While the holiday season comes with things that may bring us joy family reunions, holiday food, gifts, and holiday parties - for many people, they can also experience overwhelming stress. Military members and families may be especially affected by the stressors of the holidays as they are away from their homes, families, and support systems.

If you, or a family member, are in need of additional support, please reach out to the Community Counseling Program at (703) 784-2570 and speak to one of our counselors.

• Set achievable goals: Setting goals that are out of reach may lead to feelings of sadness, disappointment, and hopelessness. • Talk more: Talking to a friend or family member is a good way to alleviate stress and get support. • Take breaks: Taking breaks throughout the day, helps to create a better sense of balance and wellbeing. • Set healthy boundaries: Having time for yourself to unplug and unwind each day, gives you a chance to recharge and feel mentally and physically more balanced. • Exercise: Exercising 30 minutes per day has been shown to alleviate stress, while improving physical health and wellness.

JANUARY TIP OF THE MONTH

Happy New Year! Have you thought about your goals for 2022? Sometimes it can be helpful to set a larger goal, break it down into smaller steps, and set deadlines along the way to evaluate your progress toward the goal so that you feel the success of accomplishment! The FOCUS program helps families to set goals and break them down into smaller steps that can be achieved…Don’t just get by, get stronger!

FOCUS services are available for active duty service members and their family or partner via the virtual TeleFOCUS program, allowing families and couples to meet with a FOCUS Provider through video teleconference. We have also begun to reoffer our services by appointment in our local office if you prefer in person sessions. FOCUS sessions allow families and couples to build their own story about military life experiences. This helps them to: • Build on current strengths • Feel closer and more supported • Identify, manage, and discuss emotions • Use problem-solving and goal-setting to empower the entire family • Clarify misunderstandings and respect individual points of view To enroll in FOCUS or continue your sessions, contact your local FOCUS site at Quantico@focusproject.org or call 703.784.0189. For a full listing of FOCUS Sites, visit: http://focusproject.org/contact For more information about TeleFOCUS, visit: https://focusproject.org/telefocus
