The Wait is Over Junior transfer Jennifer Poff returns to regular season competition this weekend for the Àrst time since the 2005-06 season, when she was a freshman at Michigan State. Poff sat out the 200607 season per NCAA transfer rules. The 5-5 Michigan native played in 21 games for the Spartans and averaged 2.8 minutes on the court. What a Start In her Àrst year at the helm of Ohio women’s basketball, Sylvia Crawley led the ‘Cats to an 18-12, 10-6 MAC record. The ‘Cats doubled the amount of overall and conference wins from the year before, marking the best debut of any head coach in the program’s 42-year history. Ohio’s 18 wins was the most since the 1994-95 season and marked the third most wins in program history. Scouting Butler Butler enters the 2007-08 campaign with three returning starters and eight letterwinners from a team that advanced to the championship game of the 2007 Horizon League Tournament. The Bulldogs Ànished with a 16-15 overall record and an 11-3 mark in league play, their best totals since the 1998-99 season. After Ànishing second in the NCAA Division I with 8.4 three pointers made per game, the Bulldogs will turn to the play of it’s post players to drive the offense in 2007-08. Junior center Lade Akande and sophomore forward Susan Lester are the top returning scorers and rebounders from last season, with Akande netting 14.1 pointldogss and 5.1 boards and Lester posting 9.6 points and 6.6 rebounds. Senior forward and co-captain Cassie Freeman brings leadership to the Áoor and adds an outside threat to the post position after notching 31 three pointers at a rate of 35.2 percent. Junior guard Tara Miller, who sat out the Bulldogs’ Àrst nine games of 2006-07, begins her Àrst full season with the team after Ànishing second with 76 assists while averaging 7.5 points per game. The point guard spot could be Àlled by junior Candace Jones, who Ànished last season on a tear by averaging over eight points and nearly four rebounds in the Ànal nine contests of the year. Senior Candace Bain and sophomore Mel Thornton will add depth at the post positions, while junior Candyce Brown brings a defensive presence on the perimeter. Five of the six newcomers totaled 1,000 or more points during their high school careers and could be counted on for signiÀcant playing time during the year. Bobcats in the Community Wellworks Pumpkinfest On Saturday, October 20th, the team volunteered for a community event at the Dairy Barn Arts Center that welcomed more than 200 children and their families for a free day of art activities, pumpkin carving, games and much more. The team did everything from help children with their fall projects to paint children’s faces with their favorite Halloween designs. They also stayed after to help with the clean-up effort. “Ohio University athletes who are willing to show a commitment to this community by spending part of their weekend volunteering is an act that should be recognized and praised,” said Andrea Lewis, executive director of the Dairy Barn Arts Center. “Overall it was a very successful event, and we received a lot of praise from the Athens Community. Habitat for Humanity Bobcats Carolyn Barnett and Chandra Myers volunteered in Nelsonville, Ohio for a female build project for Habitat for Humanity. The project director said that the ‘Cats did a great job. Barnett and Myers said they were happy to have participated in the project because they met members of the community who supported Ohio women’s basketball. Women’s Basketball Wins Bobcat Cup The women’s basketball team was also the winner of last year’s Bobcat Cup, a competition that challenges Ohio sports teams to earn the most points in eight categories: Academic Excellence, Athletic Excellence, Community Service, Personal Development, Career Development, Athletes Supporting Athletes, SAAC Involvement and Above and Beyond. For the accomplishment, the team received $500 toward their budget. The team showed the strongest representation at SAAC meeting, participated in the Women in Sport activity on campus, held a minicamp at the Plains Elementary School, collected money for the MAC SAAC Penny Bowl at the spring football game, attended the most home sporting events, was involved in the Big Sisters program, volunteered at the Nelsonville Correction Facility, worked Kids Fest and participated in diversity training sessions with the athletics department. The Bobcat coaches also contributed by speaking at a Title IX brunch at area high school’s athletic banquets. 4

Final Wrap With a 79-69 quarterÀnal loss to Eastern Michigan in the MAC Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena, the 2006-07 Ohio Women’s basketball season came to a close. The Bobcats Ànished up with an 18-12 mark overall, including a 10-6 record in league play. Lauren Kohn was named to the All-MAC 2nd Team, Rachel Frederick was named to the All-MAC 3rd Team, and Jennifer Bushby was named to the All-Freshman Team. The ‘Cats lose one senior, center Domenica Silva, who Ànished her career after averaging 8.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game in the 2006-07 campaign. Silva Ànishes her career in 3rd place on Ohio’s career blocks list with 54 career blocks. Looking Back Last Time Out: Junior Lauren Kohn (Adrian, Mich.) led all scorers with 25 points as the Ohio women’s basketball team lost to Eastern Michigan, 79-69, in the quarterÀnals of the 2007 MAC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Cleveland, Ohio. Kohn shot 42.1 percent from the Àeld, connecting on 8-of-19 shots and was 66.7% from beyond the arc, hitting 4-of-6. From the free throw line, Kohn made 5-of-9 attempts as she played a team-high 39 minutes. Junior Rachel Frederick (Gibsonia, Pa.) and senior Domenica Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had 12 points apiece as they hit 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) and 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from the Àeld, respectively. Both were perfect at the charity stripe with Frederick connecting on 1of-1 and Silva on 2-of-2. Silva led the Bobcats with eight rebounds and scored 10 of her 12 points in the Àrst half, as she helped the Bobcats cut a nine-point deÀcit to six at the half. Freshman Jennifer Bushby (Gahanna, Ohio) had 10 points, eight assists and Àve rebounds while junior Quintana Ward (Park Forest, Ill.) chipped in eight points. The Bobcats shot 44.1 percent from the Áoor, connecting on 26-of59 attempts and 66.7% from the free throw line, hitting 12-of-18. The Bobcats grabbed 28 rebounds to the Eagles’39. After being plagued with foul trouble and trailing at the break, Ohio Àred back in the second half and trimmed a nine-point EMU to two, 44-42, with 15:12 left in the game. Kohn scored the Bobcats Àrst six points of the half, including back-to-back triples. Ohio then went on a 4-0 run as Ward hit two free throws and Bushby made a bucket that sparked an Ohio comeback. Eastern Michigan increased its lead to seven, 51-44, at 12:26, but the Bobcats would not back down and back-to-back baskets by Kohn and Frederick kept Ohio in the game as the `Cats were able to come within two again, 54-52 at the 10-minute mark from a layup by Silva and two free throws from Bushby. That would be the closest the `Cats would get as Eastern Michigan built a 13-point lead and made their last four attempts at the free throw line to grab the win.
