Inspiration

Inspiration experience: This project began with the question of social phenomenon and personal interest. I found myself quit interest on the behavior of communication. The ideas and imagination of human future contact always trigger the sudden sparkle of ideas in my mind, therefore I really exciting to take this direction as my graduation research direction. When I was walking on the road I found that our body was been bound by different kinds of screen, that people stare on it with setting posture and moving everywhere. With this phenomenon increasingly popular it has been pervasive criticize on artistic works. Therefore, I curious about what the different will design change about it. Furthermore, the communication mode of future life drew my attention on this area. Nowadays the long-distance communication already

occupied most of contact life. Therefore it is necessary to think the remote contact experience. In a word, this direction arouse my mind and think about those problem around it. Should people need to contact with this setting posture? What kind of design that we already have about the negative effect on human body? Does the screen would still as the mainstream of Human-computer interaction? Face to the screen life how human would coordinate the change with environment conditions.

Future Sleep kit discourages people from looking at their phones before bed

The first direction would design for healthy, behavior and psychological illness. Thinking about the research area of addicted concept it would more related to coordinate and distribute the attention between the virtual and real world. It start from the negative effects brought by screen both on mental and physical. The design aims at make people consciously manage and plan using behavior according to the environment elements and physical condition. For example why people can’t stop surfing on the internet? How to control them use it before sleep? Or how the cue the internet addicts?

Artefact's Shadow hoodie immerses wearers in virtual reality

raincoat which could deliver information and a set of installation to remind people the passing time when they follow the repetitive steps. Through simulated use those installation I find that I am interest in the relationship and connection mode between technology and human, the typology of raincoat inspired me on the area of wearable design. Therefore, at this stage I direct my project on the interaction with wearable technology about future remote contact.

Another idea trend to the critical design, which stand back to the instinctive communication requirements. It aim to explore the ideally and enjoyable contact experience. The research area would be relate on the inbred need of interaction, human languages, human way interaction. Based on the remote contact environment to think about the psychological needs and material needs of communication. In order to have the quick notion and make choice of those ideas, I research some project which related to the mobile device. This is a design for people whose sleep quality has been influenced by mobile. Through a set of tool it could cultivate the human behavior. At the start I didn’t totally understand this course, so I try to fuse the objects with my concept together. Therefore, I was made a

For this stage I start to think about the new attachment of human, I list those words about the potential design direction and imagination of this area. For example that the tactile wearable product for the video game, which aims to provide more natural and realistic feeling interactions. Therefore, the aim of the project is to explore the mental and physical feeling created by the technology.

Initial ideas With the questions that I mapping above, I found that the communication experience is closely related to human senses. Therefore I start to explore the human ability through of five sense including eyes, touch, smell, taste, and auditory. Try to learn more about each peculiarity of them by several experience.

Through the test I want to have a deeper understanding of our five senses, understand their receptivity to different kinds of information. - Listening the sound from natural environment - Touch the texture of objects - I used the feather to stimulate the skin - Taste various food I find that our eyes is the most precise reception way, it is suit for receipting the a paragraph of information, but it lack of emotion. Taste has a strong connection with human emotion. A interesting point that hearing and touch create more imagination. Beyond that those sensory brings the immersive experience of virtual world.

Better communication experience Research the ideal experience of interaction In this process, I inspired by those science fiction film and books which shows the possibility of future life. For example, we can experience the environment from longdistance palace by the stimulation of auditory, hearing and tactile. The setting screen would disappear, it means that any place could be used as the screen. The technology of the projects in the fiction has not completed yet, but it shows the ideal state of people’s pursuit.

At this stage, I think about what kind of ability of human could be enhanced by technology, so I list the discern locations of our body. According to the inspiration of friction, I use my imagination to conjecture the future of remote communication.

Take the remote communication into account, people want the more adaptable device which helps them communicate in a natural way. They can feel or see the environment state or human emotion by some device. Machines will become more human, even looks like apart from our body.

Science Technology (Arduino test 1) How to create the haptic feeling. I use the vibration motor to create the tactile feeling on the body. The haptic could transfer emotion through the different frequency and vibration rhythm. Technology trying the test. The first time I learned about the technology I found that

Interview Reflection From the research, people are interested in this idea of fuse sensory into future contact, but I need to think about it more specific for example about what kind of sensorSy would create an enjoyable experience. The contact device is actually an auxiliary means, it aims to narrow the distance between users and also build the inner close

psychology relations between human. Beyond that, the fast speed of society makes people’s communication as a routine, uniform and mediocre experience. People want to get the presence and happiness in the contact process, how technology would help it in the future.

Prototype According to the earlier test, I try to use the haptic and auditory to create an immersion experience about the remote transfer. It is a kind of situation simulation by virtual reality technology.

The scenario in the working in progress could be divide in two direction. The first one is focusing on the emotion delivery by technology, for example when you contact with mother ,you can feel the closely relationship. And also the haptic as a private delivery channel, it is work for the formal public situation. The other one aim at simulate the environment in the distance, which could help people understand the event or information more clear. For example, if the news about the

attack, people could feel hurt on their body and hearing the sound of ambulance, which could create a immersive experience for human. The design language was inspired by the friction design, it is include the transparent and soft material. I use the light color which aim to represent the lightest emotion when we has a enjoyable emotion with others.

Feedback of WIP During the progress show, I got a lot of feedback from the audience. I’m really happy that people show a positive attitude on what will happen for the next generation of remote communication. Personally, it is a meaningful communication experience for collecting the sound from the public especially in the middle stage of design. The harvest could collectively as those points below. It is a rehearsal for the final exhibition. From this experience, I found that the experience of technology part is necessary to be shown on my project. On the WIP show, I didn't make an audience feel the information transfer by Multi-Sensory, it’s really hard to make them totally understand by language. Therefore, for my final exhibition create the technology sample is important. In this progress, I found that the design concept becomes increasingly clear through describing idea by condensed sentences. By concluding the design repetitively I make my design direction and aim more clear. Beyond that, I understand their different preference and interesting point of my idea which would be explored more in the next step.

For the design, I found that I need to find the application area and scenario of this idea, which could make this idea more completely. It is necessary to narrow down my target group and match the sensory advantages with the practical situation. For the next step, I need more interview with the customers. The feedback conclusion: The feedback could be concluded in two directions. One is the form of this project need to be the rethink, because people respond that they feel uncomfortable when something covers their neck, especially during the hot weather. Another is related to the specific user environment and scenario of this idea. Through talking with visitors I find that people with different age group has different opinion.

Re-frame the idea Think about applying area of this device. The actual situation and environment of people has struggle with visual based interaction. The target group should be narrow down and understand their requirements. Movement ,their hands has been taken up, closely contact with family. That people’s hand been taken in some case. Therefore, I decide to research more user which aim to understand their requirement under various environment.

Mentor tutorial During the tutorial, I explain the whole process and idea with Ben. His really interested in the topic how haptic technology could help us in communication. He gives me advice on the frame of the design concept. Beyond that as a director of design company he shares with me his personal experience of dealing hundreds message every day. Ben encouraged me to think about the benefits of haptic communication on the present. We summarize the limitation of visual-based interaction and talk about the negative effect of remote connection. Through this process, it helps me clear my direction which should solve the problem of mass and unorganized receiving state. Feedback: I found that user could be divided into three age groups. For the student and elder group, they are more likely have deep communication because they contact more with closely people including friends, family numbers, and classmates.

Technology experiment Experiment of haptic on body (Haptic test 2) For this idea, I try to take the technology of table. Experiment of haptic on body (Haptic test 3) The test here aim to find the reasonable receptor part on body. This test is based on the feedback of WIP show. The audience feel uncomfortable when they try the prototype on neck, so I choose several sensitive parts of human body to compare according to the sensitivity level, comfort level and immersive experience. Test preparation: Vibration point, Three test objects A B , C, Sensory feedback form,Process: Each object would assess those part of body, which gives specific score on the sensitivity level, comfort level and immersive experience. Through test with five person I got the result below. Result Therefore, comparing with the three elements shoulder is the optimal choice. First of all, shoulder is a relative comfortable part, which

could wear some pieces on. And then this part is around our body, the feeling of wrapping is easier to create immersion feeling for people. It is undeniable that our finger is the most sensitive part. However, fingertips have a wide range of tactile sensations in life. They are not suitable for wearing products and the sense of immersion cannot bring by the stimulation on fingers. In addition, For the position of the neck and the back of the ear, being wrapped will bring a strong sense of discomfort. The vibration stimulation in these two places will give people a sense of tension and fear.

Through the above investigation, I put my design direction on solving the problem of lack of emotion in remote communication and dealing with excessive information. In experiments, we can see that tactile sensation is superior to emotion in the expression of emotional information. In addition, it can get more attention than other sensory sensations. Different levels of touch and location on the body will have different feelings. Therefore, in the next project, I will focus on the development of tactile sensory applications, match tactile sensations with information received on a daily basis, improve the quality of information delivery, and reduce the reception experience of unimportant information by layering information.

Making process Process I was trying several soft materials including PVC, leather, silicon which would suit the human body. I use the transparent material which aims to look invisible and elegant. The accessories and jewelry design were inspired a lot by my project. The idea is making it looks like a piece of a necktie, that user could wear it in a convenient way.

In the model making, I found that the products presented as dots would increase the flexibility, especially for the wearable product on our curve body. Therefore I replace the connection plain to the line.

Prototype feedback A struggle point at here is the creation of immersive experience. Through the first prototype, process finds that the smaller the contact area between the product and the body, the more flexible it will be, but a large contact area can lead to a better feeling of immersion. When the network connection has become the main communication method for people, increasing the emotional communication through the development of sensory applications in interactive devices and helping people solve the problem of single and pattern visual interaction will be the direction that people will pursue in the future. However, after making the model I feel it can’t transfer the feeling of

smart life, biology, and AI concept. The design has been a constraint in the modern office environment and present technology. Through this process, I find that iconic and design language is important because it represents the function and meaning. From the perspective of the user, it would give the user first impression of its function. Beyond that, it is not necessary to think too much about the form of existing technology because it will continue to develop.

Concept evolution Mood board For this stage, I was inspired by the wearable exhibition show in the west of London. I visited the latest research on wearable technology. Miniaturization and software technology is the main development directions of wearable technology. Therefore I try to put this project in the future background and think about how it would more integrate with the body. For the immersive experience creation and product flexibility, I should coordinate those elements and make a reasonable shape for next prototype. Model refinement After determining the approximate shape of the product with a straw pattern, I tried to use sponges and plastic materials to

simulate the material used in the future of the product. My purpose is to like the feeling and form of the product in my mind as much as possible in the form of straw moulding.

After that I did a test about the size of this prototype, I find that the trigger on the shoulder would give more feeling of being surrounded. Therefore, I increased the horizontal length of the product.

Further development In the stage of deepening the concrete form of the model, I need to know its specific form, for example how to combine the shape with the position of the trigger point in the product. Therefore I was doing the prototype by paper. I cut and stick it on the model according to the position of triggering points on body , which is

the quickest way to make sure the shape. After that, I need to think about how to make connection between this piece with body. To reduce the feeling of wearing I use the shoulder strength as the main support point of the product.

In the process of making the above-mentioned straw mold, I have determined the shape of the product, the form of wearing, and the feeling of expression in the appearance. So I began to fabricate the final fabric of the product, and at the same time, I once again scrutinized the design details and rationality of the product.

Feedback In the production of the entire model, I found that the production of hand-made grass patterns is a quick way for me to express my feelings and ideas in my mind. I tried to use rhino software during the first prototype, but I found that the conditions provided by the software are more dataoriented, which to a certain extent limits the designer's inspiration in product design. So I chose to do it by hand in the later prototyping process, and during the production process I could do the test directly on the body. This helps me to quickly advance the materialization process of the product.

Conslusion Looking back at my entire learning process during the year, I discovered that I have improved my skills in all aspects including communication, problem analysis, and project direction. I personally think that there is a lot of gain in this project. At the same time, this process is not easy, especially during the early stages of the project, I have been puzzled by the direction of my project. At the mid-term exhibition, I learned more about the user's feelings and the imagination of future communication devices by having more communication with the public. So I established my project in public design and started some face-to-face surveys and questionnaire surveys. However, the most difficult task in this process is to sort out the information obtained in the survey and understand people's ideas in the dialogue. In addition to this, it is the production of questionnaires and how they can reflect the user's habits and use status. Nick proposed a book "design research" to me during this process. It helped me to communicate, how to make questionnaires, etc. In addition to this discovery, many academic research findings can be found on the web page. These surveys have played an important role in guiding the direction of my product design. Also in the process I discovered that design is an iterative process. It is necessary to consider from the perspective of macro and micro perspectives, and ultimately establish the design concept of the product. This is another important challenge for me in this process. I need to consider the future development direction of mobile products, and the continuous updating of technology, while at the same time we must solve the current problems in people's use. In the process, I constantly coordinate these aspects of information and hope to find a reasonable solution. But time management and planning are very important in the design process. In other words, the rapid decision-

making ability in this process plays a decisive role in the process of design advancement. It is more effective to make ideas than to put them in the mind. For example, experiments, models, surveys, and gains from these experiences can lead me to constantly find problems in the programs. In addition, I need to consult professionals or seek help, such as the technical aspects of the project. In the initial part of my talk, I spent a lot of time understanding the haptic technology and how to use arduino to simulate it. After communicating with ucl's sensory technology research fellows, he provided several more rapid solutions and research methods, which accelerated the progress of my project. At the beginning of the modelling process, I used software to model and print out the product 3d. I found that it could not express the design language, so I changed it to use my hand as the final model. But this decision is also risky because the ability of the manual model is limited. Finally, the final work was completed through communication with the technical staff of the school's Fashion, Arduino, Industrial studio. In general, during the design process of this project, I challenged myself and learned about technology, fashion, and products. I am also very grateful to be able to enjoy the process of making this journey, let me see the gains in the project.
