JULY The flexibility of the summer months may be an exciting time for vacations, sunshine, and relaxation, but for some, the lack of structure may cause feelings of being overwhelmed, or a loss of control. Here are 5 tips to help build mental resiliency during the summer months: • Spend time outdoors: Exposure to sunlight increases vitamin D and serotonin, both of which boost mood.

• Maintain a healthy sleep schedule: Even though summer has more flexibility, try to have a consistent sleep routine to keep the body balanced.

• Plan an affordable getaway: Planning a few long weekends will give you several changes of scenery and routine, without putting too much strain on your finances.

• Stay active: Physical activity has been shown to boost mood, while keeping the body healthy.

• Enjoy your vacation time: Try to focus on positive self-care and spending time with loved ones, while refraining from doing work or household tasks.

FAMILY READINESS

FAMILY OVERCOMING UNDER STRESS FOR A FULL LISTING OF FOCUS SITES, VISIT: FOCUSPROJECT.ORG/CONTACT. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT TELEFOCUS, VISIT: FOCUSPROJECT.ORG/TELEFOCUS.

2034 Barnett Ave., Little Hall, 703.784.0189 Quantico@FOCUSproject.org JULY TIP OF THE MONTH July is America’s birthday month! A time for firecrackers, celebrations, longer summer days, family gatherings, and spreading wings for new adventures. We all love spending time with those who are special to us, but sometimes it can also highlight areas of conflict or stress. The FOCUS program teaches families and couples how to show respect and have positive interactions with one another. We practice effective communication by using “I” statements and identifying “hot” topics that cause us to “lose our cool”. FOCUS offers tools to help regulate those “hot” emotions and improve communication skills. Stay Cool! Call FOCUS today for more information. Don’t just get by, get stronger!

FOCUS services are available for active duty service members and their family or partner via the virtual TeleFOCUS program, allowing families and couples to meet with a FOCUS Provider through video teleconference. We have also begun to reoffer our services by appointment in our local office if you prefer in person sessions. FOCUS sessions allow families and couples to build their own story about military life experiences. This helps them to: • Build on current strengths • Feel closer and more supported • Identify, manage, and discuss emotions • Use problem-solving and goal-setting to empower the entire family • Clarify misunderstandings and respect individual points of view To enroll in FOCUS or continue your sessions, contact your local FOCUS site at Quantico@focusproject.org or call 703.784.0189.

For a full listing of FOCUS Sites, visit: http://focusproject.org/contact For more information about TeleFOCUS, visit: https://focusproject.org/telefocus
