Aboard Kuranda Scenic Railway, you’ll discover the natural beauty of a World Heritage-listed rainforest millions of years old and the railway’s chapter in the pioneering history of Tropical North Queensland. In 1882 desperate calls from miners in the Tablelands region for a railway to Cairns was heard after a prolonged North Queensland wet season. The Cairns-Kuranda Railway was constructed between 1882 and 1891 and even today is considered an engineering feat of tremendous magnitude. The history of North Queensland stands as testimony to the splendid ambitions, fortitude and suffering of the hundreds of men engaged in its construction. It also stands as a monument to the many men who lost their lives on this amazing project. On the 15 June 1891, the railway line opened to Kuranda and exactly 10 days later Kuranda Scenic Railway, the first tourist train, arrived in Kuranda the village in the rainforest. Heritage wooden carriages are hauled by 1720 class locomotives adorned in indigenous Buda-dji colours, portraying the legend of Buda-Dji, the carpet snake, said to have carved out the Barron Gorge. Taking you 328 metres above sea level, the Kuranda Scenic Railway meanders past waterfalls, through 15 hand-made tunnels and over 37 bridges, from Cairns through the Barron Gorge National Park to picturesque Kuranda.
