally (Deloitte, 2017); and around three-quarters use social media daily (Deloitte, 2017). The blog is your ticket to the screens of our Members, day-in and day-out. You will get unprecedented frequency of exposure alongside content that our Members are highly engaged with. The blog will touch on news, topical legal issues and QUT law student’s opinions. We intend to use it in two ways. First, it will serve as a tool to spread information to our members in a way that is convenient and accessible for them. Second, it will provide comic relief for Members by documenting current affairs from QUT and beyond in a satirical way, using a unique blend of legal humour and pure wit.

In most instances, our O-week stall is the first encounter many students have with our Society. Hence, we feel that this is a great opportunity to hand out the brochure in person (and not to overwhelm students with information e.g. Careers Guide etc.) and engage in a discussion with them about the dedicated work that QUTLS does.
