Welcome

Welcome to the QCSO’s 104th Season! There are only a handful of orchestras in our country that can boast such a number, and that tells so much about who we are, where we have been, and where we intend to go. This season is all about connections -- connections from our past to our present and future, and connections with our community in ever-deepening ways. We connect with the Figge Museum and its incredible French Moderns exhibit. We connect and celebrate the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, who is part of the QCSO’s history in a number of ways. We re-connect with the symphonies of Gustav Mahler, whose music has a great performance history here. And we celebrate the Quad Cities in the season’s final concert with a commissioned piece about us, from composer James Stephenson. We are committed to connecting great music with every one of our audience members, and to connecting with and reaching new listeners as well. We are all so very grateful to you, our listeners, for your support of what we do. We approach each and every program as an opportunity to share the passion and drama of great orchestral music and to reach and enrich the lives of all Quad Citizens. Thank you for sharing your lives with us, and for your support, both through your faithful attendance and your monetary gifts. We simply could not do it without you. As so many of you have told me, we are indeed fortunate to have a treasure like the QCSO in our midst. I could not agree more. The musicians and I cannot wait to connect with you! With profound gratitude,

Mark Russell Smith Music Director and Conductor

The QCSO continues its grand tradition of presenting the Masterworks of Gustav Mahler with Symphony No. 9. Completed shortly before his death, this four-movement work is often considered both his farewell and his most deeply personal score. This expansive symphony of profound introspection is some of Mahler’s most spiritual and heartfelt music.
