Quinnipiac University Athletics • 2011-2012 Athletic Awards Program October 7 Quinnipiac senior captain Kimberly Cunniff’s (Walpole, Mass.) goal exactly three minutes into overtime gave the Quinnipiac field hockey team a 2-1 win against Robert Morris in a Northeast Conference match-up at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Complex in Hamden, Conn. Ocotber 8, 2011: Four first-period goals, including a pair of power-play goals from junior Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.),powered the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team to a 4-3 win against Ohio State in a non-conference match-up at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The Bobcats split the season-opening series with the Buckeyes to open the year at 1-1.

Senior Kristina Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) scored her first two goals of the season, including the game-winner, as the Quinnipiac women’s soccer team defeated Robert Morris, 3-2, in a Northeast Conference match on Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 3-5-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play, while the Colonials drop to 7-5-1 on the year and 1-2 in the NEC.

Junior William Daniels’ (Clackamas, Ore.) long blast in the first overtime propelled the Quinnipiac University men’s soccer team to a thrilling victory on Friday afternoon, as the Bobcats defeated the St. Francis (Pa.) Red Flash, 2-1, on the Quinnipiac Soccer Field in Hamden, Conn. After a scoreless second half, Daniels’ tally just two minutes into the extra frame pushed the Bobcats to their second straight NEC triumph at home this season. October 8 The Quinnipiac women’s cross country team placed ninth in the varsity race and eighth in the sub varsity meet at the New England (NEICAAA) Championships on Saturday, Oct. 8 at Franklin Park in Boston Mass. Thirty-nine teams competed in the women’s varsity race, where Boston College won with 38 points, while Quinnipiac finished with a total of 279 points. Junior Becca White (Natick, Mass) paced the Bobcats with a ninth place finish in 18:04.

The Quinnipiac men’s cross country team placed 33rd out of 43 teams in the varsity race at the New England (NEICAAA) Championships on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Quinnipiac freshman Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) led the Bobcats with a 68th place finish in 26:08. The University of Connecticut won the men’s varsity meet with 149 points, while Quinnipiac finished with a total of 823 points. October 9 Sophomore Jess Rusin (Garwood, N.J.) scored twice to lead the Quinnipiac field hockey team to a 4-2 Northeast Conference win against Saint Francis (Pa.). With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 8-5 overall and remain undefeated in NEC play at 2-0. Saint Francis drops to 3-11 on the season and 1-1 in NEC play.

On Sunday, the men’s and women’s soccer programs are supporting the efforts of Truong Nguyen ‘08, a former men’s soccer player now serving in the Peace Corps in Indonesia. Volunteers will be handing out information and accepting donations to help Truong as he works with his village in East Java, Indonesia to build a multipurpose (soccer and basketball) athletic court. The purpose of an athletic court is to give students a safe place to participate in sports and build confidence and pride within the community.

Senior defender Matthew Rothbart (Cheshire, Conn.) capitalized on the infraction and buried his first penalty kick opportunity of the season to lead Quinnipiac to a 5-4 overall record and a 3-0 NEC mark. The loss drops Robert Morris to 4-6-1 overall and 0-4 in NEC action. Hoops For Heart Health is a not-for-profit association that was established to address the problem of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in high school, collegiate and professional sports. Quinnipiac’s men’s and women’s basketball teams are the first in NCAA Division I basketball to partake in the training session. October 12: The Quinnipiac Acrobatics & Tumbling team will host its fall clinic on Saturday, Nov. 26, with sign-ups beginning at 12 p.m. The clinic will involve teaching proper warm-up and conditioning exercises, as well as educating athletes the proper progression of tumbling, acrobatics and stunting skills. This year’s clinic is open to young women between the ages of 13-18, with the pre-registration deadline set for November 18.

Four different Bobcats scored as the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team defeated Holy Cross, 5-3, in the Bobcats’ home-opener at the High Points Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. October 13 Quinnipiac women’s soccer senior forward Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) has been named one of the Northeast Conference’s top-20 players, according to the national club and collegiate soccer website, TopDrawerSoccer.com.

Quinnipiac men’s soccer junior forward Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) and freshman forward Ola Ogunjobi (London, England) have been named two of the top-20 players in the Northeast Conference, as highlighted by TopDrawerSoccer.com. Suprise garnered the number 12th spot and Ogunjobi the 14th spot on the national club and collegiate soccer website.

October 14 The Quinnipiac women’s golf team carded a combined 367 for a 19th place finish on the first day of the two-day Rutgers Women’s Golf Invitational. Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Manitoba) led Quinnipiac an 88 (46-42). October 15 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey junior Jeremy Langlois’ (Tempe, Ariz.) natural hat trick led the Bobcats to a 7-1 win against Canisius in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.

The Quinnipiac University men’s lacrosse team is one of four teams to participate in the Christian Prince Memorial Tournament on Sunday, October 16th at Reese Stadium on the campus of Yale University. The field consists of all Connecticut-based institutions including Sacred Heart, Fairfield and the hosting Bulldogs.

In front of over 1,000 fans at a jam-packed Burt Kahn Court, the largest home crowd in program history, the Quinnipiac University women’s volleyball team knocked off St. Francis (Pa.) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22 and 25-23) on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats used a balanced attack that featured seven players with at least one kill in the match. On the other side of the net, QU held the Red Flash to a minute .104 attacking percentage.

October 16 Spencer Heichman (Yorba Linda, Calif.) scored twice to lead the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team to its fourth straight win as the Bobcats defeated Canisius, 4-0, High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center on Sunday afternoon. Quinnipiac improves to 4-1-0 on the season while Canisius drops to 0-2-0.

The Quinnipiac softball team volunteered at the Connecticut Special Olympics Softball Competition and Tournament held at the Connecticut SportsPlex in North Branford, Conn. on Sunday, Sept. 11.

October 18 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey junior Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) was named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Oct. 18, 2011. Langlois totaled four goals and two assists in a 3-0 week that saw Quinnipiac defeat Holy Cross and sweep Canisius.
