A message from The President

Dear ‘Old Londoner’, It is a great honour and privilege to have been elected as your President this year, stepping into the shoes of Professor Paul Wright who held this post last year during the Centenary celebrations of 2011. I qualified in December 1989 and when I look back over the years I see how much change there has been in our professional lives, as well as in the clinical care we provide and the environment in which we work. I have been very lucky to have been at the heart of those changes through my association with the BDA, the FGDP from its humble origins, with Dental Protection, www.qmul.ac.uk/alumni/batlaa

and vocational training at the London Deanery. Throughout my time since qualifying I have kept in touch with The London by giving talks to final year students on vocational training, law and ethics, as well as by attending alumni meetings whenever possible. It is always a tremendous joy to catch up with friends at the Annual Clinical Meeting and I hope that my own year of 1989/90 will make a special effort to renew old friendships in March 2013, nearly a quarter of a century after we left these hallowed clinics. The skyline around the Hospital has changed incredibly and I would hope that Old Londoners take the chance to come and see the shiny glass world of the new Hospital, the Students’ Association and the dental clinics. The theme for this year’s Annual Clinical Meeting is “Tomorrow’s World”, in some sense a reflection of where we have come from and also how many challenges we continue to face. The programme is set out in more detail on page 5 but I would like to highlight some of the presentations for you. Dr Kate Hefferon is Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer on the MSc course in Applied Positive Psychology at the University of East London and has written a best selling book on positive psychology, published by the Open University Press. She will discuss what makes us happy and will look critically at the question,

“Is there a formula for happy dentists?” At a time when we are starting to see reduced employment opportunities for dentists graduating from our dental schools, Dr Paul Batchelor will take a look at some of the drivers for this new phenomenon and whether team working will now mean less dentists and more DCPs. I am also pleased that Dr Raj Rattan MBE, Senior Dento-Legal Consultant at Dental Protection, is able to deliver a presentation, along with other colleagues and friends. The Old Londoners’ event is about meeting up and reminiscing and, in addition to the opportunities to do just that over the course of the two days, there will be a drinks reception and dinner on the Friday evening and a lunch on the Saturday. For those Old Londoners who have not returned for many years, I hope you will come and see what you have been missing and make it an annual feature of continuing your professional development in “tomorrow’s world”! With best wishes

A glimpse of the new Dental Institute The Dental Institute will be relocating in Spring 2014 to a new facility in the Alexandra Wing. This next exciting episode in the transformation of the Royal London is greeted with enthusiasm and support by staff and students. Alison Cann, Senior Clinical Advisor, and Mark Viner, Senior Commissioning Co-ordinator, for the project offer a preview. Modern clinical standards will be reflected in the interior of the new Dental Institute; the 111 operatories are larger and easier to move about and work in, with crafted worktops and flooring to assist in reducing the risk of cross infection. Dental chairs are provided in suites of open plan and single rooms. The facilities will include: •Teaching operatories •Consulting suites •Paediatric Dentistry •Restorative Dentistry •Dental Imaging •Modern Production labs •Maxillo-Facial suite

Mock-up of the new operatories – spacious, light and modern with a hint of School blue! © Skanska and David Hawkins Architectural Partnership

There will also be extensive new teaching facilities – co-located on the top two floors and providing an ideal academic environment for learning, teaching and research. These facilities will include: •Seminar rooms •Library •Study rooms •Spacious offices •Teaching labs All will be supported by integrated audio visual equipment. The Dental Imaging department will be expanded in the new build and will be entirely digital with the introduction of the new PACS system, making instant diagnostics and the retrieval of images easier. The feel of the new building will be light and airy, yet welcoming. Truly the ‘crown’ in the new development!

Supporting current students The Malcolm Jenkins and John Richards Travelling Scholarships are presented annually to up to two dental students from the School. The 2011-12 recipients, Dr Jonathan Hatton and Dr Sarah Zakaria, presented their papers to alumni at the 2012 ACM. A comparative study of the knowledge of dental students and dentists in the treatment of Dentine Hypersensitivity Dr Jonathan Hatton (q BDS, Barts and The London, 2012), recipient of the Malcolm Jenkins Travelling Scholarship in 2011, writes: ‘I undertook a comparative study of the knowledge and treatment of Dentine Hypersensitivity (DH) among dentists and dental students at The London and the Bauru School of Dentistry in Sao Paulo, Brazil. With DH affecting up to two-thirds of patients, it is a condition which poses issues for clinicians because of the range of different treatment types, each with varying efficacies. With this in mind, a questionnaire was devised to compare both dental students and qualified staff in their knowledge and treatment of DH and this was distributed to 150 recipients at both The London and the Bauru School of Dentistry. Preliminary London data confirmed our initial thoughts and demonstrated a good understanding of DH by both parties yet undergraduates reported low confidence levels with regards to treating the condition. Data from Brazilian colleagues is still being collected but initial findings show an area of undergraduate teaching weakness. These preliminary results have since been presented at the annual IADR conference in June 2012, for which I travelled back to Brazil. My elective also gave me the opportunity to fulfil a lifelong dream of visiting the Amazon Rainforest where I swam in the Amazon River. The Malcolm Jenkins Travelling Scholarship has opened many doors for me and I am extremely grateful to the alumni for their continued support.’ 6   The London Hospital Dental Club

A report on the behavioural methods of reducing dental anxiety in children at the University of Malaya Dr Sarah Zakaria (q BDS, Barts and The London, 2012), recipient of the John Richards Travelling Scholarship in 2011, writes: ‘I was keen to look at the behavioural methods of reducing dental anxiety in children. I chose Malaysia because I felt it would be interesting to compare the differences in methods used to reduce anxiety there, with those practiced in the UK. Although dental caries prevalence has declined, there are still high levels of caries among children, especially in developing countries. Dental anxiety can lead to avoidance of dental treatment, increasing incidents of dental caries, leading to unpleasant dental visits and therefore causing more fear and anxiety, resulting in a vicious cycle. I observed postgraduate dental students at the University of Malaya treating children and noted the anxiety and behaviours using a simple Venham Rating Scale. My supervisor kindly organised a discussion session with several other dental clinicians regarding behavioural methods they often use and their experiences in handling child

patients. This session was extremely valuable as it is not every day that a dental student is given the opportunity to hold discussions with a room full of experienced clinicians. My project concluded that although there were some differences in the behavioural methods used in Malaysia compared to the UK, due to language and culture, they were essentially similar and just as effective in terms of reducing dental anxiety in children. Apart from working on my elective project, I had a wonderful two weeks in Malaysia. I toured the large and historic University of Malaya campus and also had a chance to see their dental library, which was small but adequate. I also tried various tasty foods and colourful drinks - a must-try for anyone visiting Malaysia! I would like to thank the members of the London Hospital Dental Club for their generosity and for enabling me to have such an unforgettable experience. Thank you very much!’

Electives are supported by donations to both the London Hospital Dental Club Benevolent Fund and the Queen Mary, University of London Foundation. Observations on the use of fluoride among children in Córdoba, Argentina Dimple Goswami (Fifth year dental student) writes:

‘Electives give you the chance to experience dentistry outside the confines of the Dental School Many, myself included, grabbed this opportunity with both hands, and sought to find a location that would challenge our perspective of how dentistry is practiced. This lead to me

Katrinia Stead is the 2011-12 recipient of the Malcolm Jenkins Travelling Scholarship while Damaris Santander Soria is recipient of the John Richards Travelling Scholarship. Both will make a presentation at the forthcoming ACM in March.

going to Córdoba, Argentina for two weeks to investigate the use and policies of fluoride preventing tooth decay among children aged 16 and under at the Facultad de Odontologia, at the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba. Argentina, unlike the UK, does not have free dental healthcare for children under the age of 16 and children in more remote areas do not have readily available dental care. The Universidad Nacional de Córdoba allows children who are most at risk to be treated by students, free of charge. The use of fluoride in Córdoba, despite constraints of cost and equipment, is less structured enabling methods to be adapted to patient needs. A notable amount of time was spent during the “motivational pre-treatment period” to inform both parents and patients of the benefits and use of fluoride and this was again reiterated during every subsequent follow-up appointment. It was a great learning experience to see the contrast in paediatric dentistry and to meet dental students and clinicians from other countries. It also reaffirmed the classic saying that “prevention is always better than cure,” especially when it comes to caries. I would like to thank the supporters of the London Hospital Dental Club Benevolent Fund for their generous gifts in helping me to fund my elective.’

Dental Centenary Fund During this year’s Annual Fund Telephone Campaign, a team of three dental students spoke with over 250 dental alumni about the Dental Centenary Fund. Abbie Edwards is in her second year of the GEP programme and is a second time caller. She was joined by Elise Morgan and Rebecca Iles, both third year students. In addition, Rebecca is the current President of the Dental Society. We are very truly delighted that so many of you have decided to make a gift to the Dental Centenary Fund. Your gifts will not only help us to provide scholarships to enable the best young people and researchers to come and study dentistry at Barts and The London but also help us to enhance the extracurricular experience of our students by providing elective and travel bursaries. If you would like to make a gift, please telephone the Alumni Relations and Fundraising Office on +44 (0)20 7882 7790 or visit our website at www.qmul.ac.uk/alumni/ supportingqm to download a gift form.

If you wish to support the Malcolm Jenkins and John Richards Travelling Scholarship endowment fund, please make your gift using the ACM registration form. You may Gift Aid your donation to increase its value to the fund by 25 per cent. L-R: Abbie, Rebecca and Elise

Institute success And another Gold Medal! Dr Alice Middleton (q BDS, Barts and The London, 2012) became the third consecutive dental student from Barts and The London to win the prestigious University of London Gold Medal for Dentistry. Both Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and King’s College London Dental Institute are invited to nominate the top four per cent of final year students for the Gold Medal exam, which is a 30-minute oral examination conducted by four external examiners. Professor Farida Fortune, Dean for Dentistry, said: “I would like to congratulate

Alice on this outstanding achievement, and I would also like to congratulate all staff within the Dental School for their continuous support for our students. The fact that the School has won the award for the third year running is an achievement for us all to be proud of.” Alice said: “I’m really pleased that BL will keep the medal for the third year running, and am thankful to everyone who supported me and the other candidates leading up to the exam. I couldn’t have done it without all the fantastic tutors here.” The other Barts and The London students who were also put forward for the award, were: Dr Kunal Patel, Dr Jennifer Fuller, Dr Cassie Lewis and Dr Razia Merali, all of whom qualified in 2012. Previously, the Gold Medal had been won by Dr Reena Wadia in 2011 and Dr Nike Goodluck in 2010.

The Making of Queen Mary, University of London A newly published history of the College, The Making of Queen Mary, University of London, covers the major events of the last 25 years. In particular, it charts the merger of Queen Mary College with Westfield College and more recently, the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry. With a chapter devoted to the history of the Dental School since its foundation in 1911 and with a significant contribution by Professor Paul Wright (q BDS, The London, 1969), the new book provides a brief illustrated snapshot of the first 100 years of the School. The Making of Queen Mary, University of London is available for alumni to purchase for £15 excluding p&p. To order your copy, you can telephone the Alumni Relations and Fundraising Office on +44 (0)20 7882 7790 or visit www.qmul.ac.uk/alumni
