Dear Friends of Prep Lacrosse, It is hard to believe, but we celebrate with great appreciation the 26th season of Coach Kevin Giblin’s tenure here at Prep. Having experienced first hand the efforts of Kevin, his staff and loyal student athletes, none of us are surprised at the level of success he has brought to Georgetown Prep. Under his extraordinary leadership, Prep has established itself as one of the premier lacrosse programs in the nation. Through his dedication and commitment to compete at the highest level, Kevin’s passion for the game has instilled within our student athletes a work ethic and sense of urgency to perform under all types of conditions. He commands excellence from his players on and off the field and his resilient nature is contagious. Kevin had a vision when he stepped into the role of Head Coach 26 years ago; he along with his players and staff has worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality. This past decade alone Prep has accomplished the following: 1.

Won or shared 7 IAC championships

2.

Ranked number 1 by Washington Post 7 times

3.

Ranked number 1 in state of Maryland 3 times

4.

Has been ranked in top 25 nationally every year

5.

Has won two National Championships.

Coach’s vision is alive and well as we enter the beginning of his 26th season posting a 386-79 career record. Most importantly, Prep’s program is fortified with Ignatian Spirituality. Georgetown Prep is focused on forming men of competence, conscience, courage and compassion; men of faith, men for others. Central to Prep’s mission is to prepare our students athletes for college. It brings pride to Prep when we see the quality universities our lacrosse players attend. Over 150 Prep student athletes have played at the collegiate level. Congratulations to all of the alumni who have achieved so much academically and athletically. On behalf of the entire Prep community, I want to thank all of the families, alumni and friends of Prep lacrosse for their spirited support as we continue the mission of educating our young men in mind, body and soul.

Best of luck, Hoyas, Berst of from the Mater Dei Griffins.

Program History The First Dozen Years The first dozen years of Georgetown Prep lacrosse began to establish the fundamentals that are obvious in today’s teams; patient offense, swarming defense and outstanding lacrosse IQ. The first dozen years produced an All-Met Player of the year, 26 total All-Met selections, and a coach of the year award. However, the first dozen years did not produce a win against Landon, or an IAC title. Then came the 2000’s.

The Decade of Dominance In the 2000’s, finally everything came together. Georgetown Prep lacrosse, under the tutelage of Kevin Giblin, Mike Kubik, Brendon Kelly and all the terrific coaches, became a national powerhouse. From 2000 to 2011, Prep won or shared seven IAC Championships (including six of the last eight), went 63-13 against IAC opponents, went 205-33 overall, was ranked in the top 20 every year but one, and produced two national championships (in 2003 and 2006). Prep ended Landon’s ridiculous “Streak” and became the year-in and year-out favorite to beat Landon and win the IAC. This decade produced five All-Met Players of the Year, 55 total All-Met selections and numerous coaches of the year awards and all-Maryland and all-American players. Truly, “a Decade of Dominance.”

Insight & Perspective What it Means to Play Georgetown Prep Lacrosse by Dan Glading ‘05

I vividly remember running around the track at Prep on cold winter mornings during my first period phys-ed class. I hated long distance runs – still do – but there was one comforting thought that kept me moving. That thought was that if I managed to keep working hard, there was chance that, in a couple of months, I would make the varsity lacrosse team and play on the very field I was grudgingly running laps around. What I went on to learn and increasingly appreciate is how special the opportunity of playing on the team actually was. Playing lacrosse at Georgetown Prep rewarded me with life lessons and life opportunities for which I will forever be grateful. The program is special. It is no wonder why year after year alumni come back to either cheer the team on from the stands or coach them from the sideline. There is a shared sense of gratitude and pride felt among all who once wore the GP jersey. Mr. Giblin and his staff have built a nationally-recognized, powerhouse program that molds young high school boys into not only better lacrosse players, but more importantly, better people. We all know that it is not always easy to be a Prep lacrosse player. Playing time is a constant struggle, but it is important to remember that every player’s role on the team is equally significant. Also, pressure mounts year after year to match the precedent set by past teams, games, and players. At times when we struggled with injuries my senior year, I remember wondering how dismayed heralded alumni like Scott Doyle or Matt Hahn would have felt about our efforts. I believe this is one of the key differentiators that make the program special. There is a sense of something bigger than one individual player and also bigger than the team as a whole. Lacrosse at Georgetown Prep is a tradition. It’s a tradition of sportsmanship and success by virtue of hard work. My anxiety over how past players viewed our team in 2005 was misconceived and it is easier for me to understand in retrospect. When you play lacrosse at Georgetown Prep, you not only have the attention of all those who have played before you, you also have their support. As a program, we certainly will not win every time we step on the field, but you can count on a collective effort from each and every player and member of the staff. It is the consistency of the effort that sets us apart. My college coach was famous among his players for saying, “If you want to dazzle me, dazzle me with your consistency!” Georgetown Prep has dazzled lacrosse fans across the nation for many years now, and I have no doubt that future teams will continue to do so. If, on a rare occasion, you catch me running around the track at Prep, there is a good chance that I am daydreaming about going back in time. What would it be like to be a sophomore again? No expectations, no pressure, and no idea where I would be ten years later. To the players, the time flies by. I would tell myself to continue to work hard, tell my teammates to keep supporting each other and, most importantly, have fun. You are forming friendships and memories that will last forever. Know that you have the support of everyone who has been in your shoes. We know what it takes to be a member of the program, and you guys are doing a great job carrying the banner for us all. Best of luck in 2013! Danny Glading is a 2005 graduate of Georgetown Prep and a 2009 graduate from the University of Virginia. Danny lead the Hoyas to a national championship in 2003 and led the Cavaliers to a national championship in 2006. He is currently an all-star attackman for the MLL Chesapeake Bayhawks and led them to a national championship in 2010.
