It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the QCSO’s 105th Season! We are excited to present a dynamic season that tells of the Human Experience. We explore the highs and the lows, the conflict, love, and passion of being human – all through the power of live music. We celebrate the legacy of Walt Whitman whose powerful voice captured the experience of so many during one of our country’s darkest hours. His voice speaks of the human toll that war can take and inspires us to compassion and service. You’ll hear his words through the lens of John Adams and a QCSO commission by composer David Dzubay. Shostakovich tells us of another great struggle — the siege of Leningrad — through his monumental 7th Symphony, a work heralded in the United States at a time when freedom itself was under siege. We commemorate the 100th Anniversary of Veteran’s Day with performances of this masterpiece and more. And we turn to two of music’s greatest opera composers to tell us stories of love and loss — Verdi and Wagner. Verdi’s Requiem speaks to the frailty of human existence and dramatically intones the moving Latin text of the Requiem Mass. Wagner paints a picture of love and courage in his Die Walküre, which features the North American premiere of a stunning production as powerful and passionate as the music itself. And what an amazing cast of singers that will be joining us in the Quad Cities! Add Prokofiev’s amazing ballet score to Romeo and Juliet, Brahms First Symphony, and so much more for another season of stimulating and powerful concerts. We are committed to connecting great music with every one of our audience members and to connecting with and reaching new listeners as well. In addition to our expanding QCSO at the Movies series we are also thrilled to present Living Proof Exhibit Opera, a powerful new commission providing hope and celebrating the stories of those fighting cancer and all who love and care for them. We approach each and every program as an opportunity to share the passion and drama of great orchestral music and to reach and enrich the lives of all Quad Citizens. Thank you for sharing your lives with us and for your support, both through your faithful attendance and your monetary gifts. We simply could not do it without you. As so many of you have told me, we are indeed fortunate to have a treasure like the QCSO in our midst. I could not agree more. The musicians and I cannot wait to share the drama of the Human Experience with you! With profound gratitude,

Mark Russell Smith Music Director and Conductor
