SPECULATE Speculation is inherent in the process of design. Much speculation, for students, have occured in the context of design studios where one is given opportunity to speculate the future relationships between buildings and environment. The opportunities provided from an undergraduate to a graduate context, has made me realize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to architecture. Architecture is in itself, an encapsulation of society, history, politics, environment, amongst many others. The following projects seeks to push the boundaries of what current architectural practices are, in the hopes of providing speculation for the possibility of integrative and innovative futures.


PLACE TANSEY MASTER PLAN, POINTE ST-CHARLES, MONTREAL, QC FIRST PLACE WINNER QUAN THAI & MYLENE MOLINER-ROY A MASTERPLAN FOR THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF POINTE ST-CHARLES AT THE CURRENT RAYMONT LOGISTICS SITE. THE PLAN WAS CONCEIVED AROUND THE SPECULATIONSA AROUND ECOLOGICAL AND AGRICULTURAL “PONIC” SYSTEMS TO BRING NEW RESEARCH AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT TO THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY.

00 WALKING THE CITY:

STE CATHERINE STREET AS A SPINE FOR PLAYSCAPES

The notion of a walk fosters the possibilities of functioning as a creative tool. The walk has, historically been applied as a method of primitive necessity. Over time, the engagement of the walk has facilitated creative explorations that engage the user with not only one’s senses, but with the environment. Benjamin’s flanuer, to the application of the walk from Richard Long has proven that the walk is a tool of criticality. It engages the user within the surrounding environment. It is, however, up to the users urban embodiment that will allow latent qualities of these environments to be revealed. The thesis explores the walk as a creative device in order to discover the latent qualties of the city. Architectural and urban interventions are being studied in order to allow for the wanderer to engage in the city in ways more than the current commercial mecca’s and desire for efficiency through technology. Ste Catherine Street, Montreal functions as the spine for invetigation, critical analysis, and speculative play.

STREET ANALYSIS: CURRENT CONDITIONS Ste. Catherines Street, being one of Montreal’s most famous street has been an anchor of cultural and urban development for the city starting in the late 19th century. Over time, the streets image has morphed from a developing streetscape, to its “Golden Age”, and down to a state of deterioration. Having gone through urban revitalization, the street is said to have made a comeback as a spine for engagement. Through personal investigations and walks down the street, of activity and accessbility, it is seen that portions of the street are filled with activity, where as others are still in deterioration. Through rigorous site analysis, the embodied walk has allowed for a purging of information that has lead to the selection of six different sites along the street that have the potential for interventions that react to the ntoions of walking as a leisurely experience.

SCHEMATIC PROGRAM LOOP

Street analysis and selection of sites have lead to speculative programmatic relationships that can incorporate latent elements discovered through the embodied walk, as well as the context in the environment. The walk, functioning as a solitary and leisurely experience sees an encounter of possiblity amongst the transition to a collective and recreational experience. The transition from the solitary to the collective engages a threshold of choice in which the user can engage in. This threshold holds the possiblity of playful engagement, allowing for the transition from solitary to collective to be one of playful, imaginative space of choice and crossing.

HYBRID SITE ANALYSIS: TEXT, PHOTOGRAPHS, SKETCHES, 3D, ARTICLES

Individual analysis of each site through a hybrid process involving the memory, technology and the factual allow for a unique perspective into the conditions of a site. By doing so, the analysis provides a multi-directional approach to understanding various elements of the environment, not limited to one perspective. The analyses have functioned as a platform for speculating the contextual and potential developments of an area, as can be shown from Site 4. First iterations involve interactive playscapes that engage in the topological conditions of existing site conditions. The transitions lead to recreational activities on rooftops that exhaust atmospheric qualities, engaging multiple dimensions of curiosity and wonder, as one crosses the street below.

01 SUBLIMINAL [SPA]BURB

The conditions of a suburban environment have created a state of living that functions primarily for the purpose of self-motivated rituals. Public gathering is dispersed intermittently where there may be lack of residential development, but still functions as a monotonous regime, rather than one that unites a collective. How can this condition be pushed, where the interaction between individuals unify into a collective space and create a new sense of interaction between one and another, and one and the environment? If a communal centre was (re)created, how can it involve one with not just himself? The creation of a series of microclimatic conditions, informed by the primitive characteristics of the site and integrated with an investigated landscape design and energy manifesto. The development of the spa formalizes a porous, but secured typology in which one is in constant interaction with one self, nature, climate and ones neighbour. ENERGY MANIFESTO: Primitive sustainability is achieved through the characteristics of the sun. The functions of these pavillions (in plan) orient themselves to their adjacent seasonal solstice: hot spa to the summer solstice, cold spa to the winter: Roofs are sloped at optimum angles to accomodate for the amount of energy required to maintain comfort levels in respective area: Cold Program roofs orient to summer sun to gather as much energy as possible to cool, Hot Program to winter solstice as they would need be in an over abundance of energy. With integration of highly insulated walls, glazing and sustainable site strategies, SPA(s) is a series of high energy conservators and low energy consumers.

02 [AERO]PORT: EDIBLE EFFICIENCY

Efficiency is a dominating factor in how a business may succeed. Efficiency is often spoken of, but quite difficult to achieve. In fast-paced life style such as North America, the constant need for tasks to be completed quickly and efficiently are a challenge many have yet to overcome. Given a lot on a proposed Air Belt, in what means may the advantage of having international transporation at such close proximity affect the local and international community? ~ RESPONSE: [AERO]PORT Similar to the displacement of people from one area to another, agriculture is often an overlooked industry as to how inefficient the displacement of crops travel from one side of the world to the other. In an attempt to reduce the carbon footprint of such transit, as well as the efficiency of the entire industry, why not allow a farm to be placed within the proximities of an airport? AEROPONIC FARMING seems fitting to the function of an airport, no? By doing so, there is a reduced travel time from getting the crops to the airport. It may also function as a catalyst for further agricultural and efficiencybased techonlogies and innovations.

AEROPONIC

FARMING:

Aeroponics is the process of growing plants and vegetation in nutrient-filled air, in place of soil and aggregate. They are grown in contained environments where plants are placed onto crates where plant crowns grow above, and roots dangle below. Nutrient-filled water is misted onto these plants allowing them to grow faster and healthier then those grown in soil aggregate. AIRPORT SECTION MORPHOLOGY

03 THE INTERCHANGE

The urban fabric of a city encompasses both built and unbuilt form. As built form is clearly delegated for a specific use, how does one clearly delegate the undefined, unbuilt spaces? These spaces are flexible in a way that allows its users to appropriate its programme. Various users can appropriate these spaces for their specific uses through out the duration of a day, where one space can easily change into something that it previously was not. The intersection of College Street and Spadina Ave transect and weave together the fragments of the city that speak to the appropriation of spaces. A mixed-used large urban building located at the intersection of major districts in Toronto, the INTERCHANGE houses the offices of the tech-savvy Autodesk Corporation. The building hosts four primary precincts that engage its inhabitants, invites passers-by and allow interaction with citizens of all : the invitation, where citizens are invited into the ground floor with a unique, dynamic experience ; the mixer where artists, intellects, and the curious interact; the live/work studios for classes of all sorts; and the Autodesk office spaces.

04 BIOMUSE:

A BIOMETHANATION FACILITY in an Urban Environment

With the intent to create a masterplan that is synergistic amongst the site through food, energy, production and cultural processes, the proposal functions as a facility that creates a dialogue between industrial processes and the broadened community of Pointe-St-Charles. Undesirable conditions of waste treatment facilities fabricate a sense of displeasure among communities. The Biomuse will respond to the local needs of the plan as well as address Montreal’s Planned Organic Materials Management Facilities for the increase in biowaste management whilst raising awareness of the primitive nature of waste processing through active engagement. The project seeks to integrate the Waste to Energy Plant into its adjacent community by addressing conditions of site as well as pushing the boundaries of the stereotypical waste facility. The result is a didactic and integrative experience. As typical to industrial facilities, biomenthanation plants face various issues due to the production of smell, sound, heat and undesirable visibility. In a means to mediate this distaste, the proposal seeks to integrate technical and natural solutions that will moderate these conditions. The controlled exploitation of these conditions has the capability to integrate the undesirable factors with user experience, creating unique and engaging atmospheres.

The linear biomethanation process serves as an intriguing concept of the configuration of spaces, where input of waste and output of biogas and digestate, foster unique learning experiences as users are exposed to certain elements of the process. The subliminal aesthetic seeks to drive curiosity, experiential investigation as well as hands on didactic learning. The linearity of the process is broken down further into the direct process of the bio-waste production as a whole and the loop created amongst the in-vessel digesters. This loops function as a fulcrum of pedestrian circulation and program integration. The uniqueness of the proposal stems from dismantling the notion of a waste facility as an undesired typology that should be hidden from view. Pushing the undesirable conditions of a site and reconfiguring them to create unique didactic experiences engage the community in a means that heightens PointeSt Charles and Montreal as a city dedicated to the reclamation of waste.

As the masterplan involves multiple building types and typologies, as well as unique site conditions, BIOMUSE aims to address the differences by creating cohesive exterior spaces with integrative interior spaces.

The process of design has lead to the address of neighbourhood programs by creating a manipulated landscape allowing for engagement of adjacent users . For example, accessibility from Bridge Street onto the rooftop of the wasteplant allows for access to the adjacent hybrid tower as well as restaurant. The stepped amphitheatre on the rooftop also creats a space of repose to engage in the exterior performances provided by the masterplan’s performance space.

Further site conditions are addressed through the pushing and pulling of the buildings envelope, engaging in visual contact through the pulls, and through implementation of aroma-based vegetation in voids, to allow for mediation of sound and smell.

MAKE The importance of craft and the act of building is inherently fundamental to the field of architecture. The care for craft and detail ultimately speaks to one’s ability to recognize that matters of such a small and tangible scale ultimately play a significant role in shaping the macro-scale. It is with this mentality that I maintain active participation in the act of making and doing, rather than just digitalizing. The practice in craft has been beneficial to my care and attention to detail in both a micro and macro scale.

06 PLAYBOX

ROBERTO BURLE MARX is one of the most influential landscape architects of all time. His investigations in the creation of spaces through shape and colour to inform particular atmospheres resonate in the contextual conditions in which his projects are realized. In an attempt to encapsulate MARX’s play with landscape elements, such as furniture, colour, and shape as tools of active engagement within the environment, we decided collectively to push the boundary of exterior and interior by creating an artificial beach in the atrium of our school. The playbox functions as a primitive space of play in an unexpected environment, linking exterior to interior through the playful reinterpretation of the uses of follies and plantations.

07 SHEPPARD EAST LRT STATION

The models crafted for the Light Rail Transit station at Sheppard East facilitated studies for conceptual explorations. As heated debates have surfaced between the desire for Light Rail or Subway systems have caused much contestation, these investigations were done in a means to integrate both systems in a sensitive, yet aesthetically pleasing manner. The models were hand crafted, in a way to allow for the taking apart of various pieces to allow for constant redesign and development. The sites were studied at two scales in order to get thorough understanding of the project at a detailed, technical level, as well as a contextual community level.

08 DOCUMENTATIONS in ITALY

The act of engaging in ones environment allows the opportunity for a more sensual awareness of one’s surrounding environment. I take opporunities to use sketching and photography as a medium to explore particular urban conditions. The act of sketching and photography is automatically a method of visual synopsis, where one is either consciously or unconsiously filtering out particular aspects as they draw or capture a composition. 2012 was a yaer were I was able to practice and engage in these environments while doing a study abroad term in Rome, Italy. Documentations led to not only the understandings of the building itself, but the atmospheres created with the engagements with the environment and the public.

APPLY The application of my academic knowledge in a professional setting has allowed for a holistic understanding of the field of architecture. The importance of practice has been reflected through my participation in schematic design practices, design development, to post-construction documentation. The dialectic between academia, craft and practice has allowed my experiences to flourish, where my perception has been expanded to a field where speculations are no longer just metaphysical, but have the potential to trangress into reality.

09 WORKac (WORK ARCHITECTURE COMPANY)

Being able to collaborate with a young and dynamic office offered me insight into projects at international scales. WORKac prides itself designing at the intersection of URBAN, RURAL and NATURAL, while remaining highly active in the educational front. My time at WORKac allowed me to develop new insights and processes of architecture that I had not been taught previously. My primary task involved the creation and design development of two 1:100 scale models of ther L’ASSEMBLEE RADIUESE, in GABON, AFRICA. I also played a crucial role in a competition to design a new canopy for one of the original skyscrapers in Moscow, Russia, as well as worked heavily on the masterplan of a new university campus in Weifang, China. The opportunity opened up a creative visions that I thought never possible before.

Gabon’s National Assembly for the African 8-12 Interior Model Union Summit is a building that captures the essence of the country of Gabon, as well as Africa’s natural commodities into one radial building. The building consists of five auditorium venues for conferences and meetings, where three large voids are cut into the building and transformed into

gardens that consist of the flora of Gabon. Consisting of a double skin, the exterior

louvers shelter a radial promenade that wrap around the circumference of the Assembly. Two 1:100 physical models were constructed for exhibition purposes, one exterior model showing the façade, and one interior model showing all the venues. The task was completed in five weeks in a team of four: Lisa Bianchi, Ivan Cremer, Philip Kromer and Quan Thai.

Working closely with a small team, I assisted with the design decisions of this community centre with the lead architect, updated working drawings, designed an exterior bike shelter for LEED credentials, designed interior mill work and drew interior and exterior details. Given a unique opportunity to make design decisions on a much smaller scale has allowed me to to refine my eye for precision. As a huge learning curve, a new outlook on detailing and construction was acquired. My task involved the design development of a recreational centre in the outskirts of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia (now completed, pictured above). I had worked on developing roof and interior details, as well as designing and detailing an exterior bike canopy. In addition, I worked on the ROYAL ALBERT MUSEUM COMPETITION entry and the design development of a large residential

As an internationally reknowned architect, Dominique Perrault’s practice of architecture revolves around the speculation through the permeability of architecture through multidisciplinary dialogues. At DPA, I was involved heavily in the process and design development of many projects ranging in scale. To the right is the facade redesign and renovation of a building adjacent to the Arc de Triomphe de l’Etoile in Paris. I was responsiblie for the design and detailing of the facade into the CD phase. In addition, time was dedicated to speculating and studying the structural and programmatic system s of the new Teaching Bridge at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, where the project was adjacent to SANAA’s Rolex Learning Centre. I was also involved as a designer for a classifed competition for nevw towers in Tokyo, Japan. This competiton involved concept studies, massing studies and speculative details. Models were studied at various scvales (1:100 and 1:500) to gain wider perspectives at the local and contextual scales.
