Cooking plants is a uniquely different art from cooking meat or fish – it requires not only a solid grounding in traditional cooking techniques, but also a deeper understanding of new techniques specific to plant-based cookery. Current vegan cookbooks rarely, if ever, delve into the type of sophisticated cuisine that is available in cookbooks with meat and fish dishes. Plants Taste Better addresses this twofold: by introducing the reader to seventy stunning recipes that take vegetable cooking to a new level and concomitantly sharing with them an understanding of how to cook – by highlighting specific techniques in each recipe – that will enhance their cooking prowess across the board. This engaging and gorgeously designed cookbook will teach the home cook how to use some of the best and most useful techniques – all explained in an extremely accessible way, with recipes designed for home cooking alongside ones especially adapted from the author’s award-winning kitchen. Richard Buckley is chef-proprietor of the awardwinning and Good Food Guide-listed Acorn Vegetarian Kitchen in Bath. Placing vegetables at the centre of the plate, the restaurant is frequently mentioned as amongst the UK and the world’s top vegetarian eateries. Richard was raised a vegetarian and, after graduating with a degree in English Literature, he set about studying vegetable cookery whilst working in a series of top vegetarian restaurants. This culminated in his five-year role as head chef for Demuth’s Restaurant where he developed and refined his plantcentric cooking style. He has a passion for sharing the knowledge and techniques that he has learnt and developed in order to increase the general standard of vegan cookery across the country.

This collection of recipes are natural, non-alcoholic stimulants and tranquilisers to improve awareness, aid sleep, and everything in between. The perfect book for global foragers, fermenters, and those fascinated by the healing power of herbs. Isted has cornered the fashion world’s desire to heal themselves naturally – with clients including Missoni and Jimmy Choo – and now brings his delectable potions to a wider audience. This is no rarefied guide; using common plants such as dandelions and nettles, Isted reveals the history and practical processes of fermenting, cold-brewing and blending at home, accompanied by beautiful 18th century botanical drawings. Most importantly, 60 amazingly delicious and non-alcoholic recipes teach the secrets of love elixirs, sleeping draughts or brain boosters, among many others. Michael draws on his specialist knowledge of worldwide plants to match each to a desired effect. A seasonal guide shows when and how to harvest plants to use and how they can give you different qualities throughout the year, wherever you live, while Michael touches on ancient practices of harvesting by the Sun or Moon, depending on what is needed from a potion. Whether you’re an active forager, looking for a healthier way to live more in tune with the elements, or want to try your hand at making drinks from the plants that surround you, this is the book for you. Michael Isted has a background as a drinks specialist and is also a trained phytotherapist (BSc Hons) and nutritionist. He has designed drinks and showcased products internationally, including collaborations with The Savoy, Missoni and Jimmy Choo. Combining his passion of beverages with his knowledge and understanding of plants, Michael created The Herball in 2012 to promote and celebrate the many ways in which we can integrate plants to invigorate and enrich our lives. He works closely with a number of small organic growers and producers throughout the world to produce and sell authentic, artisanal plantbased products, such as infusions, aromatic waters, spices, extracts and oils.

From architects and product designers to textile artists and digital innovators, Women in Design profiles 21 of the most influential female designers from the twentieth century to the present day, showcasing their finest work and celebrating their enduring influence.

Design throughout history has been profoundly shaped and enhanced by the creativity of women; as shapers, designers, patrons and educators. But in a narrative that tends towards the promotion of their male counterparts, their contributions are all too often overlooked. Women in Design rediscovers and revels in the work of such influential figures as Eileen Gray, Lora Lamm, Norma Merrick Sklarek and Lella Vignelli, while shining a spotlight on modern-day trailblazers such as Nathalie du Pasquier, Hella Jongerius and Neri Oxman. Illustrated throughout with archival imagery, each of the 21 entries (profiling 27 women in total) offers a rare glimpse into the working worlds of some of the most inspiring forces in contemporary design. Libby Sellers is a design historian, consultant and former senior curator of the Design Museum, London. She has produced a wealth of exhibitions, including a celebration of the life and work of Eileen Gray, the annual Designer of Year awards and the Thomas Heatherwick Conran Foundation Collection exhibition. Through her eponymous London-based gallery, Libby worked with some the industry’s most critical and progressive designers, commissioning works from them to sell through curated exhibitions. In 2015, Libby closed the gallery space to focus on writing, direct client commissions, small patrons’ circles editions and freelance curation. She is a juror on numerous design awards, is on the vetting committees of international fairs, and has authored two publications: one on the cultures of collecting design, which was launched during Design Miami/Basel 2010. In 2014 Libby was honoured by the Women of the Year awards as a Woman of Achievement in the Arts.

THE QUEEN The Life and Times of Elizabeth II Catherine Ryan Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II has reigned for 64 years, longer than any British monarch in history.

Book Sales 9780785835738 £12.99/$19.99 US/$25.99 CAN 290 x 235 mm, 192 pages, Hardcover Book Rights: World English Biography & Autobiography/Royalty

The Queen was a beacon of hope during and after the Second World War, in difficult times when the world faced a precarious future, and she has served as a role model for generations of men and women who continue to be in awe of her commitment to service, sacrifice, and the Commonwealth of nations over which she rules. When her father was crowned King George VI, Elizabeth was thrust into the eye of the storm as a future queen. It is unlikely that we will ever see a monarch reign so long or so effectively again, holding together a disparate group of nations, each with its own aspirations, customs and traditions. Catherine Ryan has written an intriguing biography of one of the most famous women of modern times, who at 91 years old still seems fit and healthy and looks very unlikely to hand over the reins to her successors any time soon.

Mudlarking, searching the Thames foreshore, has a long tradition: mudlarks used to be small boys grubbing a living from scrap. Today’s mudlarks unearth relics of the past, from Roman tiles to elegant Georgian pottery. Here are Ted Sandling’s most evocative finds, gorgeously photographed. Together they create a mosaic of everyday London life through the centuries, touching on the journeys, pleasures, vices, industries, adornments and comforts of a world city. London in Fragments celebrates the beauty of small things, and makes sense of the intangible connection that found objects give us to the individuals who lost them.

CASTLES A Visual History of Fortified Structures: Ancient, Medieval & Modern Charles Stephenson

Castles takes a uniquely architectural approach to deconstructing all forms of fortification, showing how the work of architect, stonemason and engineer evolved to repel the increasingly destructive power of an attack, from siege engine to artillery. While the medieval castle is analysed in detail, the book addresses a broad chronology of defences – from the earliest fortresses and walled cities of the ancient world through to the point in the 19th century when modern weapons forced armies underground.

WOMEN OF INVENTION Life-changing Ideas by Remarkable Women Charlotte Montague For many women in years gone by, the invention process was fraught with danger and difficulty: not only did they face the hardship and obstacles of inventing, they also had to contend with the sexism and gender discrimination of a male world that believed women had nothing to contribute. Scientific women came to the fore with momentous innovations which were impossible for men to ignore and in every walk of 21st century-life women have been challenging themselves to shape the way we live.

First published in 1814, Werner’s Nomenclature of Colours is a taxonomic guide to colour which been cherished by naturalists and anthropologists for over two centuries. In the late 1790’s Abraham Gottlob Werner devised his own standardised colour scheme, which allowed the writer to describe even the subtlest of chromatic differences with consistent terminology. His scheme was then adapted by an Edinburgh flower painter, Patrick Syme, who traced the actual minerals described by Werner, and used them to create the colour charts found in the book. In the pre-photographic age, almost all visual details had to be captured using the written word, and scientific observers could not afford any ambiguity in their descriptions. These included Charles Darwin, for whom Werner’s Nomenclature was an indispensible tool during his seminal voyage on the Beagle.

DARWIN’S FOSSILS Discoveries that Shaped the Theory of Evolution Adrian Lister Darwin’s voyage on the HMS Beagle is a classic story of discovery, and the fossils he brought home have had a tremendous impact on the history of science.

In On the Origin of Species Charles Darwin credited his discoveries of fossils, as much as those of living creatures, as the stimulus for his theory of evolution. Darwin’s Fossils is an accessible account of his pioneering work on fossils, his adventures in South America and his relations with the scientific establishment. While Darwin’s work on Galapagos finches is celebrated, his pioneering work on fossils is much less well known. He was the first to collect the remains of giant extinct South American mammals; he worked out how coral reefs and atolls formed; he excavated and explained marine fossils high in the Andes; and he discovered a fossil forest that now bears his name. All of this was fundamental in leading him to his theory of evolution. Many of Darwin’s fossils survive, at the Natural History Museum and elsewhere, and recent years have seen a surge of scientific interest and research into them.

JOURNEY Lizzy Hawker

This is the story of the ambition, the history, pain and euphoria of an incredible achievement: a journey on foot through the highest mountain range in the world, of around 1,000 miles with 100,000 metres of ascent in fewer than 42 days.

Aurum Press 9781781317440 £18.00/$25.00 US/$32.00 CAN 216 x 135 mm, 304 pages, Hardcover Book Rights: World Sports & Recreation/Running & Jogging

Lizzy Hawker has always run, and run far, and it is the mountains, and specifically the lure of the Himalayas, where she has found the greatest paths, and her greatest challenges. In 2016 Lizzy made a lifelong dream come true: a journey on foot through the highest mountain range in the world, around 1,000 miles with 100,000 metres of ascent, crossing twelve 5000-metre passes in fewer than 42 days. Telling the incredible story of the immensity of this challenge, Lizzy describes how she conquered her fears and traversed what few others have achieved in 42 days of constant running, carrying nothing but the bare essentials. From what led her to embark on this ultra-run and bringing in the history of those who have come before, Lizzy describes how the mountains were both her biggest test and her biggest resource in this compelling and quite astounding tale of human feat and endurance. Inspired by mountains and wilderness, Lizzy Hawker ‘fell’ into the world of ultra-distance and endurance running more by chance than by design. Endurance has always been a way of life for Lizzy, rather than a sport. But having the courage to take some unexpected opportunities opened doors, and her achievements snowballed both on the road and the trail. She is the world record holder for 24 Hours and was the 2006 world champion in 100 kilometres on the road. She is also the four-time winner of The North Face Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc, and in 2011 she set a new record running from Everest Base Camp to Kathmandu.

ART January 2018

THE ORANGE BALLOON DOG Bubbles, Disruptions and Avarice in the Contemporary Art Market Don Thompson A fresh and provocative look at the high-end art market using behavioural economics to better understand the competition, gambles, status and greed that fuels the value of modern art.

Aurum Press 9781781317235 £14.99 216 x 135 mm, 240 pages, Hardcover Book Colour plates Rights: UK & ANZ Art/Business Aspects

A follow-up from Don Thompson, author of The $12 Million Stuffed Shark, on the contemporary art market and human nature. Don is a world expert on what motivates collectors, dealers, galleries and museums to make the deals they make and to pay the prices they pay. Prices at the high end of the market are driven by the intrinsic virtues of the art, but also by demand from the ultra-rich, by national wealth funds, by agents, by non-taxed transactions, and by high status art fairs. The idea that the most interesting thing about contemporary art is its financial value is now accepted by many in the art world. The high end is the aspect that gets all the media attention and is where psychological factors – competition, power, betting, status, greed – come most obviously into play. The field of behavioural economics offers some insights and a way of explanation for the phenomena that is behind the value of art. The nuanced and exclusive world of dealers, agents and auction houses, is explored and included throughout the book, examples of which reflect the irrationalities in human behaviour and decision making. Including efforts to nudge the way individuals behave when purchasing art, the book offers insights and artworld tales from those who are making these deals, from New York and London, Luxembourg and Beijing. Don Thompson is an economist and professor of business who has taught at the LSE and Harvard Business School. He lives in Toronto.
