RHO SORORITY, INC. BETA OMICRON SIGMA CHAPTER NOVEMBER 12, 2022 UNC-CHARLOTTE MARRIOTT HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTER
What started as the vision of seven young educators has flourished into a reality of over 100,000 women dedicated to “Greater Service, Greater Progress”. In 100 years, we have truly made an impact to improving the quality of life for women and children civically, socially and economically. Here in Charlotte, it was the courage of 15 women that built the foundation for what Beta Omicron Sigma (BOS) is today.
It brings me the greatest joy to be able to serve as the Centennial President of the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter, which consists of more than 150 committed members. Over the past year, we have surpassed even my wildest dreams as we aligned our vision of GREATER I.M.P.A.C.T. (Innovating through Measured Progress, Aligned in Communication and Training) with that of our international office. The chapter has embraced new technology much like the rest of the world with grace and flexibility. We have seen increased participation and engagement with the community and our membership as we worked to provide professional development and a wide array of services. We have provided over $5,000 in scholarship funds, donated over 20,000 school supplies to Classroom Central, supported and appreciated three local schools, honored our veterans, mentored the youth and so much more.
As elated as we may be to celebrate 100 years, we know that this milestone is still only the beginning. This occasion commemorates the challenges overcome and the growth sustained over a century, but we are a sisterhood always looking to the future. Today we celebrate the accomplishments of the first 100 years with our sights set on the promises of the tomorrow. We thank all those who have supported us thus far on this journey and ask that you continue to sustain, encourage and hold us accountable as we seek to further our cause.
Deepest Regards,
Dr. Courtney Smith-Orr

FROM THE CENTENNIAL PRESIDENT | BETA OMICRON SIGMA CHAPTER
FROM THE GALA CHAIR | BETA OMICRON SIGMA CHAPTER
To My Sorors of the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.:
We made it! 100 Years! Today is a very special occasion. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has turned 100. As we celebrate our 100th Anniversary, we share our pride in the achievements of our Seven Founders and the visions of our leaders that came afterwards that advanced us to this day.
Tonight, the members, along with our affiliates, families and friends are celebrating this historic event to honor our illustrious founders and the work that has been accomplished over the last 100 years. We have reached this pinnacle in our history and are looking forward to the next 100 years of providing GREATER service, GREATER progress.
Our herstory as the only NPHC sorority founded at a predominantly white campus amid bigotry and separation shows the determination and bravery of our founders. In spite of these turbulent beginnings, our founders were courageous and their persistence paid off. Because of these attributes and the strong foundation which they established; our future is promising.
I am truly honored to have served as the Chair for the Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter Centennial Gala, REIGN: Celebrating 100 Years of Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. It has been a true labor of love, happiness and excitement to reach this milestone in our history and it is our hope that you will enjoy the festivities we have planned for this event. I want to thank the Centennial Gala Committee for all of your hard work, planning and preparing for the Gala as we strive to REIGN and IMPACT the Queen City through our continued community service activities and partnerships. Tomorrow will be the start of the next 100 years. By standing on solid grounds built by our founders and current leaders, I am sure our sorority will grow even stronger not only within our local community but around the world as well. As I look around the room this evening, I know our organization is in excellent hands. I salute the members of the next generation and look forward to what is to come. Thank you again for your love and sisterhood as we continue to be GREATER 100+ more years!

ABOUT Sigma Gamma Rho
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922, in Indianapolis, Indiana, by seven young educators. The group became an incorporated national collegiate sorority on December 30, 1929, when a charter was granted to the Alpha chapter at Butler University. Since its inception, the dynamic women of Sigma Gamma Rho have built and sustained a wellknown and well-respected reputation for leading positive change to help uplift the community through sisterhood, leadership, and service.
Sigma Gamma Rho has welcomed more than 100,000 collegiate and professional women from every profession. The sorority has more than 500 chapters in the United States, Bahamas, Bermuda, Canada, Germany, South Korea, U.S. Virgin Islands, and the United Arab Emirates. The organization also has active affiliate groups devoted to empowering women at different stages in life. The Rhoer Club, Rhosebuds and Philos Affiliates (friends of the sorority) also assist alumnae chapters with various service efforts and programs.
Sigma Gamma Rho’s commitment to service is expressed in its slogan, “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” The sorority has a proud history of providing positive and proactive community outreach nationally and internationally. The programs, partnerships, and sponsorships represent Sigma Gamma Rho’s commitment to promoting the greater good in education, service, and leadership development. In 2004, the National Headquarters moved from Chicago, Illinois to its current home in Cary, North Carolina. Sigma women are dedicated to helping each other and their personal success is recognized in The AURORA and through various awards.

Beta Omicron Sigma History
Carrie Quander was a talented musician and school teacher in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1950, she paid a visit to the then Northeast Region Syntaktes, Annie Neville, in Rocky Mount (NC). It was during this visit that Carrie conceived the idea of chartering a chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority in Charlotte. Filled with excitement and enthusiasm, Carrie returned to Charlotte with one goal in mind. She was able to garner the interest of fourteen other women and on December 2, 1950, they would charter Beta Omicron Sigma - the 101st chapter of the sorority. All fifteen charter members were school teachers. Since then, Beta Omicron Sigma has chartered four undergraduate chapters, established Philo, Rhoer and Rhosebud affilliate groups, helped to establish the Yellow Tea Rose Foundation of North Carolina, donated thousands of dollars and countless supplies to those in need, as well as thousands of hours in service to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community. Today, Beta Omicron Sigma proudly boasts a diverse membership of 160+ members representing a variety of professions and fields.
Our Affiliates
PHILO AFFILIATE
Since its inception, Sigma Gamma Rho has promoted unity among women and for years many alumnae chapter worked with individuals who were not members of Greek-lettered organizations. These women were organized into auxiliaries that had various names until 1954 when the sorority officially approved the organized affiliate group and accepted the name of “Philo” (meaning Friend) as their official name.
In 1980 the Philos were organized on a national level and have grown to represent hundreds of women organized on a regional level as well. The Philos have contributed countless hours of community service and thousands of dollars to aid Sigma Gamma Rho’s aim to enhance the quality of life within every community.
BOS has been lucky to partner with an exceptional group of women. The Beta Omicron Sigma Philo Affiliate was one of ten affiliates to be established when the Northeast Region Philos were organized. Induction was held on April 27, 1984 with charter members Philo President Peggy McCain, Vice-President Philo Cubia Spaulding, Secretary Philo Sandra Sutton, and Treasurer Philo Cathy McIlwain. The advisors were Mentzie Johnson and Lavenia Young.
The Philos accepted the challenge to promote “Greater Service, Greater Progress” in the Charlotte area, as well as surrounding entities. They continue to support Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated, the Beta Omicron Sigma Rhoer Club and Rhosebuds, as well as the National Pan-Hellenic Council in their endeavors.
The Philos strive to promote community service for which Sigma Gamma Rho was founded. In the past, they have participated in walks/runs, such as the March of Dimes, telethons for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Adopt-aFamily, voter registration drives, Adopt-a-Highway street cleanups, and the annual Sigma Youth Symposium.
The Beta Omicron Sigma Philo Affiliate has been recognized with numerous awards on the regional level.
RHOER CLUB
The Rhoer Club is an affiliate organization founded in 1939 for teenage girls. A love for youth and the development of their full potential was the primary motivating factor that inspired Founder Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little to organize Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Young people today face challenges that could never have been imagined years ago, but such challenges provide the sorority with opportunities to carry on the vision of Little.
Rhoer Clubs provide young women ages 12 to 18 with positive experiences in leadership development, academic counseling, personal counseling, mentoring, community service, and rites of passage. Sigma Gamma Rho is dedicated to helping Rhoers to grow to be women of substance dedicated to service.Family, voter registration drives, Adopt-aHighway street cleanups, and the annual Sigma Youth Symposium.
RHOSEBUD CLUB
The Rhosebud Club is an affiliate group of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. consisting of a diverse group of girls ages 8 through 11 years of age. Delicate like the petals of a rosebud, this affiliate group is handled with special care and attention.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. seeks to play a role in helping to cultivate girls as they grow into young ladies who are well-rounded and will embody the qualities needed to be good students and productive citizens. We feel this can be best achieved through action that will contribute to the overall well-being of the Rhosebud.

Acquanetta Edmond
West Learning Superintendent Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools
Acquanetta graduated from Newberry High School in 1991 and knew she wanted to become an educator because of her time with the Teacher Cadet Program. Early on, she learned the importance of determination and was determined to do something different. She was the 2nd in her family to graduate from college and the first to graduate with academic honors. As a child, she played school all the time, and because she never saw a teacher of color, she set a goal to serve as a role model for Black boys and girls. It was important for black boys and girls to see the possibilities that could impact their lives. She has maintained this focus throughout her educational career.
In 1996, she became employed with CMS as a 6th grade teacher at Greenway Park Elementary School. In 2000, she became a Principal Fellow, which provided a full scholarship that allowed her to serve in a committed capacity while serving in an urban school district with the commitment to minimize the achievement gap. When she graduated from UNC Charlotte, she was awarded a dual degree in School Administration and Curriculum and Instruction; she graduated Cum Laude, which was a huge accomplishment.
After working as a literacy facilitator, Acquanetta received the opportunity to serve as the assistant principal, then principal, at Lake Wylie Elementary School. In 2009, River Gate opened as a brand-new school, and she was the leader at River Gate for two years. Because of the rich instructional practices and aggressive monitoring, River Gate made high growth in the first year of inception. Her next opportunity was to do turnaround work at Hickory Grove Elementary School. The school made high growth for the first time in six years.
After being a servant leader in the schools in Charlotte, she had the opportunity to have a more significant impact by serving as the Executive Director in 2019 at the Central, South and Southwest Learning Communities before becoming the Community Superintendent in the Northwest Learning Community. Leading 28 schools through a pandemic was a challenge, but she was proud to say that approximately 95% of them met or exceeded growth according to the 21-22 state test results. Two of the schools exited Low Performing Status. She is currently the West Learning Superintendent, where she supports 16 schools in the western region of Charlotte. Her mantra is that the West is the best and she has leaders and students who work diligently to raise the bar for student achievement.

Wanda is a proud retiree from the U. S. Army, where she served for 22 years and received several distinguished awards and accolades. After retiring from the military, she wanted to continue to help and support young people in the community. Wanda was introduced to substitute teaching, which she did for six months, after which, she was hooked. She realized she loved teaching and seeing the bright light when students understood and embraced the lesson. She became a full-time Career, Technical & Education (CTE) teacher with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). As a CTE teacher, she introduced students to scholarship opportunities and speakers who were already working in the fields they were interested in becoming one day. She loved teaching women and people of color about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) because of the low representation from this population segment in these STEM fields.
Wanda has since retired from teaching, but says if she could motivate, encourage and make a positive difference in one student’s life and career, her time as a teacher was well served.
In 2016, Wanda was introduced to the best sorority in the world. She became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, a great sisterhood, through the Spring 2016 TORCH class. Through this sorority, she would not only be able to serve the community, but the world abroad.
Wanda says, “God gave me the gift to serve and share, and I thank Him today and every day for this gift. I am proud to do both when given the opportunity. I am blessed to have a loving husband and daughter who feel the same way. God is Good, and Life is great.”

I gained inspiration from my favorite scripture, Proverbs 3:5-6, and found greater meaning in my breast cancer journey, harnessing the spirit of endurance from within. As a survivor, I have decided to share my story everywhere I go in the hope that I will have influence in someone’s life.”

Marizen Sawyer
Public Relations & Marketing Committee Beta Omicron Sigma Chapter
Marizen graduated from UNC-Charlotte with a Bachelor’s degree in English and a concentration in Secondary Education. In the Spring of 1999, she became a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. through the Nu Rho Chapter. As it is with most people just starting out in their career, Marizen never could have imagined where life would take her.
Following graduation, Marizen began working for the Cumberland County Schools as a 10th grade English teacher, Forensics (Speech & Debate) teacher & coach, and step team advisor. Over several years, she coached multiple students to state championships and national level tournaments. However, despite her love of sharing literature with her students, Marizen would leave the classroom and return to Charlotte. In 2010, she earned her Master of Library and Information Studies degree from UNC-Greensboro. Unfortunately, because of the slow recovery from the downturn in the economy, many libraries were still in a hiring freeze and Marizen was unable to find employment, so she chose to focus on her roles as wife and stay-at-home mom.
All the while, Marizen stayed active in Sigma Gamma Rho. As a member of Beta Omicron Sigma since 2006, she served on committees and in roles such as secretary and historian, which required her to take on tasks related to marketing for the chapter and its events. With the rise of social media and digital marketing, Marizen recognized the potential and need to elevate the chapter’s brand. Determined to set new standards for promotion and impactful messaging, she began to teach herself graphic design and content creation. She used each new project to challenge herself to learn new skills from creating Powerpoint presentations and websites to retractable banners. Eventually, members from other chapters were reaching out to hire her for their own marketing projects.
What began as making flyers and programs for Beta Omicron Sigma quickly turned into a new career as a freelance graphic designer. Within the sorority, Marizen has quietly been working to develop content for local chapters across the country, as well as working on campaigns at the national and regional levels including regional conferences and even custom day planners. Beyond Sigma, Marizen has created for a diverse clientele from political candidates and playwrights to charitable foundations and corporations. Marizen always attributes her success outside of the sorority to the many Sorors who hired her to create for their own businesses or referred her to other organizations and is grateful for the continued support of Beta Omicron Sigma.
